Chapter 1 — Introduction 5

TECHNICAL OVERVIEW

Digital Picture Processing

The Intellex unit processes video images from each camera and stores them in the unit’s image database.

The unit stores two types of images. It selects a reference image, which is a complete image, and compresses the image’s information. The unit can decompress this information into a complete image at a later time.

The unit also stores “delta” images. It identifies the elements of a new image that have changed. The unit then compresses this information. Delta images contain less information than reference images. Therefore, they require less storage space, but they are incomplete without the reference image.

After the unit processes a certain number of delta images, it selects a new reference image. Delta images from a low activity area are small. Conversely, delta images from a high activity area are large.

Sensitivity Settings

The Intellex unit lets you control how it responds to subtle changes between delta images.

At the Normal Sensitivity setting, the unit ignores smaller, more subtle changes between images.

At the High Sensitivity setting, the unit records the smaller changes between images, improving the perceived picture quality. As a result, this setting requires more storage space.

Image Quality Settings

The Intellex unit lets you control image quality to give you the best combination of quality and storage for your installation.

Select different qualities for normal system operation, for specific cameras at specific times and for alarm operation.

At the Super Resolution setting, the unit uses the lowest level of compression and maintains the best image quality. This setting requires the highest amount of storage space and decreases the unit’s capacity.

At the Extended Record setting, the unit uses the highest level of compression and requires the least amount of storage space.

Using this setting increases the unit’s capacity, but the finer image detail is lost.

6 Intellex ® Operating Instructions

The Normal setting offers a balance between image compression and storage space requirements.

Video Input and Output

Main (SVGA) Monitor

The Intellex unit is available for either the NTSC/EIA or PAL/

CCIR video standards. Each unit provides a video input and a passive looping output for each camera. Neither synchronizing nor camera phasing is required.

The main monitor is a Super VGA (SVGA) monitor, which displays live and playback images. The screen is divided into an image display area and a control panel. In the display area, live images can be displayed in four formats: 1x1, 2x2, 3x3 and

4x4.

The full-screen feature lets you hide the on-screen controls and display live and playback images full-screen.

Optional Live Monitor

An analog output lets you install an optional live monitor. The unit continuously displays live images in any format (1x1, 2x2,

3x3 and 4x4) on this monitor. It also displays alarm messages when they occur.

In this configuration, the unit uses the main (SVGA) monitor to display the on-screen controls and to play back images from the image database.

Optional Live Remote

Live video option allows images from up to 16 cameras to be transmitted from remote Intellex units using the Network

Client software accessory. The rate at which a remote unit’s camera signals are refreshed and displayed depends primarily on the recording rate. Available network bandwidth can be a factor, especially with dial-up networking.

Optional Call Monitor

(requires Call Monitor board upgrade)

A single camera’s live (real-time) video signal can be viewed on an additional video monitor (the Call Monitor board must be upgraded to the fully populated version to support this option). This live display is initiated by the user’s command or triggered by an alarm input in one of two modes: Call Mode or Spot Mode. In Call Mode, video from a specific camera is displayed on the call monitor when commanded by the user.

In Spot Mode, the Intellex unit automatically displays video in sequence from alarmed cameras to the call monitor (similar to how a multiplexer sequentially displays camera signals).

The Call Monitor function can also be controlled via a serial connection from a Touch Tracker controller.

Chapter 1 — Introduction 7

IntelleCord Filters

The Intellex unit is equipped with IntelleCord filters (see Filter

Descriptions for more information). Once configured and scheduled, these filters preprocess incoming video signals according to your settings. The unit identifies important activity in the target area and records it, while ignoring unimportant activity.

Using the IntelleCord filters can also expand recording capacity.

If you use the unit as an event recorder, it will only record images with important activity in the target area.

Smart Search Filters

Smart Search filters let you search the image database for video segments containing specific types of activity (see Filter

Descriptions for more information). Select a type of activity and a target area. The unit locates video segments containing the activity in the target area. Then you only have to review a few segments to find the specific event.

