What You Need to Know about Safety Instructions

Important Safety Information

WARNING

To reduce risk of fire, electric shock, serious injury, or death when using your washer, follow these basic precautions:

1.

Read all instructions before using washer.

2.

Be sure washer is properly grounded.

3.

Do not wash articles that have been cleaned in, washed in, soaked in, or spotted with gasoline, dry-cleaning solvents, or other flammable or explosive substances. Vapors could ignite or explode.

4.

Do not add gasoline, drycleaning solvents, or other flammable or explosive substances to wash water.

Vapors could ignite or explode.

5.

Do not store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors and liquids near this or any other appliance.

6.

Do not allow children to play on or in washer. Close supervision of children is necessary when washer is used near children, a safety rule for all appliances.

7.

Before washer is removed from service or discarded, remove door to washing compartment.

Do not reach into washer if wash tub is moving.

9.

Do not install or store washer where it will be exposed to water and/or weather.

10. Do not tamper with washer controls.

11. Do not repair or replace any part of washer or attempt any service, unless specifically recommended in user-maintenance instructions or in published user-repair instructions that you understand and have skills to carry out.

12. To reduce risk of electric shock or fire, do not use extension cords or adapters to connect washer to electrical power source.

13. Use your washer only for its intended purpose: noncommercial clothes washing.

14. Always disconnect washer from electrical supply before attempting any service.

Installation Instructions. All connections for water, drain, electrical power, and grounding must comply with local codes and be made by licensed personnel when required.

16. To reduce risk of fire, do not use washer to launder clothes which have traces of any flammable substance, such as vegetable oil, cooking oil, machine oil, flammable chemicals, thinner, etc., or anything containing wax or chemicals, such as mops and cleaning cloths. Flammable substances may cause fabric to catch fire by itself.

17. Use only fabric softeners or products to eliminate static that are appropriate for automatic washers.

18. Keep your washer in good condition. Bumping or dropping washer can damage safety features. If damage occurs, have washer checked by qualified service technician.

19. Replace worn power cords and/ or loose plugs.

20. Loading door must be closed whenever washer is agitating or spinning. Do not bypass loading door switch by permitting washer to operate with loading door open.

21. Always read and follow manufacturer’s instructions on packages of laundry and cleaning aids. Heed all warnings or precautions. To reduce risk of poisoning or chemical burns, keep products away from children at all times, preferably, in a locked cabinet.

22. Never operate washer with guards and/or panels removed.

23. Do not operate washer with missing or broken parts.

Shows time.

When a cycle is selected, it shows agitation time. After cycle is started, it shows total wash time or delayed start timer.

9 WASH TIME

Allows user to change agitation time for cycles. Increases wash time in one-minute intervals.

As time increases, number of bars activated in dress symbol increase.

10 WATER LEVEL

Allows user to adjust water level to match size of load.

Five options are available; small, medium/small, medium, large, and super plus. As water level increases, light bars will rise within tub symbol.

11 WASH TEMP.

Allows water temperature to be changed up to end of 'fill' portion of cycle. As temperature increases, thermometer display bars rise within symbol.

12 DELAY START

Option allows a delay starting washer from 15 minutes to 24 hours.

13 SOAK

Allows a period to soak clothes with another selected cycle, or to be used alone as a soaking only period. Useful for heavily soiled or stained garments.

14 SAVE CUSTOM SETTINGS

Allows user to save customized cycle different from factory preset.

15 CYCLE ADVANCE

Allows user to advance to a specific activity within cycle (i.e. SPIN, or

RINSE), or shorten cycle if desired. Pressing pad decreases cycle time in one-minute increments.

16 SIGNAL VOLUME

Allows user to select one of four volume levels, including sound being turned off.

17 EXTRA RINSE

Provides another rinse cycle to thoroughly rinse clothes of soap and other detergents. Good for baby clothes or people with sensitive skin.

18 RINSE/SPIN

Provides an independent 7-minute cold rinse/spin cycle for objects not requiring agitation cycle, like lingerie or items not to be used in a dryer. Only water level is changeable with this cycle.

7-minute high-speed, spin-only cycle for wringing out garments like towels, and items not to be used in a dryer.

Use only liquid bleach in dispenser. To use powdered bleach, add to wash tub with detergent.

Carefully pour recommended amount of bleach into dispenser during first washer fill. See table.

Be careful not to spill undiluted bleach. It is a strong chemical and can damage cabinet finishes and some fabrics if not properly diluted.

Follow bleach manufacturer’s label for proper use.

Dispenser

Fabric softener dispenser is located on top of agitator.

