ICM Specifications
The following section gives specifications for ICM, including the number of channels, VTRs, routers and
Proc Amps that can be used. This section also gives important information about minimum system requirements, network connections, communication ports, and Proc Amp timing.
ICM specifications:
Maximum 16 Nexio server channels controlled via ethernet connection.
Maximum 16 serial-controlled devices (including VTRs and Routers) with the following protocols:
Sony serial protocol for VTRs: ICM supports VTRs that support the Sony protocol.
Harris routers (all makes and models)
Probel routers (General Remote Control Protocol)
Sony routers (Cart +)
GVG routers (GVG-7000)
BTS routers (ASCII)
Pesa routers (CPU Link Protocol #1)
N-Vision routers (NV9000)
Maximum 16 proc amps controlled through Ethernet, including DPS 475, DPS 575, and X75 proc amps.
Network Connections
The ICM hardware is equipped with two Ethernet connections:
The first connection has been factory-set to connect to the Nexio Ethernet switch.
The second network connection may go to the Ethernet switch of the proc amps.
Note: ICM has a factory default IP address of 192.168.90.131. It is recommended that you do not change this IP address unless required.
Although some routers are capable of connecting through Ethernet, ICM communicates with all routers
through serial communications ports (see Communication Ports (on page 15)).
Note: To maintain reliable network connections, it is crucial that you do not connect any Nexio server equipment to any other network hardware. The Nexio network must remain isolated at all times.

Communication Ports
ICM Architecture
Videotape Recorder Connections
All connections made to videotape recorders (VTRs) should be made with high-quality, dual-pair, independently-shielded cable.
ICM uses the standard Sony 9-pin protocol for communication with all VTR brands and models. The female connectors provided on the serial port expander are configured to the SMPTE standard and allow for a 9-pin male to 9-pin male straight cable.
Note: The IconMaster RS-422 interface is hard-configured for DTE. However, the connector is a 9-pin female, which is normally DCE. Since the ICM is DTE, you may need to build a crossover cable.
Router Connections
ICM supports the following routers and their corresponding protocols:
Harris (all makes and models)
Probel (General Remote Control Protocol)
Sony (Cart +)
GVG (GVG-7000)
BTS (ASCII)
Pesa (CPU Link Protocol #1)
N-Vision (NV9000)
Router connections vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Consult the manual that came with your router.
Note: Do not install additional communication ports on your system without consulting Imagine
Communications. Nexio serial ports have optimized performance. Conflicts and possible system failure may result if additional ports are installed.
Proc Amp Timing
Every input must have a timed signal applied that is exactly referenced to the black reference on the back of each server. This is true whether the channel is used for ingest or not. The black reference should be wired with an equal distance of cable from the reference source to each server.
Each ingest channel must use Serial Digital Interface (SDI Nexio VR-400 series) or composite (Nexio
VR-300 series) proc amps. In an editing suite environment, the use of an SDI from a VTR to a non-linear editor (Nexio VR-400 series) provides a good source, assuming the VTR is referenced and the input to the non-linear editor is timed to the back of the server.
CAUTION
Failure to use a proc amp on each ingest channel will result in a range of problems throughout your entire system.
© 2016 Imagine Communications Corp. Proprietary and Confidential. 12/12/2016 | Page 15
Nexio® Ingest Control Manager
User Guide ICM Architecture
Source SDI proc amps do not provide adequate protection unless the following conditions are met:
Every source that can be routed to a server channel has a proc amp.
The router has been restricted not to accept other sources.
The SDI sources are referenced and timed to the back of the server.
Tip: Timing should be verified at the back of the server channel by temporarily removing the reference and input cables and applying them to a waveform monitor for timing.
You must time your proc amps exactly to the reference applied to the back of the server, whether you are using composite or SDI. If you are using Nexio servers, it is highly recommended to place a proc amp just upstream of the server inputs that will be ingesting.
CAUTION
Do not use Composite-to-SDI DA cards. The use of composite to SDI DA cards that do not have on-board synchronizers will corrupt your system and result in having to re-digitize every ID because they add about three lines of delay.
Time Reference
The Nexio® Ingest Control Manager maintains a locked clock with the Nexio servers. No external time reference is required within ICM. It is recommended to lock your Nexio servers to your facility’s time reference to ensure ICM executes events at the proper time.
Tip: If you experience time or date jumping, ensure that all automatic time updates on the computer have been turned off.
Planning an Installation
Before installing Ingest Control Manager it is recommended that you plot all hardware that ICM will be controlling to get a general idea of the best physical location for the server.
When planning your ICM installation, consider the following system requirements:
Adequate cooling
VGA, keyboard and mouse location
USB dongle access
External controller access
Distance and type of serial link to the routers
Distance to the VTRs
RS-422 control capabilities on VTRs
Distance to the Nexio Ethernet switch for server control
Distance to the proc amp’s Ethernet switch
Distance to quality control monitoring station
Speaker (optional) location and distance