Filter Descriptions

IntelleCord and Smart Search filters are nearly identical in configuration and operation. IntelleCord filters are used on live images; Smart Search filters are used to search the image database. The three filters are described below. The name of the Smart Search filter (if different) is in parentheses.

Motion Detection The motion detection filter identifies movement in the target area. Since the target area can be configured up to a 78x28 grid, you can check for motion at any of nearly 2,200 target points.

Perimeter Protection

(Perimeter Violation)

The perimeter protection (perimeter violation) filter identifies movement across a target boundary.

Light Change The light change filter identifies light level changes in the target area (light to dark or dark to light).

Playback

The Intellex unit lets you quickly and easily search for and play back images without interrupting image recording.

• Search according to date/time, camera and alarm criteria.

• Search using Smart Search filters.

• Play back video segments using the Play/Pause screen control.

• Play back images in forward or reverse sequence at a variety of speeds, even one image at a time.

8 Intellex ® Operating Instructions

• Use image enhancement tools (zoom, brightness/contrast, color, balance light, edge detect, enhance light, noise reduction, sharpen, smooth) before printing an image or saving it to a diskette.

Unit Configuration

The Intellex unit provides menus and screens for quick configuration. You can assign names for the cameras and alarm inputs, configure its response to alarms and configure its record operation and display settings.

WAN Support

WAN operation is supported via a port address, which can be specified in the unit’s setup. Identifying the port to use for network connectivity permits any network firewall programming to allow Intellex packets to pass.

Pre-Alarm Playback

Pre-Alarm Playback allows playback to begin with pre-alarm data when playback is initiated from the alarm list. You enable this function by selecting the “Play pre-alarm video if available” button in the Alarms screen. If pre-alarm playback is not enabled, playback starts with the alarm data.

Data Lifetime

The Data Lifetime feature allows users to delete data on a userdefined basis (from 1 to 199 days old), either system-wide or camera by camera. Data Lifetime lets you manage all data on the unit’s hard drive(s), either standard internal drives or external drives as in a RAID system, but not any data previously archived or exported to removable media or to a

Network Client host.

Security

The Intellex unit includes a user security system to prevent unauthorized use. To log in, operators must use their personal identification numbers (PINs). Their PINs and functions are assigned by the system administrator. When the operator leaves the unit unattended, he or she should log out to maintain system security.

NOTE: The default PIN code is 1234.

Schedule

A variety of scheduling options are available with the Intellex unit: regular, custom and single camera.

Chapter 1 — Introduction 9

Regular Schedule Select regular schedule processing when your installation uses the same hours of operation for every camera, every day and every night. The unit uses this schedule regardless of holidays and weekends. You can also configure two IntelleCord filters for each camera: one for daytime operation, the other for nighttime operation.

Custom Schedule

Select custom schedule processing if your installation requires greater flexibility. Configure a schedule for each camera using any of the following features:

• Create different schedules for weekdays, weekends and holidays.

• During active segments, Intellex records all images, regardless of alarm or filter activity.

• During alarm segments, Intellex only records images when an alarm event occurs.

• During disabled segments, Intellex neither records nor displays camera images, even when an alarm event occurs.

Single Camera

Select single camera processing to record a single camera continuously. The unit ignores all record settings and alarm events associated with other cameras.

Archiving

Archiving provides image backup, restore and playback on all units equipped with a Digital Audio Tape (DAT) drive.

Backup

You can back up images in foreground or background mode.

In foreground mode, the unit stops recording until it finishes backing up the database.

In background mode, the unit saves images to tape as it records.

Background mode is slower than foreground mode, but it does not interfere with unit processing or the configured record rate.

Restore You can copy up to 50 video segments from an archive tape to the unit for review. Video segments contain images from each camera recorded during the segment.

Playback You can play back restored video at any time. Later you can restore other video segments for review.

10 Intellex ® Operating Instructions

Archive Schedule

The Archive Schedule features allows the user to select data to be archived by specifying criteria of Camera, Day and Time, and Alarm. The Archive Schedule can be configured remotely using the Network Client software accessory.

