READ AND FOLLOW ALL SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS Follow all important notices on the appliance before using the pump. Failure to do so may result in loss of fish life and/or damage to this appliance. 2. A. B. C. 3. 4. DANGER – To avoid possible electric shock, special care should be taken since water is employed in the use of pond equipment. If pump is damaged in any way, do not attempt repairs yourself; return the appliance to the store where it was purchased if still under warranty. A 10mA or 30mA Residual Current Device (RCD) (or GFCI- Ground Fault Current Interrupter) MUST be fitted to the mains (main power supply) of the pump only. If the appliance shows any sign of abnormal water leakage or if RCD (or GFCI- Ground Fault Current Interrupter) switches off, disconnect the power supply cord from mains (main power supply) and remove pump from water. Carefully examine the appliance after installation. It should not be plugged if there is water on parts not intended to be wet. Do not operate any appliance if it has a damaged cord or plug, or if it is malfunctioning or if it is dropped or damaged in any manner. The power cord of this appliance cannot be replaced; if the cord is damaged, the appliance should be discarded. Never cut the cord. This appliance is not intended for use by persons (including children) with reduced physical, sensory or mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge, unless they have been given supervision or instruction concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible for their safety. The pump is equipped with a thermal overload safety device. In the event of any overheating of the motor, this device automatically switches off the pump. The cooling time is roughly 15 to 20 minutes, and then the pump automatically comes on again. If the overload cutout is tripped, it is essential to identify and deal with the cause of the overheating. 5. To avoid injury, do not touch moving parts or hot parts. 6. CAUTION – Always unplug or disconnect all appliances in the pond from the electrical supply before placing hands in water, before putting on or taking off parts and while the equipment is being installed, maintained or handled. When inserting or removing the pump from the water, always pull out the main electrical plug. Never yank the cord to pull the plug from outlet. Grasp the plug and pull to disconnect. Always unplug an appliance from an outlet when not in use. Never lift the pump by the cord or floating switch. Use the unit handle. 7. CAUTION – This is a Pond Pump. The pumps are designed to pump clean water or water containing solids with a diameter of up ¼, depending on model. This Pump Has Been Evaluated For Use With Freshwater Only. Do not use this pump for other than its intended use (i.e.: do not use in swimming pools, bathrooms, etc.). The use of attachments not recommended or sold by the appliance manufacturer may cause an unsafe condition. 2 ENGLISH • Do not use this pump in swimming pools or other situations where people are immersed. • This pump is suitable for use in water temperatures up to 95° F / 35° C. • Do not use this pump with inflammable, corrosive, explosive (e.g. petrol, fuel, diluents) or drinkable l liquids, greases, oils or foodstuffs. 8. Do not install or store the appliance where it will be exposed to the weather or to temperatures below freezing. Remove and store the pump in a sheltered place. Shelter pump away from direct sunlight. The materials have high stability to sunlight but direct rays may overheat the motor and speed up insulator aging. 9. IMPORTANT - Make sure that the pump is securely installed before operating it. Do not allow the pump to run dry. The pump must be immersed in water completely. This pump must never operate outside of water. Before starting the pump make sure that: • The voltage and frequency specified on the pump’s nameplate coincide with those of the available power supply; these pumps are designed for 115 Volt – 60 Hz operation. • There are no signs of damage to the pump or its power cord; • The electric connection is made in a dry place, protected against any risk of flooding; • Conformity with local and State electric codes is mandatory. The National Electric Code requires that a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) be used in the branch circuit supplying sump, utility, effluent and all fountain pumps, pool pumps and other pond equipment. Consult a licensed electrician or your power company if in doubt. • The float must be able to move freely while the pump is in operation. • It is absolutely essential to prevent any risk of the pump freezing. In the event of freezing temperatures, remove the pump from the liquid, empty it and keep it in a place where it cannot freeze. • Periodically, it is advisable to make sure that no dirt (leaves, sand, etc.) has accumulated in the collection trap or around the suction grid. 10. If an extension cord is necessary, ensure connection is watertight and dust proof. A cord with proper rating should be used. A cord rated for less amperes or watts than the appliance rating may overheat. Any exten sion cords must comply with requirements of the DIN VDE Standard 0620. Care should be taken to arrange the cord so that it will not be tripped over or pulled. The connection should be carried out by a qualified electrical installer. Automatic operation: The floating switch starts and stops the pump automatically. The water level that prompts the starting and stopping of the pump can be adjusted by changing the length of cable between the holder and the float. The length of cable for the float must never be shorter than ½”. Manual operation: a) The floating switch must be lifted in order to start pumps with a float. b) For pumps without a float, insert the plug. 11. IMPORTANT – Supply electrical power