and normally pose no problem for experienced computer users.
However, if questions do arise STARFACE PBX offers context-sensitive online help that opens directly from
the user interface for the specific function or element where help is needed.
This manual provides users and administrators with a comprehensive introduction to the system. It includes
step-by-step installation and configuration instructions for the STARFACE PBX server, as well as detailed
technical explanations and parameter settings. This document also explains all operating elements and
functions, as well as their attributes.
If you have additional questions or require more information, especially regarding customization or
expansion of your STARFACE PBX system, please contact one of our certified STARFACE partners.
Please note that STARFACE PBX is a software product that is being continually developed and improved.
Therefore, you might find that the version of this manual supplied with your product does not precisely match
the product software version. The installation of updates or patches can also affect the scope of functions or
the appearance of certain operating elements. We therefore recommend that when in doubt, you use the
online help provided by the STARFACE PBX system. We reserve the right to make changes and

Installation
Minimum Hardware Requirements
2.1
To ensure trouble-free operation, even under high loads, the computer hardware should meet the following
minimum requirements:
•
Intel-compatible processor with minimum 1 GHz clock frequency
•
512 MByte RAM
•
20 GByte hard drive (recommended: RAID-1 System)
•
Bootable CD-ROM drive
•
Network card
If you have special needs, or to find out if your existing equipment is sized appropriately for STARFACE,
please contact your STARFACE dealer.
The following sections describe the process to install STARFACE PBX using the supplied CD-ROM. If
you are using STARFACE APPLIANCE or STARFACE HOSTED PBX, you can skip this step and go
directly to 2.2 Initial Configuration of the STARFACE Server.
2.1.1
Installation Prerequisites
The software must generally be loaded onto a “bare” system, i.e., all partitions must have been deleted.
Otherwise, they are automatically and completely deleted during the installation process. Therefore, any data
present on the computer before installation should be backed up, as they will be lost during the installation
process. It is not possible to install in parallel to existing partitions or data. The computer on which the
software will be installed must be connected via its network card to the local network within the firewall
during the initial installation.
After the hardware and installation requirements are met, the actual installation takes place in two steps:
•
Load the software onto the computer
•
Use the web browser to configure the STARFACE system
8
STARFACE ©2007 by vertico software GmbH
Manual - for STARFACE Version 2.0
2.1.2
Install the Software on the Computer
The server must be connected via a network connector to the company-internal LAN. In addition, if ISDN will
be used to connect to the fixed network, the server must also be connected to the ISDN terminal via an ISDN
adapter and an ISDN cable. Finally, the server must be capable of either obtaining an IP address
automatically via a DHCP server or be manually assigned an available IP address during installation.
Ensure that the hard drive does not have any operating system installed on it and that the CD-ROM drive is
entered into the BIOS as the first boot medium (or the second boot medium after the first hard drive on the
first controller). Please note that you can change this setting so that the server boots from the hard drive only
after STARFACE is installed successfully. Access to the BIOS should be secured with a password.
2.1.2.1 Starting the Installation Process
Place the CD containing the STARFACE software into the CD drive and boot the server.
At this time, a customized version of the Fedora-Linux operating system is installed based on an automatic
hardware recognition process. Typically, all commercially available components are recognized by this
process.
The installation start screen is displayed.
Press Return or Enter to start the installation process. The installer will detect the graphical input/output
components of your system before launching the graphical installation wizard.
If installation is not being carried out on a STARFACE APPLIANCE:
When installing from CD-ROM, an error can occur with the boot loader at this point, and the boot process will
be terminated. Refer to 7 Troubleshooting.
Figure: Detecting Graphic Card, Monitor, and Mouse
After the hardware is detected, the graphical installation wizard launches.

Manual - for STARFACE Version 2.0
2.1.2.2 Selecting the Language
Choose the language setting of the operating system. This language will guide you during the installation
and will be used in system messages and the console of the server. The language used in STARFACE will
be determined later and is not affected by this setting.
2.1.2.3 Selecting the Keyboard Layout
This selection is particularly important when setting the root password because the English keyboard layout
switches some keys (in particular ‘y’ and ‘z’) compared to the German keyboard.
The default selection “Deutsch (latin1 ohne ‘tote’ Taste/Akzente)” [=German (Latin1 without ‘dead’
keys/accents)] is the most common setting for the German language area.

2.1.2.4 Partitioning the Hard Drive
The hard drive can now be partitioned. You can partition the hard drive either manually or automatically.
Settings for Automatic Partitioning:
You can choose one of three partitioning settings:
•
Retain the existing partition.
•
Remove all partitions from the system.
•
Retain partitions and use free disk space.
In this screen, you also choose the hard drive to be partitioned.

Caution!
During partitioning, all data present in the partition is lost and cannot be restored. If you are
partitioning a hard drive that already contains data, you should first back up the data to another
medium. There is no warranty for loss of data during partitioning.
The option “Review the partitions created” is already selected. It serves to open an overview of the partitions
during the next step. At that time, you can make any necessary changes to the partitioning. Clear this option
to skip the partitioning check and continue with 2.1.2.5 Configuring Network Settings.

Manual Partitioning
If you choose manual partitioning, you can perform several activities on this screen, such as creating logical
volumes or software RAIDs, as well as increasing or reducing the size of partitions.
Figure: Setting Options for Manual Partitioning
You should deviate from the suggested partitioning only if you have a particular need based on your
configuration. For normal STARFACE installations, the recommended partitioning should be used.

2.1.2.5 Configuring Network Settings
You will now configure the network. In this step, you can assign an IP address and subnet mask to the
individual network cards if the computer is not connected to a DHCP server or if you do not want the network
address to be assigned dynamically. If you are going to enter the server name manually, you must also
define the gateway and the various DNS servers.
The gateway defines the IP address of the computer or router that will function as the network’s interface to
the Internet.

