Before Installing DV Messenger

To use DV Messenger, it is required that Windows XP is installed in your computer and Windows Messenger 4.5, 4.6 or 4.7 operates correctly.

CANON SOFTWARE LICENCE AGREEMENT

IMPORTANT: READ THIS AGREEMENT CAREFULLY BEFORE CLICKING “YES” AT

THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN AND INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE.

This agreement (“Agreement”) is a legal contract between you, either an individual or entity, and Canon Inc. (“Canon”) governing your use of this software program and “online” or electronic documentation, if any (collectively, the “SOFTWARE”).

BY CLICKING “YES” BELOW, YOU AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS OF THIS

AGREEMENT. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO THE TERMS OF THIS AGREEMENT, YOU

MAY NOT INSTALL OR OTHERWISE USE THE SOFTWARE. IN SUCH CASE, CLICK

“NO” BELOW, CLOSE THIS SET UP PROGRAM AND EXIT THIS SCREEN.

In consideration of the right to use the SOFTWARE, you agree to abide by the terms and conditions of this Agreement.

1.

GRANT OF LICENSE

Canon grants you the personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use (“use” shall mean storing, loading, installing, executing or displaying) the SOFTWARE on a single computer solely for use with Canon’s digital video camcorder products. You may physically transfer the SOFTWARE from one computer to another, provided that the

SOFTWARE is used on only one computer at a time. You shall not install or use the

SOFTWARE on a network, multiple CPU, multiple site arrangement, or any other hardware configuration where the SOFTWARE is accessible to more than one CPU or to more than one user.

You may make one copy of the SOFTWARE solely for backup purposes, or copy the

SOFTWARE onto the permanent storage device (e.g. hard disk) of your computer and retain the original for back-up purposes, provided that you shall reproduce on such backup copy the same copyright notice and other ownership legends exactly as and where they appear on the SOFTWARE as delivered. Any other copying of the

SOFTWARE is a violation of this Agreement.

RESTRICTIONS

You shall not, or allow any third party to, assign, sublicense, sell, rent, lease, loan, convey or otherwise use, transfer, copy, translate, convert to another programming language, alter, modify, decompile or disassemble the SOFTWARE, in whole or in part, except as expressly provided for or granted herein. You shall not remove, obliterate or cancel any copyright notice appearing on the SOFTWARE or on a medium, if any, on which the SOFTWARE is delivered.

OWNERSHIP

All rights, including but not limited to copyrights and trade secret rights, to the

SOFTWARE belong to Canon, its affiliated corporations and third party licensors. Your use of the SOFTWARE is subject to the laws of the United States, and Canada, and other applicable copyright and trademark laws, and nothing in this Agreement constitutes a waiver of the rights of Canon, its affiliated corporations and third party licensors under such laws. You only own the CD-ROM media in which the SOFTWARE is stored. Except as expressly provided herein, no license or right, express or implied, is hereby conveyed or granted by Canon to you for any intellectual property of Canon.

EXPORT RESTRICTIONS

You agree to comply with all export laws and restrictions and regulations of the country involved, and not to export or re-export, directly or indirectly, the SOFTWARE in violation of any such laws and restrictions and regulations, or without all necessary approvals.

SUPPORT AND UPDATE

Neither Canon, nor its subsidiaries, dealers or distributors will be responsible for providing maintenance or support for use of the SOFTWARE. No updates, fixes or support will be made available for the SOFTWARE.

LIMITED WARRANTY AND DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY

It is your responsibility to choose, maintain and match the hardware and software components of your computer system. Thus, Canon does not guarantee uninterrupted service or correction of errors or that the functions or performance of the SOFTWARE will meet your requirements. TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY

APPLICABLE LAW, CANON AND ITS SUPPLIER PROVIDE THE SOFTWARE “AS IS”

WITHOUT WARRANTY OR CONDITION OF ANY KIND, EITHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED

OR STATUTORY. The CD-ROM storing the SOFTWARE, if any, is warranted only against defective material under normal use for a period of ninety (90) days after purchase from an authorized Canon dealer as evidenced by your sales receipt. Your sole remedy for a defective CD-ROM shall be replacement of the same without charge when returned by you at your expense to your point of purchase and proven to be defective upon inspection. The Replacement CD-ROM will be warranted for the remainder of the original ninety-day (90) warranty period of the defective CD-ROM.

