The horizontal beam can be tilted from –10 to +60 degrees. The transducer converts the electric energy generated by the transmitter circuitry to physical vibrations. These vibrations alter the water pressure, and create an acoustic pulse that is sent into the water. The acoustic signal is transmitted as a beam. The duration of the acoustic pulse, as well as its frequency and shape, are controlled by the system software. The direction and opening angle of the beam is controlled by the transmitter circuitry and the physical properties of the transducer. After the transmission, the transducer works as a "microphone". It converts the water pressure created by the acoustic echoes to electric energy. These weak echo signals are sent to the amplifiers in the receiver circuitry. Note The transducer is covered with a thick red or black protective coating made of a special plastic type. The protective coating is a vital part of the transducer. It is very important that neither this coating nor the internal parts of the transducer are damaged during the handling, installation or cleaning. Any holes and/or scratches in the transducer surface will allow water to penetrate the transducer. If a leak occurs, the transducer must be replaced. The transducer is mounted at the bottom end of the hull unit’s transducer shaft. This allows the transducer to be lowered into the water for operational use, and retracted for protection 110-0003888/A 7 Simrad SY50 Transducer replacement when the SY50 system is turned off. By lowering the transducer into the water, you may also be able to reduce the noise created by the laminar flow of water along the hull. Rules for transducer handling A transducer must always be handled as a delicate instrument. Incorrect actions may damage the transducer beyond repair. A physical blow to the transducer face may easily damage one or more elements. Observe these transducer handling rules: • Do not activate the transducer when it is out of the water. • Do not handle the transducer roughly. Avoid impacts. • Do not expose the transducer to direct sunlight or excessive heat. • Do not use high-pressure water, sandblasting, metal tools or strong solvents to clean the transducer. • Do not damage the outer protective skin of the transducer. • Do not step on the transducer cable. • Do not damage the transducer cable. Avoid exposure to sharp objects. Support information If you need technical support for your SY50 system you must contact your local dealer, or one of our support offices. The safety precautions must be followed at all times during installation and maintenance work. WARNING The SY50 system operates on 24 VDC and/or 230 VAC (50/60 Hz). These voltages are potentially lethal! You must never work alone on high-voltage equipment! This equipment must be installed, adjusted, and serviced only by qualified electrical maintenance personnel familiar with the construction and operation of the equipment and the hazards involved. Failure to observe this precaution could result in bodily injury. Personnel requirements All personnel must be trained in relevant installation and maintenance work. Personal protection Installation personnel must wear suitable work clothes. The work clothes must not contain sufficient static to ignite. Always wear a hard hat and suitable protective footwear while handling heavy objects. Power and ground You must always turn off all power before installation or maintenance work on the SY50 system. Use the main circuit breaker, and label the breaker with a warning sign that informs others that maintenance or installation work is in progress on the system. For safety reasons, two persons must always be present during troubleshooting with power turned ON. All SY50 system units must be properly grounded. First aid Read and understand the applicable first aid instructions related to electric shock. Whenever installation or maintenance work is in progress, it is essential that a first aid kit is available. All personnel must be familiar with the first aid instructions for electrical shock and other personal injuries. Weight The various parts of the system may be heavy. Make sure that the appropriate tools and certified lifting equipment are available. Always wear a hard hat and suitable protective footwear while handling heavy objects. 12 110-0003888/A Replacing the transducer Cables Each electric cable must be handled carefully. This is important to avoid damage to the cable. This is also important to avoid electric shock in the event that the cable is unintentionally connected to a power source. Cabinets Do not open racks or cabinet doors while sailing in rough seas. Doors and/or cabinet parts may suddenly swing open and cause damage or injury. Personnel qualifications Corrective maintenance and hardware modifications can only done by personnel that are certified and authorized. As a minimum, the following certified personnel must be available: • Service engineers If necessary, assistance must be provided by: • Dockyard workers • Ship electricians This publication is intended for qualified service engineers and technicians. You must understand the general principles of maritime electronic equipment. You must also be familiar with computer hardware, signal processing, interface technology and traditional troubleshooting on electronic and mechanical products. We also expect that you have some experience with echo sounder and/or sonar operation. Note Personnel who work with service, replacement of parts and/or corrective maintenance must be authorized by the Kongsberg Maritime support organization. Rules for transducer handling To secure long life and accurate results, the transducer must be handled correctly. A transducer must always be handled as a delicate instrument. Incorrect actions may damage the transducer beyond repair. A physical blow to the transducer face may easily damage one or more elements. Observe these transducer handling rules: • Do not activate the transducer when it is out of the water. 110-0003888/A 13 Simrad SY50 Transducer replacement • Do not handle the transducer roughly. Cleaning the transducer face Whenever opportunity arise, typically when the vessel is dry-docked, the transducer face must be cleaned for shells and other marine growth. • Be careful so that you do not accidentally make cuts or inflict other physical damage to the transducer face. • Remove biological fouling carefully using a plastic brush, a suitable synthetic detergent and fresh water. Biological material which is strongly rooted in the substrate can be removed carefully with a piece of wood or plastic. • Do not use high-pressure water, sandblasting, metal tools or strong solvents to clean the transducer. Painting the transducer face The transducer has not been designed with any protection against biological fouling. Anti-fouling paint may therefore be applied to the transducer face. To minimize the negative acoustical effects the layer of anti-fouling paint must be as thin as possible. Note The anti-fouling paint will reduce the acoustical performance of the transducer. The surface roughness of the transducer substrate and the thickness of the paint may also influence the performance. Kongsberg Maritime cannot be held responsible for any negative consequences of the anti-fouling paint. Because some paint types may be aggressive to the polyurethane in the transducer, consult our list of approved paints. The list can also be found on our website. Observe the relevant instructions and safety information provided by the paint manufacturer. 14 110-0003888/A Replacing the transducer Removing the transducer The transducer is mounted under the transducer flange at the bottom of the transducer shaft. The transducer cable is placed inside the transducer shaft. Prerequisites The following specific tools and consumables are required for this task: • Allen key • Rope The following item may be useful: • Transportation cart Context A cable gland assembly is placed on the top of the transducer shaft. The transducer cable penetrates the cable gland. The cable is terminated in the Power Supply Unit. Note A transducer must always be handled as a delicate instrument. A physical blow to the transducer face may easily damage one or more elements. Do not damage the surface of the transducer shaft. Any dents or scratches in this surface may result in a water leak through the gaskets in the mounting flange. Procedure 1 Make sure that the supply power is disconnected, and that all relevant circuit breakers are disengaged in the ship’s fuse box. 2 Make sure that you have sufficient height between the hull and the dry dock floor. 3 Lowering the transducer a Remove the protective cap on the top cover. b Use the spanner to rotate the hoisting spindle. c Lower the transducer to its bottom position. Note Locate the Lower Limit Switch. It is placed inside the bottom of the gantry.
