Calibration must be taken seriously. To achieve the best results, the calibration must be planned and done carefully. Note The calibration is important as it will reveal inaccuracies related to the transducer alignment. The calibration process will detect and measure such inaccuracies, and feed the information back into the echo sounder system. This will ensure optimal system performance after calibration. The calibration of the current indicator functionality is normally done at sea immediately after leaving dry dock. The calibration process requires you to set up the echo sounder system with specific settings. Data collection is done while using a specific sailing pattern that includes "Williamson" turns. A"Williamson" turn means that you shall steer the boat around with the intent of running alongside the location where the turn pattern was first initiated. The actual calibration process is done after the data collection is completed. This processing is done by the Calibration Wizard. Any adjustments to the echo sounder system files are done automatically. 110-0002398/A 7 Simrad Echo sounder system Instruction manual A suitable location must be selected before the calibration can start. The following requirements must be met: • Depth: 100 metres (Depth variations between 50 and 250 metres are accepted.) • Seafloor: Smooth • Sea conditions: Calm The quality of the calibration and measurements depend on the quality of the sensors connected to the echo sounder system. The basic calibration of scale and yaw is made by comparing the Course Over Ground (COG) and Speed Over Ground (SOG) data from the current indicator and the GPS. The information provided by the calibration is entered into the echo sounder software as operational parameters. This is done automatically. Calibration summary The calibration process for velocity measurements involves several steps. Once the necessary preparations have been made you must collect the calibration data, and then finally process these. Prerequisites The following prerequisites must be met for a successful calibration: • The relevant current indicator hardware has been installed in the echo sounder user interface. • A global positioning system (GPS) is connected to the echo sounder system. The input from the GPS system is enabled and correct. • A heading sensor (gyro compass) is connected to the echo sounder system. The sensor is turned on and in normal operation. • To prevent interference, all other hydroacoustic instruments must be turned off. Optional: A motion reference unit (MRU) is connected to the echo sounder system. The sensor provides data on the KM Binary datagram format. Procedure 1 8 Make the necessary preparations. a Select a suitable location. b Make sure that the echo sounder system is fully operational. c Collect the relevant environmental parameters. 110-0002398/A Introduction d Set up the echo sounder system for velocity measurements calibration. e Create a filing system for the RAW files. The calibration process creates an extensive set of raw data files. You must define and use a standard naming convention for the data files. Each file name must be unique. The file name must contain a number of descriptive terms to identify the main features of the data contained in the file. Such descriptive terms may include: • Location • Vessel name You must also create and use a safe file repository for the data files. A local policy must be adopted to reference and document any additions to - or deviations from this filing system. 2 Start raw data recording. 3 Start collecting calibration data. Important Velocity measurement calibration is always done using previously recorded raw data. You must collect data from four survey lines. The data from each survey line can be provided in any number of *.raw files. 4 Stop raw data recording. 5 Save and process the calibration data. Before you can use the echo sounder system you must obtain a "license string" and install it on your computer. Without a license you will not be able to communicate with the transceiver. You need a second software license to record raw data. The second software license is time limited for this specific purpose. Prerequisites This procedure is only valid for calibration of your echo sounder system. The software license for ordinary use of the echo sounder system is installed. Context The software license is a 32 character hexadecimal string based on the transceiver’s serial number. It defines several key parameters that control the functionality and behaviour of the transceiver(s) you use. Note Once you receive your software license string(s), do not lose them. We suggest that you copy the information into a text file (for example Notepad), and add relevant information. Place the text file on the computer desktop, and make sure that backup copies are made. In order to obtain a software license you must contact one of our dealers or distributors. You can also contact our main support office in Norway. Procedure 1 2 Obtain the necessary information about your echo sounder system: a Transceiver serial number b Transducer serial number Send the information to one of our dealers or distributors. You can also contact our main support office in Norway. If necessary, select the license string on the left side, and click the arrow button [>] to move it to the Currently active licenses list. 9 Select Apply and then Close to save all the parameters and close the Installation dialog box. Related topics Preparations, page 12 Calibrating the current velocity measurements, page 29 Functions and dialog boxes, page 37 Selecting the location for current indicator calibration It is important to find the best possible location for the velocity measurement calibration. The seabed should be as smooth as possible. You also need calm sea and enough space for manoeuvring through the recommended sailing pattern. Context If you are unfamiliar with the location we recommend doing a trial run to get information about depth, maximum speed and maximum velocity at the site. Many of the current velocity measurement problems can be solved by simply moving to a better measurement site location. 110-0002398/A 15 Simrad Echo sounder system Instruction manual A Survey line B Minimum depth: 50 m C Recommended depth: 100 m D Maximum depth: 250 m Procedure • Select a suitable location. The following requirements must be met: • Depth: 100 metres (Depth variations between 50 and 250 metres are accepted.) • Seafloor: Smooth • Sea conditions: Calm Related topics Preparations, page 12 Calibrating the current velocity measurements, page 29 Functions and dialog boxes, page 37 Configuring the environmental parameters Environmental parameters such as salinity, sound speed and water temperature all play an important part to present accurate echo data. These parameters are also essential for a successful calibration. Context You must correctly set the sound speed through the water to obtain accurate echoes. Several parameters are required to calculate the correct sound speed value. If these parameters are unknown, use the default value of 1494 m/s. This is a typical mean value for sound speed in salt water. In fresh water we suggest that you set the sound speed value to 1450 m/s. 16 110-0002398/A Preparations Procedure 1 Open the Setup menu. 2 Select Environment. 3 Open the Water Column page. 4 a Specify if you work in fresh or salt water. b Specify a salinity value that fits you current geographical area. Select OK to save the settings and close the dialog box. Related topics Preparations, page 12 Calibrating the current velocity measurements, page 29 Functions and dialog boxes, page 37 Importing the water temperature from the transducer The navigational information on the top bar may include a read-out of the current water temperature. The temperature can be provided by a transducer that offers this functionality. The water temperature is essential for a successful calibration. Prerequisites The echo sounder system is turned on and operates normally. Context When you select the Temperature sensor, you will notice that radio buttons replace the checkbox for some transducers. These enable you to select manual temperature, or a supported transceiver/transducer as the source for temperature measurements. This choice is permitted because selected transducers offer temperature measurements. When choosing the suitable transceiver, a drop-down list with channels supporting these transducer-induced temperature measurements appears. Procedure 1 Open the Setup menu. 110-0002398/A 17 Simrad Echo sounder system Instruction manual 2 On the Setup menu, select Installation. 3 On the left side of the Installation dialog box, select Sensor Configuration. a Under Sensors, select Temperature. b Select Transceiver. c Under Transceiver, select the current indicator transducer. 4 At the bottom of the dialog box, select Apply to save your settings. 5 Close the Installation dialog box. 6 Make sure that the temperature is shown on the top bar. To choose which navigational information to be displayed on the top bar, use the Top Bar check boxes on the General page. This page is located in the Display Options dialog box. Related topics Preparations, page 12 Calibrating the current velocity measurements, page 29 Functions and dialog boxes, page 37 Configuring the sensor priority for current indicator calibration With multiple sensors connected to the echo sounder system, many of them will provide the same datagrams. We cannot expect that these datagrams provide the same information. The Sensor Configuration page allows you to define a datagram priority, so that the information from the "most reliable" sensor is used by the echo sounder system. You can also define manual values in case a sensor is unserviceable, or not installed. Prerequisites This procedure assumes that: • The sensor is physically connected to the Processor Unit using a serial or Ethernet cable. 