This limited warranty does not apply if the failure of the CD-ROM resulted from accident, abuse, or misapplication of the SOFTWARE and shall not extend to anyone other than the original user of the SOFTWARE.

EXCEPT AS SPECIFICALLY SET FORTH HEREINABOVE, CANON, CANON’S

SUBSIDIARIES, DISTRIBUTORS AND DEALERS DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, OR

CONDITIONS, EXPRESS, IMPLIED OR STATUTORY, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED

TO, WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS AS TO DESIGN, QUALITY, MERCHANTABILITY,

FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, OR SYSTEM INTEGRATION.

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, IN NO EVENT

SHALL CANON, CANON'S SUBSIDIARIES AND AFFILIATES, THEIR DISTRIBUTORS

AND DEALERS BE LIABLE FOR ANY LOSS OR DAMAGES WHATSOEVER

(WHETHER KNOWN, FORESEEABLE OR OTHERWISE), INCLUDING WITHOUT

LIMITATION, ANY CONSEQUENTIAL, INCIDENTAL, DIRECT, INDIRECT, SPECIAL,

PUNITIVE, OR OTHER DAMAGES WHATSOEVER (INCLUDING, DAMAGES FOR

LOSS OF PROFITS, BUSINESS INTERRUPTION, LOSS OF CONFIDENTIAL OR

OTHER BUSINESS INFORMATION, LOSS OF PRIVACY, ARISING OUT OF OR IN

ANY WAY RELATED TO THE USE OF OR INABILITY TO USE THE SOFTWARE, THE

PROVISION OF OR FAILURE TO PROVIDE SUPPORT SERVICES, OR OTHERWISE

UNDER OR IN CONNECTION WITH ANY PROVISION OF THIS AGREEMENT, EVEN

IN THE EVENT OF FAULT, TORT (INCLUDING NEGLIGENCE), STRICT LIABILITY,

BREACH OF CONTRACT OR BREACH OF WARRANTY OF CANON OR ANY

SUPPLIER, OR OTHERWISE EVEN IF CANON, CANON'S SUBSIDIARIES OR

AFFILIATES, THEIR DISTRIBUTORS OR DEALERS HAVE BEEN ADVISED OF THE

POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.

NEITHER CANON, NOR ANY OF CANON'S SUBSIDIARIES, DISTRIBUTORS OR

DEALERS SHALL HAVE ANY OBLIGATION TO INDEMNIFY YOU AGAINST ANY

CLAIM OR SUIT BROUGHT BY A THIRD PARTY ALLEGING THAT THE SOFTWARE

OR USE THEREOF INFRINGES ANY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY OF SUCH THIRD

SOME STATES, PROVINCES OR LEGAL JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE

EXCLUSION OF IMPLIED WARRANTIES, OR THE LIMITATION OR EXCLUSION OF

LIABILITY FOR INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, OR PERSONAL

INJURY OR DEATH RESULTING FROM NEGLIGENCE ON THE PART OF THE

SELLER, SO THE ABOVE DISCLAIMERS AND EXCLUSIONS MAY NOT APPLY TO

TERM

This Agreement is effective upon your acceptance hereof by clicking “YES” below and remains in effect until expiration of all copyright interests in the SOFTWARE unless earlier terminated. You may terminate this Agreement by destroying the SOFTWARE including any and all copies thereof. This Agreement shall also terminate without notice to you if you fail to comply with any of the terms of this Agreement. In the event that this Agreement terminates for your failure to comply, you must promptly destroy the

SOFTWARE including any and all copies thereof. In addition, Canon may enforce its other legal rights.

8.

U.S. GOVERNMENT RESTRICTED RIGHTS NOTICE

The SOFTWARE is a “commercial item,” as that term is defined at 48 C.F.R. 2.101 (Oct

1995), consisting of “commercial computer software” and “commercial computer software documentation,” as such terms are used in 48 C.F.R. 12.212 (Sept 1995).