ICM Architecture
ICM File Structure
This section gives file locations for user and router settings, and gives instructions on re-setting the factory defaults.
ICM System and User Settings
The ICM software is contained in a single executable file called Icm.exe. This file is all that is required to run the ICM client after its installation.
Two configuration files are used to store all of your settings:
Icm.ini
. ICM stores all application settings in the configuration file Icm.ini. If Icm.ini becomes corrupted or if you want to restore factory settings, you can delete the configuration file
Icm.ini. On the next launch of the application, the default factory settings will be used. This file is created when settings are saved.
User.ini
. ICM stores all user settings in a separate configuration file called User.ini. Similarly to Icm.ini, you can remove User.ini to restore the factory settings and remove user settings. ICM recreates the file when new user settings are saved.
Tip: You can send the configuration file to Imagine Communications for troubleshooting purposes.
Restoring Factory Settings
You can restore your system to factory settings if you encounter system problems and are instructed to do so by Imagine Communications Customer Support. Use the following instructions to restore factory settings.
Note: You should back up the folders C:\Program Files\ICM and C:\Program Files\DS_LLM.
If you restore these folders after returning to factory settings, configuring ICM for your company will be quick and simple.
To restore factory settings:
1. Back up Icm.ini by making a copy and saving the copy to a new location.
Icm.ini is located in the same directory as Icm.exe. The default directory for both files is
C:\Program Files\ICM.

Device Server LLM
ICM Architecture
The Device Server LLM uses a single executable called Ds_llm.exe. The device server settings are stored in a configuration file called Ds_llm.ini. These two files are required after a Device Server
LLM installation.
Note: The Device Server LLM will start in factory mode if the file Ds_llm.ini does not exist.
Backing up ICM
It is recommended that you back up your ICM system folders. With backup files, you can easily restore your settings, customization, and preferences if you need to do so.
Tip: To back up your system, copy the entire folders located at C:\Program Files\ICM and
C:\Program Files\DS_LLM. Ensure these copies are stored on media that will not be corrupted by system malfunction or by user error.

Device Server LLM
Device Server LLM
The Device Server Lower Level Module (LLM) is an independent software server that bridges the gap between the network and serial devices. The ICM client communicates over internet protocol (IP) to all hardware devices.
ICM uses direct and indirect communication with devices. Direct communication is made to IP-ready devices such as the Nexio servers and proc amps. Indirect communication is sent over IP to the Device
Server LLM application for translation to serial devices such as routers, VTRs, and GPIs.
Similar to the Nexio Lower Level Module, the Device Server LLM functions as the hardware controller for
ICM. The Device Server LLM can manage IP communication for thirty-two simultaneous clients.
The Device Server contains the following functions:
Communication Settings (on page 19 )
The Device Server LLM has required configurations for proper operation. Use the Device Server LLM user interface to configure communication and network ports.
To start the Device Server LLM, double-click the DS_LLM icon on the desktop. The Device Server LLM startup screen appears. If no errors occur when Device Server LLM starts, the application starts in a minimized display. If an error occurs, a message appears.
Note: Do not close the Device Server when using ICM if you intend to control a VTR or router. If you attempt to use ICM without Device Server, the VTRs and routers will not function.
Communication Settings
ICM can configure devices on up to 32 communication ports, but can enable only 16 devices at a time.
Each port must be configured to the specific device it will be controlling.
Note: If you select more than 16 ports as Hardware Enabled, a port conflict can occur.
To configure communication settings:
1. In the Settings menu, click Communication Ports.

