INTRODUCTION “-
“ GENERAL
Congratulations! You now own the industry's first and only Universal Projector Controller/Switcher.
= 4, : Although your system switcher has been factory preset with your requested projector brand software configu-
~ ration, it may easily be changed to make your system switcher compatible with any projector brand you
choose. In the past, system switching could only be accomplished using each individual projector
manufacturer's switcher/controller, but now Extron's system switcher gives you an option---universality.
This user's manual has been written with the basic user in mind. It will tell you everything you need to
know to connect your system switcher to any digitally controlled projector in the market today. If you have
a problem, please contact our Technical Support experts at (714) 491-1500.
EQUIPMENT DESCRIPTION
The Extron System 8 and System 10 switchers are digitally controlled eight or ten input switchers that are
ideally suited for both rental and permanent installations. Any of its inputs can be either RGB with separate
»Hotizontal/ Vertical sync, Composite Sync, Sync on Green, Composite Video or S-Video. The switchers also
“have right and left audio follow video, with an attenuation level control, for any of the previously mentioned
input formats or on BNC connectors (composite video and S-Video only). The built-in microprocessor
provides for digital control of all major graphics projectors. The system switcher can also be remotely
controlled through its manual remote connection or its RS-232 connector. To address large installations
with more than 10 inputs, the switchers can be looped for up to a total of 154 inputs (17 switchers). Fea-
tures like Video Loop Back (VLB) make this switcher adaptable for even the most demanding environments.
CONFIGURATIONS
The System 8/10 Universal Projector Controller/Switchers are supplied in two configurations, both of
Which can be factory preset to control any type or brand of graphics projector.

UNIVERSAL INPUTS
Each input consists of five BNC video/sync connectors and one captive screw audio connector. These inputs
‚can accommodate any combination of RGBS, RGsB, RGBHV, Monochrome Composite, NTSC (PAL), or
.. S-Video. Audio can also be input on any type of input signal (RGB or Video) using either the BNC or
Phoenix brand captive screw terminal connectors; allowing for balanced or unbalanced audio. This innova-
tive universal input style eliminates the need for multiple types of input modules, which results in lower
costs, higher performance, and maximum versatility. The input configuration can be changed from RGB to
Video (or any combination) in a matter of seconds with no additional components required. An audio level
control is located on each input in order to allow the user to balance the audio signal level.

FEATURES (continued)*-
"The switchers are factory preset for the projector brand of your choice and can easily be reconfigured in the
field for any other compatible brand in a matter of minutes by changing a few dip-switches on the switcher's
communications board.
OUTPUTS
All outputs from the switcher are in the same format as the selected input. The switcher has separate outputs
for RGB and Sync, Video, S-Video, and Audio, all of which must be run to the projector (if all are actually
being used). Thus, whenever an input is selected, the projector always receives the proper video signal
format from the switcher.
VIDEO LOOP BACK (VLB)
This unique feature allows the switcher to integrate with either composite-to-RGB decoders or scan doublers.
When the feature is enabled, the Composite or S-Video output of the switcher can be routed througha -
decoder or scan doubler and back into the switcher (input No.8 for System 8 or input No.10 for System 10)
| ‚as, ar | "RGB input. The benefits of this feature include having to use only one decoder or scan doubler for all
the video i inputs rather than using one unit for each video source. |
300 MHz BANDWIDTH
The highest bandwidth ever offered in a video/data switcher allows any and all signals to be passed through
with no loss of resolution. This wide bandwidth is extremely important when using high resolution com-
puter workstations stich as Sun, Silicon Graphics, Apollo, and others.
SWITCHER CONTROL
Each channel of the switcher can be controlled in any one of the following ways:
e Front Panel Buttons. Professional quality backlit push buttons that can be removed to label each input
source.
® Remote Control Connector. Contact closure remote control connector for hard-wired remote control
with tally indication. |
e RS-232 Control Connector. Provides for computer control of switcher or use of 3rd party remote
control system. |
e Infrared Remote. Projector IR (or hard-wired) remote will control switcher via projector. Use the
remote control included with your projector (IR or hard-wired) to control Extron system switchers.
System 8/10 User's Manual « Page 1-3
FEATURES wl
DISPLAY POWER SWITCH
The red Display Power switch controls projector power. This is essential for ceiling-mounted projectors.
VIDEO MUTE SWITCH
“The yellow Video Mute switch blanks the video picture without turning off the projector power.
BALANCED OR UNBALANCED AUDIO
All audio inputs and outputs use 5 mm Phoenix brand captive-screw terminal connectors. This allows for
connection of balanced or unbalanced line audio. |
EASY SYSTEM EXPANSION
Up to 17 svilichers can be looped (daisy-chained) together to provide up to 120 or 154 1 inputs when using
the System 8 or System 10, respectively.
QUALITY CONSTRUCTION
Durable metal enclosure with internal power supply provides long lasting quality under the most stressful
7 -- Conditions The System Switchers are UL approved.
REAR PANEL LED INDICATORS
LED indicators on the rear panel indicate which of the inputs has been selected and which of the output
| signals has been switched to.