18 110-0002398/A Preparations • The interface port is set up with the correct communication parameters. • The input from the navigation sensor is defined in the user interface. The relevant interface parameters and physical location properties for the sensor are defined. Context Any information in a datagram, for example, the vessel speed, may be provided in different datagrams from several sensors. Due to several reasons (environmental conditions, installation, configuration, accuracy, etc.), the numerical values provided can be different from one sensor to another. The term datagram has been defined as follows: A self-contained, independent entity of data carrying sufficient information to be routed from the source to the destination computer without reliance on earlier exchanges between this source and destination computer and the transporting network. https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc1594, April 2016 Several sensor are provided on the Sensor Configuration page, one for each type of information. Select the sensor you wish to configure in the Sensor list. For each type, you can define a priority sensor by rearranging the datagrams in a list. You can also define manual values in case a sensor is unserviceable, or not installed. Tip The echo sounder system can communicate with several different sensor types. Use the Sensor Installation page to define which external sensors your echo sounder system will import information from. You must also specify which datagram formats to use. Open the Sensor Installation page in the Installation dialog box. Procedure 1 Open the Setup menu. 2 On the Setup menu, select Installation. 3 On the left side of the Installation dialog box, select Sensor Configuration. 4 Select the sensor you wish to configure in the Sensor list. 5 Select the datagram you want to use 6 Use the two large arrows to move the selected datagram up or down the priority list. 7 Place the following datagrams at the top of each respective list: • Heading: HDT 110-0002398/A 19 Simrad Echo sounder system Instruction manual • Position: GGA • Speed: VTG Avoid the RMC datagram as position input, as it is less accurate than other position datagrams. 8 At the bottom of the dialog box, select Apply to save your settings. 9 Repeat for each sensor interface that you need to set up. 10 Close the Installation dialog box. Related topics Preparations, page 12 Calibrating the current velocity measurements, page 29 Functions and dialog boxes, page 37 Inserting the installation parameters for the global positioning system (GPS) antenna and the transducer The physical location of the global positioning system (GPS) antenna relative to the transducer is required to allow the echo sounder to show the correct navigational information in the echo sounder presentation. If you do not have a motion reference unit (MRU) connected to your echo sounder system, you must establish an alternative origin to be used during the calibration. Prerequisites For accurate ship dimensions you need the detailed vessel drawings. Neither tools nor instruments are required. The echo sounder system is turned on and operates normally. Context When you have several different sensors and transducers on your vessel, and you wish each of them to provide accurate data, you need to know their relative physical positions. The antenna of a position sensor is typically mounted high above the superstructure, while a motion sensor is located close to the vessel’s centre of gravity. Both of these are physically positioned far away from the transducer, which may be located closer to the bow. Very often, the information from one sensor depends on data from an other. It is then important that the relevant measurements are compensated for these relative distances. The origin is the common reference point where all three axis in the vessel coordinate system meet. All physical locations of the vessel’s sensors (radar and positioning system 20 110-0002398/A Preparations antennas, echo sounder and sonar transducers, motion reference units, etc.) are referenced to the origin. In most cases, the location of the vessel’s "official" origin has been defined by the designer or shipyard. This origin is normally identified with a physical marking, and also shown on the vessel drawings. If necessary, other origin locations may be defined for specific products or purposes. We establish an alternative origin on the water line vertically under the GPS antenna for this calibration. Procedure 1 2 If you do not have a motion reference unit (MRU) connected to your echo sounder system: a Define an alternate origin at the water level directly under the GPS antenna. b Measure the relevant distances between the transducer and the alternative origin. c Proceed to step: 3. If you have a motion reference unit (MRU) connected to your echo sounder system: a Use the established Ship origin. 