READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS For safe operation, read and understand all instructions before using this product. Follow all safety instructions. Failure to follow all safety instructions listed below, can result in serious personal injury. Do not allow children or untrained individuals to use this unit. Check the work area before each use. Remove all objects such as rocks, broken glass, nails, wire, or line which can be thrown or become entangled in the machine. Always wear eye protection with side shields marked to comply with ANSI Z87.1. Use Safety Glasses – Always use face or dust mask if operation is dusty. Dress Properly – Use rubber gloves and substantial footwear is recommended when working outdoors. Wear heavy, long pants, long sleeves, boots, and gloves. Do not wear loose fitting clothing, short pants, sandals, or go barefoot. Do not wear jewelry of any kind. They can be caught in moving parts. Secure long hair above shoulder level to prevent entanglement in moving parts. Keep children away - Keep all bystanders, children, and pets at least 50 ft. away. Stay alert - Watch what you are doing. Use common sense. Do not operate this unit when you are tired, ill, or under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medication. Do not operate in poor lighting. Keep all parts of your body away from any moving part. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres, such as in the presence of flammable liquids, gases, or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the dust or fumes. To reduce the risk of electric shock, this tool has a polarized plug (one blade is wider than the other) and will require the use of a polarized extension cord. The plug will fit into a polarized extension cord only one way. If the plug does not fit fully into the extension cord, reverse the plug. If the plug still does not fit, obtain a correct polarized extension cord. A polarized extension cord will require the use of a polarized wall outlet. This plug will fit into the polarized wall outlet only one way. If the plug does not fit fully into the wall outlet, reverse the plug. If the plug still does not fit, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper wall outlet. Do not change the equipment plug, extension cord receptacle, or extension cord plug in any way. Avoid body contact with grounded surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges, and refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock if your body is grounded. Avoid Dangerous Environments - Don’t expose trimmers to rain or wet conditions. Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of electric shock. Warning – To reduce the risk of electric shock - Use outdoor extension cords marked W-A, W, SW-A, SOW-A, STW-A, STOW-A, SJW-A, SJTW-A, or SJTOW-A. These cords are rated for outdoor use and reduce the risk of electric shock. Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection should be provided on the circuit(s) or outlet(s) to be used for the gardening appliance. Receptacles are available having built-in GFCI protection and may be used for this measure of safety. Use Right Appliance - Do not force trimmer. Use the correct tool for your application. The correct tool will do the job better and safer at the rate for which it is designed. Don’t Force Appliance – It will do the job better and with less likelihood of a risk of injury at the rate for which it was designed. Do not operate the equipment while barefoot or when wearing sandals or similar lightweight footwear. Wear protective footwear that will protect your feet and improve your footing on slippery surfaces. Do not overreach – Keep firm footing and balance. Overreaching can result in loss of balance. Avoid Accidental Start – Do not carry plugged in appliance with finger on trigger. Be sure the switch trigger is not engaged before plugging in. Do not use tool if switch trigger does not turn it on or off. Any tool that cannot be controlled with the switch trigger is dangerous and must be repaired. Disconnect appliance – Remove trimmer from power source before storing, servicing, changing accessories such as cutting line. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of starting the tool accidentally. Use only identical manufacturer’s replacement parts and accessories. Use of any other parts may create a hazard or cause product damage. Maintain appliance with care - Replace string head if cracked, chipped, or damaged in any way. Be sure the string head is properly installed and securely fastened. Failure to do so can cause serious injury. Follow instructions for lubrication and changing accessories. Inspect cultivator cord periodically and, if damaged, have it replaced. Keep handles dry, clean, and free from grease and oil. Make sure all guards, straps, deflectors and handles are properly and securely attached. Page 3 — English IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS Use only the manufacturer’s 0.080 in. diameter round or twisted replacement line in the cutting head. Do not use any other cutting attachment, for example, metal wire, rope, or the like. To install any other brand of cutting head to this string trimmer can result in serious personal