Overview of AlphaQuiz
SmartApplet System
Introducing AlphaQuiz
AlphaQuiz
®
SmartApplet
®
System automates the administration of classroom quizzes, letting you design and store quizzes on a computer, administer the quizzes on a classroom set of AlphaSmart devices, and retrieve the results to your computer for automatic grading and reporting.
Important: In this guide, the term AlphaSmart device refers to both
AlphaSmart 3000s and Neos. It does not refer to the Dana line of products made by AlphaSmart.
Because teachers and students use different components of the system, AlphaQuiz operates on both a desktop computer and on
AlphaSmart devices. The task of creating, administering, and managing quizzes with AlphaQuiz is as follows:
1. The teacher creates quizzes using a desktop computer, then downloads a particular quiz into students’ AlphaSmart devices.
2. Students take the quiz on the AlphaSmart devices.
3. The teacher retrieves quiz responses to the desktop computer, then grades them and prints reports.

Overview of AlphaQuiz SmartApplet System 5
Creating quizzes
Creating quizzes
You can use AlphaQuiz to create a quiz for almost any subject. For example, you can design math quizzes with calculation or reasoning questions, science quizzes with multiple choice or short answer questions, and history and English quizzes with essay questions.
Quizzes or tests can be short or long, simple or complex, written for any student who can use a keyboard—from grade school to high school. You’ll be able to reuse them for more than one class, revise them for future use, share them with other teachers, and edit them later or as you go along.
You create quizzes on your computer using QuizDesigner, part of the
AlphaQuiz system. Quizzes are stored in your computer until you release them for student use. In the course of designing a quiz, you have the option of defining a password to maintain test-taking security within the classroom and from class to class.
Applying restrictions
As you create quizzes, you may want to put restrictions on how your students use their AlphaSmart devices during the quiz. QuizDesigner provides a number of ways to do this:
• You can prevent students from using the Calculator SmartApplet during a quiz.
• You can prevent students from using the device’s spell check function during a quiz.
• You can require use of an access password and student passwords to maintain test security and make sure that only assigned students take the quiz.
6 AlphaQuiz User’s Guide
Administering, grading, and managing quizzes
Editing questions
QuizDesigner uses familiar word processing editing functions to help you edit questions as you compose (such as cut, copy, paste, undo, and so on). You can also open a saved quiz for editing. (See the caution note on page 26 about saving over existing quiz files.)
In addition, you can export the text of any quiz (both questions and possible answers) into your desktop computer’s word processing application for more elaborate editing, such as spell-checking and grammar-checking.
Reviewing questions on an AlphaSmart device preview
As you compose a test, QuizDesigner allows you to see how your questions will look to your students as they view them on their
AlphaSmart devices (see the example on page 46). This is useful for getting a sense of how questions flow and how your questions and possible answers will appear onscreen. Take note that your students can change the font size of the quiz questions on the Neos. See
“Changing font size” on page 56 for more information.
Administering, grading, and managing quizzes
QuizManager is the most sophisticated portion of the AlphaQuiz software. QuizManager is where you control the release of quizzes and retrieve and track student responses. QuizManager makes the grading process speedy and automated. You can assign different point values to questions if you like. You can also compile statistics such as averages, means, most frequently missed questions, and score distributions.
Overview of AlphaQuiz SmartApplet System 7
Administering, grading, and managing
Sending quizzes to AlphaSmart devices
Because quizzes are composed and stored on your computer, you need to send a quiz to your students’ AlphaSmart devices before they can take it. This is a quick process using the AlphaHub, which allows you to connect up to thirty AlphaSmart devices at once to your computer. You can also connect directly to individual AlphaSmart devices using a USB cable.
When the AlphaSmart devices are connected to your computer, the
QuizManager control window allows you to send or remove quizzes from them, retrieve or delete student answers, and turn off the
AlphaSmart devices.
Administering quizzes
Once you send a quiz to your students’ AlphaSmart devices, the students can use the AlphaQuiz SmartApplet to take the quiz.
Students select the correct quiz from a list of available quizzes, enter their names and the passwords and information you’ve required, and proceed through the questions.
• True/false questions require students to type in T or F.
• Multiple choice questions require students to type in the letter corresponding to the correct answer.
• Short Answer questions allow students to type in a response of eighteen characters or fewer.
• Essay questions allow students to write a prose response to the question. You can set a maximum allowable number of words.
Printing and saving quizzes
At the end of a quiz, students can print the quiz and their responses, or export them to a file in AlphaWord. Both of these options are controlled by teacher settings within the quiz.
8 AlphaQuiz User’s Guide
Administering, grading, and managing quizzes
Retrieving students’ responses
When students finish a quiz, they again connect their AlphaSmart devices to the AlphaHub or direct USB cable. From there, you can retrieve their responses to your computer.
Once a class has finished taking the test, you can administer it to other classes, revise it, or archive it for future use.
Viewing a response set
The Student Response window in QuizManager lists your students by name and class for a given quiz, and shows each student’s score and whether the student’s responses have all been graded.
Grading quizzes
QuizManager lets you grade tests quickly and accurately, and true/false, multiple choice, and short answer questions can all be graded automatically. The Grading window lists student names for a particular quiz. You can view summary results for selected students, as well as the full text of each question, the correct answer (if one was entered when the quiz was created), question remarks, and student responses. Using the Tab key on your computer to skip between data fields allows you to rapidly grade student responses, and a
Comments field provides a space for your notes to the student regarding each question.
Assigning points
If you want to change the number of points assigned to questions,
QuizManager allows you to do so. The Question Points window lets you scroll through the text of all the questions on a selected quiz and enter points for each question. The program automatically converts that to a percentage of total points.
Overview of AlphaQuiz SmartApplet System 9
System requirements
Printing reports
One of the most powerful functions of AlphaQuiz is its ability to print reports and compile test information. In addition to printing corrected quizzes, you can find out the average, mean, and high and low scores. You can see how many times students missed a given question (which can be very useful for critiquing your own tests).
Report types include
• Grading sheet (lets you grade quizzes on hard copy)
• Corrected quiz report (lists questions, correct answers, and scores for handing back to students)
• Quiz summary report (lists student names and scores)
• Statistical report (shows averages, means, high-low scores, and so on)
Exporting quiz scores
QuizManager lets you export quiz scores for use in a computer-based grade book application. You can create a text file containing one student name and quiz score on each line. You can have
QuizManager match the names entered by your students to a roster of names exported from your grade book application.
System requirements
AlphaQuiz requires the following components:
• One of the following USB-capable computers:
•
•
Macintosh running OS 9.0 or higher
PC running Windows 98 (Second Edition) or higher
• AlphaSmart Manager 2 software (for installing the AlphaQuiz
SmartApplet on AlphaSmart devices)
10 AlphaQuiz User’s Guide

