Atlas Copco BBC 34W/WS, BBC 16W/WS Operating and Safety Instructions
The BBC 16W/WS and BBC 34W/WS Pusher leg rock drills are water-flushed and intended for air pressures of 4–6 bar. These rock drills are used in many construction and underground mining applications. They are all-round rock drills suitable for medium and hard rock formations. The rock drills have water flushing and a robust rifle bar rotation mechanism.

34W/WS SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS To reduce risk of serious injury or death to yourself or others, read these safety instructions before operating the machine. Post these safety instructions at work locations, provide copies to employees, and make sure that everyone reads the safety instructions before operating or servicing the machine. Follow all safety instructions given in this manual.All the safety instructions conform to the applicable laws and directives in the European Union. You should also respect any additional national/ regional directives. In countries outside the European Union, the valid local statutes and regulations shall apply. Any additional regional laws and regulations must be observed. Safety and operating instructions Machine and tool operating hazards Warning Sudden or unexpected movement of the machine may occur during operating, which may cause injuries. Furthermore, losing your balance or slipping may cause injury. To reduce risks: Ź Make sure that you always keep a stable position with your feet as far apart as your shoulder width, and keeping a balanced body weight. Ź Stand firmly and always hold on to the machine with both hands. Ź Do not start the machine when it is lying on the ground. Ź Make sure that the handle is clean and free from grease and oil. Safety symbols used The indications Danger, Warning and Caution have the following meanings: Danger Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. Warning Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury. Indicates a situation which, if not avoided, may result in personal injury or damage to the product or other property. Transportation hazard Warning Unintentional start of the machine may cause injury. Ź Keep your hands away from the start and stop device until you are about to start work. Warning The working tool is exposed to heavy strains when the machine is used and after a certain amount of use the tool may break due to fatigue. If the tool breaks, there may be sudden or strong movements. Such sudden or strong movements may cause serious injury. Ź Make sure that you always keep a stable position with your feet as far apart as your shoulder width, and keeping a balanced body weight. Ź Check regularly for wear to the working tool, and check whether there are any signs of damage or visible cracks. Warning Caution The rock drill and the pusher leg are heavy. To avoid personal injuries during transportation to the working area Ź Use a carriage or ask for assistance from a colleague during transport. An incorrect dimension of the working tool’s shank can result in the working tool being lost or is slipping out during operation. A working tool that is lost or slips out can cause personal injury. Ź Before inserting the working tool, make sure that the shank’s dimensions are correct for use in the machine. Ź Working tools without a collar may not be used. © 2007 Atlas Copco Construction Tools AB | No 9800 0627 71b | 2007-09-12 5 Safety and operating instructions BBC 16W/WS 34W/WS Explosion and fire hazard Warning If the tool retainer on the machine is not in the locked position, the tool can be ejected with great force, which can cause serious injury. Ź Once the working tool has been mounted and locked, the locking function must be checked by pulling the working tool sharply outwards. Ź Make sure that the working tool is fully inserted and that the tool retainer is in the locked position before the machine is started. Ź Never point the working tool at yourself or anyone else. Danger If the machine comes in contact with an explosive, an explosion may occur. Explosions may cause serious injury or death. To reduce the risk of explosion: Ź Never use the equipment to drill near any explosives, including dynamite or other explosives in the rock. Ź Make sure that there are no explosives in the rock. Ź Never drill in an old hole. Warning Changing the working tool while the machine is running may cause serious injury. Warning Ź Before changing the tool always stop the machine. Ź Never grab or touch a rotating drill steel. Warning Drilling and working with certain materials can cause sparks, which may ignite explosive gases and cause explosions. Explosions may cause serious injury or death. To reduce such risk of explosion: A compressed air hose that comes loose can lash around and cause personal injury or death. To reduce risks: Ź Check that the compressed air hose and the connections are not damaged. Ź Never operate the machine in any explosive environment. Ź Do not use the machine near flammable materials, fumes or dust. Ź Make sure that there are no undetected sources of gas. Ź Check that all compressed air connections are properly attached. Ź Never attempt to disconnect a compressed air hose that is pressurized. First switch off the compressed air at the compressor and then bleed the machine by activating the start and stop device. Electrical/Concealed object hazards Danger Warning If the drill steel gets caught during