Operation tips • Do not touch the sensor [2] and keep the sensor away from possible interfering sources e.g. a fan, heating element, body … Also, do not expose the sensor to direct (sun)light as this will lead to false readings. • Consider mounting the device on a tripod (not incl.) for longer and more stable measurements. • Make sure the device is at ambient temperature for accurate measurements. • Remove the batteries when the device is not used for a long time. 21.01.2010 6 ©Velleman nv DVM809 90 7. Rev. 01 0 Bac ckground infformation Working principle he unit detects en nergy that is emitted, reflected The Infra Red sensor of th and transmitted by a surfa ace. This energy is focussed onto a detector that converts this t information into i a temperature reading. The laser l beam is onlly used for aiming a purposes. Emissivitty Emissivity y describes the energy-emitting characteristics c of materials. Most organic orr oxidized surface es have an emiss sivity of ±0.95. Measuring g shiny or polishe ed surfaces will be b inaccurate. Us se some masking tape or pa aint to compensa ate, allow sufficie ent time for the ta ape or paint to reach the surface tempera ature. When measuring targets with w ε < 0.95, the e display temperrature is lower than the actual a temperatu ure of the surface e. Surface temperature t When going from low temperature to high temperature me easurements or vice versa a, the IR sensor of o the thermome eter needs a few minutes to adjus st. Distance e and spot size The distan nce-to-spot ratio of this thermom meter is 2:1. This means that the spot size (measured area)) is approximately half the distanc ce between the nd the target, e.g g. when the mete er is held at 10 cm m (±4”) from the e sensor an target, the Ø of the measu ured area (spot size) s will be ±5cm m (±2”). The target mu ust be larger than n the spot size to o ensure correct measurement. m This mean ns that for smalle er targets, the th hermometer mustt be held closer to t the targett. For best accura acy, make sure the target is at le east twice as large as the spo ot size. 8. Maiintenance • Wipe th he device regularrly with a moist, lint-free cloth. Do D not use alcoho ol or solvents. DO NOT su ubmerge the dev vice in any liquid.. 9. • To repllace the batteries s, make sure the device is switched off. • Open the battery coverr at the back by sliding s it downwa ards (away from nsor). the sen • Take out the old batteries and replace them with 3 new and identical 1.5 5V AAA ba atteries following the polarity marrkings inside the battery compartment. • Slide th he battery cover back in place. Do not punc cture or throw batteries b in fire e. Dispose of batteries in accordance witth local regulattions. Do not attempt to recharge r non-re echargeable ba atteries. Keep batteries away from children. 21.01.2010 7 ©Velleman nv DVM8090 Rev. 01 10.