2.1.2.6 Selecting the Time Zone
The next step involves defining the computer’s time zone. Use your mouse to select the yellow dot on the
world map closest to your location. You can also define the time zone by selecting from the list. Select the
UTC option (Universal Time Coordinated) to convert automatically to summer time.
2.1.2.7 Entering the root Password
The administrator on a Linux system is always assigned the user name “root“. The password for root must
be at least six characters in length. You must type in the password two times. If the two entries do not match,
you will be asked to repeat both entries.
15
STARFACE ©2007 by vertico software GmbH
Manual - for STARFACE Version 2.0
The password for root should be secure. A secure password consists of a combination of ciphers as well as
upper- and lower-case letters that do not form words (example of a secure password: Atz38ppj). Please note
that passwords are case sensitive.
Once you have entered the root password, you have completed the initial configuration of the operating
system. Confirm that you want to start installation and the system files will start to copy to your hard drive.
2.1.2.8 Completing the Installation
Before the transfer process starts, you will see a summary of the installation. A complete installation log can
be viewed after the system restarts (in the file “./root/install.log“).
Note: The console commands to open the installation log and the "kickstart" file are
less /root/install.log and less /root/anaconda-ks.cfg, respectively.

After successful installation, the computer must be restarted. First remove the installation CD from the drive.
After the restart, STARFACE can be configured and operated from any computer within the local network via
the web browser by typing “http://<server_IP_address >“ into the address line of the browser.
2.1.2.9 Using the Adminshell
After the server restart, the Adminshell is displayed. This is a useful tool for system diagnosis and
monitoring.

Initial Configuration of the STARFACE Server
2.2
As soon as the operating system and server have been installed, you can configure STARFACE from any
computer via a web browser.
STARFACE should either be assigned a fixed IP address or have obtained a dynamic IP address via DHCP.
This IP address is output to the browser console after the boot procedure is completed. To start the
configuration process, type the IP address of the STARFACE server into the address line of the web browser
in the following format:
http://123.123.123.123/
where 123.123.123.123 represents the IP address.
The configuration menu opens in the browser.
Note: At this point, you can select the language to be used by STARFACE from the list at the top
right-hand side of the page.
Initial configuration consists of three steps:
Click
•
Detect and set up telephones and adapters in the local network that will communicate via the
server.
•
Configure the lines the server will use to connect to the telephone network.
•
Set up the administrator account.
to start the initial configuration.
Note: All initial configuration tasks can also be carried out at a later time, with the sole exception of the
administrator account setup.
2.2.1
Step 1: Detect and Set Up Telephones
In this first step, all telephones and other equipment, such as fax and ATA adapters, are set up. There are
two methods of completing this task:
•
Automatic telephone detection and configuration
•
Manual telephone setup

Important: Every user account that is created is automatically assigned a Plugin-Phone (the
softphone integrated into STARFACE). This means that Plugin-Phones do not have to be configured
by the administrator in order for users to place telephone calls!
2.2.1.1 Automatic Telephone Detection and Configuration
As long as you have standard brand, commercially available Voice-over-IP telephones, they will be detected
and configured automatically during the installation process.

2.2.1.2 Manual Telephone Configuration
The button
opens a dialog box for defining new telephones.
Enter the type of device (the drop-down list offers all standard telephones currently supported by
STARFACE) as well as the user name and password for the device. Depending on the telephone type (e.g.,
snom 190) the newly defined telephone is automatically configured with the predefined data for this
telephone type as soon as it is saved.
Note: If devices are not detected during the automatic search, the configuration data (user name,
password, server IP) must be entered manually into the settings for the device and the device then
restarted.
2.2.1.2.1
Advanced Configuration
If the telephone is not located within the local network, you must set NAT “yes” to allow the voice information
to be sent over the firewall/router.
Important: To operate external devices, some ports must be opened in the firewall between the local
network and the Internet (not the firewall for the STARFACE server). The following ports are affected:
5060 UDP (for the SIP protocol), 4569 UDP (for the IAX protocol), and 10000-20000 UDP (for data
transmission via RTP).
“restr. to IP“ restricts the device operation to the specified address.
Codecs allow the conversion of analog (voice) information to digital data and back (encoding and decoding).
It is possible to assign a codec explicitly to a device. Although STARFACE supports many of the usual
codecs, we recommend that you use Codec G.711 alaw or ulaw. G.711 has been recognized as having the

(relatively) high bitrate of up to 84 Kbps. In comparison, Codecs such as G.729 require a bitrate of only 8
Kbps, but have a latency of between 25 and 35 ms.
Note: Some Codecs must be licensed separately. For example, although G.729 is integrated into
STARFACE, it must be registered before use. The application to do this is located at
/usr/lib/asterisk/modules/g729/ and can be started with ./register-g729-32-bit.
2.2.1.2.2
Define New Device Type
If your device type is not in the list of standard devices,
you can create new device types. To do this, select
“new” from the list.
The “New Phone” screen allows you to configure the new device type. Assign a unique name to the device
type. In the lower portion of the screen, the fields “type”, “dtmfmode”, “canreinvit”, and “qualify“ are
predefined and usually do not need to be changed. All other fields are optional.

Options for Device Configuration:
type: The connection type for the device
peer: Can receive calls via the STARFACE server.
user: Can initiate calls via the STARFACE server.
friend: Can receive as well as initiate calls. This is the most common and in most cases
the recommended setting.
host: IP address (or DNS name) of the device, or “dynamic“ if the device does not have a static IP; i.e., if the
device is in a network with a DHCP server.
dtmfmode: Identifies the default tone dial method to be used. This is dependent on the telephone type being
defined (refer to the manufacturer documentation).
permit: IP address(es) that the client can use to register with the server. Use either an IP address (e.g.,
192.168.0.1) or a combined IP address/network mask (e.g., 192.168.0.2/255.255.255.0). Separate multiple
entries with commas.
24
STARFACE ©2007 by vertico software GmbH
Manual - for STARFACE Version 2.0
deny: This field is the opposite of “permit". IP addresses entered here will be denied access.
auth: Encoding method to be used during authentication.
canreinvite: "yes" allows clients to exchange data directly once the connection is set up (without
involvement of the server). Because some hardware components will fail with this setting, the default value
“no” should be retained.
disallow: We recommend that you disallow all Codecs by entering "all" here and then explicitly allow the
desired Codecs in the allow field. Multiple Codecs can be separated by commas; for example, alaw, ulaw.
insecure: "very" – Once the host is registered, it can place calls without further authentication.
"yes" – A peer can register just with an IP address (without defining a specific port).
port: Port number 5060 is predefined for the SIP protocol on the STARFACE server. This setting can be
replaced with a different port number that will be used exclusively for SIP.
qualify: Enter either "yes", "no", or a value in milliseconds. If "yes" is used, the server will check at regular
intervals whether the client can still be reached, whereby each query lasts 2000 ms. If the client does not
respond within this timeframe, STARFACE will consider it to be unavailable and will not forward any further
calls to it.
defaultip: Default IP address for an IAX client. If the value “dynamic” is set for the host field, STARFACE will
attempt to forward incoming calls for a previously unregistered IAX client to this IP address.
rtptimeout: Number of seconds after which a call is automatically ended if there is no data (RTP) traffic. This
is useful in cases where the user forgets to hang up the handset, for example.
rtpholdtimeout: Because rtptimeout does not react to a held call, this option lets you specify how long (in
seconds) a call may be on hold. This value must be greater than rtptimeout.