injury. Never operate unit without the grass deflector in place and in good condition. Check damaged parts - Before further use of the tool, a guard or other part that is damaged should be carefully checked to determine that it will operate properly and perform its intended function. Check for alignment of moving parts, binding of moving parts, breakage of parts, mounting and any other conditions that may affect its operation. A guard or other part that is damaged must be properly repaired or replaced by an authorized service center to avoid risk of personal injury. and overheating. To reduce the risk of disconnection of appliance cord from the extension cord during operation, retain extension cord as shown in figure 7. Never use blades, flailing devices, wire, or rope. Unit is designed for line trimmer use only. Use of any other accessories or attachments will increase the risk of injury. Inspect area to be cut. Remove objects (rocks, broken glass, nails, wire, line, etc.) which can be thrown or become entangled in cutting head. Keep the air vents clean and free of debris to avoid overheating the motor. Clean after each use. Stop the unit and disconnect the power source when not in use. Carry the unit with the motor stopped. Store unplugged and out of the reach of children. Do not hang unit so that the switch trigger is depressed. Maintain a firm grip on both handles while trimming. Keep string head below waist level. Never cut with the string head located over 30 in. or more above the ground. Do not use multiple cords. Store idle appliances indoors- When not in use, string trimmer should be stored indoors in a dry, locked place out of the reach of children. Keep the extension cord clear of operator and obstacles at all times. Do not expose cords to heat, oil, water, or sharp edges. Extenstion cord - Make sure your extension cord is in good condition. When using an extension cord, be sure to use one heavy enough to carry the current your product will draw. A wire gauge size (A.W.G.) of at least 14 is recommended for an extension cord 50 feet or less in length. A cord exceeding 100 feet is not recom­mended. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. The smaller the gauge number, the heavier the cord. An undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage resulting in loss of power Do not abuse the cord - Never carry the unit by the cord or yank extension cord to disconnect unit. If the power supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced only by the manufacturer or by an authorized service center to avoid risk. Save these instructions. Refer to them frequently and use them to instruct others who may use this power tool. If you loan someone this power tool, loan them these instructions also. NOTICE: (Without Safety Alert Symbol) Indicates important information not related to an injury hazard, such as a situation that may result in property damage. Some of the following symbols may be used on this product. Please study them and learn their meaning. Proper interpretation of these symbols will allow you to operate the product better and safer. All exposed metal parts are isolated from the internal metal motor components with protecting insulation. Double insulated tools do not need to be grounded. WARNING: The double insulated system is i­ntended to protect the user from shock resulting from a break in the tool’s internal insulation. Observe all normal safety precautions to avoid electrical shock. NOTE: Servicing of a product with double insulation requires extreme care and knowledge of the system and should be performed only by a qualified service technician. For service, we suggest you return the tool to your nearest authorized service center for repair. Always use original factory replacement parts when servicing. ELECTRICAL CONNECTION This product has a precision-built electric motor. It should be connected to a power supply that is 120 volts, AC only (normal household current), 60 Hz. Do not operate this product on direct current (DC). A substantial voltage drop will cause a loss of power and the motor will overheat. If your product does not operate when plugged into an outlet, double-check the power supply. GFCI Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) protection should be provided on the circuit(s) or outlet(s) to be used for the product. Receptacles are available having built-in GFCI protection and may be used for this measure of safety. EXTENSION CORDS See Figure 1. When using a power product at a considerable distance from a power source, be sure to use an extension cord that has the capacity to handle the current the product will draw. An undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage, resulting in overheating and loss of power. Use the chart to determine the minimum wire size required in an extension cord. Only round jacketed cords listed by Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL) should be used. When working outdoors with a product, use an extension cord that is designed for outside use. This type of cord is designated with “W-A” or “W” on the cord’s jacket. Before using any extension cord, inspect it for loose or exposed wires and cut or worn insulation. A proper