Installation Instructions

Heat Detectors

1.0

Notice

These instructions cover the installation of the D603, D604 and D605 Heat Detectors in a fire system supervised by a compatible Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP).

Install, test and maintain the D603, D604 and D605 according to these instructions, NFPA 72, Local Codes and the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Failure to follow these instructions may result in failure of the device to operate properly. Bosch Security Systems, Inc. is not responsible for improperly installed, tested or maintained devices.

These instructions contain procedures to follow in order to avoid personal injury and damage to equipment.

Test the D603, D604, D605 and the FACP in accordance with NFPA 72.

Device Description

The D603, D604 and D605 are Electronic Rate-of-Rise/Fixed Temperature Heat Detectors. They are designed to work with the D200 Series bases to provide general property protection.

When properly installed using the D200 Series bases, 2-wire supervision is provided by IN/OUT wiring of the positive (+) power line. This causes the FACP to initiate a trouble signal when a detector head is removed from its base. 4-wire system supervision is provided by an EOL power supervision device, such as the D275, or a D293E and an EOL resistor as specified by the FACP manufacturer.

The D603, D604 and D605 are not life-safety devices.

Testing the Installation

Mounting the Detector

Use the following steps to mount the detector base and head:

1) Mount and wire the base according to its installation instructions.

2) Mount the detector head to the base by turning it clockwise until it clicks into place. When it is secure, the alignment arrow will be lined up with the tamper screw hole. See Figure 1.

The detector heads are keyed and should not be forced onto the bases.

Testing the Installation

Use the following guidelines when testing the installed detector head/base combination:

• Check the wiring from the FACP to the last detector head on each run for proper polarity and continuity.

- Make sure each run terminates with an EOL resistor as specified by the FACP manufacturer.

- Make sure 4-wire runs terminate with EOL modules or D293E bases.

• Apply power to the system. Check for alarms.

- Note which detectors are in alarm (if any) and then shut the system down. Remove these detectors from their bases and re-check the bases for proper wiring. If the problems persist, replace the affected detectors or swap them with known good units. This will identify if the problem is caused by the detector or the base.

- In the event of a system alarm with no detector alarms present, remove all detectors and check the wiring at each base. Pay close attention to the wiring of each EOL resistor or EOL module.

• When the system is free of alarms, check each detector to ensure that the red LED indicator is flashing approximately every seven seconds. This verifies that the detector is receiving power and operating properly.

If the detector LED is flashing quickly (approximately once every second), the detector is either too cold or defective.

Allow it to warm slowly to room temperature. The LED should resume its normal flash pattern of approximately once every 7 seconds. If it continues to flash quickly once the detector has reached average room temperature, the detector is defective and must be replaced.

Maintaining the Detector Head

• Test each detector individually to ensure it will cause a control panel alarm. Reset the control panel after each test.

• To alarm the detectors, do one of the following:

- Place a magnet horizontally against the detector's Test Point (see Figure 1). Center the magnet over the “T” marked on the head to activate an internal reed switch, or

- Expose the thermistor (see Figure 1) to a heat source such as a hair dryer or a shielded heat lamp. Expose the thermistor until the detector goes into alarm and the alarm LED latches on.

When a detector alarms, the red LED indicator will activate and latch into the ON position. Be sure to clear the alarm before proceeding to the next detector.

• Reset the detector by momentarily removing power.

• Finally, check the overall loading of the alarm loop by measuring the voltage across each EOL resistor. This voltage should equal or exceed the minimum specified by the control panel manufacturer.

5.0

Maintaining the Detector Head

Notify all concerned parties prior to any maintenance or testing of the fire alarm system, and then again after completion of these activities.

• At least once a year, the detector and base should be cleaned. Use a vacuum or clean/dry compressed air.

• Do not paint the detectors. Paint or other foreign matter covering the thermistor may prohibit detection.