to finish the configuration of a new telephone. The new telephone appears in the list of
defined telephones, and the configuration you have set up is added to the list of device types.
You can open and edit the configuration at any time by clicking
in the list of telephones.
2.2.1.3 List of Defined Telephones
This page shows all previously defined telephones. Note: This list does not contain the IAX-Clients / PluginPhones. These are preconfigured by the system and cannot be edited. Each user is assigned a PluginPhone which he or she can activate by himself. The Plugin-Phone gets activated in the user’s phone
preferences and is labeled „IAX2/...“ (Refer to 5.8.5 Plugin-Phone).

2.2.2
Step 2: Configure Lines
2.2.2.1 General Configuration
Prefix: To distinguish between internal and external numbers, you can prefix a digit to the number to be
entered during dialing. This is important when three-digit internal numbers are assigned because they can’t
be distinguished from three-digit external numbers during dialing (for example, the emergency number 110 is
prefixed with a 0 and thus is clearly differentiated from the internal extension 100). If your previous telephone
system had a defined prefix for accessing outside lines, it can be retained for reasons of continuity.
The Deposit field defines a number where all calls not reaching an extension are sent; for example, calls to
unassigned numbers or to numbers for which no forwarding rules have been defined. By setting up an
attendant number, you prevent incoming calls from being “lost”.
The Number Range defines the locally assigned extension numbers (“internal numbers”) that users can dial
to communicate with other users within a STARFACE network. The numbers can, but need not, be identical
to the numbers dialed from outside the network to reach those extensions.
Click
to open the directory number (DN) identification. The internal DNs can be assigned names or other
identification to be displayed in place of the number in the Call Manager. For example, if the Marketing
department has multiple numbers, all of them can be identified simply as “Marketing”.

Manual - for STARFACE Version 2.0
2.2.2.2 Lines
Lines refer to the connections used by the STARFACE server for telephony.
These are:
•
Direct Internet connections via a Voice-over-IP provider.
•
Connections to an ISDN network via an ISDN provider.
•
Connections via a GSM adapter to a cellular network.
•
Connection to an analog device or to the analog telephone network.
Each line can be one of the following types:
•
Provider
•
GSM card
•
ISDN card external / ISDN card internal
•
Analog FXS
•
Analog FXO
If no cards are installed in the computer, or if they are not recognized, only the provider connection will be
available for selection. At this point, each line must be assigned a line name.
2.2.2.2.1
Provider Connection
Several VoIP providers are predefined in the STARFACE menu. However, you can also add new definitions.
Refer to your provider documentation for the directory number, user names, and password to use to
authenticate the line with the provider. Successful authentication is indicated when the line status symbol
turns green and the status changes to “Registered”.
2.2.2.2.2
Add New Provider or Edit Provider
You add new providers in the same way that you add new telephones. Refer to Section 2.2.1.2 Manual
Telephone Configuration.
Note! Only the providers you create can be edited.
2.2.2.2.3
Using Cards / Adapters
Installed cards are usually detected by STARFACE and can be selected from the “Card Type” menu. You
can assign any name to the line; however, it should be a name that allows you to identify the line later. For
example, you can name the line with the name of the ISDN provider

Select the check box under a connector to assign it. Connected lines - i.e., those that are physically plugged
in - are identified with a green icon. Configured connectors that are not yet plugged in are yellow. Connectors
that are neither configured nor plugged in are dark-grey. If a connection has already been assigned to
another line, it is identified with a light-grey icon and does not have a check box. This allows you to instantly
identify the status of all the connectors on a card.

2.2.2.2.4
ISDN Connection (external/internal)
When configuring ISDN lines, the first step is to distinguish between external and internal connections. The
external connection is the “typical” method of connecting to the telephone network, and the internal
connection is used for ISDN fax devices, ISDN telephones, or connection to an existing telephone system.
Note: To assign multiple connectors on an ISDN card to the same line/number range, click
each connector individually.

Important: After the ISDN configuration is changed, the telephony subsystem must be restarted. This
will terminate all calls in progress!
2.2.2.2.5
GSM Adapter
Each SIM card can be assigned exactly one line of the GSM adapter. The line is activated by selecting its
check box. In the case of dual or quad GSM cards, a separate SIM card is needed for each line to be used.
Once you have entered the PIN of the SIM card, enter the cellular number as an individual DN in the
“Number Area” tab and save it.
Important: If you enter and save an incorrect PIN three times, the card will be blocked. You must
have the PUK (Personal Unlocking Key) supplied by the provider to unlock the card.
30