Alarm Processing

The Intellex unit provides one alarm input and one alarm output for each camera, for a total of either eight or 16

(depending on model). You can select the polarity for each alarm input.

The unit also performs a number of functions whenever an alarm input is activated. It displays an on-screen alarm message, permanently saves pre-alarm images to the image database and activates the associated alarm output.

USING THE MOUSE,

FRONT PANEL AND

KEYBOARD

The Intellex unit requires a mouse or other pointing device.

The mouse is a “point and click” tool which lets you perform all unit functions.

For text entry, the unit includes a virtual keyboard and a virtual keypad, which are displayed on-screen and are operated using the mouse. A physical keyboard is not required for normal operation.

Mouse Operation

The unit supports PS/2 style mouse pointers. It recognizes both the left and right mouse buttons. (The center button, if present, is not used.)

To use the mouse, position the mouse pointer and press the

LEFT mouse button. This is called “clicking.” For some operations, you press the RIGHT mouse button, which is called

“right-clicking.” Always click the left mouse button unless the instructions specify “right-clicking.”

NOTE: While the instructions in this manual were written for right-handed mouse operation, you can reconfigure the mouse for left-handed operation (see Mouse Settings in Chapter 3 — System Configuration in the Intellex

Installation Instructions).

Front Panel Operation

In addition to indicators for power, record mode and alarm, the front panel includes power and reset switches. To avoid pressing them by mistake, you can only press these switches with a paper clip.

Keyboard Operation

Anytime a screen requires text or numeric entry, you can use either the virtual keyboard or an optional physical keyboard.

14 Intellex ® Operating Instructions

Virtual Keyboard The virtual keyboard is a list of buttons with letters, numbers and special characters, which appears at the top of all screens that require text input.

• Use the mouse to select the text to replace: click and hold the mouse and drag it across the text to change. Click the appropriate keys to enter the new text.

If you click the wrong key, click the (backspace) key to erase the character; then try again. Most fields limit the total number of characters. Therefore, you may have to erase some characters before adding more.

Physical Keyboard (Optional) Even though a physical keyboard is not required, it makes the configuration process easier.

Use one of the following methods to add or change text in a field:

• Use the mouse to position the cursor in the field where you want to add text. Type the new text.

• Use the mouse to select the text to replace: click and hold the mouse and drag it across the text to change. Type the new text.

Use the up and down arrows to change numbers with scroll boxes.

SECURITY

CONSIDERATIONS

The Intellex unit manages user activity through a system of user names and personal identification numbers (PINs). When changing users at the login screen, the unit checks the PIN against the user list. If it is valid, you gain access to all of your assigned privileges.

The unit denies access to unassigned privileges in one of two ways:

Disabled options —

The option does not function and is grayed out.

Alert messages —

An alert message may appear, describing the situation and/or suggesting an alternate action.

Your privileges are managed by the system administrator, who maintains the user list and assigns user names, PINs and system privileges. If you cannot access a feature or if you have questions regarding your privileges, contact the system administrator.

82 Intellex ® Operating Instructions

ALARM OPERATION

The Intellex unit detects and responds to four types of alarm events:

• Mechanical alarms

• Live filter alarms

• Video loss alarms

• Generated alarms

NOTE: The unit only processes alarm events for cameras that are being recorded when the alarm occurs.

Mechanical Alarms

A mechanical alarm occurs when there is a contact closure or polarity change at any alarm input.

The alarm connector provides one alarm input and one alarm output for each camera. The inputs can be connected to any device equipped with either a contact closure or TTL/CMOS standard output. The outputs can be connected to any device, and can operate as a contact closure or TTL/CMOS standard device.

Alarm input polarity can be set to either Active-Low or Active-

High

(see Alarm Setup in the Intellex Installation Instructions).

All alarm outputs are automatically set to a low (inactive) state when starting up the system.

When the unit detects a mechanical alarm:

1.

The unit energizes the alarm output associated with the camera.

2.

The unit records images from the alarm camera at the alarm record rate and quality setting (see Alarm Setup in the Intellex Installation Instructions).

3.

