Connecting the Transformer T he 75-watt powersupplyincludedwith this setprovides an easy-to-use, safepower source forAC-powered trains and accessories. ! Plug the wire from the transformer into t heremote lock-on's center port, then plugthe transformer into thewalloutlet. ! Add15-20 drops of smokefluidfrom the includedpipettethroughthesmokestack, thengentlyblow into t hestacktoeliminateany air bubbles in t hefluid. Ifyouchoosenotto primethe unit with fluid,turn the smokeunit switch locatedunder thetender totheOFF position. Running t h e e ngine without a primed smoke unit may causedamage. Plug tenderplugintoboilersocketatthe backofcab. ! Connect thedrawbarbetweentheengineandtender. Look at thebottomof the engine and t enderwhere each will have a color-coded stamp. Iftheymatch you may connect thosetwo pieces;ifnot,don't. Remote Control The r emote andlock-on are designedfor use with moderate powersuppliessuch asthe one included with this set. Itiscompatiblewithvirtuallyanymanufacturer'sengines. STEP STEP STEP Aimremotecontrolatthe roundedsideofthe lock-on sensortosend track.Lockon sensorcanberotated tothe direction you will mostoften signal. Then putthe engine intomotionby firmly pressing the Direction button (hold itfor approximately 1 second) onyourremoteonce. Iftheengine doesnotbegintomoveas soon asyoufirmlypress theDirectionbutton, you may n ot havesent enough voltagetothetracktomakethetrainmove. Press thethrottle u p for a fewmoresecondsuntilthetrainbeginstomove. To increase ordecreasetrackvoltage,and therefore trainspeed,pressthethrottle control rocker switch. Pressingthetopendofthethrottle willincreasevoltage and speed. Pressing thebottom endofthethrottlewilldecreasevoltage andspeed. Theengine will maintainthespeedyousetafteryourelease thethrottle until you press it again tochangethevoltage andspeed. Horn/Whistle - To sound the horn, firmlypress the Horn/Whistle button.The horn will sound for as long asyoucontinue to d e press the button. It will s top when you releasethe button. Bell - Tosoundthebell, firmly press andreleasethe Bell button.To turn thebell off, press andreleasethe Bell button again. The bell will continue t o ringfromthetimeyouturniton until youpress andrelease the button again to turnitoff. Throttle Emergency Stop Pressthe Emergency Stopbuttonand all trains on the trackcontrolled b y t h e remote will stop until you reapply voltage. This isaneasy waytoshutdownyourtrainsat t h e end o f a session or tostop suddenlyifthetrain'spath becomesobstructed. Direction Yourtrainis programmed to start inneutral. The t r ain will always cycle neutral-forward-neutral-reverse with eachpress and releaseof the directionbutton. The engine i s programmed to restart in neutral each time the track voltageis turnedoff for 25 seconds or more. CyclePhases Neutral Reverse Forward Neutral RailKing2-8-0Steam Freight Set withLoco-Sound™ 7 Speed Control M.T.H. engines equipped with Loco-Soundhavespeedcontrolcapabilities thatallow the enginetomaintainaconstantspeedupanddowngradesandaroundcurves,muchlike an automobilecruisecontrol. Youcanaddordropcarsontherun,andtheenginewill maintain thespeedyouset. While theengine isprogrammed tostart withthespeedcontrolfeatureactivated,you can opt to turnit off. This meanstheengine's speed will fall asitlaborsup a hill and increase as it travels downward. It is also affectedbytheadditionorreleasingofcarswhileon the run. To maintain a constant speed whenspeed c ontrol is turnedoff, youneed toadjust track voltage yourself. Toturnspeedcontrolonandoff, put theengineinneutral, then quickly tap the transformer's Whistle button one time thenquickly tap the Bell button two times,allowing approximately ½ second to lapse betweeneachquickbuttonpress. Repeat the1whistle,2 bells codetoreturnitto the other condition. Youwillwantto do this during the initial neutral upon start-up if you ever couplethisenginetoanotherenginethat is not equipped withspeed controlto avoiddamaging the motorsineitherengine. Each time you shut downtheengine completely, it willautomatically turn speedcontrol on. TimingChart ½Sec. Pause Press ½ Sec. Pause Bell Short & Firm Total TimeLaps e : 1 ½ Seconds Press Whistle Short& Firm Place Engineinto Neutral Whistle Bell Bell = Press Bell Short& Firm SpeedControl Repeat to R eturn to N ormalCondition Direction Lock You can lock y o u r engine intoa direction (forward, neutral,or reverse) sothatitwillnot change directions. To do this, put the engine intothedirection you want or intoneutral, to lockitintoneutral,runitataveryslowcrawl(asslowlyasitwillmovewithout halting), andquicklybutfirmlytaptheWhistle button once followedby three quicktapsofthe Bell