GENERAL TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
Mares pneumatic spearguns are manufactured in many versions
to meet every need.
After you select your Mares pneumatic speargun, personalize it
however you like with the many accessories offered in the Mares
Pure Instinct line.
! WARNING
Never load the speargun if the line releaser is not in the
correct position (Fig. 6). If necessary, manually position the line
releaser in the correct position before loading the speargun.
Failure to follow this rule could fire the speargun accidentally.
Ignoring this warning may result in harm to people or things.
! WARNING
Use only original Mares components, spare parts, and
accessories. Mares declines any responsibility for any
damage to people or things caused by malfunctions due to
the use of non-original Mares components, spare parts, and
accessories.
! WARNING
Before firing, check that the shaft is inserted, and if the
shaft should disengage from the piston accidentally, do
not fire as this could damage the shock absorber bushing.
Reinsert the shaft until it catches before shooting. If the
shaft comes out of the speargun without the tailpiece,
discharge all the air from the speargun before pressing the
trigger to release the tailpiece still connected to the piston.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
ASSEMBLING THE LINE (Fig. 2)
• Fasten one end of the line or monoline to the line slider on the
shaft (Fig. 2B,2C).
• Push the shaft into the muzzle until it rests against the piston.
• Wind the line at least twice between the line hole and the
wishbone (Fig. 2).
• Fasten the line or monoline to the cone (Fig. 7).
• If you want to maintain the right tension at all times, use the
damper sling or purchase one of the bungees available in the
Mares Pure Instinct line of accessories.
! WARNING
Never load or fire when out of the water. Never fire in
situations in which you cannot see or when visibility is
poor, and never in the direction of other people or objects.
Otherwise you risk injuring yourself or other people, causing
serious harm. Keep in mind that the speargun must be used
exclusively for spearfishing, and that in accordance with Art.
131 of Italian Presidential Decree 1369/1968, the weapon
must not be kept in the armed position when not diving.
SAFETY CATCH (Fig. 3)
Mares pneumatic spearguns use different safety systems.
Consult figure 3 to see which system your Mares pneumatic
spearguns uses.

OPERATING PRINCIPLE OF PNEUMATIC SPEARGUNS (Fig. 1)
The air contained in the tank (D) is pre-compressed through valve
(G) by means of a pump. When the piston (C) is pushed into the
barrel (E) with the shaft, the pressure in the tank (D) increases
until the piston engages the catch hook (F).
Pulling the trigger releases the piston, which is propelled along
the barrel by the sudden expansion of compressed air until it
stops on the shock absorber bushing (B), thereby releasing the
shaft (A) which is retained only by friction. This type of speargun
offers the advantage of very high power in a compact size.
PRECAUTIONS
Before loading the speargun, always check the following items:
• Check that the components and accessories of your pneumatic
spearguns are intact and functioning properly.
• Make sure the line releaser is in the correct position (Fig. 6).
• Check the correct operation of the firing system, including the
safety catch.
• Make sure that the line or monofilament is whole and that
it is firmly fastened to the end of the weapon and to the cord
guide (Fig. 2).
• Check that the tailpiece of the shaft is screwed on firmly. If not,
tighten it mechanically using a liquid thread lock.
• Check that there is no sand in the holes of the muzzle before
inserting the shaft; sand could ruin the internal components.
• After use and before putting the speargun away, always fit the
flap protector on the spearshaft.
• In the event of a malfunction, do not attempt to repair the
speargun yourself, but immediately consult an AUTHORIZED
MARES LAB SERVICE CENTER or send it directly to MARES.

Under art. 18 of Italian Law no. 963/65, the use of spearguns
is permitted only to persons age 16 or older (applies to Italy
only). Please refer to current legislation concerning the use
of spearguns by minors in other countries.

market. Your Mares pneumatic speargun is the end result of years
of continuing evolution and development in new materials and
technologies that improve performance, reliability, and safety. It
is the ultimate expression of Mares’ extensive experience in the
spearfishing sector.