2. Switch to the tab of the port that you want to configure.
3. Enter the following information in the communication port tab:
Hardware Enabled. Determines if the port is active or not. If checked, the Device Server LLM opens the port upon the start of the program. If unchecked, the port is ignored.
Tip: You can create alternate configuration settings for devices in tabs 17-32. Uncheck Hardware
Enabled until you wish to use these settings.
Note: To prevent errors at the start of the program, only the ports available within your system should be checked.
Port Settings. The port settings area determines the format of the serial communication to the device. These settings must match the serial parameters of the device being connected. See
Default Settings (on page 21 ) for the default port settings.
Baud Rate. The speed of the serial link.
Parity. The type of parity, if any, that is used.
Data Bits. The size of the data byte.
Stop Bits. The number of stop bits to identify the end of a byte.
DTR Enabled. Enables the Data Terminal Ready (DTR) line during communications. A DTR signal indicates that the computer is ready to accept incoming transmission.
RTS Enabled. Enables the Request To Send (RTS) line. An RTS signal requests permission to transmit data.
Tip: In most cases these lines are not needed. Enable (check) DTR and disable (un-check)
RTS.
On SMPTE RS-422 connections DTR and RTS lines are not present. For all RS-422 devices, you must enable (check) DTR and disable (un-check) RTS.
DTR and RTS lines are usually only used with older non-Imagine Communications routers and will likely not be needed by your equipment. However, if the DTR and RTS lines are needed they are available on the RS-232 connector.
Review your router documentation if you are unable to get your router working using a simple RS-232 cable (pins 2,3 and 5).

Network Settings
Apply the following settings to the server channel:
Network Card. The network card in ICM that is connected to the Nexio server.
IP Address. The IP address of the Nexio server. Each server must have an unique IP address. Each
Nexio server follows the same IP structure: 192.168.90.X.
Tip: In most cases this is the same IP address that is used in the Device Server: 192.168.90.131.
Port #. The port number is factory fixed at 331.
Codec Type. Defines the codec as standard definition (SD) or high definition (HD).

Channel #. Assigns the channel to be controlled on the server. Codecs 1-6 are supported.
Domain. Designated the domain which this server belongs to. ICM supports up to four domains running simultaneously.
Every server channel is required to belong to one of four domains. The server’s IP subnet must match on all matching domains. The first three digits of each domain’s IP address must be unique from any other domains.
Protect Settings
Protect settings create redundant records on two domains from a single record spot.
With protect settings, you can add dual record and dual playback abilities to the server channel configuration. Dual record and playback performance can be spanned over domains. This allows simultaneous record or playback on a domain’s A and B sides.
Protect Settings include:
Protect Server. Use to select a protect server channel. The protect server channel is the channel that tracks the main channel that is configured in the tab.
Record Protect. Use to define the protect recording option for the protect server selected. The available options are:
Off. No protect when main channel goes into record.
On All. Protect channel will also go into record when the main channel goes into record.
On EventBase Only. Protect only EventBase recordings. All other types will not be protected.
On Server View Only. Protect only recordings started in the Server View. All other types will not be protected.
On Digitize View Only. Protect only recordings started in the Digitize View. All other types will not be protected.
On Server and Digitize Views. Protect recordings started in the Server View and the Digitize
View. All other types will not be protected.

The following settings configure where the server channel is connected on the router:
Router #. The router where the server channel is connected.
Input #. The physical input number on the router.
Output #. The physical output number on the router.
Label. Some routers cannot be addressed by their physical inputs and outputs but require a short label for the sources and destinations. In this case enter in the label exactly as to how it corresponds within the routers control system.
Server Compression Settings
ICM uses the following default Nexio compression settings applied to a channel:
DV
HD 50Mbps — 300Mbps
MPEG
MPEG 4Mbps — 50Mbps
You cannot change the compression settings of the Nexio channel through ICM. If you need to change the compression setting on a channel (or see what the current settings are on a channel), you must use the Nexio Wizard on the Nexio server.
Domain Settings
Each server channel is required to be configured for one of four domains. The administrator configures the domain settings through the Domain tab on the Server Settings window.
Each domain must have an IP address in which its first three digits are unique from any other domains.
When you use a domain for more than one server, the first three digits must remain constant. You will receive an error if you configure a server to a domain in use by other server and do not keep the same first three IP subnet values. For example, you will receive an error if:
You configure Server 1 for 192.168.90.1 and select domain 1,
Server 2 for 192.168.90.2 and select domain 1,
and Server 3 for 192.168.91.1 (B side) and select domain 1.
ICM recognizes that Server 3 cannot belong to the same domain as Server 1 and Server 2 because the IP addresses are in a different subnet.
Tip: Most systems belong to the IP subnet 192.168.90.XXX.

