Thenputtheengineintomotionbyfirmlypressingthe Directionbutton(holditforapproximately1second)onyourremoteonce. Iftheengine doesnotbegintomoveassoonasyoufirmlypresstheDirectionbutton,youmaynot havesentenoughvoltagetothetracktomakethetrainmove. Pressthethrottleupfora fewmoresecondsuntilthetrainbeginstomove. Toincreaseordecreasetrackvoltage,andthereforetrainspeed,pressthethrottlecontrol rockerswitch. Pressingthetopendofthethrottlewillincreasevoltageandspeed. Pressingthebottomendofthethrottlewilldecreasevoltageandspeed. Theenginewillmaintainthespeedyousetafteryoureleasethethrottleuntilyoupressit againtochangethevoltageandspeed. Bell - Tosoundthebell,firmly pressandreleasetheBell button.Toturnthebelloff, pressandreleasetheBellbutton again. Thebellwillcontinueto ringfromthetimeyouturniton untilyoupressandreleasethe buttonagaintoturnitoff. Horn/Whistle - Tosoundthehorn, firmlypresstheHorn/Whistle button.Thehornwillsoundforas longasyoucontinuetodepressthe button. Itwillstopwhenyou releasethebutton. Throttle EmergencyStop Pressthe EmergencyStopbuttonandall trainsonthetrackcontrolledby theremotewillstopuntilyou reapplyvoltage. Thisisaneasy waytoshutdownyourtrainsat theendofasessionortostop suddenlyifthetrain'spath becomesobstructed. Direction Yourtrainis programmedtostartinneutral. Thetrainwillalwayscycle neutral-forward-neutral-reverse witheachpressandreleaseofthe directionbutton. Theengineis programmedtorestartinneutral eachtimethetrackvoltageis turnedofffor25secondsormore. CyclePhases Neutral Reverse Forward Neutral RailKing2-8-0SteamFreightSetwithLoco-Sound™ 7 Speed Control M.T.H.enginesequippedwithLoco-Soundhavespeedcontrolcapabilitiesthatallowthe enginetomaintainaconstantspeedupanddowngradesandaroundcurves,muchlikean automobilecruisecontrol. Youcanaddordropcarsontherun,andtheenginewill maintainthespeedyouset. Whiletheengineisprogrammedtostartwiththespeedcontrolfeatureactivated,youcan opttoturnitoff. Thismeanstheengine'sspeedwillfallasitlaborsupahillandincrease asittravelsdownward. Itisalsoaffectedbytheadditionorreleasingofcarswhileonthe run. Tomaintainaconstantspeedwhenspeedcontrolisturnedoff,youneedtoadjust trackvoltageyourself. Toturnspeedcontrolonandoff, puttheengineinneutral,thenquicklytapthe transformer'sWhistlebuttononetimethenquicklytaptheBellbuttontwotimes,allowing approximately½secondtolapsebetweeneachquickbuttonpress. Repeatthe1whistle,2 bellscodetoreturnittotheothercondition. Youwillwanttodothisduringtheinitial neutraluponstart-upifyouevercouplethisenginetoanotherenginethatisnot equippedwithspeedcontroltoavoiddamagingthemotorsineitherengine. Each timeyoushutdowntheenginecompletely,itwillautomaticallyturnspeedcontrolon. TimingChart ½ Sec. Pause ½Sec. Theenginewillnotchangedirection(includinggoingintoneutral)untilyourepeatthe1 whistle,3bellscodetoreturntheenginetoitsnormalcondition,eveniftheengineiskept withoutpowerforextendedperiodsoftime. Youmustsupplytheaudiosource(asmallportableCD/tapeplayeris sufficient)andamale-to-maleminicable(1/8"plug,likethatusedfor theheadsetwithaportableCD/tapeplayer)toconnectyouraudio sourcetotheremotelock-on. TouseProto-Cast ! Plugthemini-cable first