The Hot Shoe Grip accepts shoe mount flashes so
they can be used off-camera. The Grip attaches to
the camera with the optional Pentax Clamp and
Quick Release Bracket (for 35mm SLR cameras).
The AF400T 645 Bracket and AF400T 67 Bracket
can also be used.
Optional Pentax 4P Sync Cords are used for flash
sync connections from the camera to the Hot Shoe
Grip. Dedicated flash operation is possible with the
Pentax AFOSOC, AF160Sa, AF200Sa, AF200T,
AF240Z, AF260Sa and AF280T flash units. With
Pentax TTL Auto Flash cameras (645, LX, Super
Program), TTL Auto Flash is possible with the
AFOSOC, AF200T, and AF280T flash units.
Dedicated/TTL operation is not possible with the
AF240FT and AF400FTZ. If used on the Hot shoe
Grip, these flashes work only in their Manual
modes.
Slow Speed Sync flash is possible with the LX
camera if the Hot Shoe Grip's control switch is set
to Slow Speed Sync.

Hot Shoe Grip Operation
1) Slide the flash into the shoe on top of the Grip.
2) Plug the 4P Sync Cord into either socket on
the side of the Grip to lock it in place. To
unplug the cord, press in the cord lock button
and pull out the cord.
3) Attach the other end of the 4P Sync Cord to
the camera's TTL sync socket (LX), hot shoe,
or x-sync socket. With the 4P Sync Cord A or
A 5m for the LX, carefully align the TTL
contacts on the cord and camera, then tighten
down the cord's screw-in locking collar.

4) Set the Grips control switch as follows:
Auto Sync set - for dedicated and TTL Auto
Flash operation. See flash instruction manual
for more information about flagh operation.
Slow Speed Sync - for manual camera/flash
operation at the camera's normal x-sync shutter
speed (or slower speeds). To confirm flash
charging with Slow Speed Sync, check the
Ready light on the flash unit. Dedicated flash
operation is not possible with all the Pentax
cameras, though TTL Auto Flash operation
works normally. With LX, the following
function works normally: if the shutter speed is
higher than X sync, the exposure will be made
by the ambient lighting and the flash is not
fired. |
For cameras with slow speed sync capability,
slow speed sync flash operation will work with
the Hot Shoe Grip set to Auto Sync Set. See
camera/flash instruction manuals.
5) Unscrew the Grip's bottom cover to store extra
batteries, 4P Sync Cord A or C inside the
hollow Grip. A standard tripod socket is in the
bottom cover for mounting the Grip on a
tripod.

@®AF400T’S Bracket and Clamp
Use the optional Clamp and Quick Release
Bracket (for AF400T flash) to mount the Hot
Shoe Grip beside 3 35mm SLR camera.
@AF400T Bracket for Pentax 67
For the 67 camera, attach the Hot Shoe Grip with
the AF400T 67 bracket (clamp not required).
Use the 4P Sync Cord C to connect 10 the 67's
x-sync socket.
@Bracket 645 for AF400T
With the 645 camera, use the optional Clamp and
AF400T 645 bracket to hold the Hot Shoe Grip.
Use the 4P Sync Cord B (or B 5m) to connect to
the 645's hot shoe.Leaf shutter lens photography
is also possible using the 4P Sync Cord C.

Note on Flash Photography
Off-Camera Flash - if the flash is a large distance
away from the camera, correct dedicated/TTL auto
exposures may not be obtained. Bracket exposures
for best results.

When any individual flash (in a multiple flash
setup) is charged, the flash ready light in the
camera's viewfinder will come on. To be sure
that all other flashes are also charged, check
each of their flash ready lights.
If the non-TTL AF200S flash unit is used with a
TTL auto flash unit on the LX, the auto flash
confirmation signal may not appear in the LX
viewfinder.
With the Hot Shoe Grip connected to the LX
with 4P Sync Cord A, and another dedicated
flash in the LX's own hot shoe, the Grip’s slow
speed sync does not work. Switch it to Auto
Sync Set.
In muttipe flash setups, the automatic flash
settings of cameras with Program Flash modes
do not operate. Do not use the A (auto) lens
aperture setting - set the lens to a manual
f/stop instead.
Because of incompatible flash contacts, the
AF240FT and AF400FTZ cannot be combined
with any other flash units.
When using two or more flashes pointed in the
same direction, calculate their combined guide
number as follows:
Combined Guide No. = + (GN1)2+(GN2)2
With flashes pointed in different directions, vary
their power and balance by adjusting each
flash-to-subject distance. Judge their combined
effect visually, considering their individual guide
number and other factors for best results.