TRIGGER SENSITIVITY ADJUSTMENT

POWER REGULATOR
The power regulator allows the speargun to be used at either a
reduced pressure or full pressure setting (Fig. 5), to meet a wide
variety of spearfishing needs.
! WARNING
Read this instruction manual carefully before use, because
your safety and the long life of your equipment may depend
on it. Pay special attention to all parts concerning safety.
Save the manual for consultation in the future. Diving
equipment should only be used by persons who have
received adequate training.

PNEUMATIC SPEARGUN
LOADING THE SPEARGUN IN THE WATER
• Make sure the line releaser is in the correct position (Fig. 6)
• Engage the safety catch (Fig. 3).
• Rest the speargun handle on your thigh or instep (Fig. 9),
depending on its length.
• Insert the rear part of the shaft into the muzzle making sure the
washer is also correctly in place.
• Screw on the monofilament or line between the cone and the
line releaser as shown in Fig. 2.
• Insert the loader provided on the spear head (Fig. 4), and with your
free hand grasp the muzzle and shaft at the same time (Fig. 9).
• Press firmly, trying to keep the shaft aligned with the speargun.
Push until the shaft is securely engaged.
The loading operation is facilitated by putting the pressure
regulator on the “low” setting (Fig. 5).
! WARNING
When depressurizing the speargun, always set the power
regulator to the maximum pressure position (Fig. 5).
! WARNING
NEVER exceed the maximum pressure
of 30 BAR / 3000 kPa / 435 PSI.
Higher pressure could damage the speargun or cause accidents.
! WARNING
The values shown in the table 1 apply to a fully discharged
weapon. By way of example, a MEDI STEN 70 model speargun charged to 20 BAR taken to 30 BAR requires only 240
strokes, not 560.
Ignoring this warning may result in harm to people or things.
! WARNING
Be sure that the piston is engaged to the trigger mechanism
before releasing the shaft.
! WARNING
In every instance Mares declines all responsibility for any
harm to persons or things caused by malfunctions due
to improper or insufficient product maintenance. Mares
also declines all responsibility for harm to people or
things caused by improper use or products that have been
tampered with.
! WARNING
NEVER leave weapons loaded when they are not being used
for spearfishing, whether you are in or out of the water.
Changes in temperature or accidental bumps could lead to
serious harm to people or objects.
UNLOADING THE SPEARGUN
Always unload the speargun while you are still in the water.
In the event of transport by air, compressed air spearguns must
be discharged of the internal pressure to MAX 10 BAR / 1000 kPa
/ 145 PSI.
! WARNING
Fire the weapon to discharge it before getting out of the water,
taking care to follow the instructions provided in this manual.
Before firing make sure that there are no other people
around within range of the speargun.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
We recommend that you rinse the speargun thoroughly with
fresh water after every use.
Do not keep the speargun in a sealed case or container; it should
be stored in a well-aired place.
Never store the speargun near sources of heat and keep it out
of the sun.
We recommend that you have your speargun serviced every year.
TO ENSURE MAXIMUM SAFETY, YOUR EQUIPMENT MUST
ONLY BE SERVICED, OVERHAULED, OR REPAIRED BY AN
AUTHORIZED MARES LAB SERVICE CENTER.
! WARNING
Never point the speargun at other people, even when the
safety is on.
TANK PRESSURE
Spearguns leave our company already loaded to the operating
pressure shown in TABLE 2, Characteristics. The operating
pressure can be changed using the special manual injector to
be connected to valve G (Fig. 1). To do this, unscrew the valve cap
using the loader (Fig. 4) and then connect the injector, locking it
down fully without using excessive force. TABLE 1 indicates how
many strokes are required to obtain the desired pressure.
When increasing the pressure, pause every 50 pumps to allow
the injector to cool before continuing.
Mares reserves the right to change the images and product
characteristics in this manual without notice.
! WARNING
Do not stress the weapon laterally when changing the
BARrel pressure with the manual injector (Fig. 11).
When you want to change or reset the speargun’s operating
pressure, you must pressurize it using the manual injector with
the power regulator set to the maximum power position (Fig. 5).
To decrease the pressure, simply press gently on the G valve with a
1.5mm diameter pin (Fig. 1). Let the air out very slowly to avoid any
loss of oil. If you need to fully discharge the weapon, you must hold
it for a certain period with the barrel pointing downward.
