Thetransformerisequippedwithaninternalcircuitprotector. Ifthecircuitprotectortrips,unplugthepowercordfromthe electricalwalloutlet,checkyourlayoutforanyshortcircuits. Thecircuitbreakerwillresetautomaticallywhentheshortis removedfromthecircuit.
Unplugthetransformerfromtheelectricalwalloutletwhennotinuse.
Donotusethistransformerforotherthanitsintendedpurpose.

Basic Operation
ThrottleUp
ThrottleupthepowertoyourtrackbypressingthetopendoftheThrottle
ControlRockerSwitchfirmlyforabout5seconds,untiltheengine'sheadlightand lightedcarsburnbright. Thenputtheengineintomotionbyfirmlypressingthe
Directionbutton(holditforapproximately1second)onyourremoteonce. Iftheengine doesnotbegintomoveassoonasyoufirmlypresstheDirectionbutton,youmaynot havesentenoughvoltagetothetracktomakethetrainmove. Pressthethrottleupfora fewmoresecondsuntilthetrainbeginstomove.
Toincreaseordecreasetrackvoltage,andthereforetrainspeed,pressthethrottlecontrol rockerswitch. Pressingthetopendofthethrottlewillincreasevoltageandspeed.
Pressingthebottomendofthethrottlewilldecreasevoltageandspeed.
Theenginewillmaintainthespeedyousetafteryoureleasethethrottleuntilyoupressit againtochangethevoltageandspeed.
Bell
- Tosoundthebell,firmly pressandreleasetheBell button.Toturnthebelloff, pressandreleasetheBellbutton again. Thebellwillcontinueto ringfromthetimeyouturniton untilyoupressandreleasethe buttonagaintoturnitoff.
EmergencyStop
Pressthe
EmergencyStopbuttonandall trainsonthetrackcontrolledby theremotewillstopuntilyou reapplyvoltage. Thisisaneasy waytoshutdownyourtrainsat theendofasessionortostop suddenlyifthetrain'spath becomesobstructed.
Horn/Whistle
- Tosoundthehorn, firmlypresstheHorn/Whistle button.Thehornwillsoundforas
longasyoucontinuetodepressthe button. Itwillstopwhenyou releasethebutton.
Throttle
Direction
Yourtrainis programmedtostartinneutral.
Thetrainwillalwayscycle neutral-forward-neutral-reverse witheachpressandreleaseofthe directionbutton. Theengineis programmedtorestartinneutral eachtimethetrackvoltageis turnedofffor25secondsormore.

Speed Control
M.T.H.enginesequippedwithLoco-Soundhavespeedcontrolcapabilitiesthatallowthe enginetomaintainaconstantspeedupanddowngradesandaroundcurves,muchlikean automobilecruisecontrol. Youcanaddordropcarsontherun,andtheenginewill maintainthespeedyouset.
Theengineisprogrammedtostartwiththespeedcontrolfeatureactivated,youcanoptto turnitoff. Thismeanstheengine'sspeedwillfallasitlaborsupahillandincreaseasit travelsdownward. Itisalsoaffectedbytheadditionorreleasingofcarswhileontherun.
Becausetheenginewillrunmoreslowlyatagiventhrottlevoltagewhenspeedcontrolis onthanwhenitisoff,youshouldadjustthethrottletoalowerpowerlevelforoperation withspeedcontrolofftoavoidhigh-speedderailments.
Toturnspeedcontrolonandoff,
puttheengineinneutral,thenquicklytapthe transformer'sHornbuttononetimethenquicklytaptheBellbuttontwotimes,allowing approximately½secondtolapsebetweeneachquickbuttonpress. Repeatthe1horn,2 bellscodetoreturnittotheothercondition.
Youwillwanttodothisduringtheinitial neutraluponstart-upifyouevercouplethisenginetoanotherenginethatisnot equippedwithspeedcontroltoavoidderailmentanddamagingthemotorsineither engine.
Eachtimeyoushutdowntheenginecompletely,itwillautomaticallyturnspeed controlon.

Lubrication and Greasing Instructions
Theengineshouldbeoiledandgreasedinordertorunproperly.
Regularlylubricateallaxlesandlinkagecomponentsandpickuprollersto preventsqueaking. Uselighthouseholdoil,suchasthatfoundinM.T.H.'s maintenancekit. Donotoveroil. Useonlyadroportwooneachpivotpoint.

Oncethemotormountscrewhasbeenremoved,pullthe motorawayfromthetruckblockandlightlycoatthemotor wormgearandbronzedrivegear(inthetruckblock)with grease.
Reassemblethetruckandmotor,beingcarefulnottopinch thepickupandgroundwiresbetweenthetruckblockand motormount.
Repeattheprocedureifenginehasmorethanonemotor.
Reassemblethechassisandbody,beingcarefulthatthe wiresarenotcaughtbetweenthebodyandchassis,as thiscanleadtoashortthatmaydamagetheelectronics beyondrepair.

Lubricatetheoutsidetruckblockidlerand drivegearswithgreaseoccasionally.