extension cord is available at an authorized service center. It is possible to tie the extension cord and power cord in a knot to prevent them from becoming disconnected during use. Make the knot as shown in Figure 1, then connect the plug end of the power cord into the receptacle end of the extension cord. KNOW YOUR STRING TRIMMER See Figures 2 - 3. The safe use of this product requires an understanding of the information on the product and in this operator’s manual as well as a knowledge of the project you are attempting. Before use of this product, familiarize yourself with all operating features and safety rules. CORD RETAINER A convenient cord retainer helps keep the extension cord connection secure during string trimmer operation. GRASS DEFLECTOR The trimmer includes a grass deflector that helps protect you from flying debris. LOCK-OUT BUTTON The lock-out button prevents accidental starting. REEL-EASY™ BUMP ADVANCE SYSTEM The Reel-Easy™ Bump Advance System allows easy line advance during trimmer operation. FRONT HANDLE The string trimmer is equipped with a front handle assembly for ease of operation and to prevent loss of control. ASSEMBLY UNPACKING This product requires assembly. Grass Deflector Carefully remove the product and any accessories from the box. Make sure that all items listed in the packing list are included. Reel-Easy™ String Head Operator’s Manual WARNING: WARNING: Do not use this product if any parts on the Packing List are already assembled to your product when you unpack it. Parts on this list are not assembled to the product by the manufacturer and require customer installation. Use of a product that may have been improperly assembled could result in serious personal injury. Inspect the product carefully to make sure no breakage or damage occurred during shipping. Do not discard the packing material until you have carefully inspected and satisfactorily operated the product. If any parts are damaged or missing, please call 1-800-860-4050 for assistance. PACKING LIST Power Head Trimmer Shaft with Pre-installed Pro Cut II Fixed Line String Head If any parts are damaged or missing, do not operate this product until the parts are replaced. Use of this product with damaged or missing parts could result in serious personal injury. WARNING: Do not connect to power supply until assembly is complete. Failure to comply could result in accidental starting and possible serious personal injury. WARNING: Do not attempt to modify this product or create accessories not recommended for use with this product. Any such alteration or modification is misuse and could result in a hazardous condition leading to possible serious personal injury. Front Handle Assembly Page 7 — English ASSEMBLY ATTACHING GRASS DEFLECTOR CAUTION: See Figure 4. Be careful when sliding the two shafts together to avoid pinching your hands or fingers. WARNING: The line cutting blade on the grass deflector is sharp. Avoid contact with the blade. Failure to avoid contact can result in serious personal injury. NOTE: If the button does not release completely in the positioning hole, the shafts are not locked into place. Slightly rotate from side to side until the button is locked into place. Remove bolt, washer, and wing nut from grass deflector. Press the grass deflector onto the bottom of the trimmer shaft as shown. Insert the bolt through the grass deflector and the bracket on the trimmer shaft. Place the washer on the bolt. Place the wing nut on the bolt and tighten securely. CONNECTING THE POWER HEAD SHAFT TO THE TRIMMER SHAFT See Figure 5. WARNING: Be certain the shafts are locked into place before operating string trimmer; check it periodically for tightness during use to avoid possible disconnection of shafts, which could result in serious personal injury. ATTACHING THE FRONT HANDLE See Figure 6. Unplug the string trimmer. Press the front handle onto the power head shaft so that the handle is angled toward the rear handle. Place the front handle along the power head shaft to a position that allows for comfortable operation. WARNING: Never install, remove, or adjust any part of the trimmer while trimmer is plugged in or is running. Failure to stop the motor can cause serious personal injury. Never operate trimmer until it is completely assembled. Slide the bolt through the holes in the front handle. Slide the washer onto the bolt. Place the wing nut onto the bolt and tighten the wing nut securely. Before using the string trimmer, a one-time assembly is required. Unplug the string trimmer. Push in the button located on the bottom of the power head shaft. Align the groove on top of the power head shaft with the ridge inside the opening of the trimmer shaft and slide the two shafts together until the button locks into the positioning hole. WARNING: This string trimmer is designed to use only the provided trimmer shaft and string heads. It is not capable of using other attachments or cutting heads. Attempting to use other attachments or cutting heads could result in serious personal injury. NOTE: If the power head shaft will not fully insert into the trimmer shaft when the button and the positioning hole are aligned, rotate the string head half a turn and try again. Repeat