To create a new quiz:
1. Start QuizDesigner on your computer. The Quiz Options window appears with the Basic tab selected.

2. Type a name for the quiz in the Quiz Name field. This is the quiz title that appears on the AlphaSmart devices. (This field is required.)
Important: If you don‘t enter a name for the quiz, it appears in the window’s title bar as “untitled.” Be sure to give your quizzes names that will be meaningful to your students.
3. Type your name in the Quiz Author field.
4. Type a password in the Admin Password field. (Passwords can be from one to six characters long.) Using a password preserves the
AlphaQuiz User’s Guide
Composing questions security of student answers, and prevents unauthorized removal of the quiz from AlphaSmart devices.
Note: The administrative password, or “admin password,” also controls access to AlphaQuiz administrative functions on each individual AlphaSmart device (see page 68). It can also be used to override a student-created password. This can be useful if a student must exit and re-enter a quiz, but forgets the password he or she has created; in this case, you can type the admin password to complete the student’s login to the quiz.
5. Finally, enter any notes or comments about the quiz.
6. Click OK when you’re finished.
Composing questions
Once you’ve named a quiz, you can begin writing the quiz questions.
(The Advanced and Prompts tabs in the Quiz Options window are explained later in this manual, on page 35 and page 41.)
Creating Quizzes 23
Composing questions
There is no fixed maximum number of questions, though there are limits to the overall size of each quiz. Size limits are affected by the number of questions, the length of question text, the length of answer text, and the maximum length setting for essay question responses. The Quiz Capacity indicator bar provides an indication of how much space remains for quiz questions.
Each question has three main parts:
• Question text : Use this field at the top of each question window to type the text of your question.
• Question-specific selections : Use this mid-screen section to refine the parameters of your question.
• Question remarks : Remarks can include reminders, notes, or references about a question. You may want to enter the expected correct answer, acceptable alternate answers, or references to a text (scene and line of a play, for example). Your students can’t

