IV. MAINTENANCE
A. FUEL
*** NOTE: Be sure to read these instructions in addition to the Briggs & Stratton Operator/Owner
Manual included before attempting to start or operate the unit.
1. Using old or improper fuel can cause engine damage, which may void the engine warranty.
2. Use clean, fresh, lead-free automotive gasoline with a minimum of 77 octane purchased
from a reputable supplier.
3. The use of gasoline containing alcohol is not recommended. Do not mix oil with gasoline.
4. Store fuel in a clean airtight container in a protected area away from buildings. Keep dirt,
scale, water or other foreign material out of fuel.

C. BATTERY
There are 2 possible battery styles that may be used in downEaster salt and sand
spreaders. Although the batteries are functionally equivalent, they are sized
differently. Because of the different size, they will mount differently.
You can easily identify which battery fits a sander. Sanders that accept the larger
battery have two threaded posts to hold the battery in place.
The smaller Battery fits between the threaded posts. Secure the battery in place
using the hold-down bracket and connect the red battery cable to the positive
terminal and the black cable to the negative terminal.
The larger Battery fits in the tray located beneath the motor mount. The battery
must be placed on it's "side" in the tray with the posts facing the rear. Connect the
red battery cable to the positive terminal and then slide battery into the tray.
Next, connect the black cable to the negative terminal.

Frequently asked questions
To adjust the gate, tighten the bolt (A) just enough to provide friction to hold the gate in place. Move the gate handle down to increase the opening and up to decrease it. Once desired volume is achieved, tighten the wing nut (B).
Loosen the 3/4" locking nuts at either side of the left and right conveyor idler shaft adjustment brackets. Turn each threaded rod to loosen or tighten each side of the conveyor chain. The chain is correctly adjusted when there is 1/16" clearance between each side of the chain and the first conveyor support angle closest to the idler shaft. Tighten the locking nuts again.
The internal baffles can be adjusted by pulling the looped handles out of the adjustment holes and rotating them up to put the baffle into the flow of material. The external baffles are adjusted by loosening the locknuts on the hinges and adjusting them to the desired pattern, then retightening the locknuts.
