The dispiay is blank, but the handset can receive calls. The battery life is conserved in this mode. Base unit The base unit goes into the standby mode after you finish using the base unit (making/answering a call, using the intercom, using the answering system etc.). Headset Jack When an optional headset is connected to the handset, make sure to use the headset to talk with the caller.