2.2.2.2.6
Number Area
Number Area for providers: In this field, select the format that providers will use to transmit Dial numbers to
STARFACE. This field does not affect calls originating from the server.
The options in “Connection” for ISDN cards: Device Connection defines a DN range consisting of a base
number and a block of usually two-digit DDI numbers. Multi-device Connection consists of single DNs (called
multiple or MSN numbers, see examples below).
Important: The connection setting is crucial for call setup as well as for the functioning of the ISDN
line. Please refer to your ISDN provider documentation to determine the correct connection type!
You can enter your DNs either as Single Number or as a Number Block i.e., multiple MSN numbers can also
be entered as a block with base number plus DDI numbers. Of course, this is only practical if the DNs are
31
STARFACE ©2007 by vertico software GmbH
Manual - for STARFACE Version 2.0
sequential. Thus, the differentiation between Single Number and Number Block merely suits the purpose of
the comfortable entry of dial numbers and is not depending on your connection type.
Examples:
Device Connection: Your provider has assigned DNs 23453245-0 through 23453245-99 to you. Enter
23453245 as the base number and then 0 to 99 as the DN range.
Multi-device Connection: You have individual DNs 2345-11, 2345-12, 2345-13, and 2345-14. Because the
numbers are sequential, you can choose to enter them as a DN block. Enter base number 2345 and DN
range 11 to 14.
Multi-device Connection: You have individual DNs 2345-11, 2345-13, and 2345-15. Because the numbers
are not sequential, you should select the individual DN entry and add each number by clicking the
icon to
the right.
2.2.2.2.7
Advanced Settings
On this page, you can make changes to the general settings for individual lines.
If multiple lines have been configured, use the “Line Prefix” field to define a prefix that will allow calls to be
set up directly via a specific line. Please note that you should use only single digits as a prefix. The
characters preceding and following the prefix **_ * must also be entered during dialing.
For every line, an internal DN can be defined as an alternative deposit for unanswered calls. If “Default“ is
selected, the general settings are used.
In the case of provider lines, the maximum number of calls per line should be entered manually in the “Max
Connection” field. This is dependent on your provider/contract. The predefined value of 0 sets the limit to
“unlimited”!
Important: After changing the ISDN configuration, you must restart the telephony subsystem. This will
terminate all calls in progress!

2.2.3
Step 3: Configure the STARFACE Users
2.2.3.1 The STARFACE User Concept
A distinction is made between two types of logins to the STARFACE system:
•
User login via the web interface using a login ID and password. This user can register/unregister on
various telephones ( *77 ), can be assigned telephones and DNs, and can be a member of one or more
groups.
•
Login of a telephone or software telephone (more precisely: one or more lines on a telephone) on the
system (called a SIP account).
The second type of login is of internal significance only and is not of interest to users.
Users can register themselves on a telephone via the keypad:
*
7
7
+ <user ID>
to register the user on this telephone
*
7
8
+ <user ID>
to unregister the user from this telephone
*
7
9
to unregister all users from this telephone
Note: If a user unregisters from a telephone with *
7
no longer assigned to that user until he registers again with
8
*
+ <user ID>, the telephone is
7
7
+ <user ID>, or
until an administrator assigns the device to the user again in STARFACE.
The telephone “belongs” to the first user registered on the phone; i.e., for outgoing calls, that user’s DN is
signaled and the call is allocated to him.
A user is identified in the STARFACE system by the following attributes:
•
Login ID
•
Password
•
First Name
•
Last Name
•
E-mail Address
33

Manual - for STARFACE Version 2.0
2.2.3.2 Create Users
Login IDs must be unique. In other words, two users cannot have the same login ID. The login ID should
consist of at least 4 characters. Only the digits 0 through 9 may be used, as the user must be able to log in
via the telephone keypad!
Note: The automatic field completion function available in most web browsers should always be
deactivated, because otherwise the password field for new users will automatically be predefined with
a previously used password.
The password must be at least 6 characters in length. All lower-case and upper-case letters of the German
alphabet, including the umlauted characters, as well as the digits 0 through 9, hyphen, underscore, period,
pound (#) and asterisk, may be used. The secure password rules as defined for the root password (refer to
2.1.2.7 Entering the root Password) also apply here.
The login ID and password are automatically e-mailed to the user. Therefore, the e-mail address entered for
the user should be a valid one. Save the user account and the Initial Configuration is complete.
2.2.4
Complete the Initial Configuration
After initial configuration is successfully completed the login dialog is opened by which you get access to the
main menu with your user ID and password. You can make detailed settings in the configuration area of
STARFACE like creating accounts for users and groups, configuring additional lines and telephones etc..
You can get to the configuration area by clicking

Defining Redirecting Rules
Use this tab to define forwarding rules for the DNs assigned to this user. These redirection rules can be
always active, or they can be triggered if the number is busy or the call is not answered after a defined time
period.
To activate forwarding for a DN, select the check box to the left of the DN. Type in a forwarding destination.
This may be any number, including external or cellular numbers. If the user has a voicemail box, it can also
be used as a destination. Forwarding rules for a group DN can be defined only on the “Always” tab. If no
forwarding rules are defined in the “Timeout” tab, unanswered calls are forwarded to the attendant after 30
seconds. The DN of the attendant is defined in the general line configuration or in an individual line’s
configuration (refer to 2.2.2 Step 2: Configure Lines and 2.2.2.2.7 Advanced Settings).

Assigning Telephones
Click
or
to select an available telephone. Once the telephone is selected, all DNs for
this user are available on this device.
The “Primary Phone” setting is defined as follows when multiple devices are assigned:
•
The primary telephone setting defines which device is displayed as available/unavailable/busy on the
function keys of other users. This means that if the user is placing a call on another device, the user’s
busy status will not be visible to other users in the system (for more information on function keys, refer to
5.6 Function Keys).
•
The Call Manager sets up calls on the primary telephone as a default.
Use the device list to activate or deactivate the individual DNs for a device. As an example, one telephone
might be available only for internal calls and a second telephone only for external calls. This restricted
availability is indicated with the icon.
Important: The name „IAX2/...“ indicates a Plugin-Phone integrated in STARFACE. This has to be
activated by each user, even though the setting here says „Active“ . This activation only refers to the
use of the selected call numbers with this phone. For activation of the Plugin-Phone, please refer to
5.8.5 Plugin-Phone.

use it. The new DN is automatically activated for all telephones assigned to the user.
If a user is assigned multiple external DNs, use the menu to the left to select the DN to be displayed to the
other party. As a default, the number display is suppressed; i.e., the other party is identified in the display as
“anonymous”.
Note: Users can also make/change this setting in their preferences.
If a user has multiple internal DNs, the primary DN defined at the top of the page determines which number
is used by the function keys. The function keys display the call status for this number and are used for call
setup. For more information, refer to 5.6 Function Keys.
The settings of each DN can be modified by selecting the “Default Rule”.
38
STARFACE ©2007 by vertico software GmbH
Manual - for STARFACE Version 2.0
The options are defined as follows:
Call-Through Function / Call via STARFACE: The number is used to forward calls from outside the network.
So, for example, it is possible to dial this number from a cell phone, then enter the desired destination
number (fixed or cellular network) and have the call connected. This means that only the connection costs to
STARFACE are charged to the cell phone, and not to the destination number in the fixed network or another
cellular network.
Call back also makes use of forwarding: The caller dials the DN but the call is not completed. Instead,
STARFACE calls back immediately, after which the caller enters the desired destination number. This means
there are no costs for the caller because the original call was not answered, but rather simply “registered”.
Call back internal is the callback function for forwarding to internal DNs.
Conference Room permanently reserves a DN as a virtual conference room. This option is independent of
the scheduled conferences feature (refer to 5.7 Phone Conferences). The conferences held via this DN
cannot be moderated or followed in the web browser like normal conferences.
Important: By changing the default rules to one of the four options described above, the number is no
longer available to the user because it is no longer a “normal” DN.

