Do not use solvents such as benzene, thinner, commercially available cleaners, or anti-static sprays intended for discs. Since the optical unit (laser) of the DVD system operates at a higher power than regular DVD or CD players, cleaning CDs intended for DVD or CD players may damage the optical unit (laser). Therefore, refrain from using a cleaning CD. Setup Finding a suitable location – Place the set on a flat, hard and stable surface. Do not place the set on a carpet. – Do not position the set on top of other equipment that might heat it up (e.g., receiver or amplifier). – Do not put anything under the set (e.g., CDs, magazines). – Install this system near the AC outlet and where the AC power plug can be reached easily. Space for ventilation – Place the apparatus in a location with adequate ventilation to prevent internal heat build up. Helpful Hints: – Ensure that the speaker cables are correctly connected. Helpful Hints: – To hear the TV channels through this DVD system, use the audio cables (white/red - not supplied) to connect AUDIO-TV IN sockets to the corresponding AUDIO OUT sockets on the TV. Option 1: Using S-Video socket ● Use an S-video cable (not supplied) to connect the DVD system’s S-VIDEO socket to the S-Video input socket (or labelled as Y/C or S-VHS) on the TV. The progressive scan video quality is only possible when using Y Pb Pr and a progressive scan TV is required. Option 3: Using Component (Y Pb Pr) Video jack 1 Use the component video cables (red/ blue / green - not supplied) to connect the DVD system’s Y Pb Pr jacks to the corresponding component video input jacks (or labeled as Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr or YUV) on the TV. 1 Connect the supplied MW loop antenna to the MW jack. Place the MW loop antenna on a shelf, or attach it to a stand or wall. 2 Connect the supplied FM antenna to the FM jack. Extend the FM antenna and fix its ends to the wall. For better FM stereo reception, connect an external FM antenna (not supplied). 2 To hear the TV channels through this DVD system, use the audio cables (white/ red - supplied) to connect the DVD system’s TV IN jacks to the audio input jacks on the TV. 3 Proceed to page 20 for detailed Progressive Scan set up. The ECO POWER LED on the DVD system and AV Subwoofer LED will light up. Never make or change any connections with the power switched on. Press SOURCE to select “AUX/ ANALOG” in order to activate the input source. Using the VCR for recording DVD playback Some DVDs are copy-protected. You cannot record or dub protected discs using a VCR. 3 Connect the DVD system’s S-VIDEO jack to the S-VIDEO IN jack on the VCR. 4 Connect the DVD system’s LINE OUT (R/L) jacks to the AUDIO IN jacks on the VCR. This will allow you to make analog stereo (two channel, right and left) recordings. Before recording, set the volume level of the DVD system to level 1 and below, in order to enable sound output from the LINE OUT sockets. Press SOURCE to select “AUX/ DIGITAL” in order to activate the input source. VOL – Adjusts the volume level. 18 3139 246 16473 Getting Started 3 Step 2: Setting the TV English Step 1: Inserting batteries into the remote control IMPORTANT! Make sure you have completed all the necessary connections. (See page 11-12 “Connecting to TV”) 1 2 1 Press SOURCE control until “DVD/CD” appears on the display panel. 1 Open the battery compartment. 2 Insert two batteries type R06 or AA, following the indications (+-) inside the compartment. 3 Close the cover. 2 Turn on the TV and set it to the correct video-in channel. You should see the blue DVD background screen on the TV. ➜ Or, the TV remote control may have a button or switch that chooses between different video modes. ➜ Or, set the TV to channel 3 or 4 if you are using an RF modulator. CAUTION! – Remove batteries if they are exhausted or if the remote control is not to be used for a long time. – Do not use old and new, or different types of batteries in combination. – Batteries contain hazardous chemical substances, so they should be disposed of properly. Using the remote control to operate the system 1 Aim the remote control directly at the remote sensor (iR) on the front panel. 2 Select the source you wish to control by pressing one of the source select buttons on the remote control (for example TV, TUNER.) 3 Then select the desired function (for example É, S, T.) 19 3139 246 16473 Getting Started (continued) English Setting up Progressive Scan feature (for Progressive Scan TV only) The progressive scan display twice the number of frames per seconds than interlaced scanning (ordinary normal TV system.) With nearly double the number of lines, progressive scan offers higher picture resolution and quality. 7 Press 1 to highlight There will be no picture on your TV at this state until you turn on the progressive scan mode on your TV. 8 Turn on your TV progressive scan mode (refer to your TV user manual.) ➜ The below menu will appear on the TV. IMPORTANT! To cancel the resume mode ● In stop mode, press Ç again. Zooming in This function allows you to enlarge the picture on the TV screen and to pan through the enlarged picture. 