How to create a Word file to be used in previous versions
1. Open a word document file in 2007 version, and click the Microsoft Office Button and then click Save As
- Word 97-2003 Document in the Save as type list.
2. In the File name box, type a name for the document e.g. Test. Next click on Save.

3. When the file opens in version 2003 the Compatibility Mode is turned on. As this displays next to the
file name.
4. While working on the file some new features wont be available to you from the ribbon. This is
because you can only see the display of commands as available to a user of version 2003. Eg. As
shown below.
Insert – Equation
Page Layout – Themes.
5. To maintain the compability mode while saving the file in version 2007.

6. Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then point to Save As - Word Document in the Save as type list.
7. Select the Maintain compatibility with Word 97–2003 check box. Type a name for the document, and
then click Save.
8. If you do not wish to select. You will get the below notification. Click OK to continue or cancel.