intoyouraudiosource(usuallyintotheheadphonejack) ! PlugCableintothe"Audio"portontherightsideoftheremotelock-on. ! Adjustthevolume. RailKing2-8-0SteamFreightSetwithLoco-Sound™ 9 IfusingparalleltrackswithmultipleLoco-Soundequippedengines,Proto-Castand Proto-Dispatchtransmissionsfromonetrackmaybepickedupbytheothernearby engines. IfyouexperiencepoppingandinterferencewhenusingProto-CastorProto-Dispatch,try cleaningthetrackwithdenaturedalcoholasdescribedinthe"CleaningtheWheels,Tires andTrack"sectionofthisbooklet. NOTE: M.T.H.doesnotrecommendusingProto-Cast andProto-Dispatchatthesametime. ManualVolumeControl Toadjustthevolumeofallsoundsmadebythis engine,turnthemastervolumecontrolknob locatedunderthetenderclockwisetoincreasethe volumeandcounter-clockwisetodecreasethe volume. 10 increase RailKing2-8-0SteamFreightSetwithLoco-Sound™ Maintenance CareoftheRemoteControl Toensuretrouble-freeoperation: ! Ifyourtrainrespondsinconsistently,replaceoldbatterieswithfreshones. Donot mixoldandnewbatteries. Lubrication Instructions Theengineshouldbeoiledandgreasedinordertorunproperly. Regularlylubricateallsiderodsandlinkagecomponentsandpickuprollers topreventsqueaking. Uselighthouseholdoil,suchasthatfoundin M.T.H.'smaintenancekit. Donotoveroil. Useonlyadroportwooneach pivotpoint. LubricateValveGear LubricatePick-UpRollers (DoNotOiltheFlatPartof Pick-UpRollers) DONOT OVER OIL LubricateSideRods Greasing Instructions Thelocomotive'sinternalgearingwasgreasedatthefactory. Greaseengineevery50 hoursofuseoroneyear. Usealithiumbasedgreaseandfollowthegreasinginstructions. ! Removethescrewfromthechassistoopen thegreaseport. ! Insertthegreasetubetipintotheportand squeezethetubeonceortwicetoaddgrease tothegearbox. ! Wipeoffanyexcessgreaseandreplacethe phillipsscrewsecurely. RailKing2-8-0SteamFreightSetwithLoco-Sound™ 11 CleaningtheWheels,TiresandTrack Periodicallycheckthelocomotivewheelsandpickups fordirtandbuildup,whichcancausepoorelectrical contactandtractionandprematurelywearoutthe neoprenetractiontires. Wheelsandtirescanbecleaned usingdenatured(notrubbing)alcoholappliedwitha cottonswab. Tocleanthetrack,useRailKingTrackCleaningFluid andacleanragordenatured(notrubbing)alcohol. Unplugthetransformerandwipethe railsofthetrack,turningtheragfrequentlytoensurethatyouareusingcleanclothonthe rails. BecausethemanufacturingprocessleavesacoatingonRealTraxcenterra il,you shouldcleantherailsafterthefirst30minutesofuse(youmaynoticeanelectricalsmell duringinitialuseasthecoatingwearsoff;thisisnormal). Thereafter,keepaneyeonthe trackandcleanitwhenitgetsdirtytoensuregoodelectricalcontactandtolengthenthe lifeofthetires. Traction TireReplacement Instructions Yourlocomotiveisequippedwithtwoneoprenerubbertractiontiresontherearsetof flangeddrivers. Whilethesetiresareextremelydurable,youmayneedtoreplacethemat somepoint. STEP ! Removethesiderods(therodsthatconnecteachdrivewheeltotheother)from thewheelsinordertoslipthenewtireoverthegrooveddrivewheel. These screwscanbeloosenedwitha5mmnutdriver. ! Cleanthegrooveusingacottonswabanddenaturedalcohol. STEP ! Makesuretheoldtirehasbeencompletelyremovedfromthegrooveinthedrive wheel,usingarazorbladeorsmallflatheadscrewdrivertopryawayanyremains. ! Cleanthegrooveusingacottonswabanddenaturedalcohol. ! Slipthenewtireontothewheel. Youmayfinditusefultousetwosmallflathead