CAUTION: Safety Instructions

Use the following safety guidelines to help ensure your own personal safety and to help protect your computer and working environment from potential damage.

General

• Do not attempt to service the computer yourself unless you are a trained service technician. Always follow installation instructions closely.

• To help prevent electric shock, plug the computer and device power cables into properly grounded electrical outlets. These cables are equipped with 3-prong plugs to help ensure proper grounding. Do not use adapter plugs or remove the grounding prong from a cable.

If you must use an extension cable, use a 3-wire cable with properly grounded plugs.

• To help avoid the potential hazard of electric shock, do not use your computer during an electrical storm.

• To help avoid the potential hazard of electric shock, do not connect or disconnect any cables or perform maintenance or reconfiguration of this product during an electrical storm.

• If your computer includes a modem, the cable used with the modem should be manufactured with a minimum wire size of 26 American wire gauge (AWG) and an FCCcompliant RJ-11 modular plug.

• Before you clean your computer, disconnect the computer from the electrical outlet.

Clean your computer with a soft cloth dampened with water. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners, which may contain flammable substances.

• To help avoid possible damage to the system board, wait 5 seconds after turning off the computer before disconnecting a device from the computer.

• To avoid shorting out your computer when disconnecting a network cable, first unplug the cable from the network adapter on the back of your computer, and then from the network jack. When reconnecting a network cable to your computer, first plug the cable into the network jack, and then into the network adapter.

• To help protect your computer from sudden, transient increases and decreases in electrical power, use a surge suppressor, line conditioner, or uninterruptible power supply

(UPS).

• Ensure that nothing rests on your computer’s cables and that the cables are not located where they can be stepped on or tripped over.

• Do not push any objects into the openings of your computer. Doing so can cause fire or electric shock by shorting out interior components.

• Keep your computer away from radiators and heat sources. Also, do not block cooling vents. Avoid placing loose papers underneath your computer; do not place your computer in a closed-in wall unit or on a bed, sofa, or rug.



When Using Your Computer

As you use your computer, observe the following safe-handling guidelines.

CAUTION: Do not operate your computer with any cover(s) (including computer covers, bezels, filler brackets, front-panel inserts, and so on) removed .

• Your computer is equipped with one of the following:

– A fixed-voltage power supply — Computers with a fixed-voltage power supply do not have a voltage selection switch on the back panel and operate at only one voltage (see the regulatory label on the outside of the computer for its operating voltage).

– An auto-sensing voltage circuit — Computers with an auto-sensing voltage circuit do not have a voltage selection switch on the back panel and automatically detect the correct operating voltage.

– A manual voltage selection switch — Computers with a voltage selection switch on the back panel must be manually set to operate at the correct operating voltage.

Set the switch to the position that most closely matches the voltage used in your location.

NOTICE: To help avoid damaging a computer with a manual voltage selection switch, set the switch for the voltage that most closely matches the AC power available in your location. For Japan, the voltage selection switch must be set to the 115-V position even though the AC power available in

Japan is 100 V. Also, ensure that your monitor and attached devices are electrically rated to operate with the AC power available in your location.

• Before working inside the computer, unplug the computer to help prevent electric shock or system board damage. Certain system board components continue to receive power any time the computer is connected to AC power.

When Working Inside Your Computer

Before you open the computer cover, perform the following steps in the sequence indicated.

CAUTION: Do not attempt to service the computer yourself, except as explained in your online Dell™ documentation or in instructions otherwise provided to you by

Dell. Always follow installation and service instructions closely.

NOTICE: To help avoid possible damage to the system board, wait 5 seconds after turning off the computer before removing a component from the system board or disconnecting a device from the computer.

Perform an orderly computer shutdown using the operating system menu.

Turn off your computer and any devices connected to the computer.

Ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal surface on the chassis, such as the metal around the card-slot openings at the back of the computer, before touching anything inside your computer.

While you work, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface on the computer chassis to dissipate any static electricity that might harm internal components.