SYSTEM 8/10 RACK PANEL INSTALLATION
Turn off input power to the System 8/10 and disconnect power cord.
Place System 8/10 on a clean work area.
Remove the four No.10 attaching screws (item 1) and washers (item 2) from the front panel.
Position the rack panel in front of the System 8/10 (note: rack panel is slightly taller than the
System 8/10). Make sure the nylon shoulder spacers are in place on the back side of the rack
panel assembly. These spacers are in the recessed area between the System 8/10 front panel and
«the back side of the rack panel assembly.
Reinstall the four No.10 corner screws and dress washers in the matching holes of the rack panel
assembly. Align the rack panel on the unit, making sure the top and bottom edges are evenly
distributed, allowing for the difference in size. Tighten screws until the rack panel is butted
firmly against the front of the System 8/10.
= Once the rack panel has been installed, the rubber feet can be removed from the bottom of the
17. System 8/10. To do so, loosen the screw within each rubber foot until it is nearly free and then
a
pull the rubber foot from the unit.
Mount the System 8/10 in the rack.
— + - AUTIC
The ambient temperature of the rack should not exceed 50* C. If forced air
cooling is used, one rack space above and one below the switcher should

-MÚETI-OUTPUT CONNECTION
When the the System 8/10 is used to switch different types of signals, it is important to note that the output
signal will have the save format as the selected input. That is, RGB and Sync (composite or separate H&V)
will exit through the RGB and Sync output. Likewise, NTSC and PAL video signals pass through the
Composite Video output. Therefore, if multiple signal types are used in the same switcher, the same mul-
tiple outputs must be used by the projector or display monitor.

When using a third-party scan-doubler (line-doubler) or Composite/S-Video-to-RGB decoder, the System 8/
10 features VLB. VLB allows the use of a single scan-doubler or decoder with multiple switcher inputs to be
looped back through the System 8/10 and then output as RGB Sync along with all other RGB Sync inputs.
These video configurations are described in detail later in this section.

«y All video input connections to the System 8/10 are made with BNC connectors. Many types of video
Ud + devices (VCR, laserdisc players, etc.), including most computers, do not have BNC video output connec-
“tors. If not, a suitable adapter such as an Extron RGB 300 interface should be used to adapt the device
‘output to the BNC input of the System 8/10. With the proper adapter, the RGB/S signal can be connected
directly to the R, G, B, H, V inputs of the switcher. If the RGB signal is carrying the composite sync on
the green channel, simply connect the RGB cables to the switcher without using the sync channels.
INPUT SELECTION SWITCHES
Each input must have a corresponding video mode. This is done by setting the DIP switches located above
the output connectors. There are two banks of DIP switches, each having 8 (or 10) switches: Each input
has two switches, one in each bank. For example, input #1 uses the left most switch at each bank. For the
video mode shown on this page (RGBS/HV Analog), the No.1 DIP switch of each switch bank should be
DOWN in the RGBS position.

NTSC and; PAL are television or VCR type signals on a single coax cable, which may not have audio on a
separate channel (2 separate channels if stereo). To connect NTSC inputs to the System 8/10 switcher, run
the video cable from. the video source unit to the composite video (G) input of the switcher. Mono-
chrome computers have a single coax output, similar to NTSC. They are connected the same way, al-
‚though the computers seldom have an audio output.

BNCOUTPUT CONNECTORS
The System 8/10 has three sets of BNC output connectors (RGBHV, Composite, and S-Video). Only one
set of output connectors can be selected at a time through the video mode selection mechanism, unless
; the VLB (Video Loop Back) feature is being used. These connectors provide video outputs from the
A ystem 8/10 to the video projector or display monitor. All video output signals have the same format as
the selected video input. That is, RGBHV input signals are output as RGBHV signals, composite input
signals are output as composite signals, and S-Video input signals are output as S-Video signals. Thus, if
multiple input signal types are used, the same multiple output signal types must be output to the projec-
tor or display monitor.