Example: To receive customer service calls for hardware products, a group “Support Hardware” is created.
This group is assigned external extension number –76. On the company website, this number is listed as the
customer service number for hardware service. Calls to this number are sent to all telephones/softphones
registered as members of this group. Any one of these users can answer the call.
Important: In contrast to a user’s individual password, group members need a “passcode” consisting
of the digits 0-9.
3.3.1
Editing Group Settings
Groups are administered in almost the same way as users. Like users, groups have DNs (refer to 3.2.4

all group members who are currently logged in, you can also choose to have the telephones ring in a “call
hunting group” pattern, in which the telephones ring one after another until the call is answered.
The availability of group members can be set by selecting or clearing the “Angemeldet“ (registered) check

Basic Settings for Virtual Conference Rooms
Before the moderated conference function can be used, several basic settings must be made.
First, define the DNs that invited participants will use to join the conference. During individual conference
scheduling from the main menu, PIN codes are generated automatically for invitees. This PIN code will be
required to join the conference.
The web server address is an IP address that is inserted into the invitation e-mail as a web link. Participants
use this address to follow the conference in their web browser. Refer to 5.7 Phone Conferences .
The predefined invitation text is a general template and can be customized later for individual conferences.
Variables can also be used to generate invitation e-mails automatically. When the e-mail is sent, these
variables are dynamically replaced with values such as PIN, call-in number, date, time, and so on.

3.6.1
Configure the Address Book
LDAP Server and Folder Configuration
Instead of creating a new address directory in STARFACE, you can link to existing directories on an LDAP
server.
To do this, you need the IP address of the server, a valid user name and password, as well as the base
directory of the LDAP server to be accessed. The format of these values must match the LDAP syntax. Once
a link to the server exists, you can use the lower half of the page (folder configuration) to select the
directories to be displayed in the STARFACE address book. In the left-hand column, you assign the names
to these directories that will be used from that point on in the address book view.
Important: If write access is allowed for a directory, then users will be able to edit and delete contact
entries in that directory!
Note: To use the LDAP address book, you must also make some view settings in the “Layout” tab.
3.6.2
Layout
Two designs are available for the layout. You can choose the LDAP view or the MS Active Directory 2003
view. Depending on the view you choose, you can make some customized settings.
3.6.2.1 Order of LDAP Fields
Define the entries users will see in the opened address book. Column 4 is reserved for telephone numbers.
STARFACE uses the numbers defined here to get the names—that is, to assign names to DNs. If one of
these fields is removed from the view (for example, “mobile”), the associated name cannot be displayed in
the call lists or in the Call Manager.
3.6.2.2 Definition of LDAP Fields
On this page, define the blocks of fields that will be seen in the detailed view. All detailed entries added here
will be visible to users in the “index card” view and (if write access was allowed) will be editable by users.

Create Voicemail Box
This page displays all previously created voicemail boxes. Use this page to sort, search, list alphabetically,
and so on. You can also create new voicemail boxes, delete them, or edit them.
When you edit a voicemail box, you can add or remove users and user groups, as well as set up, edit, or
listen to greetings. Greetings created here are saved as system-wide greetings; i.e., they are visible and
available to all users, and they can also be edited by any user with administrator rights. Personal greetings
should always be set up in the user’s individual settings (refer to 5.8.3 Voicemail).
If voicemail was already set up when the user or group account was created, then the user or group account
names will already be assigned to the appropriate voicemail box.

Define Routing Rules
STARFACE allows you to set up “Least Cost Routing” (LCR).
Every least-cost route has a unique DN range. For every outgoing call, a search is made for an appropriate
LCR rule. The rule whose DN range comes as close as possible to the dialed DN is selected. For example,
two separate LCR rules might be defined for the DN ranges 0123 and 01234. A user initiates an outgoing
call to DN 0123456. In this case, the dialing rule for DN range 01234 is selected because it has more
matching digits than the rule for DN range 0123.
Note: If DN suppression is selected in the user’s preferences, the user’s DN is always suppressed
regardless of the settings made here.
Figure: If the DN defined as the display number in a user’s preferences is always to be displayed to the
called party for outgoing calls, then the priority must be set to “Line”. An attempt is then made to use the line
associated with this DN. If this is not possible - e.g., if the line is not available - the LCR is used but the DN
display is suppressed. If the “LCR” option is selected, the DN of the line currently being routed is sent. In this
case, the displayed DN changes depending on the routing and the line used. This behavior could
47
STARFACE ©2007 by vertico software GmbH
Manual - for STARFACE Version 2.0
theoretically be suppressed by selecting “No Screening” in the advanced line configuration, but that feature
is currently supported by only a very few providers.
Every LCR rule has defined time periods during which it is valid. For a dialing rule, you can define zero, one
or multiple time periods. The only requirement is that time periods may not overlap. If you attempt to create a
dialing rule with overlapping time periods, you will receive an error message and the affected lines will be
highlighted.
For each time period, you can define zero, one, or multiple outbound lines. Lines are listed in order of
priority; i.e., the first line is used for the first attempt to set up a call, then the second line, and so on until all
lines have been tried. If the call fails on all defined lines, then all available system lines are tried to set up the
call.
The “Pre-Preselection” (Call-By-Call) field can be defined for every outbound line. This number is prefixed to
the actual DN. For example, the number 01234567 is dialed. This number is prefixed with 01019, so that
STARFACE actually dials 0101901234567.
Important: Call-By-Call numbers set up calls via the providers who make these numbers available.
You will be responsible for their telephone tariffs, and not those of the provider of the line used by the
routing.
Example: This LCR rule is used for international calls (in Germany by prefixing the DN with 00).