Question remarks
There are four types of questions, as described in the following table.
Question type
True/false
When to use this question type
Use true/false questions when you want to compose questions whose statements are unequivocally right or wrong.
Multiple choice
Use multiple choice questions when you want to compose questions with brief, defined possible answers, one or more of which is correct.
Short answer Use short answer questions if you want students to answer with a brief word or phrase. This question type allows students a maximum of eighteen characters in their answers.
Essay Use essay questions when you want students to write a response of one or more paragraphs.
Creating Quizzes 25
Composing questions
There are four ways to add a question to a quiz:
• Use the Add Question button in the Quiz Questions window.
• Select the appropriate Add command from the Question menu.
• Use a keyboard shortcut.
• Click the icon for the question type you want on the
QuizDesigner toolbar (PC only).
Saving your quiz
You should treat a quiz document like any other computer document—save your work at regular intervals. The first time you save a quiz document, you’re prompted for a file name. You can give it the same name as the name you gave earlier (in the Basic tab of the Quiz Options window), but this name is the name of the actual file and can’t be seen by your students. The name you provide when you save the quiz is appended by a .qzz file extension.
Important: If a quiz is currently downloaded to one or more
AlphaSmart devices, do not save over the file containing that quiz until all student responses have been retrieved.
If you need to modify a quiz that has been downloaded to the
AlphaSmart devices, be sure to use Save As to create a file with a new name. (QuizDesigner automatically prompts you to do this.) If you open a quiz document that you saved previously and make changes

Protecting the integrity of a quiz
During certain quizzes, you may want to prevent your students from using other programs on the AlphaSmart devices. For example:
• You may want to disable all other SmartApplets until students complete a given quiz.
• During a math quiz, you may not want your students to be able to use the Calculator SmartApplet.
• During a spelling or essay-writing quiz, you may not want your students to be able to access Spell Check in AlphaWord or other
SmartApplets.
You can set these limits by checking the appropriate boxes on the
Advanced tab of the Quiz Options window.
Creating Quizzes 39
Selecting advanced quiz options
Marking a quiz as “finished”
In order to provide the options described above, the AlphaQuiz
SmartApplet must know when a quiz is in progress. This also provides a further tool to protect the test-taking procedure. If, when designing a quiz, you specify that the quiz must be marked “finished,” student answers cannot be changed after the quiz is completed. This is useful in the following circumstances:
• If time is up and students must turn in the quiz, but some students have left certain questions unanswered, marking the quiz finished prevents these students from declaring later that their unanswered questions were unintentional.
• If a student hands in a quiz, leaves the classroom, and tries to re-enter the quiz later to fill in or change answers, marking a quiz as “finished” prevents these changes.
You can set this limit by checking the Require students to mark quiz as finished box in the Advanced window of the Quiz Options screen.

