Read this manual carefully to learn how to operate
and maintain your product correctly. Reading this
manual will help you and others avoid personal injury
and damage to the product. Although Toro designs,
produces and markets safe, state-of-the-art products,
you are responsible for using the product properly
and safely. You are also responsible for training
persons who you allow to use the product about safe
operation.
The Toro warning system in this manual identifies
potential hazards and has special safety messages that
help you and others avoid personal injury, even death.
DANGER, WARNING and CAUTION are signal
words used to identify the level of hazard. However,
regardless of the hazard, be extremely careful.
DANGER signals an extreme hazard that will cause
serious injury or death if the recommended
precautions are not followed.
WARNING signals a hazard that may cause serious
injury or death 1f the recommended precautions are
not followed.
CAUTION signals a hazard that may cause minor or
moderate injury if the recommended precautions are
not followed.
Two other words are also used to highlight
information. “Important” calls attention to special
mechanical information and “Note” emphasizes
general information worthy of special attention.

Cover Plate and Guard Plate
Your mower was shipped with a cover plate and
guard plate. For side discharge operation the cover
plate must be installed in the deck opening and the
guard plate over the side discharge opening.
A\ WARNING
POTENTIAL HAZARD
e An uncovered discharge opening will allow
objects to be thrown in operator’s or
bystander’s direction. Also, contact with
blade could occur.

Before Starting
Oil Mix Ratio
Your Toro mower 1$ powered by a 2-cycle engine
which requires a 32:1 mixture of gasoline and oil.
Failure to use the right mixture will result in serious
engine damage. |
Toro Two-Cycle Oil is specially formulated to
provide superior lubrication, make starting easy and
prolong engine life. If Toro Two-Cycle Oil is not
available, mix two gallons of gasoline with 8 ounces
of another high grade two-cycle oil that the NMMA
or BIA-TCW certification printed on the label.
IMPORTANT: Never use automotive oil (i.e.
SAE 30, 10W30 etc.), two-cycle oil that is not
certified NMMA/BIA-TCW or the wrong mix
ratio because the engine can be damaged, and
it would not be covered by the Toro warranty.
4\ DANGER
POTENTIAL HAZARD
e In certain conditions gasoline is extremely
flammable and highly explosive.
WHAT CAN HAPPEN
e A fire or explosion from gasoline can burn
you, others, and cause property damage.
HOW TO AVOID THE HAZARD
e Use a funnel and fill the fuel tank outdoors,
in an open area, when the engine is cold.
Wipe up any gasoline that spills.
e Do not fill the fuel tank completely full.
Add gasoline to the fuel tank until the level
is 1/4” to 1/2” (6 mm to 13 mm) below the
bottom of the filler neck. This empty space
in the tank allows gasoline to expand.
e Never smoke when handling gasoline, and
stay away from an open flame or where
gasoline fumes may be ignited by a spark.
e Store gasoline in an approved container
and keep it out of the reach of children.
e Never buy more than a 30-day supply of
gasoline.
Mixing Gasoline And Oil
This engine is certified to operate on unleaded
gasoline. The Toro Company strongly recommends
the use of fresh, clean, UNLEADED regular grade
gasoline with an octane rating of 85 or higher in Toro
gasoline powered products. Unleaded gasoline burns
cleaner, extends engine life, and promotes good
starting by reducing the build-up of combustion
chamber deposits. In countries other than U.S.A,
leaded gasoline may be used if it 1s commercially
available and unleaded is unavailable.
For simplicity and best engine performance, mix 8
ounces of Toro Two—Cycle Oil with two gallons of
fresh, unleaded regular gasoline. Pour one gallon of
gasoline into an approved gasoline container and add
the correct amount of two-cycle oil. Install cap on
gasoline container and shake to mix oil and gasoline
thoroughly (Fig. 8). Slowly remove cap and add
remaining gasoline.
Note: Do not mix gasoline and oil in the
product fuel tank. Oil that is at room
temperature mixes easily and more
thoroughly than cold oil.
Note: NEVER USE METHANOL,
GASOLINE CONTAINING
METHANOL, GASOHOL
CONTAINING MORE THAN 10%
ETHANOL, PREMIUM GASOLINE
OR WHITE GAS BECAUSE
ENGINE FUEL SYSTEM COULD
BE DAMAGED.