Disconnect your computer and devices, including the monitor, from their electrical outlets. Also, disconnect any telephone or telecommunication lines from the computer.

Doing so reduces the potential for personal injury or shock.

In addition, take note of these safety guidelines when appropriate:

• When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its strain-relief loop, not on the cable itself. Some cables have a connector with locking tabs; if you are disconnecting this type of cable, press in on the locking tabs before disconnecting the cable. As you pull connectors apart, keep them evenly aligned to avoid bending any connector pins. Also, before you connect a cable, ensure that both connectors are correctly oriented and aligned.

• Handle components and cards with care. Do not touch the components or contacts on a card. Hold a card by its edges or by its metal mounting bracket. Hold a component such as a microprocessor chip by its edges, not by its pins.

CAUTION: There is a danger of a new battery exploding if it is incorrectly installed.

Replace the battery only with the same or equivalent type recommended by the manufacturer. Do not dispose of the battery along with household waste. Contact your local waste disposal agency for the address of the nearest battery deposit site.

Protecting Against Electrostatic Discharge

Static electricity can harm delicate components inside your computer. To prevent static damage, discharge static electricity from your body before you touch any of your computer’s electronic components, such as the microprocessor. You can do so by touching an unpainted metal surface on the computer chassis.

As you continue to work inside the computer, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface to remove any static charge your body may have accumulated.

You can also take the following steps to prevent damage from electrostatic discharge (ESD):

• Do not remove components from their antistatic packing material until you are ready to install the component in your computer. Just before unwrapping the antistatic packaging, discharge static electricity from your body.

• When transporting an electrostatic sensitive component, first place it in an antistatic container or packaging.

• Handle all electrostatic sensitive components in a static-safe area. If possible, use antistatic floor pads and workbench pads.

Ergonomic Computing Habits

CAUTION: Improper or prolonged keyboard use may result in injury.

CAUTION: Viewing the monitor screen for extended periods of time may result in eye strain.

For comfort and efficiency, observe the ergonomic guidelines in your User’s Guide when setting up and using your computer.

Battery Disposal

Your computer uses a lithium-coin cell battery. The lithium-ion battery is a long-life battery, and it is very possible that you will never need to replace it. However, should you need to replace it, see your User’s Guide .

Do not dispose of the battery along with household waste. Contact your local waste disposal agency for the address of the nearest battery deposit site.

Getting Started/Setup

CAUTION: Before performing any of the procedures in this section, follow the

safety instructions in “CAUTION: Safety Instructions” on page 8.

NOTICE: If your computer has an expansion card installed (such as a network card), connect the appropriate cable to the card, not to the connector on the computer back panel.

You must complete all steps to properly set up your computer. See the appropriate illustrations that follow the instructions.

1 Connect the keyboard and mouse.

NOTICE: Do not attempt to operate a PS/2 mouse and a USB mouse simultaneously.

NOTE: If you have a Universal Serial Bus (USB)-compliant mouse or keyboard, use the USB connectors on the back of your system.

Connect the modem or network cable.

Insert the network cable, not the phone line, into the network connector. If you have an optional modem, connect the phone line to the modem.

NOTICE: Do not connect a modem cable to the network adapter. Voltage from telephone communications can cause damage to the network adapter.

3 Connect the monitor.

Align and gently insert the monitor cable to avoid bending connector pins. Tighten the thumbscrews on the cable connectors.

NOTE: Some monitors have the video connector underneath the back of the screen. See the documentation that came with your monitor for its connector locations.

Connect the speakers.

Connect power cables to the computer, monitor, and devices and insert the other ends of the power cables to electrical outlets.

6 Verify that the voltage selection switch is set correctly for your location. Your computer has a manual voltage selection switch. Computers with a voltage selection switch on the back panel must be manually set to operate at the correct operating voltage.

NOTICE: To help avoid damaging a computer with a manual voltage selection switch, set the switch for the voltage that most closely matches the AC power available in your location.

7 Press the power buttons to turn on the computer and monitors.

See "Completed Setup" on page 17.