CleaningtheWheels,TiresandTrack
Periodicallycheckthelocomotivewheelsandpickupsfordirt andbuildup,whichcancausepoorelectricalcontactandtraction andprematurelywearouttheneoprenetractiontires. Wheelsand tirescanbecleanedusingdenatured(notrubbing)alcoholapplied withacottonswab.
Tocleanthetrack,useRailKingTrackCleaningFluidandacleanragordenatured(not rubbing)alcohol. Unplugthetransformerandwipetherailsofthetrack,turningtherag frequentlytoensurethatyouareusingcleanclothontherails. Becausethe manufacturingprocessleavesacoatingonRealTraxcenterrail,youshouldcleantherails afterthefirst30minutesofuse(youmaynoticeanelectricalsmellduringinitialuseas thecoatingwearsoff;thisisnormal). Thereafter,keepaneyeonthetrackandcleanit whenitgetsdirtytoensuregoodelectricalcontactandtolengthenthelifeofthetires.
Traction TireReplacement Instructions
Yourlocomotiveisequippedwithtwoneoprenerubbertractiontiresontherearsetof flangeddrivers. Whilethesetiresareextremelydurable,youmayneedtoreplacethemat somepoint.

Makesuretheoldtirehasbeencompletely removedfromthegrooveinthedrivewheel, usingarazorbladeorsmallflatheadscrewdriver topryawayanyremains.

Cleanthegrooveusingacottonswaband denaturedalcohol.

usetwosmallflatheadscrewdriverstostretchthetireover thewheel.

Ifyoutwistthetirewhilestretchingitoverthewheel,you willneedtoremoveandreinstallthetire. Otherwiseyour enginewillwobblewhileoperating.

Makesurethetireisfullyseatedinsidethegroove. U s e a razorbladetotrimawayanyexcesstirethatdoesn'tseat itselfinsidethegrooveproperly.

Reassemblethetrucksidestothetruckblocks.

Turnthecarover,paddingitcarefullytoavoidscratches

RemovethesmallPhillipsscrewthatisholdingthe groundwireinplacefromeachtruck(twoscrewstotal).
Releaseonewirefromunderthescrew,andpulltheother wirefromitsconnectiontothepick-uprollerassemblyof eachtruck.

Turnthetruckssothatyoucanreachtheinteriormountingscrewlocatedundereachtruck(two screwstotal),andremovethem.

Poptheroofoffthecarbyholdingeachendofthecarandtwistingthemintheoppositedirection,then gentlyremovetheroofandinteriorfromthechassis,pullingtheloosenedwirescompletelyfreefromthe chassisasyoulift.

Turntheinterioroverandremovethefourscrewsfromthebottomtoseparatethetwolevelsoftheinterior.
ReplacethetwolowerlightbulbsbytiltingtheirhousingandpoppingthemoutlikeChristmastreelights.

Removethefourscrewsonthebottomoftheupperinteriortoremovetheroof. Pullitoffandreplacethe fourbulbsbypoppingthemoutlikeChristmastreelights.
Reassemblethecarinthereverseorder,makingsurethattheinteriorisplacedinsidethebodytherightway.
Ifitisbackwards,apostwillshowthroughawindowwhenlookingatthesideview.(Seefigure7)
Takecarethatwiresarenotpincheduponreassemblyandthatwhenyoureconnectthemtothetrucks,they donotrubagainstawheel,aspinchedorrubbedwirescancauseshorts.

StartingUp Remedy
W h e n I f i r s t t u r n t h e p o w e r o n , t h e enginewillnotbegintorun.
The e ngine w illnotstartafterIpress theDirectionbutton.
Thisisnormalbehavior.Topreventaccidentalhigh-speed start-ups,Loco-Soundisprogrammedtostartupinneutral anytimetrackpowerhasbeenturnedoffforseveralseconds.

Youmaynotbesendingenoughpowertothetracktopower theengine. Pressthethrottleupforafewmoresecondsto increasetrackpower.
Horn Remedy

Volume
Theenginemaybelockedintotheneutralposition. Follow the procedure i n t h e " Lockinto a Direction"section to unlocktheengine'sdirection.
Enginespeedmustbebelow10scalemph(approx.10volts
orlessinconventionalmode).
Remedy
The soundsseemdistorted, especiallywhentheHornorbellis activated.

Turn thevolume controlknobonthebottomofthechassiscounter-clockwise toreducethevolume.

Proto-Cast and-Dispatch
WhenItrytoplaymusicormy voicethroughmyengine'sspeakers, there ispoppingandinterference.
MyProto-Castsoundsplaytoo quietlyorunclearly.
WhenItrytoplayProto-Cast,the engine'ssoundskeepbreakinginon myrecording.
WhenIruntwoLoco-Sound enginesontracksneareach other, theProto-Castand Dispatchsounds play frombothengines,notjust fromtheoneconnectedto theaudio sourceormicrophone.
Cleanthetrackwithdenaturedalcohol,asdescribedinthe
"CleaningtheWheels,Tires,andTrack"sectionofthis book.
Unplugthecablebetweentheaudiosourceandtheremote lock-on. Re-plugitintotheaudiosourcefirst,thenintothe lock-on,pushingfirmlytomakesureitisfullyinstalled.
Yourrecordingmaybeplayingtooquietlytotriggerthe enginetostopplayingitsownsoundset. Turnupthe volumeof theaudiosourceyouareusing.
Thisisnormalbehavior.BecauseLoco-Soundusesradio wavestotransmitthesoundtotheengine,otherLoco-
Soundenginesinthesamerangewillalso pickupthe sound.Try movingoneofthesets.