Chapter 3
Administering Quizzes to
Your Students
Introducing AlphaQuiz SmartApplet
Once you’ve designed quizzes, your students can take them using their AlphaSmart devices. After you download a quiz into their
AlphaSmart devices, they can take the test in the classroom, in the library, or on a field trip.
The basic steps to administering a quiz are
1. The teacher downloads the quiz onto AlphaSmart devices.
2. Students select the correct quiz, enter names and passwords, and take the quiz.
3. The teacher uploads the student quiz responses to a desktop computer.
What is a SmartApplet?
A SmartApplet is an application (such as AlphaQuiz) developed specifically for AlphaSmart devices. Each AlphaSmart device has an applets key. Pressing this key displays a menu of SmartApplets loaded on that AlphaSmart device. Some examples of SmartApplets are AlphaWord (a word processing program), Calculator (for math calculations), and AlphaQuiz.
QuizManager is the component in the AlphaQuiz system that handles downloading quizzes from your computer to AlphaSmart devices.
See“Sending a quiz to connected AlphaSmart devices” on page 83 for detailed instructions.
Administering Quizzes to Your Students 55
Changing font size
Changing font size
You can change the onscreen font size in AlphaQuiz on your Neo.
Changing the font size changes how text appears onscreen while in
AlphaQuiz, letting you work at a screen size that suits your needs. It doesn’t change font attributes associated with the text, so when you send text to your computer or printer, the text itself is plain text.
Note: These steps do not apply to AlphaSmart 3000 devices.
There are four font settings from which to choose:
• System (four lines per screen using a fixed-width font)
• Small (six lines per screen)
• Medium (five lines per screen)
• Large (four lines per screen)
The Very Large (three lines per screen) and Extra Large (two lines per screen) font sizes are listed, but are not supported in AlphaQuiz.
When you choose either the Very Large or Extra Large, the font size will remain the previous selected size.
When you change the font size, that change applies to all files and workspaces in AlphaQuiz and AlphaWord Plus. You can’t set different font sizes for different files. If, for some reason, some of the font sizes are removed from your Neo (either deliberately or accidentally through AlphaSmart Manager), AlphaQuiz defaults to the four-line system font.
56 AlphaQuiz User’s Guide
Changing font size
The following illustrations show examples of the font sizes.
Large (four lines)
Medium (five lines)
Small (six lines)
You can set the font size in one of three ways:
• By using a keyboard command.
• Through the Control Panel SmartApplet (see the Neo User’s Guide for more information about the Control Panel).
• Through AlphaSmart Manager. Note, however, that AlphaSmart
Manager can only reset the font size to the system font (four lines onscreen).
To set the font size:
1. Do one of the following:
•
•
Press ctrl-optiona -F .
Press applets and select Control panel; then, scroll to select
Change default SmartApplet font from the list of options.

2. Scroll to select the font size you want to use, then press enter .
If you changed the font size with the keyboard command, you’re returned to the workspace where you were working previously. If you used Control Panel, you’re returned to the list of settings. Press applets , then select AlphaQuiz, and log into a quiz to view the change in font size.
The system font
The four-line system font is slightly different from the four-line large font setting. The four-line system font is a “fixed-width” or
“monospace” font, and the four-line large font is a proportional font.
With fixed-width fonts, every character and space occupies the exact same width. With proportionally spaced fonts, each character occupies only the space it needs to display that particular character.
So, for example, an m character takes up more space than an i character.

A row of numbered indicators identifies each connected AlphaSmart device. These indicators are
• Black if no AlphaSmart devices are connected, or if the connected
AlphaSmart device has a version of AlphaWord prior to 1.4 installed.
Additionally, some older AlphaSmart 3000s may display black indicators even though they are connected. If this appears to be the case with your devices, be sure to power on those devices before connecting them to the AlphaHub.
• Yellow if the AlphaSmart device does not have AlphaQuiz
SmartApplet installed.
• Red if the AlphaSmart device is not communicating properly through the AlphaHub.

4. In the Send Quiz window, decide what password scheme you want to use and do one of the following:
• If you defined a quiz access password when you created the quiz and want to continue using this access password, do nothing.
•
•
If you want to set a new quiz access password for the devices, type a password in the Access Password field.
Leave this field blank if you don’t want students to have to enter a password.
Note: Changing the quiz access password here does not change the password you originally chose when you created the quiz in
QuizDesigner. Each time you open that quiz in QuizDesigner, the original password remains the same. However, you can change it in QuizManager before downloading as many times as you want.
5. When you are satisfied with the password, click Send. A message appears, telling you that the quiz is downloading. When the download finishes, you’ll see a message saying that the quiz was sent successfully.