Consistent with 48 C.F.R. 12.212 and 48 C.F.R. 227.7202-1 through 227.7202-4 (June

1995), all U.S. Government end users shall acquire the SOFTWARE with only those rights set forth herein. Manufacturer is Canon Inc./30-2, Shimomaruko 3-chome, Ohtaku, Tokyo 146-8501, Japan.

9.

SEVERABILITY

In the event that any provision of this Agreement is declared or found to be illegal by any court or tribunal of competent jurisdiction, such provision shall be null and void with respect to the jurisdiction of that court or tribunal and all the remaining provisions of this

Agreement shall remain in full force and effect.

10. CONTROLLING LAW

The terms of this Agreement as it relates to purchases of the SOFTWARE in the United

States of America shall be governed and construed in all respects in accordance with the laws and regulations of the State of New York, without reference to choice of law principles. The terms of this Agreement as it relates to purchases of the SOFTWARE in

Canada shall be governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario.

11. ACKNOWLEDGMENT

CLICKING “YES” BELOW AND SUBSEQUENTLY USING THE SOFTWARE, YOU

AGREE THAT YOU HAVE READ THIS AGREEMENT, UNDERSTOOD IT AND AGREE

THAT THIS AGREEMENT IS THE COMPLETE AND EXCLUSIVE STATEMENT OF

AGREEMENT BETWEEN YOU AND CANON CONCERNING THE SUBJECT MATTER

HEREOF AND SUPERSEDES ALL PROPOSALS OR PRIOR AGREEMENTS, ORAL

OR WRITTEN, AND ANY OTHER COMMUNICATIONS BETWEEN YOU AND CANON

RELATING TO THE SUBJECT MATTER HEREOF. NO AMENDMENT TO THIS

AGREEMENT SHALL BE EFFECTIVE UNLESS SIGNED BY A DULY AUTHORIZED

OFFICER OF CANON.

About This Manual

• In this manual, DV Messenger Version 2 is abbreviated as “DV Messenger”.

• In this manual, the operating modes of camcorders are described as following:

- CAMERA mode: Mode for recording video and sound to tape.

- PLAY (VCR) mode: Mode for playing back video and sound recorded on a tape.

- CARD PLAY mode: Mode for playing back images recorded on a memory card.

- NETWORK mode: Mode for connecting to the computer for using DV

Messenger.

• The explanations in this manual refer to camcorders equipped with the

NETWORK mode on the POWER switch of the camcorder. If your camcorder is not equipped with the NETWORK mode, refer to the instructions in parenthesis

(Camcorder without NETWORK mode:).

The connection may not work correctly.

A CD-ROM drive is required to install the software.

USB connection:

 Connect the USB cable directly to one of the computer’s main USB ports.





The interface may not function correctly if the camcorder is connected via a

USB hub.

The connection may not operate correctly if you are using other USB devices, excluding USB mice or keyboards, at the same time. If this occurs, disconnect the other devices from the computer and try reconnecting the camcorder.

Not all operations performed with a connection to a USB 2.0 compatible board can be guaranteed.

DV (IEEE1394) connection:

 Connect the camcorder directly to the computer using a DV (IEEE1394) cable. The connection may not operate correctly if the camcorder is connected via a repeater or other IEEE1394 devices, or if more than one



IEEE1394 device is connected to the computer.

Do not connect another IEEE1394 device while the AV/C Camera Storage

Subunit-WIA Driver is operating. The connection may not operate correctly.

What Can Be Accomplished with the Software

This topic introduces the main feature of the DV Network Software. Please note that available functions depend on the camcorder model. For details, see

Available Functions by Camcorder Models.

- Sharing recorded video.

- Operating the camcorder form the computer.

- Sharing images.

- Capturing still images (Image Capture).

- Remotely accessing the computer (View & Record).

„ Canon USB Video Driver ( 19)

Installing the Canon USB Video Driver allows you to use DV Messenger by connecting the camcorder to the computer using a USB cable.