button,allowing approximately ½ second tolapsebetweeneachquick button press. Theenginewillnotchange direction (including going into neutral) until you repeat the 1 whistle, 3 bells codetoreturntheenginetoitsnormalcondition, even if the engineiskept without power for extended periods of time. Place Engine into Desired Direction 8 Whistle Bell Bell Bell = DirectionLock RepeattoReturn toNormalCondition RailKing2-8-0Steam Freight Set withLoco-Sound™ Proto-Cast and Proto-Dispatch: Whenused withthe remote lock-onincluded in thisset,Loco-Sound equippedengines ™ ™ gain Proto-Cast and Proto-Dispatch features. Proto-Cast: Allowsyou toplayaudiorecordingsthroughyour engine'sspeakers. Youmustsupplytheaudiosource (a small portableCD/tapeplayeris sufficient) a n d a male-to-male mini cable(1/8"plug,like that used for the headsetwithaportableCD/tapeplayer)toconnectyouraudio source to the remote lock-on. To use Proto-Cast ! Plug t h e m ini-cable first into your audio source (usually intotheheadphone jack) ! PlugCableinto the "Audio" p ort on the right side of the remote lock-on. ! Adjust the volume. If engine s ounds keepbreakingthrough therecorded sounds, increase thevolume on theaudiosource. 1/8"plug Proto-Cast + + Proto-Dispatch Proto-Cast Proto-Dispatch: Thisfeature allows y o u t o broadcast your own voice throughyour engine'sspeakers. You must supply themicrophone andaminicable (1/8” plug, like that usedforthe headsetwithaportableCD/tape player) to connectyour microphone tothe remote lock-on. To use Proto-Dispatch ! Mini-cableattached tothemicrophonemustbean1/8” plug. ! Plugthe”Mi c" into the proto-dispatch port on the left side ofthe remotelock-onand speak into themicrophone. 1/8"plug Proto-Dispatch + Proto-Dispatch = Proto-Dispatch Whenthesefeatures are inuse,thelocomotive'sownsounds(enginesoundsand bells, whistles, andhorns) will bemutedsothatonlythe sounds you broadcast will be heard. Because these two features are voiceactivated, there will be a several second delay after youstop speaking intothemicrophone orturnoff the a udio sourcebefore the engine sounds resume.Tostop using thefeature and return to normal operation, unplug the cable from the lock-onjack. RailKing2-8-0Steam Freight Set withLoco-Sound™ 9 Ifusingparalleltrackswith multipleLoco-Sound equippedengines,Proto-Cast and Proto-Dispatchtransmissions from onetrack may be picked upbythe othernearby engines. Ifyouexperience poppingand interference whenusingProto-Cast or Proto-Dispatch,try cleaning thetrackwithdenaturedalcohol as described inthe "Cleaning the Wheels, Tires andTrack" section of thisbooklet. NOTE: M.T.H. does not r e commendusing P r oto-Cast and Proto-Dispatchatthesametime. Manual Volume Control To adjustthevolumeofallsoundsmadebythis engine, turn themaster volume controlknob located under the tender clockwise to increasethe volume andcounter-clockwise to d ecreasethe volume. 10 increase RailKing2-8-0Steam Freight Set withLoco-Sound™ Maintenance Care of the Remote Control To ! ! ! ! ensure trouble-free operation: Do not dropthe remote. It candamage the delicateelectronics inside. Remove batteries beforestoringfor extended periods. Anyattempt by anyone other t hananauthorizedM.T.H.repairperson toopenand repair the handheld t ransmitteror lock-onmayresultindamageandthelossof warranty p rotection. Ifyourtrainrespondsinconsistently, replace o l d b atteries with fresh ones. Do not mixoldandnew batteries. Lubrication Instructions The e ngine should b e oiledand greased inordertorunproperly. Regularly lubricateallsiderodsandlinkagecomponentsand pickup rollers to prevent squeaking. Uselight householdoil,suchasthatfoundin M.T.H.'s maintenance kit. Do not overoil. Use only a drop or twoon each pivot point. LubricateValveGear LubricatePick-UpRollers (DoNotOiltheFlatPartof Pick-UpRollers) DONOT OVER OIL Lubricate SideRods Greasing Instructions The l ocomotive'sinternalgearingwasgreasedatthefactory. Grease engineevery 50 hoursof use or oneyear. Use a lithiumbasedgreaseandfollowthegreasinginstructions. ! Remove t he screw fromthe chassistoopen thegreaseport. ! Insertthe greasetubetipintotheportand squeeze t he tube o nce or twicetoaddgrease tothegearbox. ! Wipeoffanyexcessgreaseand replace t he phillipsscrewsecurely. RailKing2-8-0Steam Freight Set withLoco-Sound™ 11 Cleaning the Wheels, Tires and Track Periodically check the locomotive wheels andpickups for dirt and buildup, whichcan cause poor electrical contact andtraction and prematurelywear outthe neoprenetraction tires. Wheels andtires can be cleaned usingdenatured(not rubbing) alcohol appliedwith a cottonswab. To cleanthetrack, use RailKing TrackCleaning Fluid andaclean rag or