Dispenser automatically releases liquid fabric softener at proper time during rinse cycle.

Fabric Softener Use Tips

• Liquid fabric softeners are dispensed during final rinse. Do not combine with bleach, bluing, starch, detergents, soaps, or packaged water conditioners during rinse.

• Do not use fabric softener in dispenser during DOUBLE WASH cycle.

• Do not mix powdered detergent with liquid softener in dispenser or softener will become gummy.

• To prevent build-up, fill dispenser with clean water in wash cycles when not using softener.

To use dispenser, follow these steps:

1.

Pour liquid fabric softener into dispenser, using amount recommended on package.

2.

Add water up to fill level, but do not exceed tip of fill arrow indicator.

FABRIC SOFTENER MUST BE DILUTED FOR USE.

• Do not stop washer during first spin or dispenser will empty too soon.

• Never pour fabric softener directly onto clothes or spots and stains may result. To remove softener stains, soak in soapy solution of

soap and wash garment as usual.

• For best softener performance, set water level to medium or higher.

3.

Clean softener dispenser after each use.

Remove dispenser housing from agitator by squeezing lower part of dispenser and pulling up on housing. Housing should snap loose. Rinse dispenser housing, dispenser cup (not shown), and housing base, in hot soapy water.

Clean inside of agitator. Use small brush on hole and slots in two funnel rings for thorough cleaning.

After cleaning, replace housing base and dispenser cup. Push dispenser housing directly down onto top of housing base until base and housing firmly snap together.

Press this pad to use saved settings.

To save a cycle:

• Select the cycle

• Select desired WASH TIME, WASH

LEVEL, and WASH TEMP.

• Choose desired OPTIONS.

• Press the SAVE CUSTOM

SETTINGS pad to save the favorite cycle into memory.

To begin your favorite cycle that has been saved, press the FAVORITE

CYCLE pad and the START pad. If you wish the cycle chosen to return to the factory preset, press the specified cycle pad again.

If a favorite cycle is not saved into memory the washer will display the

REGULAR cycle preset factory settings when the FAVORITE CYCLE pad is pressed.

The customized cycle will stay in memory until another customized cycle is programmed. If your unit is unplugged or power has been lost, settings will need to be reprogrammed.

1. Prepare clothes for washing

For best wash results:

• Remove items from pockets and cuffs

• Close zippers and fasteners; mend rips and tears

• Sort items into separate loads

• Pre-treat stains and heavily soiled areas

2. Select wash cycle

Press a cycle pad to select the appropriate cycle for your wash load. The display will glow and show the preset agitation time. For best results when cleaning heavily soiled items, use longer agitation time, up to 18 minutes maximum. Lightly soiled items require less wash time.

3. Adjust settings

You can change the wash time, water level, or water temperature to match the load you are washing.

4. Press OPTIONS pad, if desired

See How to Use Options on page 7.

Clothes should fill wash tub but should not be packed. Loosely fill tub with clothes no higher than top row of holes. Items must move freely through wash/rinse water. Adjust WATER LEVEL, if needed.

6. To stop or cancel a cycle.

• Press the STOP/CANCEL pad once to pause an active cycle. The wash time will flash. To resume the cycle press the START pad.

• To cancel a cycle press the STOP /CANCEL pad twice.

How to Use Options

SPIN ONLY

Press pad once to program a

7-minute spin cycle. Cycle settings cannot be altered. Press the START pad to begin.

WARM RINSE

The WARM RINSE selection can only be used in conjunction with the warm water setting.

To use WARM RINSE:

• Select REGULAR cycle.

• Select warm water temperature by pressing WASH TEMP pad accordingly.

• Press WARM RINSE pad.

• Press START pad.

DOUBLE WASH

Only to be used with PERM PRESS or REGULAR settings.

• Select either PERM PRESS or

REGULAR settings.

• Select DOUBLE WASH option pad.


To deliver extra detergent for second wash:

• LIQUID DETERGENT: place in fabric softener dispenser for use in second wash. DO NOT use dispenser for fabric softener.

• POWDER DETERGENT: place extra detergent in tub for use in first wash; recommend approximately 1½ times normal amount.

DELAY START

To use DELAY START option:

• Select start time. Each press of pad will increase timer by 15 minutes up to one hour, then one hour at a time up to 24.

• Add detergent and/or softener with clothes.

• Press START to begin timer.

A 'Delay Start' message will be on display until wash begins. If a number of hours are selected, the message

HOURS will flash beneath time on display until time has cycled down to starting time. Settings cannot be altered once the settings are in place. DELAY START is cancelled by pressing STOP/CANCEL.