this as necessary until the power head shaft can be fully inserted into the trimmer shaft when the button and positioning hole are aligned. Page 8 — English OPERATION LOCK-OUT BUTTON WARNING: See Figure 9. Do not allow familiarity with products to make you careless. Remember that a careless ­fraction of a second is sufficient to inflict severe injury. WARNING: Always wear eye protection with side shields marked to comply with ANSI Z87.1. Failure to do so could result in objects being thrown into your eyes, resulting in possible serious injury. The lock-out button reduces the possibility of accidental starting. The lock-out button is located on the handle above the switch trigger. The lock-out button must be depressed before you pull the switch trigger. The lock resets each time the trigger is released. STARTING/STOPPING THE TRIMMER See Figure 9. To start the string trimmer: Depress the lock-out button and squeeze the switch trigger. To stop the string trimmer: Release the switch trigger. OPERATING THE TRIMMER WARNING: See Figure 10. Never use blades, flailing devices, wire or rope on this product. Do not use any attachments or accessories not recommended by the manufacturer of this product. The use of attachments or accessories not recommended can result in serious personal injury. Before each use, inspect the entire product for damaged, missing, or loose parts such as screws, nuts, bolts, caps, etc. Tighten securely all fasteners and caps and do not operate this product until all missing or damaged parts are replaced. Please call 1-800-860-4050 or contact an authorized service center for assistance. APPLICATIONS You may use this product for the purpose listed below: WARNING: Motor housing may become hot during operation. Do not rest or place your arm, hand, or any body part against the motor housing during operation. Only hold the unit as shown in Figure 10 during operation with all body parts clear of motor housing. Extended contact with the motor housing could result in burns or other injuries. WARNING: Always position the unit on the operator’s right side. The use of the unit on the operator’s left side will expose the user to hot surfaces and can result in possible burn injury. Trimming grass and weeds from around porches, fences, and decks. CONNECTING TO POWER SUPPLY See Figures 7 - 8. This product is designed with a cord retainer that prevents the extension cord from being pulled loose while using. n Form a loop with the end of the extension cord. n Insert loop portion of extension cord through opening in the bottom of the rear handle and place over cord retainer. n Slowly pull loop against cord retainer until the slack is ­removed. n Plug trimmer into extension cord. NOTE: Failure to remove all excess cord slack from extension cord retainer could result in plug loosening from receptacle. WARNING: To avoid burns from hot surfaces, never operate unit with the bottom of the motor above waist level. Hold the string trimmer with your right hand on the rear handle and your left hand on the front handle. Keep a firm grip with both hands while in operation. String trimmer should be held at a comfortable position with the rear handle about hip height. Always operate string trimmer at full throttle, by fully depressing the switch trigger. If debris becomes wrapped around the string head or shaft, RELEASE THE SWITCH TRIGGER, unplug the unit, and remove the debris. WARNING: NOTICE: Always use cord retainer to properly attach extension cord to string trimmer. Failure to use cord retainer may result in damage to string trimmer and/or extension cord. Always hold the string trimmer away from the body keeping clearance between the body and the product. Any contact with the string trimmer cutting head can result in serious personal injury. Page 9 — English OPERATION INSTALLING REEL EASY STRING HEAD ADVANCING THE LINE MANUALLY See Figure 11. Stop the motor and disconnect from power supply. With the motor stopped and the power supply disconnected, push the spool retainer down while pulling on line(s) to manually advance the line. Remove currently installed string head. Place the Reel Easy string head assembly on the end of the drive shaft. Make sure the hex-shaped opening on the string head assembly seats completely on the drive shaft. Install the spool retainer to secure. Turn the spool retainer clockwise to secure. Remove the plastic seal from the string head assembly. Pull outward on the strings to rotate the spool into the cutting position. Push the spool retainer down while pulling on string(s) to manually advance the string and to check for proper assembly of the string head. ADVANCING LINE USING THE REEL-EASY™ BUMP ADVANCE SYSTEM Line advance is controlled by tapping the string head’s spool retainer on grass while running the string trimmer. Fully depress the switch trigger. Tap string head on ground to advance line. Line advances each time the head is tapped. Several taps may be required until line strikes the cut off blade. Resume trimming. NOTE: If the line is worn too short you may not be able to advance the line by tapping it on the ground. If so, RELEASE THE SWITCH TRIGGER, unplug the unit, and manually advance the line. NOTE: Pro Cut II line cannot