Assigning question points
QuizManager gives you the option of assigning points (or weights) to individual questions. The default point assignment for each question created in QuizDesigner is one point. You can use these point assignments in two ways:
• Use the default of one point per question when grading quizzes, adjusting point values after grading only as necessary for fairness
(if, for example, you notice that one question is overly difficult for your students, and you wish to reduce its value in the quiz).
• Assign point values before grading the quiz.

Printing reports
• Quiz Summary Report : lists student names and grades (for teachers only)
• Statistical Report : provides class averages, medians, and score distributions, along with frequency of missed questions
Reports typically contain identifying information at the top, such as the student’s name, class number, the date the quiz was taken, and the score. You can elect to include or exclude these identifiers when creating the report.
Important: If a student or class is selected when you click Reports,
QuizManager creates a report only for that selection (either student or class). If you want the report you choose to include your entire roster, be sure to deselect any class or student by clicking below the last name on the list.
Printing a grading sheet
A grading sheet is helpful if your quiz contains questions that can’t be automatically scored. This printout lets you grade the hard copy and enter the score into QuizManager later. You have several options as to what information to include for all questions: full text of all questions and possible answers, entire student responses, space to handwrite student’s grade, and space to handwrite comments. Frequently Asked Questions
How many students can take a quiz on one AlphaSmart device?
AlphaQuiz SmartApplet can hold responses for up to eight students for all quizzes combined. The eight response sets can be distributed among the loaded quizzes in any way. For instance, if two quizzes are loaded and one of them currently has two sets of responses (that is, two students have taken that quiz), the other quiz may have up to six response sets.
How many different quizzes can be loaded onto an
AlphaSmart device?
Up to four different quizzes can be loaded at one time.
Does the student response to a short answer question have to be spelled correctly? Is it case-sensitive?
If you are using QuizManager’s auto-grading capability for a short answer question, the spelling of the response must exactly match one of the teacher-supplied correct answers for the question to be counted as correct. AlphaQuiz allows the designer of a quiz to supply more than one correct answer for a short answer question to accommodate variations in spelling or multiple correct forms (rain, raindrops). Case-sensitivity can be turned on for any short answer question, or a response can even be restricted to be numeric-only.
What happens if a student skips a question?
AlphaQuiz allows students to answer questions in any order they like.
They can skip any question and return to it later. At the end of the
Frequently Asked Questions 111
112 quiz, the student can view a list of questions with blank answers (by pressing a -B for “blank”), and then jump directly to any question (by pressing a -J for “jump”). The designer of the quiz can determine whether students can exit and re-enter the quiz and still update responses, or if the student must “mark the quiz finished” before exiting.
If I’m using an AlphaHub, and also have an additional available USB port on my computer, can I use both methods of communicating at the same time with QuizManager?
Yes. QuizManager supports AlphaHub communications and a direct
USB connection simultaneously. This allows you to work with up to thirty-one AlphaSmart devices at once with QuizManager.
Can a student spell check an essay question?
Spell Check cannot be used directly within AlphaQuiz, although it can be used in other SmartApplets such as AlphaWord. The person who designs the quiz can enable or disable Spell Check during a quiz.
When enabled, the student can copy text from an essay answer, switch to AlphaWord, and spell check the text there. When disabled, the student cannot spell check text in any SmartApplet. By default,
Spell Check is enabled unless the following settings are checked on the Advanced tab in Quiz Options:
• “Require students to mark quiz as finished” is selected
• “Enable AlphaSmart Spell Checker when taking the quiz” is deselected
• “Enable other AlphaSmart SmartApplets when taking the quiz” is deselected (because Spell Check is available to other
SmartApplets such as AlphaWord)
AlphaQuiz User’s Guide
What do students do when they complete the quiz?
Press a -F (for “finished”) and the applet returns to the quiz menu.
At this point, the AlphaSmart devices can be connected to the
AlphaHub for retrieval of quiz responses.
Can a student take a quiz twice?
This can be done in either of two ways:
• Delete the responses for that quiz from the AlphaSmart device and have the student take the quiz again.
• Have the student log in using a variation of her name (Betty
Smith-2, for example). Otherwise, if the student’s first set of responses is still on the AlphaSmart device and she logs in with the same name, AlphaQuiz will open the first set of responses again.
Is it possible to print a quiz from the teacher’s computer?
AlphaQuiz provides a range of printing options (Reports), including grading sheets, corrected quizzes, quiz summaries, and statistics.
Each of these report types offers options for information to include.
For example, corrected quizzes may include the correct answer and comments added by the teacher, as well as the student's answer. All reports can be printed directly or saved to a file for additional formatting and printing using a word processing program.
Once an essay question is printed and graded, what capabilities are there to make notes on the student response in QuizManager?
AlphaSmart QuizManager provides a Comments field in which notes on the student’s response can be entered. These will print on the corrected quiz as Teacher Commen ts.
Frequently Asked Questions 113
114
How and when do I assign the point values for each question?
Point value assignment is part of the quiz grading process; point values may be assigned to quiz questions at any time after responses have been retrieved. When a quiz is designed, every question has the same “weight”—one point. At any time during the quiz grading process, the point values for any or all questions can be reassigned by clicking the Points button and editing the values next to each question. QuizManager will automatically calculate the new points distribution percentages for the quiz.
Can the grades from quizzes be saved as a spreadsheet file or be copied and pasted directly into a tab-delimited grading program?
Yes. The Export feature in QuizManager creates a tab-delimited file that can be opened with a spreadsheet program or imported into a gradebook program. It can also work with a roster exported from a gradebook package, allowing the teacher to manually correlate mismatched names.
In essay responses, will AlphaQuiz highlight or underline key words that were defined when creating the question?
No. That feature isn’t available in AlphaQuiz.
What happens if the AlphaSmart device is turned off before a quiz is completed? What appears on the screen when it is turned back on? How does a student continue with the quiz?
All entered responses are saved when the AlphaSmart device is turned off. When turned back on, the AlphaSmart device starts up in its default SmartApplet, usually AlphaWord. The student would just press applets , select AlphaQuiz, and then log into the quiz again. All responses are preserved and displayed as if the student had never exited the quiz. The only exception to this rule occurs if the
AlphaSmart device is turned off during a quiz that requires the
AlphaQuiz User’s Guide
student to “mark quiz as finished” and “Block access to all other
SmartApplets during quiz” was selected for the quiz. In this case, the
AlphaSmart device starts up with the message “The other applets including AlphaWord cannot be used because a quiz has not been marked as finished. Press any key to continue…” After pressing a key, the quiz menu appears, and the student can log in to the quiz again at this point.