1. Clean around fuel cap before removing (Fig. 9).
Fill fuel tank with gasoline/oil mix to bottom of
filler neck, not into filler neck. DO NOT
OVER-FILL TANK. Replace fuel cap securely
and wipe up any spilled fuel.
Toro recommends that Toro Stabilizer/Conditioner be
used regularly in all Toro gasoline powered products
during operation and storage seasons. Toro
Stabilizer/Conditioner cleans the engine during
operation and prevents gum-like varnish deposits
from forming in the engine during periods of storage.
Do not use fuel additives other than those
manufactured for fuel stabilization during storage
such as Toro’s Stabilizer/conditioner or a similar
product. Toro’s Stabilizer/conditioner is a
petroleum distillate based conditioner/stabilizer.
Toro does not recommend stabilizers with an
alcohol base such as ethanol, methanol or
isopropyl. Additives should not be used to try to
enhance the power or performance of the
machine.
2. Connect spark plug wire (1f disconnected)
(Fig. 4).
Lawn Preparation And Mowing
1. Review SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS and read
this manual carefully before operating mower.
2. Clear area of sticks, stones, wire, branches and
other debris which could be picked up or hit by
cutting blade and become thrown objects.
3. Keep everyone, especially children and pets,
away from area of operation.
4. Avoid striking trees, walls, curbs or other solid
objects. Never deliberately mow over any object.
5. If an object is struck, or mower starts to vibrate,

Note: Cable must be loose with bail in
released position or mower may creep
when bail 1s disengaged.
Self-propelled Drive Cleaning
(self~propelled models only)
Under certain conditions clippings can collect under
belt drive cover and in pulley groove. This could
cause belt slippage, loss of self-propelled drive or
failure to disengage self-propelled drive.
- Clean grass clippings and debris from under belt
cover every 25 hours of operation.
1. Remove screw and slide belt cover to rear,
unhooking tab on front of cover from deck
opening. Tilt cover up to the side and remove
debris (Fig. 29) from under cover and pulley
groove.
2. Reverse procedure to install belt cover.
Exhaust Ports
Carbon deposit build-up causes excessive wear and
loss of power. Check and clean if necessary.
1. Remove spark plug. See SPARK PLUG section.
2. Drain gasoline using a hand pump.

Rear Grass Catcher
ÁN WARNING 6.
POTENTIAL HAZARD
e An uncovered discharge opening will allow
objects to be thrown in operator’s or
bystander’s direction. Also, contact with
blade could occur.
WHAT CAN HAPPEN
e Thrown objects or blade contact can cause
serious injury.
HOW TO AVOID THE HAZARD
e Never operate mower unless cover plate or
grass chute and catcher are installed.
1. Stop engine and disconnect spark plug wire
(Fig. 4) before installing or removing grass
chute. | |
2. Remove screw that fastens cover plate to
housing (Fig. 5).
3. Two shoulder bolts on housing protrude through
10.
11.
slotted holes in cover plate and do not have to be
loosened or removed. Cover plate moves over
shoulder bolt heads (Fig. 6).
12.
Slide cover plate counterclockwise to remove.
Place front corner of chute baffle into deck
opening. Rotate chute counterclockwise and
push down into deck opening (Fig. 34 & 36).
Note: The chute baffle must go behind the
front deck baffle and between blade
and toe guard to prevent contact with
blade.
. Insert chute support rod through hole in right
side of deck (Fig. 35).
Two shoulder bolts on the mower housing
protrude through slotted holes in the chute
assembly and do not have to be loosened or
removed. Chute assembly moves over the
shoulder bolts (Fig. 35).
Slide chute assembly in a clockwise direction to
install or counterclockwise to remove.
Secure with screw (Fig. 35).
Check clearance between blade tips and chute
baffle making sure there is no contact (Fig. 36).
Note: The chute baffle must go behind the
front deck baffle and between blade
and toe guard to prevent contact with
blade (Fig. 36).
Remove knob and bolt securing left side upper
and lower handle sections (Fig. 37).
Hold hanger clamp on outside of handle
sections. Insert handle bolt from inside of handle
sections through holes in hanger clamp.
