1.1-1 General
When connected to a control panel, the Man Machine Interface PC Modules offers the operator or technician concerned with maintaining machine performance, the possibility of visual control and on-line diagnostic assistance.
The module is accepted by all Series 7, Model 40 modular controllers and performs the control and processing of the operator control panel. Up to 4 PC Modules may be installed in one controller.
The TSX PCM37 2 module allows colour display of texts or animated graphics.
Note
• If the TSX PCM 37 2 module is to be connected to the TSX CPX 3714 terminal, the terminal should not be fitted with a TSX DEP 1212 interface card with 12 discrete inputs.
• If a key on the TSX CPX 3714 terminal (<V1.2) is pressed for longer than 30 seconds during operation with the TSX PCM 37 2 module, the keyboard could be rended inoperative.
This problem does not affect the application, the keyboard is simply blocked momentarily ("busy" indicator lamp on continuously). It can be solved by cutting the power supply to the terminal.

3 Function
___________________________________________________________________________
The software structure of the module is similar to that of a micro-computer compatible
PC. It can comprise:
• A systems and services part, common to all the applications which may be executed by the Serial Communications Module.
• An application part defined by the PL7-MMI 37 software development tool.
• An OEM application.
_______________________________________________________________________________________
3.2-1 Operating System and Services
This software is resident in the PC Modules and performs the non application-specific functions:
• BIOS
The BIOS is located in the BIOS ROM and manages the system start-up from powerup (auto-tests). Additionally, it looks after all the physical I/O such as keyboard, video, serial link, pseudo disks (SYSTEM/RAM DISK) and shared memory.
• Operating System and Services
This software is located in the system memory (SYSTEM DISK). It comprises the operating system DR DOS 5.0, the multi-tasking DESQview configuration manager as well as a certain number of other utilities.
___________________________________________________________________________
10
Function 3
___________________________________________________________________________
Each time the PC Modules is powered-up or initialized, it executes a series of self-tests:
• Firstly, it executes the tests which in the case of a detected failure, stop the microprocessor, thus making the module inoperative:
- Microprocessor test.
- BIOS ROM test.
- DMA and timers test.
• Providing the first series of tests execute without error, a second series are performed.
Should a failure be detected, an error message is displayed and the microprocessor is allowed to continue the test execution. The tests comprise:
- Determining the size of system RAM memory.
- Video controller test.
- Interrupt controller test.
- RAM memory test.
- Keyboard test.
- System disk test.
- Serial link test.
- Shared memory test.
Providing the self-testing terminates without error, the BIOS "Bootstrap" loader executes and attempts to find the system "Boot" file either in the memory cartridge or in system memory. The first example found is then loaded into memory and executed to start-up the system.

Operation 4
___________________________________________________________________________
At power-up, the function of the PC Modules is determined by the condition/presence of the cartridge:
• If the cartridge is absent or non-formated, the module will execute the self-test routines, then load and execute the operating system found in system memory
(SYSTEM DISK). The time, as read from the PLC and the main user menu are displayed on the screen. The user menu offers the following functions to the user:
- Cartridge initialization.
- Updating the time/date in the PLC or the PC Modules.
- Executing an application.
- Return to the operating system.
• If an application cartridge(formatted and non-bootable) is present, the module will execute the self-test routines, then load and execute the operating system found in the system memory (SYSTEM DISK).
Should there be no application programs present in the cartridge, the time read from the PLC and the main user menu are displayed on the screen. In the case where an application is present in the cartridge, it is executed.
• If a system cartridge (formatted and bootable) is present, the module will execute the self-test routines, then load and execute the operating system found in the cartridge.

4.2-1 General
The main user services menu is displayed after loading the operating system present in the system memory (SYSTEM DISK): in the case of cartridge absence, cartridge not formatted or cartridge without application program.
A band in the upper part of the screen displays the time and date read from the PLC at power-up but subsequently maintained by the PC Modules. The central part of the screen indicates the main user accessible functions supported by the permanent services:
• Cartridge initialization.
• Modification of date/time
• Executing an application.
• Return to DOS.
Other additional functions are:
• Monitoring of UNI-TE requests capable of being received by the module.
• Message handling associated with file transfers between PL7-MMI 37 and the module.

Warning! This operation erases the whole cartridge!
Do you really want to continue (F9=Yes, Others=No)?
<Any key other than F9> aborts the initialization of an application cartridge.
<F9> confirms and starts cartridge initialization. This is performed in two phases:
Formatting the Cartridge: Consists of initializing each sector of the cartridge with the same data, then verifying it in order to update the File Allocation Table
(FAT) with the bad sectors.
As the initialization proceeds, the result of each operation is displayed track by track in the form of a horizontal bar graph.
Should a track show an error, a message is displayed instead of the bar graph.
___________________________________________________________________________
16
Operation 4
___________________________________________________________________________
Logical Formatting of the Cartridge: Consists of initializing the first sectors of the cartridge in the following manner:
• Initializing the boot sector.
• Initializing the FAT sectors.
• Initializing the root directory sectors
• Creating a volume name (11 characters) to personalise the cartridge:

The message End Cartridge Initialization! informs the user that cartridge formatting is finished.
Errors which may be encountered during the cartridge initialization operation are of two types:
• Serious errors which require the operation to stop immediately: no cartridge present, EPROM cartridge, error in system tracks (tracks 0 & 1).
• Errors relating to one track: checksum error, sector not found, write or read error,... The track is also declared unusable by the DOS, which reduces the size of available memory in the cartridge accordingly.

<F10> Permits the user to initialize (or format) a system cartridge (bootable cartridge).
The following message is first displayed on the screen:
WARNING! This cartridge can't contain a Monitor 37 application!
Do you really want to continue (F9=Yes, Others=No)?
In general a system cartridge cannot accept an application created by PL7-MMI 37, but only an OEM-specific executable application.
As for the application cartridge, the user is required to either confirm and start the formatting operation, or abort.
The procedure of the formatting operation is identical to that for the application cartridge. The only difference consists of adding the boot sector as well as the
DOS system files when the formatting is finished.
The error management is also identical to that for the application cartridge with the exception that the error message associated with the system tracks applies equally to tracks 2 to 12 (boot sector and DOS system files zone).