3.10 Configure the Server
Use the server page to manage all STARFACE services. These include network settings for the DNS server,
NTP, and mail and web server. It also provides the data backup and restore function as well as the software
update function.
On this page you can restart individual services or the entire server.
Note! After a restart, users must log into the system again.

NTP and the Time
NTP (Network Time Protocol) is used to synchronize the system time of a computer with an NTP server. This
server can keep the time for the computer with an accuracy of between 10 ms and 20μs, depending on
whether it is located within or outside of the local network. The NTP server field lists available NTP servers
on the Internet. Alternatively, you can enter a different server address, or you can define the time manually. If
you define the time manually, the system clock on the server will maintain the date/time information.
If you make NTP available for the network segment, STARFACE becomes an NTP server from which the
telephones and client computers connected to this segment pull their system time. However, this option must
also be selected on the individual computers.
Caution: After the time settings are changed, the web server will restart!

SIP Settings
SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is an open network protocol standard for call setup between two or more
SIP-ready VoIP devices. An important attribute of SIP is the use of RTP (Realtime Transport Protocol). RTP
“packs” the audio and video data of the call and sends it via UDP (User Datagram Protocol). Because the
ports are assigned dynamically for UDP, routers that use NAT cannot allocate the ports to the appropriate
data packs. If the server is in a network that uses NAT (e.g., via a router), you might need to select the check
box for NAT.
NAT (Network Address Translation) “masks” the individual internal IP addresses “outside” the system
(toward the Internet) by replacing them with one or more public IP addresses. Often, “masquerading” (PAT,
NAPT) is also used, which additionally replaces the port numbers of a data transmission. The settings for
NAT must be taken into account if the STARFACE server is connected via a provider line or if external
telephones are connected (refer also to the advanced line configuration in Section 2.2.1.2.1 Advanced
Configuration).
Important: To operate external devices, the following ports must be opened in the firewall: 5060 UDP
(for SIP), 4569 UDP (for IAX), and 10000-20000 UDP (for RTP).
The interaction between STARFACE and NAT is strongly dependent on the network architecture. Therefore,
these settings should not be changed once the system (or more accurately, telephony) is functioning
correctly. On the other hand, it is possible that if connections are not functioning correctly, the cause could lie
in the interaction among firewalls, routers, and the server.
You can find a more detailed discussion of NAT and its various forms, as well as the complex
interdependencies, at http://www.asteriskguru.com.
The field „External adress“ is especially important: Both the server for Instant Messaging and the
STARFACE WinClient depend on this entry. Click the corresponding button on the right to use the
automatically detected IP address. Alternatively, you may enter the domain name of your STARFACE
server. In case STARFACE is behind a NAT and consequential problems occur the „STUN“ field might be
helpful.
STUN (Simple Traversal of UDP over NATs ) is also a network protocol. Via STUN, the external IP address
of the server can get detected. To do so, fill in the address of a free STUN server, e.g.
stun.sipgate.net. For a list of further STUN servers refert to http://www.voip-info.org/wiki-STUN.

Network Settings
The function of DNS servers (Domain Name Service) is to resolve URLs into IP addresses; for example,
www.starface.de resolves to 85.214.20.166. Simply put, this principle is analogous to the relationship
between telephone numbers and names in the telephone book. The server addresses defined during
installation are entered here and are automatically updated.
3.10.3.3
Network Adapter
Please note that after changing the IP address of the network card, STARFACE must be opened again by
typing the new IP address in the web browser, as the server will no longer be available under the old IP
address. It is therefore recommended that the setting “Protocol“ be set to static so that the server can always
be reached at the defined address (as long as this address is not assigned differently by the DHCP server).

Setting Up the Mail Server
STARFACE uses an integrated mail server to send system messages (e.g., changes made to user data by
administrators) and voicemails to users via e-mail. If you wish to use an external mail server for this purpose,
the login and connection data are entered here. Details such as the name of the SMTP server can be
obtained from the provider.
3.10.5
Configuring the Web Server
HTTPS (HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure) is a network protocol for encoded data transfer via SSL/TLS.
It offers:
•
Data privacy (data cannot be seen by third parties)
•
Data integrity (data cannot be manipulated)
•
Authentication (the knowledge that you are connected with the server you want to be connected to)
If HTTPS is activated, all HTTP queries can be diverted to HTTPS.
To use HTTPS, you must create a certificate for the web server. A provisional certificate is already stored in
STARFACE.
3.10.5.1
Click
required:
Creating a Server Certificate
to open the page where you will create the certificate. The following fields are
1. The server name. This is the domain that the certificate will apply to.
2. The number of days that the certificate will be valid.
The domain name must be complete; for example, www.yourcompany.net (without "http://"). A
certificate is not valid for any subdomains, so each and every domain or subdomain requires its own
certificate.
For a server certificate to have any value, it should be signed by a Certificate Authority (CA). You can find a
selection of CAs in your browser settings (in Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options -> Content; in
54

3.10.6
Backup and Restore
Every 24 hours, STARFACE automatically generates a data backup of the user, group, and configuration
settings, as well as all call lists, voicemails, and greetings. The backup can be saved either directly on the
server or to an external USB storage medium/SD card that is connected to the server. These must be
formatted with the file system FAT32, VFAT, or ext2. The data is saved to the automatically generated
directory “starface-backup“.
The previous seven backup files are saved; in other words, data from the last seven days are available.
Naturally, with this amount of data, it is possible to exceed the available storage space on external data
carriers. In this case, the previous backups are overwritten, oldest to newest.
If you want to make your own backup files at other storage locations, follow the instructions here to complete
the backup via the web interface.
3.10.6.1
Creating the Backup
In addition to storage on the server, you can select any of several options for saving the backup file. For
example, the file can be attached to an e-mail and sent to an address you define. It is also possible to
download the backup to the hard drive of a client computer.
55

Manual - for STARFACE Version 2.0
A minimum data backup consists of the core data, including users, groups, and settings. In addition, received
voice messages, recorded announcements, and the call detail record (CDR) can also be saved.
The CDR is the data record of all communications and can be used for billing. It includes information about
telephone calls, including the subscribers involved, time of call, call duration, and so on.