SOAK

To use SOAK option alone:

• Press the SOAK pad to select this option. The bars will light up in the dress symbol and the display will indicate the wash time.

• Press the CYCLE ADVANCE pad to increase the length of soak time up to 36 minutes.

To choose SOAK option to allow 10minute soak period within REGULAR or PERM PRESS cycle:

• Select REGULAR or PERM

PRESS cycle

• Press SOAK option pad.

RINSE/SPIN

To use this option:

• Press RINSE/SPIN option pad to allow for a 5-minute cold rinse/

5-minute spin cycle.

• Adjust WATER LEVEL if desired

(this is the only setting adjustable for this option).

• Press START pad to begin.

EXTRA RINSE

This option can be used with other options, except SOAK, SPIN ONLY, and RINSE/SPIN:

• Select cycle choice.

• Press EXTRA RINSE option pad.

• Select another OPTIONS pad, if desired– see limitations under header.


Rinse will be with cold water unless

WARM RINSE is selected with

EXTRA RINSE.

You may add an extra rinse to a cycle until the first rinse fill is completed.

SIGNAL VOLUME

The pad has three volume settings:

Pressing pad once: soft

Pressing pad twice: medium

Pressing pad 3 times: loudest

To turn signal off:

• Press pad once beyond the highest volume setting. The SIGNAL

VOLUME pad light will go out, indicating sound is off.

The signal volume selected for a previous cycle will remain the same until it is changed or turned off.

CYCLE ADVANCE

To pause a cycle and advance the cycle to a specific stage within a running cycle (i.e. SPIN, RINSE, etc.):

• Press CYCLE ADVANCE pad until desired stage lights up at top of display.

• Press START pad to begin cycle.

To shorten cycle time within a running cycle:

• Press CYCLE ADVANCE pad to drop wash time down one minute at a time. Hold pad down to reduce time quickly.

• When desired time is reached, press START pad to begin cycle.

SAVE CUSTOM

SETTINGS

One custom setting may be saved to each SELECT CYCLE choice, but only one may be saved at any given time.

To program setting:

• Select cycle.

• Program adjustable settings (i.e.

WATER LEVEL, WASH TIME, etc.).

• Choose options, if desired.

• Press SAVE CUSTOM SETTINGS pad.

• Setting may be activated by pressing FAVORITE CYCLE pad and then START pad.

Settings will be saved as long as electrical power to washer is maintained, or until another cycle is customized. Pressing cycle button again will return settings to factory preset.

The tub symbol on the display measures amount of water being used for wash cycle. It has five stages

The thermometer symbol measures temperature of water being used for cycle. It has five stages:

Cold–household supply line temperature for the cold-running water in house.

Regulated cold–70°F (regulated by washer thermister unit)

Warm–Mixture of 40% hot water and 60% cold water from household supply.

Regulated hot–120°F (regulated by washer thermister unit)

Hot–household supply line temperature for hot-running water in house.

Status Words

Words will display to tell you what your washer is doing.

The numbers show time.

When a cycle is selected they show agitation time.

After the START pad is selected, they will show the total wash time or count down time for a delayed start.

WASH displays when the clothes are being agitated.

RINSE displays when the clothes are being rinsed.

SPIN displays when the tub is spinning to remove the water.

SOAK displays when the washer is paused or the clothes are soaking.

DELAYED START displays when the washer is set for a delayed start.

The dress symbol on display indicates how much agitation time has been selected. If bottom section of dress is activated, the minimal amount of time has been selected for that cycle. If all bars inside dress have been activated, then maximum amount of agitation time has been selected. See chart below for agitation times.

Error Signals

If an invalid selection is chosen, the two-digit display will indicate “Er” and the lowest volume signal will sound. The control will then display what was previously displayed before the invalid selection was made. Refer to the chart below for a listing of all invalid options per cycle.

Features, Hints, and Care

Stops and Starts

Wash action consists of periods of agitation, with pauses or periods of soaking. For best results, do not advance cycle through pauses. Pauses in the wash cycle are a normal and necessary occurrence.

Pad Beep

This feature beeps at the lowest signal volume with each press of any pad. To turn this feature off:

• Press STOP/OFF to turn off unit.

• Press SIGNAL VOLUME and STOP/OFF pads at the same time.

Repeat this procedure to turn the pad signal back on.

Cleaner Clothes

Water temperature affects how clean clothes become. If your clothes are not as clean as you would like, check your water heater temperature. You may need to turn your water temperature up for better results. Also, check that your water hoses are hooked up correctly. If they are switched you might be getting cold water in your warm and hot cycles.