Troubleshooting
The QuizManager control bar shows a yellow indicator.
A yellow indicator means that the an AlphaSmart device connected to the AlphaHub or by USB cable to the computer does not have the
AlphaQuiz SmartApplet installed. Send any files that you want to save from the AlphaSmart device to your computer, and use
AlphaSmart Manager to install AlphaQuiz on that AlphaSmart device.
The QuizManager control bar shows a black indicator, but there is an AlphaSmart device connected to the related port or direct USB cable.
There are a few reasons why this situation might occur:
• That AlphaSmart device may be powered off, or may have a version of AlphaWord earlier than v1.4 installed. Make sure the
AlphaSmart device is powered on, and check the version number that appears when the device starts up.
• Some older AlphaSmart 3000s need to be powered on before they are connected to either the hub or the computer. If the device is connected but the indicator is black, disconnect the device, turn it on, and then reconnect it.
• Make sure that QuizManager was properly installed. When installed correctly, the installer loads drivers (required software) for AlphaHub and USB communications. On the Macintosh, you can use the System Profiler to check whether the system software detects the AlphaHub.
Troubleshooting 117
118
I have a quiz installed on some AlphaSmart devices, and student responses that I have not yet retrieved, but I have accidentally erased the quiz document from my computer.
Now I am unable to retrieve, or even remove, the responses.
In order to recover the responses, use send on the devices from within the quiz to create a copy of the quiz and responses in an
AlphaWord file, or you can directly print responses. Once you have recovered all responses, use QuizManager’s Delete Quiz function to clear the quiz from the AlphaSmart devices. You can then create a new version of the quiz for future use.
I have a quiz installed on some AlphaSmart devices, but I have accidentally erased the quiz document from my computer and I don’t remember the Admin Password. Now I am unable to remove the quiz from the AlphaSmart devices.
If there are any responses for other quizzes stored on the AlphaSmart devices, use QuizManager to retrieve them. Then, print any response sets for the “lost” quiz on each AlphaSmart device, or save each one as an AlphaWord file and transfer it to your computer for archival
(see page 67 for information on printing and saving to an AlphaWord file). You can now delete and reinstall AlphaQuiz using AlphaSmart
Manager; this will remove all quizzes, including the “lost” one.
Follow these steps:
• On the SmartApplets tab in AlphaSmart Manager, select all the
SmartApplets you want to keep on the devices except for
AlphaQuiz and click Add. Check the Delete SmartApplets that are not in the Install List checkbox. Click the Send List tab and click
Send.
• When AlphaSmart Manager finishes sending the SmartApplets to the devices, open a new send list by choosing File > New Send
List. On the SmartApplets tab, select AlphaQuiz and click Add, and remove the check from the Delete SmartApplets checkbox.
Click the Send List tab and click Send.