If the backup file includes greetings, voicemails, and call detail record (CDR) in addition to the core data, use
this page to specify whether these data records are also to be restored. The CDR is the data record of all
communications and can be used for billing. It includes information about telephone calls.
Important: When restoring the data records, the existing and the newer data is not compared. That
means that greetings recorded after the backup file was created are deleted during the restore
process and are no longer available.
The option “Ignore IP “ is of significance if the backup is to be imported from another STARFACE server. In
this case, this option MUST be selected.

Because the restore process will terminate all of these processes, you must decide at this point whether to
continue with the restore process or cancel it.
3.10.7
Viewing Log Files
The STARFACE interface maintains two separate log files, the log file for the telephony server (PBX log file)
and the log file for the web server (application log file).
In the application log file, you can define what data will be logged by setting the log level. The log levels are
organized hierarchically in the menu. This means that each higher level includes the data from all lower
levels. For example, if the “warn” level is selected, then all entries from the “error” level as well as from the
“fatal” level will be saved and displayed. A change to the log level must be saved and confirmed before the
view can be updated. However, a change in log level affects only future logging; the existing entries remain
in the file as well as in the display.

3.12 Advanced Settings
This editor is used to create your own dial plan extensions or macros. Simply put, the dial plan is the entire
set of rules and routines defined for handling all VoIP connections.
In the first field, you can define global variables that are then available when defining macros in the lower
input field. The syntax is kept intentionally simple: Enter each variable and its value in a separate line in the
format variablename=value. However, predefined variables are not absolutely necessary when defining
macros, so this field can also remain empty.
Sample Macro Definition:
This is an extension that allows incoming faxes to be forwarded as e-mails. You will also require the shell
script “fax2mail”, written by Michelle Dupuis and available for download (along with its companion
“mail2fax”) on the Internet at www.generationd.com. The script is called in the final line of code with the
command System().
Code:
[[macro-fax2mail3]]; {fax2mail3}
exten => s,1,Goto(fax,1)
exten => fax,1,SetVar(FAXFILE=/var/spool/asterisk/fax/${CALLERIDNUM}.tif)
exten => fax,n,SetVar(FAXFILENOEXT=/var/spool/asterisk/fax/${CALLERIDNUM})
exten => fax,n,rxfax(${FAXFILE})

The User Interface
4.1
Introduction
The user interface provides an easily learned, quick access to the entire system functionality. It is optimized
for Microsoft® Internet Explorer starting with Version 5.5 as well as for Mozilla Firefox starting with Version
1.5.
STARFACE consists of three core interfaces: The Main Window for all functions not directly related to a
telephone call, the Call Manager, which visually displays and allows access to all functions directly related to
telephone calls, and an Administrations Window for easy configuration of the STARFACE system.
There are also separate windows for help topics that can be reached at any time with the icon. These
information pages are not located directly within STARFACE, but rather are loaded from the Internet; i.e.,
they are available only if a connection exists to the Internet. The help pages grow with the development of
the software and often offer more up-to-date information than a manual can.

Redirect Calls
The call forwarding function forwards calls to a different telephone number or to a voicemail box. Click the
“Umleitung” (forwarding) button in the menu to open the corresponding window. This window contains all
telephone numbers assigned to the current user. The call forwarding rules activated here apply all the time,
not only when the user cannot be reached.
Note: The “Preferences“ window allows detailed forwarding rules to be defined for busy line or
unanswered calls (refer to 5.8.4 Redirect Calls).
In this example, the telephone number 12365426 is forwarded to the external number 01733771 and the
internal number 21 is redirected to voicemail box 21. Calls to the external number 12365436 are allowed
through.
The

group members, and the group can now be reached only via the forwarded number (in this example, via a
cell phone number).
Important: Call redirection rules are active only if the check box under “On / Off” is selected. This means that
you can predefine call forwarding rules and then activate or deactivate them as needed. Click

Groups
On this page, the user can see all group assignments and can also unregister from groups by clearing the
appropriate check box (after being assigned to a group by an administrator, the user is always automatically
registered with the group). However, unregistering from a group does not mean that the user is removed
from the group, but rather is more of a temporary logout; for example, if the user cannot or does not want to
answer calls for the group for a period of time.

5.8.2
Telephones
The following applies for the “Primary Phone“ if multiple devices are assigned:
•
The selection of the primary telephone defines which device will be displayed in the function keys of
other users as available/unavailable/busy. If a call is in progress on another device, this busy status will
not be visible to the other users in the system (for detailed information on function keys, refer to 5.6
Function Keys).
•
As a default, the Call Manager places calls via the primary telephone.
Use the device list to activate or deactivate the individual DNs for a device. As an example, one telephone
might be available only for internal calls and a second telephone only for external calls. This restricted
availability is indicated with the icon.
The “Call Waiting” function informs the user if another call is received during a call. The user can then decide
whether to accept the call, place the call on hold, or call the caller back later.
Important: The device name “IAX2/...” identifies a Plugin-Phone integrated into STARFACE. This
must be activated by every user individually, even if “active“ is set here. Activation here means only
that the selected DN will be used on this device. It means that the device (if it is being used) will
respond to calls for this DN. Refer to 5.8.5 Plugin-Phone for information on activating the PluginPhone.

Voicemail
This page lists all voicemail boxes assigned to the current user either directly or indirectly via a user group.
There are two types of entries:
•
User mailbox with full configuration rights.
•
Group mailbox with limited configuration rights.
Group mailboxes are identified with the icon
.
Voicemail boxes can be assigned multiple names in the system. A name is assigned by the administrator or
the system when the mailbox is created. Every assigned user can also assign a name to the voicemail box.
The user-defined name for a voicemail box is used throughout the user’s profile. If “Send by E-Mail“ is
selected, new voice messages are sent as attachments in an e-mail. By entering the number of a voicemail
box (
in the example) on the telephone keypad, voice messages can also be heard directly on the
telephone.
The user can select, record, listen to, or edit the greetings for the various user mailboxes. However, the
following restrictions apply:
86
STARFACE ©2007 by vertico software GmbH
Manual - for STARFACE Version 2.0
•
Only greetings created by the user can be deleted or edited. System-wide greetings created by an
administrator are write-protected and can only be listened to.
•
Only individual user mailboxes may be password-protected by the user. Passcodes for group voicemail
boxes are assigned by the administrator (refer to 3.7 Create Voicemail Box).
•
In the case of group boxes, only the name of the box displayed to the current user may be edited.