VLB - VIDEO LOOP BACK
“VIDEO LOOP BACK (VLB)
Video Loop Back (VLB) 1s a special “double switching" function performed by the System 8/10 that makes
© the switcher compatible with either composite-to-RGB decoders and scan doublers. When VLB is active
and standard RGB inputs are selected, RGB video signals exit the switcher through the normal RGB
output connector set. When composite video or S-Video signals are selected, they exit the switcher
through their normal composite video or S-Video output connector sets and are routed to the external
decoder or scan doubler. The RGBS output of the decoder or scan doubler is then "looped back" to the
last input (input 8 or 10) of the switcher. RGBS output to the projector exit ‘the switcher through the |
normal RGB output connector set. This allows the System 8/10 to switch only RGB signals 1 to the display
device.
The VLB mode is turned on and off by a toggle switch located berween input connector sets 7 and 8 on
the rear panel of the System 8/10, see diagram. With the switch in the NORM (up) position, the VLB:
mode is disabled. In the VLB (down) position, video loop back is enabled.
- NORMAL MODE
VLB Switch Set to NORM: When composite and S-Video input signals are selected they are routed
directly to the projector (or display monitor) through the normal composite and S-Video output connec-
tor set.
VLB MODE
VLB Switch Set to VLB: When a composite or S-Video input signal is selected, it is first output through
the normal composite or S-Video output connectors to an external (user provided) composite-to-RGB
decoder or scan doubler. The RGBS output of the decoder or scan doubler is "looped back" to the last
input of the System 8/10. The decoded (or scan doubled) RGBS signal is then routed directly to the
projector (or display monitor) through the System 8/10 RGBS output connector set.
VLB RESTRICTIONS
When using the VLB mode with looped switchers, always connect the switchers in a Star Configuration.
The VLB mode cannot be used when switchers are connected in a Daisy-Chain configuration. Only the
master switcher can use the VLB mode---slave switchers cannot. Refer to Chapter 5 for instructions on
looping switchers in the Star Configuration.

RS-232 COMMUNICATIONS
RS-232 COMMUNICATIONS PORT
The RS-232 communications port allows the System 8/10 switcher to be controlled by any standard RS-232
data terminal equipment that complies with all RS-232C specifications. When connected to an RS-232
| terminal, the switcher employs bidirectional communications; making input changes when commanded |
by the terminal and informing the host terminal of input selections made by the front panel buttons or
hardwired remote control.

RS-232 PROTOCOL
The RS-232 protocol and baud rates are selectable by internal switch settings on the communications
board. Rotary switch SW3 is used to configure the baud rate, number of data bits and the parity.
The default protocol is 9600 baud, 8-bits, no parity, 1 stop bit. To select a different protocol, do this:
Step 1: Turn switcher input power OFF. Disconnect power cord.
Step 2: Remove six Phillips head machine screws located at both sides of the top cover; remove
top cover.
Hint
Grasp both sides of the top cover and pull sides outward to "bow" the
top slightly to release tension, then lift straight up away from switcher.

MULTIPLE SWITCHER OPERATION
IN Two Switcher Operation
4. IN Daisy Chain Connections
EN Star Connections
GENERAL
For large installations that require more than eight or ten inputs, System 8/10 switchers can be looped
together. Up to 17 switchers can be looped together, providing a total of 154 inputs (using all System 10
switchers). System 8 and System 10 switchers can be looped together in any combination. There are two
connection schemes suitable for looping switchers—Daisy Chain and Star configurations.
* Däisy!Chain refers to routing the output of one switcher into the last input of a second switcher, and
the output of the second switcher to the input of the third ... etc. The maximum number of inputs
available in the daisy-chain configuration is 154 when using all System 10 switchers (120 when using all
System 8 switchers). The daisy-chain configuration is easy to configure but results in decreased system
bandwidth due to the cascading signal path through multiple switchers. As a further limitation of this
connection scheme, it does not facilitate the use of composite-to-RGB converters or scan doublers.
Star Configuration. In a star connection scheme, the switchers are interconnected in a "master / slave”
configuration. The output of each "slave" switcher is individually routed to the inputs of a single "master"
switcher. The output of the "master", in turn, is routed to the projector or display monitor. The maxi-
mum number of inputs available in the star configuration is 100 when using all System 10 switchers (80
when using all System 8 switchers). The star connection scheme is somewhat more complicated to config-
ure, but provides maximum video bandwidth since the video signal is only routed through two switchers.
Another benefit of the star configuration is the simple connection of composite-to-RGB converters and
scan doublers.
SAVING CONFIGURATIONS TO MEMORY
The System 8/10 has an internal memory to store the current connection scheme (configuration). To save
the configuration to memory, switch No.4 of the ADDRESS DIP switch, located on the rear panel of the
Master Unit, must be set to the Configuration (open) position and the system operated for a minimum of
10 seconds. This provides sufficient time to save the configuration in the EEPROM memory of the
Master Unit. After the configuration is saved, the ADDRESS switch No.4 is set to the Normal (closed)
position. The configuration sequence does not have to be repeated until or unless the connection scheme
changes. Instructions for saving connection schemes are included with each set of configuration instruc-
tions that follow.