Appendix C
Glossary
Automatic grading: QuizManager’s capability to automatically compare student responses to the correct answers defined in a quiz document (.qzz files) for true/false, multiple choice, and short answer questions, and to generate scores.
Comments: Question-specific thoughts, feedback, or information entered for each question and each student in QuizManager’s
Grading window. Can be included on Corrected Quiz reports.
Corrected Quiz: A report designed to be handed back to students. It can include the quiz questions, student responses, correct answers, and teacher comments among other elements.
Create a quiz: Compose test questions using QuizDesigner.
Delete a quiz: To clear or erase a quiz (and any associated student responses) from students’ AlphaSmart devices. The teacher does this using QuizManager.
Delete responses: To remove student responses from AlphaSmart devices, while retaining the quiz itself. This is useful after student responses have been retrieved to make room for additional students to take the quiz.
Finished: An option that can be selected during quiz creation that requires students to mark a quiz as finished. If selected, it prevents students from using their AlphaSmart devices for anything else until the quiz is finished.
119
120
Library: A set of questions contained in an AlphaQuiz library document (.qzl files). A library is not limited to a size that can be sent to an AlphaSmart device, and can serve as a repository of questions from which quizzes can be assembled.
Manual grading: The process of scoring questions that cannot be auto-graded by QuizManager; these are essay questions and short answer questions for which correct answers were not provided when creating the quiz. Questions can be manually graded onscreen in
QuizManager’s Grading window, or may be printed using a Grading
Sheet report and graded as hard copy, after which the scores can be entered into QuizManager for inclusion in summary reports.
Mark as finished: A step that students can be required to perform at the end of a quiz to confirm that they have completed the quiz. This can be thought of as equivalent to “handing in” a quiz on paper, and can be helpful in avoiding later misunderstanding as to whether the student intended to answer more questions. The requirement for this step is defined on the Advanced tab of Quiz Options when you create a quiz using QuizDesigner.
Quiz: The set of questions contained in an AlphaQuiz quiz document (.qzz files) that can be downloaded to an AlphaSmart device and administered using the AlphaQuiz SmartApplet.
Quiz access password: A word or phrase students must type into their AlphaSmart devices to enter a quiz. This password is the same for everyone in the class.
Remarks: Reminders, thoughts, references, or suggestions related to a question, and saved with the quiz for the benefit of other users of the quiz, or for future reference. Remarks are entered by the teacher into QuizDesigner and are not seen during the quiz, but may optionally be included on Corrected Quiz reports.
Responses: Student quiz answers.
AlphaQuiz User’s Guide
Retrieve responses: To transfer student responses from their
AlphaSmart devices into a new or existing saved responses document in QuizManager.
Send quiz: To download a quiz from the teacher’s computer to students’ AlphaSmart devices.
Student password: A personal word or phrase that each student may optionally be required to enter to begin taking a quiz. A student password is created by each student, and it is known only to that student.