If your camcorder is listed under category A in Camcorder Categories ( 13), you can also perform the followings by connecting the camcorder to a computer with preinstalled Hi-Speed USB 2.0 using a USB cable.

- Capturing movies from the tape to the computer.

- Recording movies that have been edited on a computer to the tape.

- Converting analog signals from a connected VCR or 8mm camcorder to digital signals and transferring them to the computer. For details, refer to the camcorder instruction manual.

„ AV/C Camera Storage Subunit-WIA Driver ( 20)

Installing the AV/C Camera Storage Subunit-WIA Driver allows you to use DV

Messenger by connecting a camcorder to a computer, both equipped with a DV

(IEEE1394) terminal, with a DV (IEEE1394) cable.

Available functions depend on the camcorder model. Refer to the following tables and identify to which category your camcorder belongs and which functions and drivers can be used with your camcorder.

What Can Be Accomplished with the Software 13

Required Accessories

You need following items for using the Software:

• Digital Camcorder

• The Internet connection and a software that allows you to browse the Net

• USB Cable or DV (IEEE1394) Cable

If your camcorder is not listed under category A or B in Camcorder Categories

( 13), use a DV cable. Check the manual of your computer for which type of

DV cable to use.

If you leave the camcorder turned on for a long time, heat generation may cause damage to the camcorder. Turn off the camcorder after use.

Tapes may be damaged if left in the camcorder for a long time. Do not leave tapes in the camcorder to prevent damage.

If you leave the camcorder turned on for a long time (e.g. when using the View &

Record or Image Capture (interval mode) function), observe the following fire precautions.

- Do not use the camcorder in hot or humid places.

- Do not leave the camcorder exposed to direct sunlight.

- Do not cover the camcorder with blankets or clothes.

- Do not leave the camcorder in a box or tight spaces.

- Do not leave the camcorder outdoors.

Requirements for Using DV Messenger

To use DV Messenger, it is required that Windows XP is installed and Windows

Messenger 4.5, 4.6 or 4.7 operates correctly.

Make sure to confirm the following before installing DV Messenger.

With this procedure, the DV Messenger will be installed and the driver files for the AV/C Camera Storage Subunit-WIA Driver and Canon USB Video Driver will be copied to your computer. The drivers will be installed when you connect the camcorder to the computer. For the installation procedure of the Canon USB

Video Driver, see Installing the Canon USB Video Driver ( 19). For the installation procedure of the AV/C Camera Storage Subunit-WIA Driver, see

Do not connect the camcorder to the computer when installing the DV

Network Software.

DV Messenger can only be installed with Windows Messenger 4.5, 4.6 or

4.7. Download Windows Messenger 4.7 from the Microsoft homepage and update your Windows Messenger if necessary. Please consult Microsoft for details.

Users of Windows XP Professional must first log in as an Administrator to install programs.

Installing the Canon USB Video Driver allows you to use DV Messenger by connecting the camcorder to a computer using a USB cable.

To use the Canon USB Video Driver for using DV Messenger, your camcorder has to be listed under category A or B in Camcorder Categories

( 13).

To use the Canon USB Video Driver for capturing/recording movies, your camcorder has to be listed under category A in Camcorder Categories

( 13), and the camcorder has to be connected to a computer with Hi-

Speed USB 2.0.

Before installing the driver following the procedure below, install the DV

Network Software first to copy the driver files to the computer.

Close any programs that are running before installing the driver.

Do not turn off the camcorder until the driver installation is complete. And do not interrupt the installation.

About the Firewall

The firewall is an important security system that protects your computer by limiting or preventing access by other computers on the Internet. If you disable the function, other computers may be able to access the files on your computer, or write files onto your hard disk. Disable the firewall before using

DV Messenger, and make sure to re-enable the firewall after use.

DV Messenger will not start when you have signed in to Windows

Messenger. In such case, sign out of Windows Messenger first and start DV

Messenger.

Close all programs that are running before starting DV Messenger.

Do not access the memory card using programs such as Windows Explorer while DV Messenger is started.