Position bag hanger leg into hanger clamp
groove and secure with knob. Repeat steps and
assemble clamp and hanger to right side handle
sections.
17
13. Close rear of bag by folding sides in and —
pressing interlocking rear handle halves together
(Fig. 38).
14. Position rear bag handles into bag hanger on
handle.
15. Grasp bag assembly handle and slide over flange
of grass chute (Fig. 39). Push downward on
handle until it seats into position.
Bag Adjustment
When handle height is changed bag adjustment may
be required. A properly adjusted bag should be taut
on top cloth area between front bag handle and rear
bag hanger handles. If bag is too tight or too loose,
adjust as follows:
1. Remove bag from rear bag hanger. Remove
bolt(s) and knob(s) securing hanger clamps to
handle sections (Fig. 37). Hanger clamps have
four adjustment holes.
2. Reassemble hanger clamps to handle sections
using whichever set of holes best holds bag taut.
Using lower holes in hanger clamps tightens bag
assembly and upper holes in hanger clamps
loosens bag assembly.
Note: Under normal use, bag materials are
subject to deterioration and wear.
Check grass bag often and replace
when necessary with an original
equipment replacement bag. A
weakened or inferior bag may let
objects pass through, causing injury.
ÁN WARNING
POTENTIAL HAZARD
e Keep hands, sticks or other objects out of
grass chute while blade is turning.
WHAT CAN HAPPEN
e Thrown objects or blade contact can cause
serious injury.
HOW TO AVOID THE HAZARD
* Always stop engine when emptying grass
bag and disconnect spark plug wire before
cleaning a clogged chute, bag tunnel or
underside of mower housing.
18
3. Reconnect spark plug wire.
Storage
To prepare lawn mower for off-season storage
perform recommended maintenance procedures. See
MAINTENANCE section.
Store mower in a cool, dry place.
Fuel
POTENTIAL HAZARD
¢ In certain conditions gasoline is extremely
flammable and highly explosive.
WHAT CAN HAPPEN
e A fire or explosion from gasoline can burn
you, others, and cause property damage.
HOW TO AVOID THE HAZARD
® Do not store gasoline (fuel) over long
periods of time.
® To prevent possible explosion of vaporized
fuel, do not store mower with fuel in the
tank or carburetor in an enclosure with an
open flame. (Example: furnace or water
heater pilot light.)
e Allow the engine to cool before storing in
any enclosure.
For long term storage, either drain gasoline from fuel
tank or add a fuel additive to the gasoline. To drain
gasoline, refer to Drain Gasoline, page 12. After fuel
1s drained, start engine and let it idle until all fuel is
consumed and engine stops. Repeat the starting
procedure two more times to ensure all gas is
removed from the engine. If gasoline 1s not drained
and a fuel stabilizer is not added, gum-like varnish
deposits will form and cause poor engine operation,
even starting problems.
Note: If engine is operating on oxygenated or
reformulated gasoline (gasoline
blended with an alcohol or an ether),
remove all fuel from tank and run
engine until it stops from lack of fuel
before storing.
Engine
1.
Remove spark plug. Using an oil can, squirt
about one tablespoon of oil through spark plug
hole (Fig. 40).
Slowly rotate engine several times, using starter
handle, to distribute oil (Fig. 33).
Replace spark plug but DO NOT connect spark
plug wire.
Folding Handle
1.
Squeeze bottom handle section together and
slide past stops of handle brackets (Fig. 41).
Rotate handle toward front of mower (Fig. 42).
Note: Fold handle only as illustrated. If
handle is folded in opposite direction
damage will occur to control cables.
Loosen knobs securing top handle section to
bottom section and fold top handle section back
towards rear of mower into storage position.
Removing From Storage
1.
Unfold handle. See handle assembly instructions
in ASSEMBLY section
Check and tighten all fasteners,
Remove spark plug (Fig. 4) and spin engine
rapidly using starter to blow excess oil from the
cylinder. Clean spark plug or replace if cracked,
broken or electrodes are worn.
Install spark plug and torque to 180 in.-lbs.
(15 ft.-Ibs.) (20 N-m).
Perform recommended maintenance procedures.
See MAINTENANCE section.
Fill fuel tank (Fig. 9) with fresh, clean
gasoline/oil mix.
Reconnect spark plug wire (Fig. 4).