Hard water does not remove soil as well as soft water. Check with your local water company to see if you have hard water. If you have hard water, try softening it with a packaged conditioner or use a little more detergent.

Lint Filter

Amana's self cleaning lint filter works throughout the wash cycle to constantly remove lint and other residue from the water. Located between the outer and inner tub, the lint filter removes lint as water passes from the bottom of the outer tub back to the inner tub. As water passes from the outer tub to the inner tub, water is forced through the bottom of the lint filter. The filter traps lint under the filter until the spin cycle begins. During the spin cycle centrifugal force removes the lint by pulling it off the bottom of the filter and washing it down the drain.

Child Lockout

This feature disables all the control pads and displays "LO" (lockout). The washer cannot be programmed when this feature is enabled.

To lockout the control:

• Press STOP/OFF to turn off unit.

• Press START and STOP/OFF pad at the same time.

To enable the control, press START and STOP/OFF at the same time again.

Motor Overload Protector

Internal overload protector automatically stops motor in event of overload.

Overload protector resets in approximately 3 minutes and motor automatically restarts. If overload protector stops motor again, stop using washer and call service technician. Loading wash tub too full may result in motor overload.

Risers

Risers or air cushions may be installed if pipes knock or pound when flow of water stops. Risers are more efficient when installed as close as possible to water supply faucets.

Automatic Balance System

Your new washer will automatically adjust to unbalanced loads without shutting down or interrupting the cycle. The cycle will automatically complete at the fastest spin speed possible.

In a severe out-of-balance condition, clothes may contain excessive moisture.

If this should happen, simply redistribute the clothes, and press the SPIN

ONLY pad.

Safety Lid Switch

The washer will not agitate or spin when the lid is open for any reason. This is for your personal safety. If the lid is opened mid-cycle, operation will automatically start when lid is closed.

General Washer Care

• Use only damp or sudsy cloth for cleaning control panel. Some cleaning product sprays may harm control panel finish or may damage interior of hood.

• Wipe washer cabinet as needed. If detergent, bleach, or other washing products are spilled on cabinet, wipe immediately. Some products will cause permanent damage if spilled on cabinet.

• Top of washer should not be used for removing garment stains. Some stain removers, such as rust remover, may damage cabinet finish.

• Do not use scouring pads or abrasive cleansers.

• Do not lay sharp or rough objects on or against washer. Finish could be damaged.

• Remove pins, buckles, or other sharp objects from clothes to prevent scratching interior parts.

• Leave lid open after use to allow inside of washer to dry, and to help prevent musty odors from developing.

• Do not allow small children to play on or around washer.

• Do not move washer without reinstalling shipping brace (Part #40068201) and shipping plug (Part #40073001). See Moving Washer to New Location section.

Moving and Storage

Cold Storage and Non-Use Periods

!

WARNING

Explosive hydrogen gas may be produced in a hot water system that has not been used for two weeks or more. Before using washer, if hot water system has not been used for such a period, turn on all hot water faucets and let water flow for several minutes to release accumulated hydrogen gas. Hydrogen gas is flammable: Do not smoke or use an open flame when flushing water lines.

Cold Weather Care

If washer is delivered when outside temperature is below freezing or if washer is stored in unheated room or area during cold months, do not operate until

washer has warmed to room temperature. Do not install or operate washer where temperatures will drop below freezing.

Cold Weather Storage

If washer must be stored in seasonal home or storage building, use one of the following storage methods.

METHOD 1

1.

Turn off water supply faucets and disconnect hoses. Drain water from both hoses.

2.

Add one gallon of non-toxic RV antifreeze (available from hardware or recreational vehicle dealers) to washer tub.

3.

Select SPIN ONLY cycle.

4.

Allow cycle to spin for 1–2 minutes to drain water. Some antifreeze will also be lost. (If you have a septic system, contact antifreeze manufacturer and make sure it will not harm system.)

5.

Press the STOP/OFF pad. Dry inner wash tub, disconnect electrical plug, and close washer lid. If moving washer, disconnect drain hose.

Move and store washer ONLY in upright position. To remove antifreeze after storage, run washer through a complete cycle using ½ cup of detergent. DO NOT ADD CLOTHES TO CYCLE.

METHOD 2

1.

Select SPIN ONLY cycle. Run through complete spin cycle to remove excess water.

2.

Turn off water supply faucets and disconnect hoses. Drain water from both hoses.

3.

Dry inner wash tub, disconnect electrical plug, and close washer lid. If moving washer, disconnect drain hose. Move and store washer ONLY in upright position.

4.

