Basic Operation

OperationButtons

ThrottleUp

ThrottleupthepowertoyourtrackbypressingthetopendoftheThrottle

ControlRockerSwitchfirmlyforabout5seconds,untiltheengine'sheadlightand lightedcarsburnbright. Thenputtheengineintomotionbyfirmlypressingthe

Directionbutton(holditforapproximately1second)onyourremoteonce. Iftheengine doesnotbegintomoveassoonasyoufirmlypresstheDirectionbutton,youmaynot havesentenoughvoltagetothetracktomakethetrainmove. Pressthethrottleupfora fewmoresecondsuntilthetrainbeginstomove.

Toincreaseordecreasetrackvoltage,andthereforetrainspeed,pressthethrottlecontrol rockerswitch. Pressingthetopendofthethrottlewillincreasevoltageandspeed.

Pressingthebottomendofthethrottlewilldecreasevoltageandspeed.

Theenginewillmaintainthespeedyousetafteryoureleasethethrottleuntilyoupressit againtochangethevoltageandspeed.

Bell

- Tosoundthebell,firmly pressandreleasetheBell button.Toturnthebelloff, pressandreleasetheBellbutton again. Thebellwillcontinueto ringfromthetimeyouturniton untilyoupressandreleasethe buttonagaintoturnitoff.

Horn/Whistle

- Becausethis unitdoesnotprototypicallyhave ahorn,pressingthehornbutton willsoundabell(differentfrom thebellbuttonbell). Thebell willcontinueringaslongasyou holdthebutton.

Throttle

EmergencyStop

Pressthe

EmergencyStopbuttonandall trainsonthetrackcontrolledby theremotewillstopuntilyou reapplyvoltage. Thisisaneasy waytoshutdownyourtrainsat theendofasessionortostop suddenlyif thetrain'spath becomesobstructed.

Direction

Yourtrainis programmedtostartinneutral.

Thetrainwillalwayscycle neutral-forward-neutral-reverse witheachpressandreleaseofthe directionbutton. Theengineis programmedtorestartinneutral eachtimethetrackvoltageis turnedofffor25secondsormore.

Proto-Sound 2.0 Operating Instructions

ThismanualcontainstheoperatinginstructionsforProto-Sound2.0inconventional

modeonly. InstructionsforaccessingDCScommandmodefeaturesaccompanythe

DCSRemoteControlSystemequipment.

BecauseProto-Sound2.0isanall-newsystemdevelopedbyM.T.H.'sownresearchand developmentteam,itoperatesdifferentlyfromoriginalProto-Sound.MostProto-Sound

2.0featuresareautomaticallyenabled,andResethasbeeneliminated,sothereisnoneed toprogramfeaturesaswithoriginalProto-Sound.Althoughthenewsystemiseasierto

operatethanoriginalProto-Sound,youshouldreadtheseinstructionsthoroughlybefore usingProto-Sound2.0featuresinordertopreventharmtoyourselforyourequipment.

ActivatingProto-Sound2.0ConventionalModeFeatures:

AnnouncementSounds,hereafterknownasTAS. Thiseasy-to-usefeatureplaysdigitally reproducedtransitannouncementsandplatformactionsoundswheneveryouactivateand stopyourengine. Noadditionalwiresormodificationsareneededonyourlayoutto enjoytheseamazingsoundeffects.Thesedifferentsoundsareheardeachtimeyougivea

longbellbuttonpress. TheentireTASsequenceisdesignedtosimulatethearrival, disembarking,embarking,anddepartureofatransitstop.Thesoundsincludethedriver

announcingthestopandtheupcomingstop,passengerdisembarkingandembarking

sounds,drivertopassengerrequests,dooropeningsandclosingandgeneraltransitstop sounds. Afterthestationsoundshavefinished,theenginewillshiftbackintogearand,if thethrottleissethighenough,willpullawayfromthestation.

ToactivatetheTAS,pressandholdthebellbuttonforapproximately2seconds.

IfyoudonotwishtostopatthestationthatisannouncedafteractivatingTAS,press andholdthebellbuttonagainwithoutthrottlingdownthetrain.

2. LearnMode

InLearnMode,theenginemaybeprogrammedwitheitheran"Out&Back"routeora st

"Loop"route.An"Out&Back"routebegins a t t h e 1 station(asprogrammedbythe operator),stopsatintermediatestations,endsatthelaststation,thenreversesitsroute s t st untilitreachesthe1 station.A"Loop"routebeginsatthe1 station(asprogrammedby theoperator),stopsatintermediatestations,endsatthelaststation,andthenbeginsthe st routeoveragainatthe1 station.

4.PressandholdtheHornbuttonuntila"saved"responseconfirmsthatstation'slocation andnamearesavedinmemory.

5.ProceedtothenextstopbypressingtheDirectionbutton.

6.PresstheDirectionbuttontostopthetrainagainwhenyouhavereachedthenext

desiredstationlocation.

7.UsingtheBellbutton,selectthenameofthestation,thensaveusingtheHornbutton.

8.Repeatsteps5-7untilyouarereadytoprogramthelaststopintheroute.

9.Themannerofsavingthelaststationintheroutedetermineswhethertheroutewillbe

an"Out&Back"or"Loop"route.

• "Out&Back":followsteps5-7tosavethelaststation.AfteryoupresstheHorn

buttonandthesoundsystemplaysthe"Saved"confirmation,presstheHornbutton again.Another"Saved"confirmationwillplayandthecarwillexitLearnModeand enterManualMode.

AutoMode

WhenyouhavefinishedprogrammingyourstationsinLearnthecarwillbeinManual

Mode.RunninginForward,stopthecaratthelocationofthefirstprogrammedstationby pressingtheDirectionbutton.PressBell-Horn-HorntoputthetrainintoAutoMode.

