The K-50 Operating Manual’s explanation of exposure modes is rather brief and the role of the Green Button is not clearly stated. The following is hopefully a little better. It describes the behaviour with default button and e-dial settings:

Program Mode P : Shutter speed and aperture are automatically set to give the correct exposure. The sensitivity is also controlled if ISO is automatic.

The front and rear e-dials can be used to manually select shutter speed or aperture, and this changes the mode to aperture (Av-hyper) or shutter priority (Tv-hyper) as appropriate.

Pressing the Green Button puts the camera back to Program Mode ( P).

Shutter Priority Mode Tv

: The shutter speed is selected using the front e-dial, and the aperture is is automatically set for a correct exposure.

When ISO is set to automatic, the sensitivity might also be modified to ensure a correct exposure. Normally the camera tries to use the minimum sensitivity.

Aperture Priority Mode Av

: The aperture is selected using the rear e-dial, and the shutter speed is is automatically set for a correct exposure.

When ISO is set to automatic, the sensitivity might also be modified to ensure a correct exposure. Normally the camera tries to use the minimum sensitivity possible.

Sensitivity Priority Mode Sv

: The sensitivity is selected using the rear edial. The shutter speed and aperture are then automatically set for the correct exposure.

Shutter & Aperture Priority Mode TAv

: The shutter speed and aperture are selected using the front and rear e-dials. The sensitivity is automatically set for the correct exposure.

Pressing the Green Button automatically resets the shutter, aperture and sensitivity for the correct exposure. (P LINE)

Manual Mode M

: Shutter speed, aperture and sensitivity are all manually set.

The correct exposure must be ascertained by the user with an indicator in the viewfinder or on the rear display.

Pressing the Green Button automatically resets the shutter and aperture for the correct exposure. (P LINE)

Setting ISO to automatic changes the mode to shutter and aperture priority

(TAv).

EV Compensation can be used in all of the above modes by pressing the button. The exposure is changed using the rear e-dial, and it can be reset by pressing the Green Button in compensation mode.

2 Program Lines

In general, program line (P Line) refers to the function that relates shutter speed, aperture and ISO number to the correct exposure. The camera uses program lines to determine its settings in Program Mode and presumably in its other automatic exposure modes. The K-50 does not allow the explicit selection of alternative program lines (the Pentax K-5 does).

The K-50 manual’s section on customising the button and e-dial functions mentions

P LINE

P SHIFT and

, but does not explain their meaning. Specifically, for the K-50 the above terms mean:

P LINE

Go to Program Mode . . .

Returns to P mode from Tv-hyper and Av-hyper modes.

Change settings to normal program mode values . . .

Return from shift (P-shift or Sv-shift) to normal mode P or Sv ). Reset to program mode values in M and TAv modes.

P SHIFT

Shift settings . . .

Changes both shutter and aperture setting maintaining the same exposure. It can be used in P and Sv modes.

3 Legacy Lenses

The Pentax K-50 1

can be used with old K mount lenses that do not support autofocus or auto-aperture. The K-50 body’s shake reduction feature can also be used with these lenses. There are four issues:

• No focal length data affects shake reduction for K and K

• No auto focus affects K and K

A mount lenses.

• No auto aperture affects exposure with K mount lenses.

mount lenses.

There are no exposure problems with K

A lenses, and all exposure modes can be used as long as the lens’s aperture ring is set to its ‘A’ position.

3.1 No Focal Length Data

The camera needs to know its lens’s focal length for shake reduction. Modern

AF2 mount lenses provide this information, but it has to be manually input for

K and K

A lenses. The procedure is as follows:

1. Switch off the camera, attach the lens and switch the camera back on.

2. The Input Focal Length screen will appear (Manual p264),

(a) Use the rear e-dial to select a focal length which is closest to the focal length of the lens you are using. If it is a zoom lens that is going to be used throughout its range, choose a focal length close to the midpoint of the zoom range.

(b) Press the OK button.

If the Input Focal length screen does not appear then

→ C 3

↓ Input Focal Length

OK then input the focal length as described above

OK and repeated MENU to exit

This process will have to be repeated each time the camera is switched off and on.

3.2 No Autofocus

Lenses with without autofocus have to be manually focused, but the camera can help:

1. The camera goes into manual focus mode with a single focus spot when it is switched on with a non-autofocus lens fitted. The Focus Mode Switch does not have to be used.

The K-50 has a ‘crippled’ K

AF2 mount. That is K

AF2 mount without the mechanical coupler that indicates how far the lens is stopped down. In addition, the K-50 mount does not support power zoom.

2. To focus the lens, put the required focus point inside AF area, and half depress the shutter release. Manually turn the lens’s focus ring until the focus indicator appears in the viewfinder, and there is a bleep (Manual p111).

Alternatively, press the Live View button, and use the rear screen to obtain a sharp image (Manual p112).