Do not update Windows Messenger while DV Messenger is started.

Do not connect two or more digital camcorders to the computer.

Do not disconnect the interface cable while DV Messenger is started.

If an anti-virus software is installed on your computer, the firewall of the software may be active. In such case, you need to deactivate its firewall function. For further details, consult your software or computer manufacturer.

If you are using an UPnP-compliant router, you need to install UPnP ( and disable Windows XP’s firewall ( 29).

There are two methods to start a videoconference. You can invite your contact or you can accept an invitation from your contact.

If you connect to the Internet after starting DV Messenger, the connection may fail. Make sure to connect to the Internet first before starting DV

An error message may appear and the communication may not work correctly. In such case, reconfirm your setting in the [Audio Tuning Wizard].

With camcorders equipped with the NETWORK mode, you can easily change the mode of the camcorder from the DVM panel.

Operating the Tape Playback Functions

When you play back a tape on your camcorder, you can send recorded video and sound to your contact. You can also control the playback functions from the DVM panel while monitoring the picture in the [Conversation] window.









You cannot send video or sound recorded in extended recording modes

( SP/ LP). If you play back a tape recorded in extended recording modes, the picture in the [Conversation] window may be distorted.

If your contact fast forwards, rewinds or stops the tape during playback,

Windows Messenger will continue to show the last picture. If the tape is played back again, the playback picture appears.

Depending on the camcorder, Windows Messenger may produce noises such as buzzing sound when you pause playback or use the playback control lever. This is not a malfunction.

Camcorder without NETWORK mode: If you operate the tape using the camcorder buttons or the wireless controller, the display on the DVM panel may not reflect the actual operation for a short time.

Sharing Images (File Transfer)

With camcorders equipped with the file transfer function or the NETWORK mode, you can share still images recorded on a memory card in a camcorder.













Image Sharing can only be used with camcorders equipped with the

NETWORK mode or file transfer function. If the camcorder is connected using a DV cable, the AV/C Camera Storage Subunit-WIA driver contained in the DV Network Software needs to be installed on the computer ( 17).

Image Sharing may not work depending on the Internet connection, file type or file size.

When images are being transferred from your camcorder to the computer of your contact, the DVM panel displays a bar indicating that transfer is in progress. With camcorders without NETWORK mode, make sure that transfer is not in progress when changing the mode of the camcorder.

The image sharing function cannot be used when the Scanner and Camera

Wizard is started. If the computer is set to start the Scanner and Camera

Wizard automatically each time a camcorder is connected to the computer, we recommend to change the setting ( 21).

If the memory card contains numerous images, it may take time until DV

Messenger starts or displays thumbnails.

You cannot connect the camcorder to a computer if the memory card contains more than 1800 images. In this case, use a PC card reader to download images.

Depending on the camcorder model, the card access indicator may continue to flash when the [CARD] control panel is displayed.

Selecting Images for Sharing

Review the contents of the memory card in your camcorder and select the images you wish to share with your contact.

Transferring Images

You can select images from the memory card in the camcorder of your contact and transfer them to your computer.

You cannot transfer files from your contact in the following cases:

- If no memory card is inserted into the camcorder of your contact.

- If the memory card in the camcorder of your contact does not contain any images.

- If your contact has not set any image files for sharing.

- If your contact is in the course of selecting image files for sharing.

Using the Image Capture Function

With camcorders equipped with the NETWORK mode, you can capture still images and save them to the computer.







The Image Capture function can only be used with camcorders equipped with the NETWORK mode.

During Image Capture, the panel display does not change even when you click the or tab. The camcorder cannot be operated either. Wait until recording is complete or press the [Cancel] button and cancel recording.

When you click [Cancel], the images will not be transferred to the computer.

If you are connecting the camcorder using a USB cable, video and sound will not be transferred to the computer while the camcorder is recording a still image. It returns to normal when recording is complete.

In interval mode, the camcorder shuts off automatically when the combination of the number of images and interval exceeds 24 hours.

You need two Windows Messenger accounts (e-mail addresses); one home account and one remote account.

