PL EA SE T H IN K B EF OR E YOU PR IN T New Features SMART Sync™ 2010 SMART Sync™ classroom management software allows teachers to monitor and control their students’ computers while facilitating chat, file sharing and group collaboration. SMART Sync 2010 introduces several new features to the software. Wireless Support Improved Performance in Wireless Environments SMART Sync 2010 offers improved support for wireless environments. Teachers and students in wireless environments will notice improved performance and fewer disconnections. Optimization Preferences When you observe, control or broadcast a student’s desktop, SMART Sync now displays the student’s desktop on your screen at a specific image quality and frame rate for optimal network performance. You can adjust the image quality and frame rate for your network or display the student’s desktop at the highest possible image quality and frame rate. 2 | NEW F EAT URES – SMART SYNC 2010 Connecting with Students Expanded Support for Teacher Discovery Each time a student starts SMART Sync Student, he or she can select a teacher to connect to from a drop-down list of teachers currently logged on to SMART Sync Teacher. This feature is referred to as “teacher discovery.” In previous versions, teacher discovery was available only if multicasting was enabled on your school’s network. In SMART Sync 2010, you can use SMART Sync Class List Server to allow students to use teacher discovery if multicasting isn’t enabled. N OTE Using SMART Sync Class List Server to allow teacher discovery doesn’t require you to create SMART School files. Recovery from Disconnections If a student’s computer disconnects from a teacher’s computer while the teacher is observing, controlling or locking the student’s desktop, SMART Sync 2010 automatically resumes observing, controlling or locking the student’s desktop after his or her computer reconnects with the teacher’s computer. In addition, if the student’s computer disconnects while the teacher is transferring a file, SMART Sync 2010 automatically sends the file to the student after his or her computer reconnects. SMART Notebook™ SE Support SMART Notebook SE is a version of SMART Notebook for students that’s part of SMART Classroom Suite™ interactive learning software. Most schools install SMART Notebook SE on their students’ computers but not on their teachers’ computers. Therefore, in previous versions of SMART Sync, you might not have been able to start or close SMART Notebook SE from SMART Sync Teacher or to include SMART Notebook SE in application blocking rules. In SMART Sync 2010, you can start and close SMART Notebook SE from SMART Sync Teacher and include it in application blocking rules even if you don’t have SMART Notebook SE installed on your computer. In addition, SMART Sync 2010 introduces a default application blocking rule that allows you to block all applications on students’ computers except SMART Notebook SE. 3 | NEW F EAT URES – SMART SYNC 2010 Help Like the Help for SMART Notebook collaborative learning software and SMART Response™ interactive response system, the Help for SMART Sync is now online. This allows SMART to make periodic updates and improvements to the Help. In addition, the SMART Sync 2010 Help introduces SMART’s new Help format. This format includes improved search and navigation as well as new features such as favorites and search results filtering. Other Changes Customer Experience Program SMART Sync 2010 includes support for the SMART Customer Experience program. If you choose to participate in this program, SMART Sync sends information to SMART that helps us improve the software for future releases. Integration with the SMART Language Setup Utility You can set the language for SMART Sync Teacher using the SMART Language Setup utility. This creates greater consistency between SMART Sync and other SMART programs while allowing you to set the language for all SMART programs on your computer at a single time. Customizing SMART Sync Student During Installation System administrators can customize the following properties when deploying the SMART Sync Student installation package (MSI file): l If the software starts automatically when the student logs on l How the student connects to the teacher l What the student can do with SMART Sync (ask questions, chat, submit files, and so on) l The student’s ID l The location where shared files will be stored 4 | NEW F EAT URES – SMART SYNC 2010 The SMART Sync Student Configuration Tool is still available if you want to customize these properties after installation or create a SyncClient.ini file to deploy to other student installations. www.smarttech.com/support | www.smarttech.com/contactsupport Support +1.403.228.5940 or Toll Free 1.866.518.6791 (U.S./Canada) ©2010 SMART Technologies ULC.
