Removing the battery
To remove the battery, complete the following steps:
1. Read the safety information that begins on page vii and “Installation guidelines” on page 29.
2. Turn off the computer and all attached devices; then, disconnect all external cables and power cords.
3. Remove the side cover (see “Removing the side cover” on page 31).
4. Remove any adapters that impede access to the battery.
5. Remove the battery: a. Use a fingernail to press the top of the battery clip away from the battery
(see Figure 21). The battery pops up when released.
b. Use your thumb and index finger to lift the battery from the socket.

Installing the battery
The following notes describe information that you must consider when replacing the battery in the computer: v When replacing the battery, you must replace it with a lithium battery of the same type from the same manufacturer.

To order replacement batteries, call 1-800-426-7378 within the United States, and
1-800-465-7999 or 1-800-465-6666 within Canada. Outside the U.S. and
Canada, call your IBM marketing representative or authorized reseller.
v
After you replace the battery, you must reconfigure the system and reset the system date and time.

To avoid possible danger, read and follow the following safety statement.
Statement 2:
CAUTION:
When replacing the lithium battery, use only IBM Part Number 33F8354 or an equivalent type battery recommended by the manufacturer. If your system has a module containing a lithium battery, replace it only with the same module type made by the same manufacturer. The battery contains lithium and can explode if not properly used, handled, or disposed of.
Do not:
– Throw or immerse into water
– Heat to more than 100°C (212°F)
– Repair or disassemble
Dispose of the battery as required by local ordinances or regulations.
To install the battery, complete the following steps:
1. Insert the new battery: a. Tilt the battery so that you can insert it into the socket on the side opposite the battery clip.
b. Press the battery down into the socket (see Figure 22) until it clicks into place. Make sure that the battery clip holds the battery securely.

2. Reinstall any adapters that you removed.
3. Install the side cover (see “Installing the side cover” on page 32).
4. Reconnect the external cables and power cords; then, turn on the attached devices and the computer.
5. Start the Configuration/Setup Utility program and reset the configuration: v Set the system date and time.

Set passwords if necessary.
v
Save the configuration.