Note: Calls to group DNs can be set only for “Always” forwarding.
5.8.5
Plugin-Phone
The Plugin-Phone is the browser-based variant of a softphone. While softphones are proprietary software
applications that must be additionally installed on each client computer, the Plugin-Phone is integrated into
the Call Manager. It uses platform-independent web technologies and requires only the audio component of
the client computer. This means that an external hard or softphone is not required for placing calls via
STARFACE. All calls can be handled with a headset/loudspeaker and the Call Manager.
Every user account is automatically assigned a Plugin-Phone (the device name always starts with “IAX2/...“).
However, the user is responsible for activating and using the Plugin-Phone. The functioning of the PluginPhone is dependent on the audio hardware (sound card) installed on the computer. If the user accesses
STARFACE from several different work places, the input/output device options will vary.
87
STARFACE ©2007 by vertico software GmbH
Manual - for STARFACE Version 2.0
Once the Plugin-Phone is activated by selecting the appropriate check box, all phone calls can be handled
via a headset connected to the input/output of the sound card. The Plugin-Phone can be used as the only
telephone or in addition to other telephones (even as the primary telephone).
Note: To use the Plugin-Phone, Java must be allowed in the browser.
5.8.6
Add-Ons
Depending on the software installed on the client computers, various add-ons to the standard installation are
offered: The STARFACE Dialer for Mozilla Firefox, the STARFACE WinClient for MS Windows
(Windows2000/SP3 and higher), and the “Address Book” plug-in for Apple/Mac.
5.8.6.1 STARFACE Dialer for Mozilla Firefox
This add-on allows users to click a telephone number on any Internet page and place a call to that number.
After the add-on is installed and Firefox has been restarted, open “Tools“, then click “Configure STARFACE
Dialer“. In the dialog box, enter the IP address of the STARFACE server, your login ID and password.
The add-on is displayed with the STARFACE telephone handset symbol in the Firefox status bar (bottom
right).
Using the STARFACE Dialer: Select a telephone number with the mouse and then right-click the number to
open the context menu. Click the option “Starface: <Number> waehlen“ (dial <number>) to place the call.
If you left-click the telephone handset icon, all telephone numbers found on the web page are highlighted in
yellow. You can then click any of the highlighted numbers to have STARFACE place the call.

5.8.6.2 STARFACE WinClient / TAPI Driver
TAPI (Telephony Application Programming Interface ) is a software interface for supporting telephony
services on computers (Computer Telephony Integration / CTI) for the Windows operating system.
Computers can use the STARFACE WinClient to control functions such as call setup, forwarding, etc., via
the TAPI interface. To set up calls, the STARFACE WinClient can be started directly from the taskbar, or it
can be integrated into an application like MS Outlook in order to use telephony services directly in the
application.
Save the file STARFACE-WinClient-TSP-Setup.exe on the local computer and open it. The installation
starts. Follow the dialogue of the installation routine. Depending on your MS Windows (minimum Windows
2000 with Service Pack 3) an update of the WinInstaller and/or the additional installation of „.NET“Framework 2.0 is required. You only need to confirm these steps and the latest versions of these
components will automatically be installed.
After the WinClient has been successfully installed, start it by double-clicking the desktop icon. The
STARFACE icon appears as an active application in the notification area of the toolbar on the Windows
desktop.
1. Right-click the icon to open the context menu, then select “Settings“.
2. Copy the settings from the figure above. Exceptions are server address and network host. Put in here the
entry of the field “External address” from your server settings. Please refer to 3.10.3.1 SIP Settings.

5. You can now enter a DN using the “Quick dial“
option (confirm with the Enter key) and the call is

interface to use the WinClient.
5.8.6.3 Address Book Plug-In for Mac
Copy both downloaded files (application and configuration) to
the folder “Address Book Plug-Ins“ of the Mac address book
(if this folder is not present, you must create it!). Restart the
address book and the plug-in is ready for use.
Click a contact’s number to open the context menu with the STARFACE dial option, then click this option to
make the call.

Instant Messaging with the Jabber Server
Your STARFACE system has an Instant Messaging server integrated as an additional feature. This server
allows network-internal, written communication (“chat”) in real-time. The name of the server software is
Wildfire, a free product from Jive Software, and uses the Jabber protocol. This server program is
automatically started with STARFACE and accesses its user accounts. Thus, every user is registered with
both servers with the same login data.
However, individual users require an IM client program on their local computers. A free, proven software is
the “PSI Jabber Client“, which is available for download at psi-im.org.
Note: When creating a user account, rights must be explicitly given for Instant Messaging, even if the
user is configured as an administrator.
91

7.1
Troubleshooting
I received a hardware error message at the start of the installation.
Does not apply to STARFACE APPLIANCE
In rare cases, a hardware error message can occur during installation from CD-ROM the first time “Enter“ is
pressed to confirm the installation step. This error is not caused by the STARFACE software, but rather is a
result of the boot loader of the Linux distribution being used. We assume that this error will be cleared in
future versions of the operating system.
If this error does occur, restart the computer and before you press “Enter” to confirm the first installation step,
enter a random character (it does not matter which one) after “boot:” and then confirm twice. The installation
process should then start without problem. We recommend that you do this the first time you try to install to
prevent the error from happening in the first place.
7.2
My ISDN card was not recognized.
If an installed ISDN card is not recognized by STARFACE, send an email to
mailto:[email protected] with the following information:
•
Name of the card
•
Manufacturer
•
Card specifications. To find this information, log onto the server as root and type in the command lspci
to output the detailed information.
•
Loaded kernel modules. Type in the command lsmod to output a list of loaded modules.
My phone echoes during telephone calls.
The cause of noisy echoes during telephone calls lies in the conversion of digital signals to analog, or in the
wiring of analog devices where two-wire subscriber lines are converted to four-wire telephone lines. While
STARFACE and VoIP telephones implement echo compensation to prevent the echo, it is not possible to
resolve the problem on analog devices because of the wiring. Echo can be minimized by not allowing
acoustic feedback. This can occur, for example, when the voice of the other subscriber echoes from the
headset or telephone loudspeaker into the microphone and the user hears his or her own voice as an echo.
To prevent this, the headset or telephone loudspeaker should be set at a lower volume.