You have to add the remote account to the contact list of the home account and the home account to the contact list of the remote account.

You have to keep camcorder and computer turned on.

Before you can remotely access the camcorder, you have to select the remote account that can access the camcorder.

Capturing/Recording Movies

If your camcorder is listed under category A in Camcorder Categories ( 13), you can perform the followings by connecting the camcorder to a computer with

Hi-Speed USB 2.0 using a USB cable.

Set the camcorder to PLAY (VCR) mode.

- Capturing movies from the tape to the computer.

- Recording movies that have been edited on a computer to the tape.

- Converting analog signals from a connected VCR or 8mm camcorder to digital signals and transferring them to the computer. For details, refer to the camcorder instruction manual.

Above three operations can be performed with Windows Movie Maker 2 (version

2.1.4026.0).







Make sure to connect the camcorder to a computer with Hi-Speed USB 2.0.

Capturing movies from tape to the computer and recording edited movies to the tape using the Canon USB Video Driver will not work when connecting to a computer with USB 1.1 port.

Do not change the position of the POWER switch or TAPE/CARD switch while capturing movies to the computer or recording movies to the tape.

Proper operation is not guaranteed on all editing softwares (including

Windows Movie Maker 2).

Canon camcorder: “Your DV camcorder is not connected correctly” appears on the DVM panel when I connect the camcorder to the computer.

Î If you have a camcorder with NETWORK mode, check if the POWER switch is set to NETWORK.

Î If you have a camcorder without NETWORK mode, make sure the camcorder is connected to the computer using a DV cable.

Videoconferencing

The video picture does not appear in the [Conversation] window of

Windows Messenger even though the video picture is shown on the camcorder's LCD screen.

Î Check if your camcorder is correctly connected to the computer with the

USB cable or DV cable.

Î Windows Messenger may not be able to receive video and sound if you have changed the operating mode of the camcorder during videoconference. Click [Stop Camera] and then [Start Camera] to restart the videoconference.

Î Some Canon camcorders are equipped with an extended recording function ( SP/ LP). The extended recording modes are not supported by

Windows Messenger. If you are using the camcorder in CAMERA mode, make sure that the recording mode is not set to SP or LP in the menu.

If you are using the camcorder in PLAY (VCR) mode, make sure that the playback tape has been recorded in SP or LP mode.

76 Troubleshooting

Î Check if [Camera] is correctly set in the [Audio Tuning Wizard]. Click [Stop

Camera] in the [Conversation] window of Windows Messenger. Reset the setting in the [Audio Tuning Wizard]. Click [Start Camera] to restart the videoconference.

I receive the video picture of my contact in the [Conversation] window of Windows Messenger, but not the sound.

Î If your contact is using a camcorder without NETWORK mode supporting the memory card function, ask if the camcorder is set for recording to a tape (e.g. the TAPE/CARD switch is set to TAPE).

Î Check the position of the speaker volume lever in the [Conversation] window of Windows Messenger. Move the lever to the right until the volume indicator on the right operates.

Î Check if the sound device is set to [Mute] in the [Control Panel].

The video picture of Windows Messenger’s [Conversation] window does not appear smooth.

Î If Windows XP Service Pack 2 and [QoS Packet Scheduler] are installed, the video picture send by your contact may not appear smooth (e.g. the video picture stops and then appears to be fast-forwarded). In such case, uninstall the [QoS Packet Scheduler].

1. From the [Start] menu, select [Control Panel].

4. Open the network properties.

• When you are connecting to the Internet via LAN cable, right-click the [Local

Area Connection] icon under [LAN or High-Speed Internet] and select

[Properties] from the displayed menu. However, when you are connecting your computer directly to an ADSL modem, right-click the icon under

[Broadband] and select [Properties] from the displayed menu.

• When you are connecting via wireless LAN, right-click the [Wireless Network

Connection] icon under [LAN or High-Speed Internet] and select [Properties] from the displayed menu.

• When you are connecting via dial-up analog modem, right-click the icon under

[Dial-up] and select [Properties] from the displayed menu.