NOTE: Before you install any devices or software that did not ship with your computer, read the documentation that came with the software or device, or contact the vendor to verify that the software or device is compatible with your computer and operating system.

Dell provides a number of tools to help you if your system does not perform as expected.

For the latest troubleshooting information available for your system, see the Dell Support website at support.dell.com

. You can also find descriptions of Dell troubleshooting tools in the section titled "Getting Help" in your online User’s Guide.

If computer problems occur that require help from Dell, write a detailed description of the error, beep codes, or diagnostics light patterns; record your Express Service Code and

Service Tag below; and then contact Dell from the same location as your computer.

See "Finding Information for Your Computer" on page 5 for an example of the express

service code and service tag.

Using the Drivers and Utilities CD

To use the Drivers and Utilities CD (also known as the ResourceCD) while you are running the Windows operating system:

NOTE: To access device drivers and user documentation, you must use the Drivers and Utilities

CD while you are running Windows.

Turn on the computer and allow it to boot to the Windows desktop.

2 Insert the Drivers and Utilities CD into the CD drive.

If you are using the Drivers and Utilities CD for the first time on this computer, the

ResourceCD Installation window opens to inform you that the Drivers and Utilities

CD is about to begin installation.

Click OK to continue.

To complete the installation, respond to the prompts offered by the installation program.

Click Next at the Welcome Dell System Owner screen.

Select the appropriate System Model , Operating System , Device Type , and Topic .

Drivers for Your Computer

To display a list of device drivers for your computer:

Click My Drivers in the Topic pull-down menu.

The Drivers and Utilities CD scans your computer’s hardware and operating system, and then a list of device drivers for your system configuration is displayed on the screen.

Click the appropriate driver and follow the instructions to download the driver to your computer.

To view all available drivers for your computer, click Drivers from the Topic pull-down menu.



Dell Diagnostics

When to Use the Dell Diagnostics

If you experience a problem with your computer, perform the checks in "Solving Problems" in the User’s Guide and run the Dell Diagnostics before you contact Dell for technical assistance. Running the Dell Diagnostics may help you resolve the problem without contacting Dell. If you do contact Dell, the test results can provide important information for Dell's service and support personnel.

NOTICE:

If your hard drive fails, run the Dell IDE Hard Drive Diagnostics (see "Running the

Dell IDE Hard Drive Diagnostics" on page 21).

Starting the Dell Diagnostics

Enter system setup as explained in the User’s Guide , review your computer’s configuration information, and ensure that the device you want to test displays in system setup and is active.

Start the Dell Diagnostics from either your hard drive or from the Drivers and Utilities CD

(also known as the ResourceCD).

Shut down and restart the computer.

When the DELL™ logo appears, press <F12> immediately.

NOTE: If you receive a message stating that no Diagnostics utility partition has been found, follow the instructions to run the Dell Diagnostics from your Drivers and Utilities CD.

If you wait too long and the Windows logo appears, continue to wait until you see the

Windows desktop. Then shut down your computer through the Start menu and try again.

When the boot device list appears, highlight Boot to Utility Partition and press

<Enter>.

When the Dell Diagnostics Main Menu appears, select the test you want to run.

Close the test screen to return to the Main Menu screen. To exit the Dell Diagnostics and restart the computer, close the Main Menu screen.



Starting the Dell Diagnostics From the Drivers and Utilities CD

Insert the Drivers and Utilities CD into the CD drive.

Shut down and restart the computer.

When the DELL logo appears, press <F12> immediately.

If you wait too long and the Windows logo appears, continue to wait until you see the

Windows desktop. Then shut down your computer through the Start menu and try again.

NOTE: This feature changes the boot sequence for one time only. On the next start-up, the computer boots according to the devices specified in system setup.

When the boot device list appears, highlight IDE CD-ROM Device and press

<Enter>.

Select the IDE CD-ROM Device option from the CD boot menu.

Select the Boot from CD-ROM option from the menu that appears.

to start the ResourceCD menu.

to start the Dell Diagnostics.