1 During playback, press ZOOM repeatedly to select a different zoom factor. ➜ Use 1 2 3 4 keys to move through the zoomed image. ➜ Playback will continue. ● Press SUBTITLE repeatedly to select different subtitle languages. Selecting a title (DVD only) Some DVDs may contain several titles. Subsequent access to a locked disc requires six-digit password. Restricting playback by Parental Control Some DVDs may have a parental level assigned to the complete disc or to certain scenes on the disc. This feature lets you set a playback limitation level. The rating levels are from 1 to 8 and are country dependent. You can prohibit the playing of certain discs that are not suitable for your children, or have certain discs played with alternative scenes. 1 In ‘Preference Page’, press 34 to highlight { Parental }, then press 2. DIVX SUBTITLE Audio, Subtitle, Disc Menu These menus contain various language options for audio, subtitle and disc menu that may be recorded on the DVD. For details, see page 22. Helpful Hints: – VCD, SVCD, CD have no level indication, so parental control has no effect on these type of discs.This also applies to most illegal DVDs. – Some DVDs are not encoded with a rating though the movie rating may be printed on the Disc cover. The rating level feature does not prohibit play of such Discs. TIPS: PBC You can set the PBC to ON or OFF. This feature is available only on Video CD 2.0 with playback control (PBC) feature. For details, see page 28. MP3/JPEG Menu - turning on/off MP3/JPEG Navigator can be set only if the disc is recorded with a menu. This is not a malfunction. Clean the disc. The aspect ratio of the screen cannot be changed even though you have set the TV display. – – The aspect ratio is fixed on the DVD disc. Depending on the TV, it may not be possible to change the aspect ratio. No sound or distorted sound. – – – Adjust the volume. Check the speaker connections and settings. Make sure that the audio cables are connected and press the SOURCE button to select the correct input source (TV or AUX/ DI, for example) to choose the equipment that you want to hear through the DVD system. Cannot activate some features such as Angles, Subtitles, or multi-language Audio. – – The features may not be available on the DVD. Depending on the disc availability, some menu items cannot be selected. Insert a readable disc with the playback side facing down. The DVD+R/CD-R must be finalized. Check the disc type, color system (PAL or NTSC) and region code. Check for any scratches or smudges on the disc. Press SETUP to turn off the setup menu screen. You may need to enter the password in order to change the parental control rating level or to unlock the disc for playback. Moisture may have condensed inside the system. Remove the disc and leave the system turned on for about an hour. Make sure the center and rear speakers are connected correctly. Press SURR button to select a correct surround sound setting. Make sure the source you are playing is recorded or broadcast in surround sound (DTS, Dolby Digital, etc.) If the signal is too weak, adjust the antenna or connect an external antenna for better reception. Increase the distance between the system and your TV or VCR. Tune in to the correct frequency. Place the antenna further away from any equipment that may be causing the interference. Select the source (DISC or TUNER, for example) before pressing the function button (É, S , T.) Reduce the distance between the remote control and the system. Replace the batteries with new ones. Point the remote control directly toward the IR sensor. Check that the batteries are loaded correctly. Unable to play DivX movies. – Check that the DivX file is encoded in ‘Home Theater’ mode with DivX 5.x encoder. The DVD system does not work. – Disconnect the power cord from the power outlet for a few minutes. Reconnect the power cord and try to operate again as usual. DivX 3.11/4.x/5.x: The DivX code is a patentpending, MPEG-4 based video compression technology, developed by DivXNetworks, Inc., that can shrink digital video to sizes small enough to be transported over the internet, while maintaining high visual quality. Dolby Digital: A surround sound system developed by Dolby Laboratories containing up to six channels of digital audio (front left and right, rear left and right, center and subwoofer). Dolby Surround Pro Logic II: It is an improved matrix decoding technology that provides better spatiality and directionality on Dolby Surround program material; provides a convincing threedimensional soundfield on convertional stereo music recordings; and is ideally suited to bring the surround experience to automotive sound. While conventional surround programming is fully campatible with Dolby Surround Pro Logic II decoders, soundtracks will be able to be encoded specifically to take full advantage of Pro Logic II playback, including separate left and right surround channels. Playback control (PBC): Refers to the signal recorded on video CDs or SVCDs for controlling playback.
