PRX Encoder Overview
PRX Encoder Overview
Nexio® PRX Encoder is an optional software application for the Nexio AMP media platform. It allows the
Nexio server to generate low-resolution H.264 MP4 proxy files simultaneously while high-resolution video is being recorded. These proxy files are saved to any standard storage array where they can be viewed, edited and conformed back to high-resolution. PRX Encoder does the following:
Encodes Nexio video to H.264 proxy at 384 kbps, 768 kbps, 1.5 Mbps, or 3 Mbps
Encodes Nexio audio to ACC at 32 to 192 kbps per pair at 22000, 24000, 41000, or 48000 kHz, 16-bit.
Encodes HD Nexio content at 640x360 proxy resolution.
Encodes SD Nexio content at 640x360 (16:9) or 480x360 (4:3) proxy resolution.
Encodes up to four channels simultaneously in real time.
Creates MP4 file format.
Encodes all Nexio-supported HD and SD formats.
The PRX Encoder application can monitor up to four Nexio AMP high-resolution record channels. When it detects a recording, it creates a low-res proxy file on a storage device that you designate.
The PRX Encoder runs in the background. PRX Encoder Client displays the current status of each recording channel to which it has been configured.
All MP4 proxy files created by PRX Encoder can be viewed via Nexio Player or Nexio MediaBase plug-in
(NXMB).

Configure the Encoder
PRX Encoder Overview
You can use the Nexio Config software tool to configure your server to work with the PRX Encoder.
On the
Channel Configuration
tab, the
Record/Bi-directional Channels
value indicates the number of record channels available on the server. You can set a
Low Res Proxy Channels
value for each record channel up to a maximum of four channels. PRX Encoder will use these channels to encode the low-res proxy files.
For example:
If you have 1 record channel on your server, you can specify 1 low-res proxy channel.
If you have 4 record channels on your server, you can specify 4 low-res proxy channels.
Be sure to configure the Video Bitrate, Audio Bitrate, Audio Sample Rate, and GPRX Location.

PRX Encoder Operation
The following sections describe how to open and configure PRX Encoder, and they also provide suggestions for using PRX Encoder in your workflow.
PRX Encoder is a background application. You can manually start and stop Encoder using Requestor or configure it to auto-run. Thereafter, Encoder runs continuously in the background. See Encoder Settings
(on page 11) for more information about Encoder.
Encoder Client is the user interface that connects to PRX Encoder. It is used for initial setup but is not required to be running for normal operations.
Launch Encoder Client
Double-click the icon to display the Encoder Client UI.
The first time Encoder Client is launched, it will prompt to enter Encoder IP(s). Thereafter, click the
…
button to the right of the Encoder IP field to open this dialog.

Applications
When the PRX Encoder software is started and configured, the application runs automatically in the background. No user intervention is necessary. If you want to monitor low-res recordings or recording status, you can open the Encoder Client UI and view the log entries for the applicable channel.
You can view the MP4 proxy files generated by PRX Encoder with the Nexio MediaBase plugin (NXMB),
Nexio Player, or any standard media player. All of the metadata saved with the high resolution files on the Nexio SAN can also be viewed with the proxy files.
These MP4 proxy files are also available for editing with Velocity PRX proxy editors. Projects edited with
Velocity PRX using global proxy files can be conformed directly to high resolution clips using the Nexio
InstantOnline conforming engine or sent to Velocity ESX or a third-party editor for high-resolution finishing.

Nexio® PRX Encoder
User Guide PRX Encoder Operation
PRX Encoder also works in conjunction with PRX Scavenger and PRX Transcoder. While PRX Encoder handles baseband encodes, PRX Scavenger manages all file based transcodes with PRX Transcoder. PRX
Scavenger handles metadata updates that occur after the proxy file has been created, as well as deletion of the file in parallel with the high-res.
Note:
You can use the Overwrite Existing Proxy File option in the Encoder Settings (on page 11) to
ensure that the MP4 file name in use matches to the high-resolution ID name. Otherwise, PRX Encoder generates a new unique file name (though still linked to the high-resolution file by way of UMID).
Logo and Timecode Overlay
PRX Encoder can utilize a graphic overlay file to "watermark" low-res content as well as provide
"burn-in" timecode. An application called Proxy Overlay Handler performs this function along with PRX
Encoder and the LLM. It also works in conjunction with Scavenger which manages and forwards the rules and logo file.
The Scavenger system’s IP must be setup using the Nexio Helper. The file path for logos must be entered in Scavenger settings as a full UNC path. See the PRX Transcoder and Scavenger User Guide for more information on the set up and configuration.