PresstheDirectionbuttonagaintobeginoperationinAutoMode.BecauseAutoMode

operationbeginsatthefirststop,thenextstopannouncedwillbethesecondstop. The carwillautomaticallytravel,stoppingandmakingannouncementsateachprogrammed stop,aslongasitremainsinautomode.

Speed Control:

M.T.H.enginesequippedwithProto-Sound2.0havespeedcontrolcapabilitiesthat

allowtheenginetomaintainaconstantspeedupanddowngradesandaroundcurves, muchlikeanautomobilecruisecontrol. Youcanaddordropcarsontherun,andthe enginewillmaintainthespeedyouset.

Whiletheengineisprogrammedtostartwiththespeedcontrolfeatureactivated,you canopttoturnitoff. Thismeanstheengine'sspeedwillfallasitlaborsupahilland increaseasittravelsdownward. Itisalsoaffectedbytheadditionorreleasingofcars whileontherun.

Toturnspeedcontrolonandoff,

puttheengineinneutral,thenquicklytapthe transformer'sHornbuttononetimethenquicklytaptheBellbuttontwotimes,allowing approximately½secondtolapsebetweeneachquickbuttonpres s. Twobellringswill indicatethattheenginehasmadethechange. Repeatthe1horn,2bellscodetoreturnit totheothercondition.

Youwillwanttodothisduringtheinitialneutraluponstart upifyouevercouplethisenginetoanotherenginethatisnotequippedwithspeed controltoavoiddamagingthemotorsineitherengine.

Eachtimeyoushutdownthe enginecompletely,itwillautomaticallyturnspeedcontrolon.

Note:

Whenspeedcontrolisturnedoff,theProto-Sound2.0systemwilllimitthevolumein

ordertooperatemoresmoothlyatlowervoltages. Fullvolumeisrestoredupon reactivatingspeedcontrol.

Lock intoaDirection:

Youcanlockyourengineintoadirection(forward,neutral,orreverse)sothatitwillnot changedirections. Todothis,puttheengineintothedirectionyouwant(orintoneutral tolockitintoneutral),runitataveryslowcrawl(asslowlyasitwillmovewithout halting),andquicklybutfirmlytaptheHornbuttononcefollowedbythreequicktapsof the Bellbutton,allowingapproximately½secondtolapsebetweeneachquickbutton press.Twobellringswillindicatethattheenginehasmadethechange.

Theengine willnotchangedirection(includinggoingintoneutral)untilyourepeatthe1horn,3 bellscodetoreturnthee nginetoitsnormalcondition,eveniftheengineiskeptwithout powerforextendedperiodsoftime.

ResettoFactoryDefaults:

Tooverridethesettingsyoucurrentlyhaveassignedtotheengineandresetittoits factorydefaults,whileinNeutralquicklytaptheHorn buttonquicklyonce,followedby fivequicktapsoftheBellbutton,allowingapproximately½secondtolapsebetween eachquickbuttonpr ess.Twobellringswillindicatethattheenginehasmadethe

change.

YourRailKingRemoteControlSystemshouldofferyearsoftrouble-freeservice. There areafewthingsyoucandotoensuretrouble-freeoperation:

Ifyourtrainrespondsinconsistently,replaceoldbatterieswithfreshones. Donot mixoldandnewbatteries.

Removebatteriesbeforestoringforextendedperiods.

Donotdroptheremote. Itcandamagethedelicateelectronicsinside.

Reassemblethetruckandmotor,beingcarefulnottopinch thepickupandgroundwiresbetweenthetruckblockand motormount.

Repeattheprocedureifenginehasmorethanonemotor.

Reassemblethechassisandbody,beingcarefulthatthe wiresarenotcaughtbetweenthebodyandchassis,as thiscanleadtoashortthatmaydamagetheelectronics beyondrepair.

CleaningtheWheels,TiresandTrack

Periodicallycheckthelocomotivewheelsandpickupsfordirt andbuildup,whichcancausepoorelectricalcontactandtraction andprematurelywearouttheneoprenetractiontires. Wheelsand tirescanbecleanedusingdenatured(notrubbing)alcoholapplied withacottonswab.

Tocleanthetrack,useRailKingTrackCleaningFluidandacleanragordenatured(not rubbing)alcohol. Unplugthetransformerandwipetherailsofthetrack,turningtherag frequentlytoensurethatyouareusingcleanclothontherails. Becausethe manufacturingprocessleavesacoatingonRealTraxcenterrail,youshouldcleantherails afterthefirst30minutesofuse(youmaynoticeanelectricalsmellduringinitialuseas thecoatingwearsoff;thisisnormal). Thereafter,keepaneyeonthetrackandcleanit whenitgetsdirtytoensuregoodelectricalcontactandtolengthenthelifeofthetires.

ThespecialNiCad7-cell8.4vself-chargingbatteryrechargescontinuouslyduringtrain operationand shouldlastforuptofiveyears. Thebatteryisadrybatterythatshouldnot leakorcauseanydamagetoyourengine.

Dependinguponwhenyourenginewas built,itmayneedtobechargedrightoutofthebox.

Ifenginesoundsseemdistorted orgarbledatlowvoltagesorbecomesilentwhenpowerfromthetransformeristurned off,testthebatterytodeterminewhetheritshouldberechargedorreplaced.

M.T.H., you will be given a return authorization number to assure that your merchandisewillbeproperlyhandleduponitsreceipt.

CAUTION: Makesuretheproductispackedinitsoriginalfactorypackagingincluding itsfoamandplasticwrappingmaterialsoastopreventdamagetothemerchandise. The shipmentmustbeprepaidandwerecommendthatitbeinsured.