Getting Started
This chapter gives you an overview of Nexio® Ingest Control Manager (ICM) and its functions.
ICM has been designed to provide you with both manual and automated control of a variety of broadcast equipment for the purpose of ingesting (recording) incoming feeds. ICM can communicate with up to 16 Nexio server channels (also VR-300 or 400 series), 16 RS-422 serial tape decks (VTRs), 16 proc amps (DPS-475/575 and X75), as well as 8 routers of different sizes and different manufacturers. All this hardware can be controlled and monitored simultaneously from within ICM.
Under no circumstances should changes be made to the installed Windows environment, by doing tasks including but not limited to:
Installing software
Installing virus protection
Setting up network shares
Screen savers
Changing system settings
Providing internet access
Setting up email accounts
Note: Failure to heed this may result in reduced performance and possibly result in system failure.
Starting ICM
The ICM software has been designed to automatically start when the system is booted. Shortcuts on the desktop are also provided, should you need to restart the program.
When ICM is first started it loads the MediaBase (server inventory) on each domain. The time it takes to load the MediaBase varies with the number of items currently in your system.
Tip: It is recommended that you wait until the MediaBase has loaded before continuing to other tasks.
Logging On
When the program first launches the User Logon screen displays. You can logon and logout through the
User Logon screen. The User Logon Screen can also be accessed on the main toolbar on the far right side.
Tip: User passwords are case sensitive.
To make any changes or control any hardware, the ICM software requires that you are logged in. If no user is logged in to the system, ICM allows you only to view monitoring windows. If the you attempt to control or change anything a message appears indicating that you do not have the correct privileges.

Loading and Updating MediaBase
The ICM extracts MediaBase inventory from the server channel when ICM is first started. ICM then monitors MediaBase to reflect any changes to the inventory.
ICM reads the contents of MediaBase from any operational server channel. If a server is shut down
(LLM), ICM looks to the next server on the same domain. If you start ICM when the first server is not started, MediaBase connects to the next available server on the same domain. If no servers are available on a given domain, MediaBase is not loaded for that domain.
It is recommended that you allow the MediaBase to fully load before using ICM.
Tip: If the ICM MediaBase gets out of sync with the server system, you can refresh MediaBase by exiting and restarting ICM.
Using MediaBase Domains
Tip: You can apply protection settings that will create redundant records on a second domain. For more
information, see Protect Settings (on page 38).
Organizing MediaBase
You can organize MediaBase by sorting or filtering MediaBase through the left navigation pane or through the main menu.

Time Zone Segmenting
Using Server Channels
Time zone segmenting is a powerful feature for organizations that have more than one location recording the same material at the same time. Using the segmenting feature, a single operator can clip a news feed, save the virtual subclip, then send the file to all other systems.
When multiple systems use time-of-day timecode for recording, they can experience a time zone offset.
The virtual subclip stores the time zone in which it was created, allowing an automatic time zone adjustment to a different timecode. When a virtual subclip is loaded, ICM checks the time zone and applies an offset, as needed, to all timecode values.
Time Zone Segmenting and Batch Digitizing
The virtual subclip file is also compatible with batch digitizing. This means one system can record to tape while another is recording to server. Either location can clip the feed and send the file for either segmenting or batch digitizing.
As the segmenting and batch digitizing file formats are identical, it does not matter if the feed was recorded on tape or server — the file can still be shared.
For example, one station can use the file for segmenting the feed while another digitizes a few key elements from the feed that were recorded to tape.