It is normal for some water to remain inside pump. To prevent damage to washer and pump if remaining water freezes, allow washer to warm to 24 to 48 hours after removing from storage, so water can thaw before use.

Extended Non-Use

IMPORTANT: To avoid possible property damage from flooding, turn off water supply to washer during extended periods of non-use.

To prevent mold or mildew, leave lid open so moisture inside machine can evaporate.

When closing your home for extended periods, have service technician drain washer to avoid stagnant water.

You may save time and money by checking items below before calling for service. List includes common concerns that are not the result of defective workmanship or materials. If your question is not explained below, contact Amana

Adjust water heater as necessary.

Avoid using hot water elsewhere before or during washer use, or there may not be enough hot water for proper cleaning. If problem continues, enlarge capacity of hot water system, or use for only one application at a time.

Washing Concerns

To keep clothes looking white or bright and to prevent a gradual build-up of soil or water hardness minerals on them, use proper washing practices at all times. If you notice that your clothes are not as bright as they should be, take corrective measures immediately.

Add recommended amount of detergent to dispenser. For top loading washers add a low-sudsing detergent to dispenser drawer before loading clothes. Mild detergents are not suitable for average soil.

Unremoved soil

Wash whites separately. Separate light from heavily soiled items.

Clothes can pick up soil from dirty wash water.

Skin soil is hard to remove. Check hem edge of sheets and pillowcases, bottom end of t-shirts, etc. If this portion is white and center is yellow, the fabric contains unremoved soil. Use sufficient detergent and a hot wash. Chlorine bleach or powdered bleach may be needed.

To remove rust spots use a rust remover such as Whink, that is recommended for color-fast garments. Test a portion of colored garments prior to washing. Use a rust remover recommended for use with washing machines (Iron Out) for an over all yellowing appearance.

Some white fabrics turn yellow with age and cannot be whitened.

No correction for bleach damaged clothes. Always follow label directions.

Fasten all hooks zippers. Mend tears. Remove objects from pockets.

Fabrics which shed lint should not be washed with fabrics that receive lint. Knits and permanent press attract lint. Wash these only with similar items. Use fabric softener sheets in the dryer.

Laundry Aids

Pretreat Products

Use a pretreating agent and soak overnight to remove stains and soils.

Always follow manufacturer’s instructions with any pretreatment product.

Do not use a pretreating agent with chlorine bleach.

Do not use pretreaters around the washer or dryer control panel. They may harm the finish or panel markings.

Detergents/Soaps

Follow detergent manufacturer suggestions for detergent amount per load. Detergents are available in the following types:

Granular detergents are the most effective on mud or clay types of soils and are more effective than liquids in hard water.

Liquid detergents are good for cold water washing, pretreating stains, and removing greasy oily stains.

Combination detergents, those with bleach or fabric softeners, provide convenience while adding stain removal, brightening, or fabric softening properties.

In some cases you may need to adjust the recommended amount of detergent to use. Decrease detergent amount if white streaks or white residue is noticed on dark colored clothing items. If you experience white streaks or residue on dark colored clothing items, try the following:

•

Add garment to washer without detergent and using hottest water temperature setting (check garment care label to verify hot water will not damage clothing). Check suds level during agitation or tumbling. If there are suds in the washer, continue washing garments without detergent until suds disappear.

•

Decrease detergent if you see suds surging over the standpipe for any washing machine, or if you see a suds level higher than halfway up window of front loading washers. Slightly increase detergent amount if cleaning performance has decreased.

For Front Loading Washers, use of low sudsing or high efficiency (HE) detergents are recommended.

Soaps and detergents will not give good washing results in hard water. Soap in hard water will form sticky deposits.

Consider using a liquid detergent when washing in cold water.

Bleaches

Use chlorine bleach to remove certain stains, disinfect, and keep clothes white.

Use all-fabric bleach to maintain color.

Do not use powdered bleach in the bleach dispenser. Powdered bleach can be used only in the detergent compartment on front loading washers.

Use liquid bleach in the proper dispenser compartment only. Do not add bleach to the washload, it may damage color or fabric.

Follow directions on care label of garment.

Do not use bleach as a substitute for detergent .

Always measure the bleach. Never exceed maximum level on bleach dispenser.

Don’t mix chlorine bleach and ammonia in the same wash cycle.

Fabric Softeners

Use to soften clothing items.

Do not add fabric softener directly to load. Use fabric softener dispenser, or follow fabric softener manufacturer instructions. For front loading washers see “Installation and Operating Instructions” for adding items to wash load.

Non-Precipitating Type: These products soften water by tying up the hardness minerals and are recommended if using soap when water is over three grains hard (See table page 4)