operation, the whole machine will start to rotate if you lose your grip on it. This unexpected rotation of the entire machine may cause serious injury. Ź Stand firmly and always hold onto the machine with both hands. The machine is not electrically insulated. If the machine comes into contact with electricity, serious injuries or death may result. Ź To reduce the risk of such injury or death, never operate the machine near any electric wire or other source of electricity. Ź Make sure that the handle is clean and free from grease and oil. Ź Make sure that there are no concealed wires or other sources of electricity. Ź Never drill in an old hole. Warning Warning There is a risk of items getting dragged into or caught by a rotating drill steel. This may cause serious injury. Ź Never grab or touch a rotating drill steel. Ź Avoid wearing clothing that may get caught. If you have long hair, cover it with a hair net. During drilling, concealed wires and pipes constitute a danger that can result in serious injury. Ź Before you start drilling, check the composition of the material you are to work on. Ź Watch out for concealed cables and pipes e.g. electricity, telephone, water, gas and sewage lines etc. Ź If the tool seems to have hit a concealed object, switch off the machine immediately. Ź Make sure that there is no danger before continuing. 6 © 2007 Atlas Copco Construction Tools AB | No 9800 0627 71b | 2007-09-12 BBC 16W/WS 34W/WS Projectile hazard Warning During drilling, splinters or other particles from the worked material may become projectiles and cause personal injury by striking the operator or other persons. Ź Use approved personal protective equipment, including impact resistant safety glasses with side protection, to reduce the risk of being injured by a projectile. Caution During blow-cleaning particles and dirty flushing water can emerge from the drill hole and cause personal injury. Ź Move to the side and cover your eyes before starting to blow-clean the drill hole. Ź Always wear impact resistant eye protection with side protection. Ź Make sure that no co-workers are in range when blow-cleaning. Noise hazard Warning High sound levels may cause permanent hearing loss. Ź Use hearing protection in accordance with occupational health and safety regulations. Silica/Dust hazard Warning Exposure to crystalline silica (sometimes called ‘silica dust’) as a result of drilling, or other activities involving rock, concrete, asphalt or other materials may cause silicosis (a serious lung disease), silicosisrelated illnesses, cancer, or death. Silica is a major component of rock, sand and mineral ores. To reduce silica exposure: Ź Use proper engineering controls to reduce the amount of silica in the air and the build-up of dust on equipment and surfaces. Examples of such controls include: exhaust ventilation and dust collection systems, water sprays, and wet drilling. Make sure that controls are properly installed and maintained. Ź Wear, maintain, and correctly use approved particulate respirators when engineering controls alone are not adequate to reduce exposure below permissible levels. Safety and operating instructions Ź Participate in air monitoring, medical exams, and training programs offered by your employer and when required by law. Ź Wear washable or disposable protective clothes at the worksite; shower and change into clean clothes before leaving the worksite to reduce exposure of silica to yourself, other persons, cars, homes, and other areas. Ź Do not eat, drink, or use tobacco products in areas where there is dust containing crystalline silica. Ź Wash your hands and face before eating, drinking, or using tobacco products outside of the exposure area. Ź Work with your employer to reduce silica exposure at your worksite. Warning Some dust, fumes or other airborne material created during use of the machine may contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Some examples of such chemicals are: Ź Crystalline silica and cement and other masonry products. Ź Arsenic and chromium from chemically-treated rubber. Ź Lead from lead based paints. To reduce your exposure to these chemicals, work in a well ventilated area, and work with approved safety equipment, such as dust masks that are specially designed to filter out microscopic particles. Vibration hazard Warning Normal and proper use of the machine exposes the operator to vibration. Regular and frequent exposure to vibration may cause, contribute to, or aggravate injury or disorders to the operator’s fingers, hands, wrists, arms, shoulders and/or other body parts, including debilitating and/or permanent injuries or disorders that may develop gradually over periods of weeks, months, or years. Such injury or disorder may include damage to the blood circulatory system, damage to the nervous system, damage to joints, and possibly damage to other body structures. If numbness, tingling, pain, clumsiness, weakened grip, whitening of the skin, or other symptoms occur at any time, when operating the machine or when not operating the machine, do not resume operating the machine and seek medical attention. Continued use of the machine after the occurrence of any such symptom may increase the risk of symptoms becoming more severe and/or permanent. Use a minimum hand grip consistent with proper control and safe operation. Additional safety instructions Ź When the percussion mechanism is activated, the only body