TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION
The A21 PRC tube welding tools are intended for automatic circumferential joint
welding of tubes.
The water-ccoled tube welding tools are provided with oscillating motion function
(except for PRC 18-40) and automatic arc length control (through control of the arc
voltage = AVC), and they are designed for use with ESAB's equipment for automated
TIG-welding, the PRO-TIG 250, and cooling unit, the OCCI. If a filler wire is re-
quired, the MTC 20 wire feed unit is suitable.

The tube welding tools incorporate a special gripping principle, patented by ESAB,
which facilitates rapid and accurate securing and location of the welding tool on
the pipe. The pair of gripping jaws clamp the tool to the pipe when the securing arm
on the handle is pressed in. The pipe diameter, i.e. the distance between the jaws,
is set by means of a knob, thus automatically centering the tool around the pipe.
During welding, only the ring gear rotates
The ring is powered by a drive unit consisting of a DC motor, pro- vided with a
tachometer generator for maximum speed regulation accuracy. The gene- rator produces
an output voltage proportional to the motor speed. This provides a feedback signal
to the control equipment. The ring gear is disengageable.
The position of the water-ccoled electrode holder in relation to the weld joint must
be centered within the axial oscillating motion range (16 mm). The PRO-TIG 250
control equipment allows for an oscillation of +5 mm, as well as for an axial posi-
tion adjustment during the welding process.
The oscillating motion, produced by a ball screw device, is powered by a drive unit
consisting of a DC gear motor, also equipped with a tachometer generator for signal
feedback.
A control equipment, consisting of a DC gear motor, which through a gear wheel de-
vice will guide the electrode holder with electrode into a position where the proper
arc length is obtained, is used to maintain a constant arc length during welding.
The motor is governed by the terminal voltage, which means that any voltage drop
between the power source and the weld zone will affect the arc length.
INSTALLATION
General
1 PRO-TIG 250 welding rectifier, see instruction manual 332 355-001
2 OCC 1 cooling unit, see instruction manual 154 309-002
3 MTC 20 wire feed unit, see instruction manual 154 432-007
4 Secure the connecting cable (1) in the cable/hose clip (2) and cable/hose guide,
as shown in Fig. 1, in order to prevent it from being burnt by the hot pipe.
5 If required, fit the wire guide (3) and filler wire nozzle (4) included in the
delivery. Adjust the position of the filler wire in relation to the electrode by
means of an Allen key, see Fig. 1
6 For dimensions of the various units, see Fig. 2-5
7
OPERATION
1 Hold the tool with the tongs open across the tube
2 Set the correct tube diameter by means of the adjusting knob (6), keeping the
locking lever in the closed position, as shown in Fig. 1
3 Release the locking lever to open the jaws
4 Turn the knob (6) another 1/4 turn, see Fig. 1
5 Close the jaws again by means of the locking lever
6 Disengage the welding head by means of arm (7) and turn it around about 1.5
turns, as shown in Fig. 1 |
7 The tool is now ready for use
8 After welding, open the jaws by releasing locking lever
MAINTENANCE
1 Lubricate all sliding surfaces with Molykote G Rapid paste.
2 Check that hoses and connections are tight and secure.
