Safety Information
Important Information
NOTICE
DF1 Protocol
Read these instructions carefully, and look at the equipment to become familiar with the device before trying to install, operate, or maintain it. The following special messages may appear throughout this documentation or on the equipment to warn of potential hazards or to call attention to information that clarifies or simplifies a procedure.
The addition of this symbol to a Danger or Warning safety label indicates that an electrical hazard exists, which will result in personal injury if the instructions are not followed.
This is the safety alert symbol. It is used to alert you to potential personal injury hazards. Obey all safety messages that follow this symbol to avoid possible injury or death.

XBT-L1 AB 01 DF1 Protocol
1 - Compatibility
The DF1 protocol developed on the MAGELIS terminal can be used to communicate with the following Allen Bradley process controllers:
- SLC-500, Micrologix 1000 / Micrologix 1200,
- PLC-5,
- PLC-2, PLC-3 and PLC-4.
2 - Installing the Protocol: Start up XBT L1000
CAUTION
EQUIPMENT DAMAGE HAZARD
The protocol should only be installed and used by authorized and properly trained personnel.
Failure to follow this instruction can result in injury, equipment damage or production loss.
Two scenarios:
- If no protocol has been installed, the "Install Protocol" dialog box opens automatically.
- If a protocol has already been installed, you can update the previous version or install another protocol. Close all open applications in XBT L1000 then select the File/Install
Protocol menu.

XBT-L1 AB 01 DF1 Protocol
3 - Operating Principle
XBT is Client.
The XBT operating principle is based on a "dialog table" which is situated in the process controller (Server).
XBT in its capacity as Client performs 3 types of action:
- initiated by the automated system,
- initiated by the operator,
- self-initiated.
The DF1 protocol is the communication protocol for Allen Bradley process controllers.
Depending on the type of process controllers in the range, the dialog will be supported by different types of frames:
• Specific SLC-500 frames or Micrologix 1000 / Micrologix 1200 (if only SLC-500 or Micrologix 1000 / Micrologix 1200 process controllers are addressed),
• Specific PLC-5 frames (if only PLC-5 process controllers are addressed),
• "BASIC COMMAND SET" generic frames (if different types of equipment such as
SLC-500, PLC-5, PLC-4, PLC-3, PLC-2, Micrologix 1000 / Micrologix 1200 are addressed without distinction,
Certain restrictions will apply to the access to the process controller data depending on the type of frame selected (see
).
The dialog between the MAGELIS terminal as client (requester) of the exchange, and the equipment as servers is of question/reply type.
Half/Full Duplex Link
The terminal automatically detects whether the link is of half or full duplex type.
The XBT can be connected in point-to-point mode, or the network of 254 possible PLCs can be used via the polling system. This characteristic is transparent to the user and the
XBT functions remain the same except for addressing which in the case of a point-topoint link is limited to the directly connected process controller (MASTER).
Automatic Detection of Full Duplex
It is important to note that the XBT should be connected to the network before turning on the power supply.
The polling detection mechanism is switched on when the XBT is powered on and switches off after about 30 seconds. This is why if the XBT is connected to the network when the mechanism is switched off, the controller will be automatically considered to be configured in Full Duplex and the XBT will behave as such.
Note:
If using Basic Command Set, you cannot write to an odd address when linked to a PLC-5.
Accordingly, it is best not to use the dialog table.

5 - Configuring the Dialog Table
To configure the dialog table:
2
3
Step
1
Action
Select Configuration/Dialog Table.
Enter the table start address and the scan time.
Construct the tabme by adding or deleting the functions required for your application.
Note:
Refer to the user’s manuals for graphic (XBT F/FC), alphanumeric terminals
(XBT H/E/P/HM) and XBT N/XBT R terminals in the MAGELIS range for more detailed information about dialog table content.
The dialog tables are made up of words
.
The addresses produced by XBT-L1000 are byte-type addresses. This means that the address of a dialog table element is equal to:
Address = n + 2 i
where: n = address of the beginning of the table,
i = word index of the element in the table.
6 - Equipment Symbol (CPU)
-Select the target equipment in the "Configuration/Equipment Symbol" menu.
WARNING
UNINTENDED EQUIPMENT OPERATION

Depending on the choice of process controller type, the possible file number will be:
Process controller type File number
Default (Basic Command Set) - For a SLC-500 use 9.
- For a PLC-5 this number.
corresponds to the transmitter's network address.

Between 9 and 255.
• Index i
Indicates the item number in the selected field.
Note :
If you use the Basic Command Set this item number may be interpreted differently according to the type of process controller. For further information refer to your process controller's technical documentation.
• Index j
It will only be possible to access this field if the selected data type is Nf:i/j.
It indicates the bit's row in the word (selected by means of the i field)

10 - Diagnosis
Behavior in the event of an error:
Display of "??????…" in the event of a transmission error: format/parity/CRC/no response or exception response.
Display of check marks for graphic objects if there is no response, or if the communication function is faulty
No repetition in the event of no response.
Diagnosis counters:
3 diagnosis counters can be displayed on the protocol’s system page (line parameters):
CPT 1/ Counter #1
: Number of errorfree
replies received.
CPT 2/ Counter #2
: Number of replies received with
a check frame byte error.
CPT 3/ Counter #3
: Number of requests still unanswered.
For XBT N/R, the counters #4 to #8 are not used.