Digitizing
This section gives instructions on digitizing media. Digitizing is the recording of video and audio source material as a digital signal. When you digitize media, you ingest it into a digital system such as a non-linear editing system or a digital video server system. Digitizing through ICM generally refers to ingesting video or audio media from a live feed or pre-recorded from a VTR.
ICM batch digitizing allows you to mark a number of in and out points on a tape, assign IDs and other parameters, then automatically digitize them onto the server.
Note: You cannot digitize on a server that is currently recording or playing media.
Up to eight sessions of batch digitizing can occur simultaneously. Hundreds of in and out points can be stored in a single batch-digitizing list.
When digitizing media, you:
1. Create virtual clips. See Adding a Virtual Clip (on page 92).
2. Digitize the virtual clips to make them available to all users in MediaBase. Digitizing a Virtual Subclip

Conflict Checking
Before an event is added to EventBase, ICM checks that enough information has been given to accomplish the event and verifies that the information correct. If information is missing or incorrect, a message appears to indicate the problem.
ICM also performs conflict checking to protect existing events from interruption. ICM searches through existing events in the local EventBase for hardware conflicts that may exist from a previously scheduled event.
Conflict checking is performed on a device-to-device basis. If, for example, a device is used for only 30 minutes in a one-hour event, ICM recognizes this and allows the hardware to be scheduled for other tasks after the first task has completed.
When recording through Eventbase, if a protected (loaded) clip ID is encountered, Eventbase goes into increment mode rather than simply not recording.
If a conflict exists, you receive a server scheduling conflict warning.

Scheduling Devices
A single event can control all hardware types that are required to perform the task. This allows
EventBase to save and execute the different requirements that each event may use. A single event can typically use a two router changes, a proc amp configuration, and a server channel for recording.
Tip: An event can control up to two servers, two VTRs, four routers, one alarm, one GPI and two proc amps.

User Guide EventBase
Tip: If you need to reserve server time for a manual operation, you can use this command to reserve the time. Enter the duration of the reservation and enter None on the Command tab.
This prevents other users from scheduling an event that uses this hardware at the same time.
Record. Initializes the server to record at the start time.
Loop Record. Places the server channel in an endless loop recording. The duration specified is the size of the loop.
Tip: To automatically stop the loop, you can schedule a second server command to send a stop command.
Exact Record. Performs a frame-accurate record. Use exact record when you are performing network time-shifting.
To accomplish a frame-accurate record, the server begins recording 5-10 seconds before the scheduled start time. After the scheduled start time has passed the ID is trimmed to the exact start time and exact end time.
When performing an Exact Record, keep the following in mind:
Frame accuracy depends on the compression scheme used. The system looks for an "I" frame when trimming.
The exact record cannot be performed on IDs starting with the timecode 00:00:00;00 (a record starting at midnight). You can only perform exact records from 00:00:15;00 to
23:59:59;45.
Use Exact Record to time-shift material and Exact Play to play back. Time-shifting occurs when you frame-accurately record material at a specified time and shift it to playout at a later time. Time-shifting is primarily used for recording a network feed and then playing it back at a later time.
To use Exact Record for time shifting, you must configure your server to record time-of-day time-code.
Play. Initializes the server to play at the start time.
Exact Play. Similar to the exact record, the server loads the ID to be played 5-10 seconds prior to the start time and then places the server in play at the scheduled start time. Similar to a pre-roll with VTRs, this feature is ideal for time shifting.
Stop. Issues a stop command to the server.
Pause. Issues a pause command to the server.
Rewind. Issues a rewind command to the server.
Fast Forward. Issues a fast forward command to the server.
Record Description. Allows for a description on the server event. This description is transferred into
MediaBase for Nexio systems.
Agency. Lists agencies for further definition of the event. A new agency can be added by typing in this field.
Kill Date. The date the ID will be flagged as expired in MediaBase. The kill date works in terms of the number of days since the date the media is recorded.
Type. Lists existing agency types. A new agency can be added by typing in this field.
Increment. Defines the action to take if the ID already exists in the server when it starts recording.
Increment commands ICM to increase the last character until a unique ID is found and then start the recording under the unique ID. Increment finds a unique ID within milliseconds.

Nexio® Ingest Control Manager
User Guide EventBase
When the last portion of the ID is modified, you can still easily find material in the MediaBase by sorting by ID and watching the record date.
Overwrite. Defines the action to take if the ID already exists in the server when it starts recording.
Overwrite gives ICM the permission to delete the ID and then recreate it again. This will self-purge an ID. If you choose Overwrite and an ID is protected or has subclips, ICM automatically switches to
Increment for that particular occurrence.
CAUTION
When using Overwrite, you could delete needed media.