contact with the machine you should have is your hands on the handle. Avoid any other contact, e.g. supporting any part of the body against the machine or leaning onto the machine trying to increase the feed force. It is also important not to keep the trigger engaged while extracting the tool from the work surface. Ź Machines and accessories must only be used for their intended purpose. Ź Make sure that the working tool is well-maintained, not worn out, and of the proper size. Working tools that are not well-maintained, or that are worn out, or that are not of the proper size result in longer time to complete a task (and a longer period of exposure to vibration) and may result in or contribute to higher levels of vibration exposure. Ź Immediately stop working if the machine suddenly starts to vibrate strongly. Before resuming the work, find and remove the cause of the increased vibrations. Ź Comply with the recommended air-pressure when operating the machine. Either higher or lower airpressure has the potential of resulting in higher levels of vibration. See the "Noise & Vibration Declaration Statement" for the machine, found at the end of these Safety and Operating instructions. Machine modification hazard Ź The machine must not be modified without Atlas Copco's permission. Ź Use only original parts and accessories approved by Atlas Copco. 8 Ź The maximum permissible air pressure for the machine must not be exceeded. Ź Release the start and stop device immediately in all cases of power supply interruption. Ź Always inspect the equipment prior to use. Do not use the equipment if you suspect that it is damaged. Ź Always use your common sense and good judgment. Ź Pay attention and look at what you are doing. Ź Do not use the machine when you are tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol or anything else that may affect your vision, reactions or judgment. Ź Never strike or abuse any equipment. Ź Participate in health surveillance or monitoring, medical exams, and training programs offered by your employer and when required by law. Any machine modification not approved by Atlas Copco may result in serious injuries to yourself or others. Ź Learn how the machine is switched off in the event of an emergency. Ź Participate in safety and training courses. Ź Do not grab, hold or touch the inserted working tool when using the machine. Warning Ź Only qualified and trained persons may operate or maintain the machine. Ź Keep the machine and tools in a safe place, out of the reach of children and locked up. Ź Make sure that all the attached and related equipment is properly maintained. Ź Signs and stickers bearing important information regarding personal safety and care of the machine are supplied with every machine. Make sure that the signs are always legible. New signs and stickers can be ordered from the spare parts list. Ź Make sure that no unauthorised personnel trespass into the working zone. Ź Keep the workplace clean and free from foreign objects. Ź Never point a compressed air hose at yourself or anyone else. Operators and all other persons in the working area must wear protective equipment, including at a minimum: Ź Protective helmet Ź Hearing protection Ź Impact resistant eye protection with side protection Ź Respiratory protection when appropriate Ź Protective gloves Ź Protective boots Service and maintenance Regular maintenance is a prerequisite for keeping the machine safe and effective. Carefully follow the operating instructions. Before undertaking any maintenance or changing the working tool on pneumatic machines, always switch off the air supply and bleed the machine by depressing the start and stop device. Then disconnect the air hose from the machine. Ź Use only authorised parts. Any damage or malfunction caused by the use of unauthorised parts is not covered by Warranty or Product Liability. Ź Change damaged parts immediately. Ź Replace damaged and worn components in good time. Ź For major service to the machine, contact your nearest authorised workshop. Ź When cleaning mechanical parts with solvent, make sure to comply with current health and safety regulations and that there is satisfactory ventilation. Working tools Ź Keep the tools clean and in good condition. Regulary check the working tools, make sure that they are sharp and not worn out. Note! The warning symbol together with the book symbol means that you must read the Safety and operating instructions before using the machine. Design and function 5. The CE mark means that the machine is approved by CE (see the attached CE declaration for further information). Atlas Copco BBC 16W and BBC 34W rock drills are water-flushed and intended for air pressures of 4–6 bar. The rock drills have been designed for the following operations: Atlas Copco Pusher Leg Rock Drills BBC 16W and BBC 34W are used in many construction and underground mining applications. They are allround rock drills suitable for medium and hard rock formations. The rock drills have water flushing and a robust rifle bar rotation mechanism. The pusher leg support helps the operator to lift and feed the rock drill during drilling operation. The pusher leg control is located in the back head of the rock drill. The machines are intended to be used together with the pusher legs BMT 51, ALF 71, ALF 71-1 or ALF 67/80. The rock drills are equipped with a chuck bushing for a 22 mm x 108 mm, hexagonal shank. The machines are equipped