denatured(notrubbing) alcohol. Unplug the transformerand wipe the rails of the track,turningtheragfrequentlytoensurethatyouareusingcleancloth onthe rails. Because themanufacturing processleaves a coatingonRealTrax center rail, you shouldcleantherailsafterthe first 30minutesofuse(youmaynotice anelectrical smell duringinitial useas the coating wears off; thisisnormal). Thereafter, keep aneyeonthe track andclean it when it gets dirty to ensure good electrical contact andto lengthen the life ofthe tires. Traction Tire Replacement Instructions Your locomotiveis equippedwithtwo neoprene rubbertraction tires ontherear set of flanged drivers. While thesetiresareextremelydurable, you mayneedtoreplacethemat somepoint. STEP ! Remove the side rods (the rodsthatconnect e ach drivewheeltotheother)from the wheelsinorderto slipthenewtireoverthegrooveddrivewheel. These screwscanbeloosenedwitha 5mm nutdriver. ! Cleanthegrooveusingacottonswabanddenaturedalcohol. STEP ! Make suretheold tire h as been completelyremovedfromthegroovein thedrive wheel,using a razorblade orsmallflatheadscrewdriverto pry a way any remains. ! Cleanthegrooveusingacottonswabanddenaturedalcohol. ! Slip thenewtireontothewheel. You mayfinditusefultousetwosmallflathead screwdrivers tostretch the tireover thewheel. ! Ifyoutwistthetire whilestretchingit overthe wheel,youwillneedtoremove and reinstallthetire. Otherwise yourenginewillwobblewhileoperating. ! Make surethetire isfullyseatedinsidethegroove. Usea razorbladetotrim away any e xcesstirethatdoesn'tseatitselfinside thegrooveproperly. ProtoSmoke® Unit Operation This steam locomotive contains a smoke unit that outputs smoke through thesmokestack ontheboileroftheengine. Thesmoke unit isessentiallyasmallheatingelementand wick that soaksup andthenheatsamineraloil-basedfluidthatemitsa harmless smoke. The s moke is then forcedout ofthestack byasmallelectric fan. Withafeweasymaintenance steps,you should enjoy trouble-freesmoke unit operation for years. ! 12 When preparing to r unthisengine, add 15-20 dropsofsmokefluidthrough the smokestack. We recommend M.T.H.ProtoSmoke,Seuthe,LGB, or LVTS fluids(a RailKing2-8-0Steam Freight Set withLoco-Sound™ small pipette of ProtoSmoke fluidisincluded). Do notoverfillthe unit or the fluidmay leakout and c oat the interiorengine components. Ifyou choose n o t t o addthefluid (or havealready added the fluid but choosetorunsmoke-free),turnoff the smoke unit switchlocated under the tender body. Failure eithertoaddfluidto the unit ortoturnit offmaydamage thesmokeunitheatingelement and/or wicking material. ! Add Add 15-20Drops 15-20Drops SmokeFluid Smoke Fluid Runningthe engine without a primed smoke unit may cause damage ! ! ! When the smoke output while running theengine beginstodiminish, addanother10-15dropsofsmoke fluid or turnthe smoke unit off. When storing the unit for long periods oftime, youmaywanttoaddabout15dropsoffluidto prevent thewickfromdryingout. After removing the engine fromstorage,add another 25dropsoffluid, lettingthe wicksoak upthe fluidfor 15 minutes prior to operation. Ifyouexperience poor orno smokeoutput when thesmoke unitisonandhasfluid,checkthewicktoseeifithas become hard,blackened, andunabsorbent around the heating element. Removethe boilerasshownbelow. Remove thesmoke u n i t i nspection cover fromthe locomotive's body (see right). Afterremovingthe chassis andinspection cover screws, lift theinspectionplate away andinspect the wick. Ifitisdarklydiscoloredand hard,it shouldbe replaced. Whenpriming new wickadd 40drops. SmokeUnit ON/OFF Switch SmokeUnit C over Wickin Poor Condition Wickin Good Condition Locomotive Light Bulb Replacement To replace the light bulb inthe locomotive, follow the boiler removalinstructions below. STEP Remove t hesixPhillipsscrewsfromthechassisthenliftthebodyawayfromthechassis. RailKing2-8-0Steam Freight Set withLoco-Sound™ 13 STEP Once the locomotiveboiler hasbeenremoved from its chassis, locate the bulbbracket as seen in the illustrationontherightandrotate the headlight bulb counter-clockwise to remove. ReplaceHeadlightBulb Caboose Light Bulb Replacement To replace the interior light bulbs f ollow theseinstructions andseethe diagrams below. STEP STEP Lowerthechassisfromthe shell,takingcarenot topull the wiresout. Removethefour(4) screwslocatedunder the caboose'strucks. STEP STEP Carefully loosen the end f ramesonboth endsfromthestep platform. StepPlatform End Frame Thengrasptheend framebythebottom andpivotoutward5 degrees. Remove the stepplatforms from bothends. Lower the chassisfrom theshell, taking care not topullthe wiresout. STEP Replacea BayonetBulbby turningand pushingup,pulling the bulb from itssocket.