5. Select [QoS Packet Scheduler] and click [Uninstall].

• With [Local Area Connection] or [Wireless Network Connection], click the

[General] tab for uninstallation.

• With [Broadband] or [Dial-up], click the [Networking] tab for uninstallation.

6. When uninstallation is complete, click [OK] and restart the computer.

There is an echo on the sound.

Î If you are using speakers, depending on the volume and microphone sensitivity, the sound from the speakers may be picked up by the microphone, producing an echo. Change the direction or volume of the microphone, or move the camcorder away from the speakers. We recommend using headphones instead of speakers.

Cannot set the sound to mute.

Î Sound may still be send to your contact even if the microphone volume lever is moved completely to the left and the volume lever indicates that it is set to mute. Move the lever to the right and back to the left; no sound should be sent to your contact now.

There are anomalous noises when the tape is set to playback pause or played back using playback control.

Î Depending on the camcorder, Windows Messenger may produce anomalous noises such as buzzing sound when you pause playback or use playback control.

Cannot operate the camcorder.

Î If you cannot operate the camcorder of your contact, your contact may not allow remote control.

Î

Î

Check if the camcorder is correctly connected to the computer.

Camcorder without NETWORK mode: If the Canon camcorder is set to

CAMERA mode, some camcorders will enter the demonstration mode after a certain time. During demonstration, you may not be able to operate the camcorder from the DVM panel. Operate the zoom lever on the camcorder

Î to cancel the demonstration.

When your contact has installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 and the [QoS

Packet Scheduler], the connection to your contact may fail, or DV

Messenger may fail when you try to operate your contact’s camcorder. In such case, refer to [The video picture of Windows Messenger’s

[Conversation] window does not appear smooth.] ( 79), and ask your contact to uninstall the [QoS Packet Scheduler].

The DVM panel does not display the operation correctly during frame advance.

Î During frame advance, the camcorder performs the slow playback operation briefly. The DVM panel may therefore display [Slow].

The focus buttons on the DVM panel cannot be operated in CAMERA mode.

Î Camcorder without NETWORK mode: If the Canon camcorder is set to

(Easy Recording) mode, focus cannot be adjusted manually. Set the camcorder to a mode other than the (Easy Recording) mode.

Î If you are using the XL1S, you cannot switch to manual focus on the DVM panel. Set the camcorder to manual focus before using the focus buttons on the DVM panel.

The camcorder turns off during use in CAMERA mode.

Î Camcorder without NETWORK mode: If the Canon camcorder set to

CAMERA mode and a recordable tape is inserted, the camcorder automatically turns off after a certain time to protect the tape and video heads. When using the camcorder in CAMERA mode, unload or writeprotect the tape.

Î With View & Record, the camcorder shuts off automatically after 24 hours.

Î In interval mode of Image Capture, the camcorder shuts off automatically after 24 hours.

Image Sharing

Cannot set image sharing.

Î

Î

There is not memory card in the camcorder.

The memory card does not contain images that can be shared. Images that can be shared are still images in JPEG and movies in Motion JPEG (AVI).

Thumbnails may not appear with images not recorded with a Canon camcorder.

Î Check if the memory card cover is open.

Î If you are connecting via a DV cable, check if an application software using the image transfer function (such as the Scanner and Camera Wizard) is started on the computer. If started, close such application.

Î If you are connecting via a DV cable, check if the window allowing you to select an application program to start is displayed. If displayed, close the window. We recommend setting your computer to not display such window when the camcorder is connected ( 21).

During image transfer, the window indicating the progress does not change.

Î If the size of the image files is big, transferring an image from a memory card to the computer may take time. In such case, the window does not change. The window will change after a while when the transfer starts.

Î If you or your contact is connecting to the Internet using a low speed line such as an analog modem, it may take time until the display changes.

Cannot transfer an image.

Î There is no memory card inserted into your contact’s camcorder.

Î There are no images recorded on the memory card in your contact’s

Î

Î camcorder that can be transferred.

Your contact has not set any images for sharing.

Your contact is setting images for sharing. Wait until your contact has finished.