3 Open the Setup menu. 4 On the Setup menu, select Installation. Context Before you start recording, make sure that you have defined where you wish to store the data files. If you wish to save your recorded data on an external hard disk, make sure that it is connected to the computer. The File Setup settings control how and where the recorded files are saved on the hard disk, or on an external storage device. By adding a prefix to the file names you can identify the files you have recorded during a specific trip. You can also define a maximum size of the files. Note The data files will normally become very large. If you wish to record large amounts of data, make sure that you have enough space on your hard disk. The echo sounder system is not provided with unlimited disk capacity. We recommend that you save the data files to an external storage device. Set up the recording parameters before you start the recording. Procedure 1 Open the Operation menu. 2 Select Output. 24 110-0002398/A Preparations Observe that the Output dialog box opens. This dialog box contains a number of pages selected from the menu on the left side. 3 In the Output dialog box, select File Setup. 4 On the File Setup page, define the recording parameters. a Define the output directory for the recorded files. b Define a file name prefix. c Define the maximum amount of bytes to be contained in one data file. Related topics Preparations, page 12 Calibrating the current velocity measurements, page 29 Functions and dialog boxes, page 37 Defining the bottom detection parameters for the calibration Locating the bottom (seafloor) is important for the echo sounder system. The echo sounder system needs this bottom lock to locate the correct depth, and to stay on this depth during operation, even if the depth changes continuously. Context The Bottom Detection settings provide separate limits for minimum and maximum water depth. These depth limits can be used to obtain a bottom lock on the current depth when the echo sounder system transmits. Procedure 1 Ensure you have a stable depth reading for all three ADCP beams. a Open the Depth information pane. b For each beam, verify that the information pane displays a valid depth. c Open the ADCP information pane. 110-0002398/A 25 Simrad Echo sounder system Instruction manual d Verify that speed over ground (SOG) and course over ground (COG) data is provided in the information pane. The measurement is shown as a grey arrow. The length of the arrow indicates the speed. The tip of the arrow indicates the course. The numerical values are shown at the bottom of the information pane. If you are unsure whether this is the case: 2 Open the Active menu. 3 Select Bottom Detection. 4 Set Minimum Depth and Maximum Depth to values fit for the depth at your current location. The Minimum Depth setting eliminates all unwanted bottom detections from the transducer face and down to the depth you have chosen. Note If the Maximum Depth value exceeds 1500 metres the ping rate will be reduced. 5 a Set Minimum Depth to approximately 50% of the expected minimum depth. b Set Maximum Depth to approximately 50% more than the expected maximum depth. Select OK to save the selected settings and close the dialog box. Result If the echo sounder system should loose bottom detection due to air in the water or other disturbances, it will try to relocate the depth within the minimum and maximum depths you have defined. Related topics Calibrating the current velocity measurements, page 29 Functions and dialog boxes, page 37 Collecting data for current indicator calibration Data collection is done while using a specific sailing pattern that includes "Williamson" turns. You must collect data from four survey lines. The data from each survey line can be provided in any number of *.raw files. Before data collection can start the following additional prerequisites must be met: • A suitable location is chosen. 30 110-0002398/A Calibrating the current velocity measurements • All preparations are completed. • The echo sounder system is fully operational. All the specific settings in the user interface are selected. • All raw data recording parameters are specified on the File Setup page. Context Data collection is done while using a specific sailing pattern that includes "Williamson" turns. A"Williamson" turn means that you shall steer the boat around with the intent of running alongside the location where the turn pattern was first initiated. • Sail your vessel in a pattern resembling an "L". • Sail each line in the pattern twice in opposite directions. • Keep a constant speed. • Sail each line with a steady course. The following operating requirements must be met for each survey line: • Vessel speed: 5 ‑ 8 knots • Ping interval: Maximum • Length: 1 ‑ 4 nautical miles • Number of pings: Transmit a minimum of 500 pings on each survey line. Note A specific recording method is required if you do not have a motion sensor (MRU) connected to your echo sounder system. Without a motion sensor you will get large errors when the vessel turns. These errors will reduce the quality of the calibration. To rectify this, stop the recording before each turn, and restart it when the turn has been made. The result will be four lines of recorded data. This ensures no directional bias is introduced. 110-0002398/A 31 Simrad Echo sounder system Instruction manual A Start raw data recording.