Select Run the 32 Bit Dell Diagnostics from the numbered list. If multiple versions are listed, select the version appropriate for your platform.

When the Dell Diagnostics Main Menu appears, select the test you want to run.

When the tests are completed, remove the CD.

Close the test screen to return to the Main Menu screen. To exit the Dell Diagnostics and restart the computer, close the Main Menu screen.

Running the Dell IDE Hard Drive Diagnostics

The Dell IDE Hard Drive Diagnostics is a utility that tests the hard drive to troubleshoot or confirm a hard drive failure.

Turn on your computer (if your computer is already on, restart it).

appears in the upper-right corner of the screen, press

<Ctrl><Alt><D>.

Follow the instructions on the screen.

If a failure is reported, see "Hard Drive Problems" in your User’s Guide .



Regulatory Notices

Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) is any signal or emission, radiated in free space or conducted along power or signal leads, that endangers the functioning of a radio navigation or other safety service or seriously degrades, obstructs, or repeatedly interrupts a licensed radio communications service. Radio communications services include but are not limited to AM/FM commercial broadcast, television, cellular services, radar, air-traffic control, pager, and Personal Communication Services (PCS). These licensed services, along with unintentional radiators such as digital devices, including computer systems, contribute to the electromagnetic environment.

Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) is the ability of items of electronic equipment to function properly together in the electronic environment. While this computer system has been designed and determined to be compliant with regulatory agency limits for EMI, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause interference with radio communications services, which can be determined by turning the equipment off and on, you are encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following measures:

• Reorient the receiving antenna.

• Relocate the computer with respect to the receiver.

• Move the computer away from the receiver.

• Plug the computer into a different outlet so that the computer and the receiver are on different branch circuits.

If necessary, consult a Dell Technical Support representative or an experienced radio/television technician for additional suggestions. For additional information, see the

User’s Guide that accompanied your computer.

NOTE: Inspect the regulatory label affixed to the back or bottom of your Dell System to determine the environments in which your system may be operated.