3.3 Exposure with K Mount Lenses

None of the normal exposure modes work with K mount lenses because the camera cannot control or sense the lens’s aperture. However, stop down metering can be used with K mount lenses in Manual mode by customising the Green

Button.

One this is done, pressing the Green Button stops the lens down to the aperture selected on its aperture ring, takes a meter reading through the lens and the sets the camera’s shutter speed. In effect, this should be the same as aperture priority mode, but stop down metering metering is not accurate on the

K-50. There is no useful pattern, but in general, it seems that smaller apertures are under exposed. This behaviour is not formally documented, but is known

about by lots of Pentax camera users.

As far as can be ascertained, the problem is intrinsic to the design of DSLRs, and could only be resolved if the K-50 mount was not crippled and could sense the aperture of K mount lenses.

3.3.1

Trial and Error Stop Down Metering

The solution to poor metering is to use the Green Button to obtain an approximate exposure, and then apply a correction using the button. The correct exposure can only be ascertained by trial and error, but the Histogram Display (Manual

p33) with Digital Preview (Manual p116) is a great help.

This slow process of setting the correct exposure means that K mount lenses are not easy to use in dynamic situations or when lighting conditions are variable. But they can still be successful employed in steady light or in controlled environments when there is time to achieve a good exposure.

3.3.2

Camera Set-up for K Mount Lenses

To use K mount lenses: the Green Button must be customised to perform stop down metering; the RAW/Fx button customised to digital preview with histogram; and the lens aperture ring option must be enabled.

On the K-50 the Green Button does not have to be explicitly customised.

It appears that enabling the lens aperture option is all that is needed. Once this is done, fitting a K mount lens and selecting Manual mode automatically configures the Green Button for stop down metering. So to enable the use of the lens aperture ring:

The problem happens on all Pentax DSLR, not just the K-50.

There is of course the alternative possibility of using an external light meter (!).

↓ Using Aperture Ring

OK ↓ Enable

OK and repeated MENU to exit

This only needs to be done once, and can be left as set for automatic lenses. The

Green Button works as normal when a K

described in § 4.1

A or K

AF2 mount lens is fitted.

Finally, customising the RAW/Fx button to perform digital preview is

3.4 Using Legacy Lens

3.4.1

Mount Lenses

These can use all exposure modes, but must be manually focused:

1. Set the lens’s aperture ring to the ‘A’ position.

2. Switch off the camera, fit the lens and switch the camera back on.

3. Input the lens’s focal length as described in § 3.1

4. Select the desired exposure mode.

5. To take a photograph:

(a) Manually focus the lens as described in § 3.2

(b) Take the photograph as for a fully automatic lens.

3.4.2

K Mount Lenses

Do the following to mount and use an M-series lens once the initial set-up is complete:

1. Switch off the camera, fit the lens and then switch the camera back on.

2. Input the lens’s focal length as described in § 3.1

3. Select Manual mode, and set the required ISO value.

4. To take a photograph:

(a) Set the desired value on the lens’s aperture ring.

(b) Manually focus the lens as described in § 3.2

ii. Press RAW/Fx to get a digital preview with histogram (see § 4.1

iii. Press OK to go back to data screen if the exposure is incorrect.

Adjust exposure by pressing and moving the rear e-dial. Press to retain correction or the Green Button to reset it.

iv. Go back to step

4(c)i , and repeat the process until the exposure

is correct.

This does not have to be repeated for every photograph if the aperture and lighting conditions do not change.

(d) Press the shutter button to actually take the picture.

4 Button Customisation

The authors current preferences for the Raw/Fx and AF/AE-L buttons are

Digital Preview and AE Lock respectively. The following describes how to achieve this:

4.1 RAW/Fx

This is customised to digital preview with histogram display as follows:

→ 4

↓ Button Customization

OK ↓ RAW/Fx

OK OK ↓ Digital Preview

↓ Histogram Display and select

OK and repeated MENU to exit

Now, pressing RAW/Fx displays a preview on the rear screen with a histogram.

The rear e-dial can be used to magnify the preview image to check focus. Pressing the OK button returns to the exposure mode screen so a correction can be made if necessary; or half depressing the shutter button ends preview and invokes autofocus.

Alternative RAW/Fx options are:

• File Format – JPEG or RAW (default)

• Exposure Bracketing

• Optical Preview

• Composition Adjustment

• AF Active Area

4.2 AF/AE-L

This is customised to AE lock as follows:

→ 4

↓ Button Customization

OK ↓ AF/AE-L

OK OK ↓ AE Lock

OK and repeated MENU to exit

Now, pressing AF/AE-L locks the exposure setting until the button is pressed again, or the camera goes into standby or is switched off.

Alternative AF/AE-L options are:

• Autofocus with both the shutter button and AF/AE-L (AF1) (default)

• Autofocus only with AF/AE-L (AF2)

• Stop shutter button autofocus when AF/AE-L pressed