with a 25 mm (1”) connection for air and a 12.5 mm (1/2”) connection for water. New decals can be ordered using the spare parts list. The valve directs the air alternately from one side to the other of the piston so that it moves up and down. The piston transmits the energy through the drill steel to the bottom of the hole. The sign shows important information: 1. Type of machine 2. Serial number 3. Check the drilling equipment Check that all of the drilling equipment is in good working order. Check that the impact surface of the drill-steel shank is flat, with no signs of wear. Make sure that the air inlet and exhaust ports are free from obstruction. Check that the flushing holes in the drill steel and drill bit are not blocked, and that the flushing air/ water flows through without obstruction. Check the air filter (located in the air nipple) Make sure that it is clean and not torn or distorted. Ensure that the fittings are tight and leak-proof. The drill steel is turned slightly with each blow by the rifle bar rotation. The rotation is anti-clockwise and is applied on the return stroke of the piston. Flushing Flushing is ducted through two concentric tubes, the outer one for air and the inner one for water. This means that flushing air is provided as soon as the compressed air is switched on. The purpose is to prevent water from entering the percussion mechanism of the rock drill. The first time you use the rock drill 1. Remove the plastic guards Before the rock drill is first used all the plastic guards in the hose nipples, venting holes and rotation chuck should be removed. Warning Always check for damaged or loose hoses and fittings before operation. Whipping hoses can cause serious injury. 2. Blow out the air hose Every day before to use the drill blow out the air hose to clear it of accumulated dirt and moisture. 3. Fill the lubricator with oil Note! Check that the chuck and drill-steel shank are always covered by a film of oil. Note! Always use a recommended lubricant. Lubricant Recommendation Air tool oil Use a mineral-based air tool oil 2. Lubricate After unpacking and installing the tool, pour a liberal amount of lubrication oil in the air connection. The rock drill and pusher leg are lubricated with oil mixed with compressed air, which is taken to the parts that need continuous lubrication. Calibrate the correct air and water pressure Fitting and removing the tool Use the Atlas Copco no. 9090 0550 80 pressure gauge to check the water and air pressure when the rock drill is running. Before fitting the drill steel Air pressure Ensure that the compressor can deliver the required air at 4–6 bar at the tool. Ź High pressure causes rough operation and damage. Ź Low pressure results in a slow drilling speed. Water pressure Use a shank gauge to check that the tool shank is of the correct size and length for the chuck used. The shank must be clean and the tool must be in good condition. Shanks which are chipped, rounded, out of square or too hard on the striking end will operate inefficiently and cause premature piston failure. Inspect the bits: Dull bits will slow down the drilling speed and overstrain the drill mechanism. When changing bits make sure that the new bit is the correct gauge to follow your previous bore. Before drilling check that the flushing hole in the drill steel is not blocked. Fitting the drill steel The pressure gauge is equipped with a needle which is pressed into the hose to measure the pressure inside. 1.Push the retainer outwards in the direction of the arrow, until the front portion of the retainer is able to accommodate the drill steel collar. Note! Make sure that the water pressure is at least 1 bar lower than the air pressure otherwise the water can enter the impact mechanism. Ź Turn the lever anti-clockwise (A) to decrease the feed force. Ź When the feed control lever is in the closed position (A), the pusher leg is vented. 1. Open the main valve for compressed air. 2. Open the cock (4) for the flushing water. 3. Adjust the feed control lever (2) to give a suitable feed force for collaring the hole. 4. Align the rock drill so that the drill steel touches the required collaring point. 5. Move the throttle lever (1) forward a little, which will start the water flushing, the percussion and rotation. Valve pin 6. Collar the hole with reduced feed force. 7. Move the throttle lever (1) fully forward once the drill steel has gained a secure footing in the rock. 8. Adjust the feed force by means of the control lever (2) so that the maximum penetration rate is obtained. Stopping the rock drill Pull the throttle lever (1) backwards, which will stop the percussion, rotation and flushing water. Re-positioning the pusher leg When the valve pin is pushed in, the feed force stops abruptly and the setting on the feed control lever is overridden. The piston rod in the pusher leg retracts automatically. This function is used for example to adjust the height of the rock drill, when rigging up the pusher leg, or when there is a tendency to jam. When the valve pin is depressed, the feed control setting is activated again. 1. Switch off the rock-drill percussion and flushing by means of the throttle lever (1). 2. Depress the valve pin (3), whereupon the piston rod is pulled back into the pusher-leg cylinder automatically. 3. Re-position the pusher leg. 4. Release the valve pin (3), whereupon the piston rod will move outwards again. 