配置本产品。

• 如果计算机中安装了调制解调器，则调制解调器所用的电缆应采用 26 美国线规

(AWG) 中规定的最细电线以及符合 FCC 标准的 RJ-11 模块化插头进行制造。

• 清洁计算机之前，请先断开计算机与电源插座的连接。使用蘸水的软布擦拭计算

机。切勿使用液体或喷雾清洁剂，因为其中可能含有易燃物质。

• 为避免在断开网络电缆连接时造成计算机短路，拔出电缆时请先断开与计算机背面

网络适配器的连接，然后再断开与网络插孔的连接。将网络电缆重新连接至计算机

• 为避免因电源电压突然升降而损坏您的计算机，请使用电涌保护器、线路调节器或

不间断电源设备 (UPS) 。

• 确保没有任何物品压在计算机电缆上，切勿将电缆置于容易被踩到或碰落的地方。

• 切勿将任何异物塞入计算机的开口处。如果塞入物体，可能会导致内部组件短路而

引起火灾或电击。

• 将计算机置于远离暖气片和有热源的地方。另外，切勿堵塞通风孔。不要将纸张垫

在计算机下，也不要将计算机紧靠墙壁或放置在床、沙发或地毯上。

– 固定电压电源设备 — 附带固定电压电源设备的计算机背面板上没有电压选择开

关，并且只能以一种电压操作（请在计算机外侧的管制标签上查看操作电压）。

– 自动感应电压电路 — 附带自动感应电压电路的计算机背面板上没有电压选择开

关，可以自动检测正确的操作电压。

– 手动电压选择开关 — 计算机背面板上附带电压选择开关，您必须手动设置为以

正确的操作电压进行操作。

设置开关位置时，请尽量与您所在位置的电压相匹配。

藈藈为避免损坏附带手动电压选择开关的计算机，请将此开关设置为最符合您所在地区交

流电源的电压。虽然日本的交流电压为 100V ，但电压选择开关必须设置为 115V 。另外，请

确保显示器以及其它已连接设备的额定电压与您所在地区提供的交流电源电压相匹配。

• 断开电缆时，请抓住电缆的连接器或张力释放拉环将其拔出，切勿拉扯电缆。某些

电缆的连接器带有锁定卡舌，如果您卸下此类电缆，请在拔下电缆前先按下锁定卡

舌。拔出连接器时，应将其两边同时拔出，以免弄弯连接器插针。另外，在连接电

缆之前，请确保两个连接器均已正确定向并对齐。

• 如果不准备将组件装入计算机，请不要将组件从防静电的包装材料中取出。打开防

许可的服务设施与无意放射体（例如计算机系统等数字设备）一起形成了电磁环境。

电磁兼容性 (EMC) 指各种电子设备在电子环境中共同工作的能力。本计算机系统符合

管制机构关于 EMI 的限制，但是并不保证在特定的安装环境中绝对不会产生干扰。如

果此设备确实对无线电通信服务造成了干扰（可以通过关闭和打开设备确定是否有干

一般規定

• 為防止觸電，請將電腦和裝置的電源線插入已正確接地的電源。這些電源線配有 3 叉

式插頭以協助您確保正確接地。請勿使用配接插頭或移除電源線插頭上的接地叉

腳。如果必須使用延長線，請使用具有正確接地插頭的 3 線電源線。

• 為避免觸電的潛在危險，請勿在發生雷暴時使用電腦。

• 為避免觸電的潛在危險，請勿在發生雷暴時連接或拔除任何纜線，或對本產品進行

維護或重新組態。

• 如果您的電腦配有數據機，則數據機使用的纜線在製造時應符合 26 美規線徑 (AWG)