through a Residual Current Device (RCD or Ground Fault Current Interrupter) with rated residual current not exceeding 30 mA. 12. WARNING – RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK – This pump is supplied with a grounding-type or attachment plug. To reduce the risk of electric shock: • The electric connection should be made in a dry place, protected against any risk of flooding; • Be certain that it is connected only to a properly grounded, grounding-type receptacle 3 SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS FOR FUTURE REFERENCE Only the faithful observation of these installation, electrical and maintenance guidelines will ensure the safe and efficient use of this pump. PUMP INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS General Information Properly installed, Laguna Pumps provide powerful and uninterrupted water circulation and require minimal maintenance. The pumps feature a magnetic-driven motor that delivers an astounding amount of water flow while consuming relatively low energy. You get reliable water circulation at low energy efficient costs. The motor unit and electrical connections are hermetically sealed with inert epoxy to ensure safe and lasting operation under extreme water conditions. The pumps are completely submersible and designed to run continuously in fresh water. The Laguna submersible pond and water feature pumps can be installed directly in ponds to drive water features and waterfalls as well as directly in a skimmer filtration systems. Choosing the Right Pump Choosing the right pump depends on many factors, such as how much water is in the pond and how much work you are asking it to do. Will it circulate water only or will it pump water to a Laguna Filter Falls, UV sterilizer, waterfall, and/or ornament? Answering these questions will determine the size of your pump. The more features you add, the more work you are asking your pump to do, and therefore, the more powerful it has to be. It’s a good idea to choose one with a capacity slightly greater than your initial needs, especially since you may want to add to your system later. Installing the pump inside a Skimmer Filter (see Fig. 3) WARNING: Always unplug or disconnect all appliances in the pond from the electrical supply before installing, repairing, maintaining or handling the equipment in the water. IMPORTANT: To achieve the best pump operation, always use the largest bore hole possible. Avoid sharp bends in the hosing. Gradual curves are preferred. Picture Figure 3 Place the pump inside the chamber at the back of the Skimmer Filter, in either the vertical or horizontal position. Run the electrical cord through appropriate channels or bore holes at the back of the skimmer filter. Run tubing (not included) inside the chamber through the opening of the skimmer filter, attach the appropriate coupling (not included) to the tubing and connect it to the output of the pump. Use a hose clamp to secure the connection. Run the other end of the tubing to the appropriate pond equipment. TIP: Ensure that the length of tubing that you will connect to the pump output is long enough to perform the desired task, whether to circulate water to a connecting Filter Falls unit, or back into the pond, or to another piece of pond equipment. Note: Use Laguna Silicone Lubricant to make hosing connections easier and hose clamps to secure all hose output connections. 4 ENGLISH Pump Maintenance WARNING: Always unplug or disconnect all appliances in the pond from the electrical supply before installing, repairing, maintaining or handling the equipment in the water. DO NOT USE DETERGENTS OR OTHER CHEMICAL CLEANERS which could damage the pump and pollute the pond. Laguna MaxDrive Submersible pumps are sealed magnetic driven water pumps and should only be repaired or serviced by a manufacturers authorized representative. Opening motor compartment or attempting to repair motor or power cord will void warranty. TROUBLESHOOTING THE PUMP DOES NOT START OR MAKE NOISE Check if power is supplied to the socket and the plug is correctly inserted into power source. Ensure Pump Float can move freely. LOW FLOW FROM PUMP • Check that strainer is clean. • Check tubing for blockages. • Check that the pump is free of dirt and debris. NO FLOW FROM PUMP • Check that the power supply is on. • Check that the plug is correctly connected to the electrical receptacle/socket. • Check tubing for blockages. PUMP STOPS WORKING (Possible Intervention of Thermal Overload Switch) Check that fluids being pumped are not too dense causing pump to overheat. Ensure water temperature does not exceed 95° F / 35° C. Check strainer and impellor for obstructions. CLEANING INTAKE STRAINER / IMPELLER 1. Unplug from electrical source. 2. Remove pump from filter or pond. 3. Remove impeller cover. 4. Using a flat head screw driver remove the outer impeller cover. 5. Remove any obstructions or debris that may be interfering with impeller. 6. Replace impeller cover. THERMALLY PROTECTED PUMP To prevent the motor from overheating if the pump accidentally “runs dry” or if the rotor becomes blocked, the thermal protector will shut the pump off. To re-set the thermal protector, remove the power source, allow pump to cool, inspect pump and usage conditions, and then re-establish power. WINTERIZING THE PUMP 1. Unplug and remove the pump from the pond. 2. Gently scrub off any dirt and debris with a soft nylon brush. 3. Thoroughly clean the pump as per instructions in this manual. 4. Lubricate all seals with Laguna Silicone Lube (sold separately/PT-595). 5. Store indoors for best results. Do not store the pump in below-freezing temperatures. 6. When re-opening your pond or water feature in the spring, submerge the pump in the pond for 1 hour prior to starting the pump. 5 FRANÇAIS . MESURES DE SÉCURITÉ IMPORTANTES 2. A. B. C. 3. 4.