5. The feed control lever (2) does not need to be touched throughout this operation. Blow-cleaning the drill hole Caution Move to the side and cover your eyes before starting to blow-clean the drill hole. When blowcleaning, particles and dirty flushing water can emerge at speed from the drill hole. Ź Always wear impact resistant eye protection with side protection to avoid injury. Ź Make sure that no co-workers are in range when blow-cleaning. Safety and operating instructions Maintenance Regular maintenance is a prerequisite for machine safety. Replace damaged and worn components in good time. For a major service to the machine, contact your nearest authorized workshop. Check the machine and tools for wear and damages at regular intervals. Do not use very worn or damaged tools. When cleaning mechanical parts with a solvent, make sure that you comply with current health and safety regulations and ensure that there is sufficient ventilation. Daily maintenance, regular checking of wearing parts and carrying out repairs in good time prevents breakdowns and increases the service life of the machine. Always oil the rock drill and pusher leg well, before you put them into storage. Store in a clean and dry place. Make sure that no foreign matter enters the machine. Protect the chuck using the plastic plug provided with the machine. Alternatively, use a wooden plug or a clean piece of cotton waste. Always hose down and wipe clean the rock drill and pusher leg after use. If powerful blow-cleaning of the drill hole is required, turn the throttle lever (1) fully backwards beyond the stop position (A), (see Controls), to position (F) for extra blowing, whereupon the rock drill stops. This can be done during drilling. When the drill hole is clean, turn the throttle lever forwards again to re-start the rock drill. In the case of long-term storage, pour a quantity of oil directly into the rock-drill's air intake and then turn on the air briefly. This will protect the machine from corrosion. When you have finished drilling Lay down the rock drill on a stone, wooden plank or similar object, so as to prevent drill cuttings and other foreign matter from entering the chuck. Turn off the water pressure before the air pressure. Run the rock drill for a few seconds to clean out water and moisture after the water has been shut off. © 2007 Atlas Copco Construction Tools AB | No 9800 0627 71b | 2007-09-12 15 Safety and operating instructions BBC 16W/WS 34W/WS Differences between original parts and pattern parts Once a shift (after 8 hours of operation) When buying a part, the first thing to do is to verify that the part is an Atlas Copco part. Most parts can be identified. Rock drill parts are normally marked with a part number and the Atlas Copco identity mark which is a circle with a rock drill inside it. In a few cases the part is marked either with the circle only or the part number only. Rubber and plastic parts are not normally marked. Competitors that copy our parts often mark major, expensive parts. Some parts have only the part number, but some of them also have an identity mark in the form of the initials of the name of the manufacturer's name. Part numbers on the pattern parts are mostly stamped by hand which results in irregularities. The part numbers stamped by Atlas Copco are regular and the individual figures are the same size. In addition the depth of the figures and the spacing between the figures in each group are the same. 1. Check the wear in the chuck bushing using the Atlas Copco no. 3091 0038 00 gauge (22 mm). If the wear limit has been exceeded, the drill steel shank will wear more quickly, or become deformed. This will lead to stoppages and increased drill-steel consumption. 2. Check the tightness of the side-bolt nuts. Tighten to a torque of 130 Nm. 3. Check the rock drill's connection to the pusher leg. 4. Check the hoses, couplings and controls for leakage and damage. 5. Check that the rock drill and pusher leg are receiving enough lubrication. Fill the lubricator as necessary. 6. Drain the water separator. 7. Check the air and water pressure. Make sure that the water pressure is at least 1 bar lower than the air pressure. Send the rock drill to a workshop for inspection. The local operating conditions will determine whether or not this is a suitable interval for overhauling the drill. 2. Dismantle and clean the lubricator. Scrapping and waste disposal Used and worn-out machines must be disposed of in such a way that as much of the material as possible can be recycled and the impact on the environment is kept to a minimum. 3. Clean out the water separator. Measures to prevent freezing In low ambient temperatures, ice can form in the machine. This can be avoided if the water in the compressed air is removed. This can be done by equipping the air lines with water separators and drainage points for water condensate. If the rock drill ices up, it must not be heated to melt the ice. Let the ice thaw at room temperature. In extreme conditions it may be necessary to remove the silencer due to ice formation. Note! Do not pour methylated spirits or similar substances into the rock drill, as they will interfere with the lubrication and lead to increased wear. Damage patterns Worn or broken parts must always be studied carefully before they are thrown away. They can give important information about the condition of the drill and about the way it is used and maintained.