The unit adds the alarm camera to the alarm group and records its images more often than nonalarm cameras (see

Alarm Groups).

4.

The unit lights the Alarms indicator as soon as the alarm is cleared.

5.

The unit flags the video segment in the image database with the name of the alarm input.

Chapter 4 — Advanced Operations 83

6.

If the Pre-Alarm Duration option is selected, the unit saves the pre-alarm images to the image database (see Custom

Schedule Setup in the Intellex Installation Instructions).

7.

If the Alarm Message Display option is selected (see

Alarm Setup in the Intellex Installation Instructions): a.

If the camera is not currently displayed or is displayed in the camera sequencing window, the unit switches the live display monitor to the 4x4 format and overrides the display settings for the duration of the alarm

(see Display Setup in the Intellex Installation Instructions).

b. The unit displays ALARM over the camera image.

c.

If the Latch Messages option is selected (see Alarm

Setup in the Intellex Installation Instructions), the unit enables the Clear Latched button on the Utility Options screen (see Utility Options).

d. The unit suspends camera sequencing on the live display monitor.

8.

If the Unit Alarm Out option is selected, the unit energizes the alarm output associated with camera 16 (see Alarm

Setup in the Intellex Installation Instructions).

The unit remains in the alarm state until ALL of the following occur: a.

All alarms, including mechanical, are released.

b. The Duration time elapses (see Alarm Setup in the

Intellex Installation Instructions).

Once the unit exits the alarm state, it returns to the previous display mode, record mode and quality settings.

If the Latch Messages option is selected (see Alarm Setup in the Intellex Installation Instructions), the unit displays the alarm message until the Clear Latched button on the Utility Options screen is clicked (see Utility Options).

84 Intellex ® Operating Instructions

Live Filter Events

The Intellex live filters enable the unit to respond to specific activity at specific cameras. When configured, these filters help the unit record important activity and ignore unimportant activity.

A live filter event occurs when the live filter is triggered by some activity in the camera’s field of view.

When the unit detects a live filter event:

4.

The unit remains in the alarm state until ALL of the following occur: a.

The activity that triggered the live filter ceases, and all other alarms are released.

Video Loss Alarms

The Intellex system can detect loss of the video signal at any connected camera input. The Alarm on Video Loss option in the Alarms portion of the Setup Options screen must be selected to enable this feature (see Alarm Setup in the Intellex

Installation Instructions).

When the unit detects loss of video signal at any connected camera input:

1.

The unit energizes the alarm output associated with the camera.

2.

The unit lights the Alarms indicator as soon as the alarm is cleared.

3.

The unit adds color bars to the video segment at the point where video was lost and flags it in the image database with the name Video Loss.

If the Latch Messages option is selected (see Alarm Setup in the Intellex Installation Instructions), the unit displays the alarm message until the Clear Latched button on the Utility Options screen is clicked (see Utility Options).

Alarm Groups

During normal operation, the Intellex unit samples cameras in camera number order. Each time through the sequence, the unit samples one image from each camera (unless disabled).

For example, with nine cameras connected, the sequence is:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 1 2 3 .

.

.

When an alarm is detected, the unit increases the number of samples from the camera associated with the alarm. It adds the camera to the alarm group. After the unit samples each nonalarm camera, it samples from all cameras in the alarm group. As alarms start and stop, cameras are added to and removed from the alarm group.

For example, if alarms are detected at inputs 5 and 9, the unit creates an alarm group containing these two cameras. The sequence changes as shown below. The group is repeated after each nonalarm camera.

5 9 1 5 9 2 5 9 3 5 9 4 .

.

.

Chapter 4 — Advanced Operations 89

Suppose alarm input 9 clears. The unit drops camera 9 from the alarm group, but camera 5 is still in the alarm group.

5 1 5 2 5 3 5 4 5 6 5 7 .

.

.

Suppose an alarm is now detected at alarm input 2. The unit adds camera 2 to the alarm group, which still includes camera 5.

2 5 1 2 5 3 2 5 4 2 5 6 .

.

.

The Intellex unit processes multiple alarms in the order they occur.