screwdriverstostretchthetireoverthewheel. ! Ifyoutwistthetirewhilestretchingitoverthewheel,youwillneedtoremoveand reinstallthetire. Otherwiseyourenginewillwobblewhileoperating. ! Makesurethetireisfullyseatedinsidethegroove. Usearazorbladetotrimaway anyexcesstirethatdoesn'tseatitselfinsidethegrooveproperly. ® ProtoSmoke UnitOperation Thissteamlocomotivecontainsasmokeunitthatoutputssmokethroughthesmokestack ontheboileroftheengine. Thesmokeunitisessentiallyasmallheatingelementand wickthatsoaksupandthenheatsamineraloil-basedfluidthatemitsaharmlesssmoke. Thesmokeisthenforcedoutofthestackbyasmallelectricfan. Withafeweasymaintenancesteps,youshouldenjoytrouble-freesmokeunitoperation foryears. ! 12 Whenpreparingtorunthisengine,add15-20dropsofsmokefluidthroughthe smokestack. WerecommendM.T.H.ProtoSmoke,Seuthe,LGB,orLVTSfluids(a RailKing2-8-0SteamFreightSetwithLoco-Sound™ smallpipetteofProtoSmokefluidisincluded). Do notoverfilltheunitorthefluidmayleakoutandcoat theinteriorenginecomponents. Ifyouchoosenottoaddthefluid(orhavealready addedthefluidbutchoosetorunsmoke-free),turnoff thesmokeunitswitchlocatedunderthetenderbody. Failureeithertoaddfluidtotheunitortoturnit offmaydamagethesmokeunitheatingelement and/orwickingmaterial. ! Add15-20Drops Add15-20Drops SmokeFluid SmokeFluid Runningtheenginewithoutaprimed smokeunitmaycausedamage ! ! ! Whenthesmokeoutputwhilerunningtheengine beginstodiminish,addanother10-15dropsofsmoke fluidorturnthesmokeunitoff. Whenstoringtheunitforlongperiodsoftime, youmaywanttoaddabout15dropsoffluidto preventthewickfromdryingout. Afterremovingtheenginefromstorage,add another25dropsoffluid,lettingthewicksoak upthefluidfor15minutespriortooperation. Ifyouexperiencepoorornosmokeoutputwhenthesmoke unitisonandhasfluid,checkthewicktoseeifithas becomehard,blackened,andunabsorbentaroundthe heatingelement. Removetheboilerasshownbelow. Removethesmokeunitinspectioncoverfromthe locomotive'sbody(seeright). Afterremovingthechassis andinspectioncoverscrews,lifttheinspectionplateaway andinspectthewick. Ifitisdarklydiscoloredandhard,it shouldbereplaced. Whenprimingnewwickadd40drops. SmokeUnit ON/OFFSwitch SmokeUnitCover Wickin Poor Condition Wickin Good Condition LocomotiveLightBulbReplacement Toreplacethelightbulbinthelocomotive,followtheboilerremovalinstructionsbelow. STEP RemovethesixPhillipsscrewsfromthechassisthenliftthebodyawayfromthechassis. RailKing2-8-0SteamFreightSetwithLoco-Sound™ 13 STEP Oncethelocomotiveboilerhasbeenremoved fromitschassis,locatethebulbbracketasseenin theillustrationontherightandrotatethe headlightbulbcounter-clockwisetoremove. Replace HeadlightBulb CabooseLightBulbReplacement Toreplacetheinteriorlightbulbsfollowtheseinstructionsandseethediagramsbelow. STEP STEP Lowerthechassisfromthe shell,takingcarenottopull thewiresout. Removethefour(4) screwslocatedunder thecaboose'strucks. STEP End Frame StepPlatform STEP Carefullyloosenthe endframesonboth endsfromthestep platform. Lowerthe chassisfrom theshell, takingcarenot topullthe wiresout. Thengrasptheend framebythebottom andpivotoutward5 degrees. Remove thestepplatforms frombothends. STEP ReplaceaBayonetBulbbyturningand pushingup,pullingthebulbfromitssocket.