的最小電線尺寸之規定，並具有符合 FCC 標準的 RJ-11 模組化插頭。

• 清潔電腦之前，請先從電源插座上拔除電腦的電源線。然後使用一塊用水蘸濕的軟

布清潔電腦。切勿使用可能含易燃物質的液體或噴霧清潔劑。

• 為了保護您的電腦避免受電壓瞬間升高或降低所導致的損壞，請使用突波抑制器、

線路調節器或不斷電系統 (UPS) 。

• 確定電腦的纜線上沒有放置任何物件，且不是處於會被踩到或絆倒的地方。

• 切勿在電腦的開口處塞入任何物件。否則可能會導致內部元件短路而發生火災或

觸電。

• 將您的電腦擺放在遠離散熱器或其他熱源的地方。此外，不可堵塞散熱通風孔。

且避免將紙張墊在電腦下，也不要將電腦緊貼牆壁或是擺放在床、沙發或地毯上。



使用您的電腦時

在使用您的電腦時，請遵照下列安全處理規範。

注意：請不要在任何護蓋 ( 包括主機蓋、前蓋、填塞托架、前面板插件等 ) 已卸下時操作

電腦。

• 您的電腦配備下列其中一種裝置：

– 固定電壓電源供應器 — 具有固定電壓電源供應器的電腦，其背面板上沒有電壓選

擇開關，且僅在一個電壓下操作 ( 請參閱電腦外面的管制標籤以瞭解其操作電壓 ) 。

– 自動感應電壓電路 — 具有自動感應電壓電路的電腦，其背面板上沒有電壓選擇開

關，它會自動偵測正確的操作電壓。

– 手動電壓選擇開關 — 背面板上具有電壓選擇開關的電腦，必須手動設定正確的操

作電壓以進行操作。

請將開關設定到最接近您所在地區電壓的位置。

注意事項：為避免損壞具有手動電壓選擇開關的電腦，請將電壓開關設定至與您所在地區的

交流電源電壓最接近的電壓。儘管日本使用 100 V 的交流電，電壓選擇開關亦必須設定至 115

V 的位置。此外，還必須確定您的監視器和連接的裝置電壓，也設定為符合您所在地區的交流

電源。

• 進行主機內部組裝之前，請先拔下電腦電源插頭，以避免觸電或損壞主機板。只要

電腦連接了交流電源，部分主機板元件就會不斷消耗電能。

在您打開主機蓋之前，請依序執行下列步驟。

另外，請適時注意下列的安全規範：

• 拔除纜線時，請拉扯其接頭或放鬆拉環，避免直接拉扯纜線。部分纜線的接頭具有

鎖定彈片；如果您要拔除此類纜線，請在拔除纜線之前按壓鎖定彈片。拉出接頭

時，接頭的兩邊應同時退出，以避免弄彎接頭的插腳。此外，連接纜線前，請先確

定兩個接頭均已正確定位且對準插孔。

• 請小心處理元件和插卡。切勿觸摸插卡上的元件或接點。持卡時請握住插卡的邊緣

或其金屬安裝托架。移動微處理器晶片之類的元件時，請握住其邊緣，避免接觸到

插腳。

注意：如果新的電池沒有正確安裝，可能會有爆炸的危險。請以相同或製造廠商建議的同類

型電池更換原電池。切勿將電池與一般家居廢棄物一起處理。請與當地的廢棄物處理機構聯絡

防止靜電損害

靜電會損壞電腦內部的精密元件。為防止靜電損壞，請在觸摸電腦的任何電子元件 ( 例如

微處理器 ) 之前，先導去您身上的靜電。您可以觸摸電腦底架上未上漆的金屬表面，以導

去您身上的靜電。

在您進行主機內部組裝時，須經常觸摸主機底架上未上漆的金屬表面，以導去您身體上可

能累積的靜電。

您也可以採取下列步驟以防止靜電釋放 (ESD) 造成的損壞：

• 當您準備好將元件安裝到電腦之前，請勿將其從防靜電的包裝材料中取出。打開防

靜電的包裝之前，請導去您身上的靜電。

• 運送對靜電敏感的元件時，首先應將其放入防靜電的容器或包裝內。

• 請在無靜電的工作區域處理所有對靜電敏感的元件。如有可能，請使用防靜電地板

墊和工作檯墊。

人體工學計算習慣

注意：不正確或長時間使用鍵盤可能會導致傷害。

注意：長時間注視監視器畫面可能會導致眼睛疲勞。

安裝和使用電腦時，為了舒適而有效地工作，請注意使用者指南中人體工學的規範。

電池處理

電腦使用幣式鋰電池。幣式鋰電池是使用壽命很長的電池，您很可能不需要進行更換。

但是，如果需要進行更換時，請參閱使用者指南。

切勿將電池與一般家居廢棄物一起處理。請與當地的廢棄物處理機構聯絡以瞭解離您最近

開始本部份中的任何程序之前，請按照系統資訊指南中的安全說明進行第 52 頁的

「注意：安全說明」。

注意事項：如果電腦安裝了擴充卡 ( 如網路卡 ) ，請將適當的纜線連接至網路卡，而不是電

腦背面板上的接頭。

您必須完成以下所有步驟才能正確安裝電腦。請參見適當的圖並按照說明進行。

配接卡。

連接監視器。

對齊並輕輕地插入監視器纜線以免弄彎接頭插腳，然後轉緊纜線接頭上的指旋

螺絲。

註：某些監視器的視訊接頭位於其螢幕背面的下方。請參閱監視器隨附的說明文件，以找

到接頭的位置。

連接喇叭。

將電源線連接至電腦、監視器和裝置，然後將電源線的另一端插入電源插座。

6 確認電壓選擇開關是否已正確設定為您所在地區的電壓。電腦配有手動電壓選擇

開關。背面板上具有電壓選擇開關的電腦，必須手動設定正確的操作電壓以進行

操作。

注意事項：為避免損壞具有手動電壓選擇開關的電腦，請將電壓開關設定至與您所在地區

的交流電源電壓最接近的電壓。

7 按下電源按鈕以開啟電腦和監視器的電源。

請參閱第 60 頁的「完成安裝」。

註：安裝電腦未隨附的任何裝置或軟體之前，請閱讀軟體或裝置隨附的說明文件或與供應

商聯絡，以確認軟體或裝置是否與電腦和作業系統相容。
