Chapter 3: Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop CS4 Extended
It is rare that a final job comes to you as a Photoshop file; images are usually placed into page layouts or illustration files for design and output. So, in addition to being mindful of basic image attributes within Photoshop, you must also keep in mind how those images are handled and output by those other applications.
As in Creative Suite 3, there are two versions of Photoshop in Creative Suite 4: Photoshop
CS4 and Photoshop CS4 Extended. Photoshop CS4 is part of Design Standard; Photoshop
CS4 Extended is part of Design Premium, Web Premium, Production Premium, and Master
Collection. Both versions of Photoshop include these new features:
• Adjustments panel: Simplify image adjustment by easily accessing every tool you need to nondestructively adjust and enhance the color and tone of your images; on-image controls and a wide variety of presets are also included in the new live and dynamic Adjustments panel.
• Masks panel: Quickly create and edit masks from the new Masks panel. This panel offers all the tools you need to create editable pixel- and vector-based masks, adjust mask density and feathering, easily select noncontiguous objects, and more.
• Content-Aware Scaling: Use the new and revolutionary Content-Aware Scaling feature to automatically recompose an image as you resize it, smartly preserving vital areas as the image adapts to the new dimensions. Get the perfect image in one step without time-intensive cropping and retouching.
• Better raw image processing: Camera RAW now offers localized corrections, postcrop vignetting, TIFF and JPEG processing, and support for more than 190 camera models.
• Canvas rotation: Work on an image at any angle, without interpolation
• Pixel Grid: Perform precision editing at high magnifications, even in rotated views
• Improved retouching tools: Re-engineered Dodge, Burn, and Sponge tools lighten, darken, and modify saturation with more predictable results
• Better print experience: Get outstanding prints with superior color management, tighter integration with leading printer models, and the ability to preview out-ofgamut image areas. Support for 16-bit printing on Mac OS offers increased color depth and clarity.
• Superior performance on very large images: Take advantage of 64-bit support on certain Windows computers
• Multi-Touch support: Take advantage of Multi-Touch trackpad features on newer
Apple MacBook Pro and MacBook Air computers running Mac OS X Leopard
Photoshop CS4 Extended includes the above new and enhanced features, plus these new features:
• New 3D features: Now paint directly on 3D models, wrap 2D images around 3D shapes, convert gradient maps to 3D objects, add depth to layers and text, get printquality output with the new ray-tracing rendering engine, and enjoy exporting to supported common 3D formats.
• Edit motion graphics more efficiently with new single-key shortcuts, sync visual effects with specific points in an audio track using new audio syncing controls, and turn any 3D object into a video display zone.
The integration between Photoshop and the other Creative Suite 4 components enables you and your customers to take advantage of the flexibility afforded by the native Photoshop format.