be advanced. To replace the line, refer to Installing Line in Pro Cut II String Head later in this manual. CUTTING TIPS See Figure 12. Avoid hot surfaces by always keeping the tool away from your body. (Proper operating position shown in Figure 10.) Keep the trimmer tilted toward the area being cut; this is the best cutting area. The trimmer cuts when passing the unit from right to left. This will avoid throwing debris at the operator. Avoid cutting in the dangerous area shown in Figure 12. Use the tip of line to do the cutting; do not force string head into uncut grass. Wire and picket fences cause extra line wear, even breakage. Stone and brick walls, curbs, and wood may wear line rapidly. Avoid trees and shrubs. Tree bark, wood moldings, siding, and fence posts can easily be damaged by the line. GRASS DEFLECTOR LINE TRIMMING CUT-OFF BLADE See Figure 13. The trimmer is equipped with a line trimming cut-off blade on the grass deflector. For best cutting, advance line until it is trimmed to length by the cut-off blade. Advance the line whenever you hear the motor running faster than normal, or when trimming efficiency diminishes. This will maintain best performance and keep the line long enough to advance properly. Page 10 — English MAINTENANCE WARNING: When servicing, use only identical replacement parts. Use of any other parts could create a hazard or cause product damage. NOTE: Make sure the arrows on the spool are aligned with the eyelets in the string head housing. Push down and hold the spool and housing together while completing the installation. Reinstall the spool retainer to secure. Install line as described in the next section. WARNING: Always wear eye protection with side shields marked to comply with ANSI Z87.1. Failure to do so could result in objects being thrown into your eyes, resulting in possible serious injury. WARNING: Before inspecting, cleaning, or servicing the machine, shut off motor, wait for all moving parts to stop, and disconnect extension cord. Failure to follow these instructions can result in serious personal injury or property damage. GENERAL MAINTENANCE Avoid using solvents when cleaning plastic parts. Most plastics are susceptible to damage from various types of commercial solvents and may be damaged by their use. Use clean cloths to remove dirt, dust, oil, grease, etc. INSTALLING LINE IN REEL EASY STRING HEAD See Figures 16 - 18. Stop the motor and disconnect from power supply. Rotate the spool clockwise as necessary to align the arrows on the spool with the eyelets in the string head housing. Cut one piece of trimmer line 10 ft. long. Insert the line into the eyelet on the string trimmer housing. Push until the end of the line comes out the other side of the string head. Pull the line from the other side until equal amounts of line appear on both sides of the spool. Rotate the spool clockwise to wind the line on the spool until approximately 6 in. of line is showing on each side. Push the spool retainer down while pulling on line(s) to manually advance the line and to check for proper assembly of the string head. INSTALLING PRO CUT II STRING HEAD See Figure 19. Stop the motor and disconnect from power supply. Remove currently installed string head. WARNING: Do not at any time let brake fluids, gasoline, petroleumbased products, penetrating oils, etc., come in contact with plastic parts. Chemicals can damage, weaken or destroy plastic which could result in serious personal injury. Install the string head on the drive shaft until fully seated. You can often make repairs described here. For other repairs, have the trimmer serviced by an authorized service center. See Figure 20. Use only 0.080 in. diameter round or twisted monofilament line. Use quality monofilament replacement line for best performance. SPOOL REPLACEMENT REEL-EASY™ BUMP ADVANCE SYSTEM See Figures 14 - 16. If replacing line only, refer to the next section in this manual. Use only 0.080 in. diameter round or twisted monofilament line. Stop the motor and disconnect from power supply. Hold the string head and unscrew the spool retainer. Remove the empty spool from the string head. NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the string head housing from the drive shaft. Install the spool retainer and turn clockwise. Install line as described in the next section of this manual. INSTALLING LINE IN PRO CUT II STRING HEAD Stop the motor and disconnect from power supply. Gather two of the pre-cut lengths of trimmer line provided or cut two pieces of trimmer line, in 11 in. lengths. Insert the lines into the slots located on the sides of the string head. Line should be pushed in until approximately 1 in. protrudes from the holes on the top of the string head. Remove old line by pulling it from the holes located on the top of the string head. Insert the new spool into the string head. Page 11 — English MAINTENANCE CLEANING THE STRING TRIMMER NOTE: Do not use any strong detergents on the plastic housing or the handle. They can be damaged by certain aromatic oils such as pine and lemon, and by solvents such as kerosene. Stop the motor and disconnect from power supply. Clean dirt and debris from the string trimmer using a damp cloth with a mild detergent.