Î If the memory card cover is open, image transfer may not work. Ask your contact to close the memory card cover.

Î If an application software using the image transfer function (such as

Scanner and Camera Wizard) is started on the computer of your contact, you cannot use the image transfer function. Ask your contact to close such application.

Î If a window for selecting an application to start when connecting the camcorder is displayed on the computer screen of your contact, you cannot use the image transfer function. Ask your contact to close the window.

Images are not correctly displayed in the selection window for image sharing.

Î Images not recorded with your camcorder may not be displayed correctly.

Î An image file exceeding 20 MB will not be displayed.

The sharing settings reset.

Î The setting resets when you change the position of the camcorder's

POWER switch or remove the memory card.

Cannot start the View & Record function.

Î The View & Record function can only be used with Canon camcorders

Î equipped with the NETWORK mode.

You cannot start the View & Record function if you have not set the

Windows Messenger.

Cannot connect with View & Record.

Î You cannot start the View & Record function if you have not set the remote

24 hours have passed since you started the View & Record function. It

Î shuts off automatically after 24 hours.

If the computer to which the remote camcorder is connected is in standby mode, you cannot connect to the remote camcorder. For details on how to change the setting of the computer, please consult the computer

Î manufacturer or Microsoft.

Your Internet provider may change the allocated IP addresses on a regular basis. You cannot connect to the remote camcorder if the IP address changed after you started DV Messenger. Please consult your Internet provider for details.

Windows Messenger

I changed the background image of Windows Messenger, but it does not appear correctly.

Î The image file may be corrupted.

With transparent GIF files, the transparent part may not appear correctly.

Animated GIF files appear with the first scene as a still image.

Cannot end Windows Messenger.

Î Windows Messenger cannot be ended while DV Messenger is started. End

I have uninstalled DV Messenger, but [DV Network Software] is still listed in the [Add or Remove Programs] window.

Î In the [Add or Remove Programs] window, select [DV Network Software] and click [Change/Remove].

- If you do not find the [Scanners and Cameras] icon in the [Printers and

If [Canon Camera Storage Device] appears under the

[Imaging devices] and/or [Other devices] categories, use the following procedures to delete it.

1. Right-click the mouse button on the respective item and select [Uninstall].

Depending on your camcorder model, [Canon USB Video Record] may not be displayed. In such case, delete [Canon USB Video] and [Canon USB

Video Control].

2. In the confirmation dialog, click [OK] and close [System Properties] and

[Device Manager].

Remove all copies of the [Canon Camera Storage Device] icon that appear in the [Other devices] or [Imaging devices] categories, or that appear more than once in one category.

From the [start] menu, select [My Computer] and doubleclick the [C:], [WINDOWS] and [INF] folders in succession.

If the [INF] Folder Is Not Visible in the [WINDOWS] Folder

Use the following procedures to show all files and folders.

1. Click the [Tools] menu and select [Folder Options].

2. Click the [View] tab.

3. In the [Advanced setting] section, set the [Hidden files and folders] category to the [Show hidden files and folders] option.

If [Hide extensions for known file types] is selected, remove its check mark.

Double-click the [Oem*.inf] file.

• A number such as “0” or “1” appears in place of the asterisk

(*) above. You will also find another file called [Oem*.pnf], which will have the same number as the [Oem*.inf] file. The two constitute one set. There may be many file sets starting with “Oem”.

• The Windows Notepad program will start and show the file contents. When uninstalling the

USB Video Driver, click each

[Oem*] file until you find the one that contains [; Canon USB Video

Driver] in its first line.

When uninstalling the AV/C

Camera Storage Subunit-WIA

Driver, click each [Oem*] file until you find the one that contains [;

AV/C Camera Storage WIA driver] in its first line. When you have found the correct file, delete the file set.

1. Close the Notepad window.

2. Right-click the mouse button and select [Delete].

Close all windows and restart the computer.

The uninstall process is complete.

The [Inf] folder contains numerous files that are critical to the computer's operation. Be extremely careful not to delete the wrong files. If you delete the wrong file, you may be unable to restart Windows.
