The Limbach L 275 E and L 550 E are air-cooled, two-cycle aircraft engines with direct drive. The L 275 E is a two-cylinder, horizontally opposed engine, while the L 550 E is a four-cylinder, horizontally opposed engine. Both engines feature a solid state magneto ignition system and an induction system with two or four carburetor linkages, respectively. The L 275 E comes with a standard propeller hub of 50mm bolt circle and the L 550 E with a 75mm bolt circle.

Frequently asked questions

Unless specified otherwise, the engines are delivered with clockwise rotation, viewed from the propeller side.

The engines require 90 octane fuel mixed with two-cycle oil at a ratio of 1:50 (2%). Synthetic two-stroke oil, such as Castrol TTS or XTS, or equivalent is recommended. Aviation fuel AVGAS 100 LL can be used at high outside temperatures, but the compatibility of the two-stroke oil might lead to excessive carbon buildup.

At full power, a minimum of 400 ltrs/sec for the L 275 E and 800 ltrs/sec for the L 550 E of air is needed for cooling. To reduce temperatures and drag, a pressure cowling is recommended.

An external starter with approximately 1.4kW at 1000rpm is required.

The carburetors have two adjustments: L (low speed) and H (high speed). The basic adjustment is: 1/2 to 3/4 turn open for L and 1 1/2 turn open for H on the L 275 E, and 1 turn open for L and 1 1/2 turn open for H on the L 550 E. Adjust the screws carefully, not more than 1/8 turn per step, and never with the engine running.

Disconnect the spark plug leads, store the engine in a heated and dry place, plug the exhaust and air inlet with oiled rags, and remove the air cleaner element and spark plugs after 3 weeks. Spray oil into both carburetors and spark plug openings while hand-cranking the engine. Reinstall the air cleaner element, spark plugs, and plug the exhaust and air cleaner element again.

User questions

James K.

What are the minimum cooling air requirements for the L 275 E and L 550 E engines at full power?

The L 275 E requires at least 400 liters/second, and the L 550 E requires at least 800 liters/second.

James K.

What is the fuel mixture ratio for the L 275 E and L 550 E engines?

The fuel mixture ratio is 1:50 (one part two-cycle oil to 50 parts gasoline).

James K.

What type of oil is recommended for the fuel mixture?

Castrol TTS or XTS synthetic two-stroke oil, or an equivalent, is recommended. Outboard motor oil should not be used.

What is the fuel consumption of the Limbach 275 EF engine?

The manual does not provide a precise fuel consumption figure. Fuel consumption depends on factors such as carburetor adjustment, engine installation, and propeller selection. The engine uses 90 octane fuel mixed with two-cycle oil at a ratio of 1:50 (synthetic oil) or 25:1 (other two-cycle oils).