TWO SWITCHERS
Two System 8 or System 10 switchers can be looped (connected) together for video switching systems that.
requite more than 8 or 10 inputs. Any two switchers can be looped, but one of the switchers must be
+configured as a “master unit and the other as a "slave" unit. The Master Unit is the unit that provides
video and control signals directly with the projector, with the control system or with both the projector
„ао the control system. The Slave Unit, on the other hand, only provides video signals to the Master
“Unit, which in turn routes the signals to the projector.

Extron System 8/10 switchers have bidirectional (i.e., "talk-listen"), user programmable, projector commu-
nications that duplicate the functions of switchers from Ampro, Barco, Electrohome, GE /NEC, Hughes /
JVC, and Sony. If projector input selection is made by the hard-wired or infrared remote control, the
System 8/10 switcher “listens” to the selection and switches to the proper input. Whenever an input
selection is made at the switcher (by pressing a front panel button, hard-wired remote control, or RS-232
comithynications), the System 8/10 switches the projector to RGBS, S-Video, or composite (as required)
and loads the pre-programmed presets for that input. - |

AMPRO CONNECTION - ONE SWITCHER
: Ampro projectors do not have an extra port for switcher communications. Therefore, the switcher must
— "intercept" all switching commands sent to the projector. This is done by connecting one-of-two types of
EP Comm Adapter to the "HOST" port on the projector rear panel. The two types of adapters are the
"Standard" adapter and the "Type II" adapter.
Standard EP Comm Adapter
See Fig 6-6. The male 15-pin D-Sub connector of the "Y" cable (EP Comm Adapter) connects directly to
the "HOST" port at the rear of the Ampro projector. There must not be any other connections made
between the EP Comm Adapter and the projector. Once the EP Comm Adapter has been attached to the
projector, communications to the projector are interrupted. You must finish connecting the adapter to
the switcher before you can operate the projector.
Step 1 Turn System 8/10 and projector power OFF,
Step'2: Connect the EP-Comm Adapter to the "HOST" port at the rear of the Ampro projector.
Step 3: Connect the CC-50" or (or CC-100") cable from the System 8/10 15-pin HD "PROJECTOR
CONTROL!" port to the 9-pin connector of the EP Comm Adapter. (If you wish to use
your own CC cable, refer to page 6-2 for cable wiring diagram.)
Step 4: Connect the Ampro hard-wired or infrared remote control to the 15-pin connector of the
EP Comm Adapter.
— Step 5: Return System 8/10 and projector to normal operation.
EP Comm Adapter, Type 11
See Fig 6-7. The male 15-pin HD connector of this "Y" cable connects directly to the "PROJECTOR
CONTROL" port of the System 8/10. The 15-pin male connector of the "Y" connects to the "HOST" port
at the rear of the Ampro projector by means of a CC Type II cable. There must not be any other connec-
tions between the EP Comm Adapter and the projector.
Step 1: Turn System 8/10 and projector power OFF.
Step 2: Connect the EP Comm Adapter Type II 15-pin HD male connector to the 15-pin "PROJECTOR
CONTROL" port of the System 8/10.

Frequently asked questions
The Extron System 8/10 switchers support RGB with separate Horizontal/Vertical sync, Composite Sync, Sync on Green, Composite Video, or S-Video inputs.
VLB allows the switcher to integrate with composite-to-RGB decoders or scan doublers. It routes Composite or S-Video signals through an external unit and back into the switcher as an RGB input, allowing a single decoder to serve multiple video sources.
The Extron System switcher can be controlled via front panel buttons, a remote control connector (contact closure), an RS-232 control connector for computer control, or via the projector's infrared or hard-wired remote.
Yes, up to 17 switchers can be looped (daisy-chained) together to provide up to 120 (with System 8) or 154 (with System 10) inputs.
