CAUTION

Precautions
Installing your TV
• Place the TV on the floor or on a sturdy platform. The mounting surface should be flat and steady. If you install the TV on a soft floor, make sure that the floor is not damaged by the weight of the TV
• This TV set may be used only with Toshiba stand listed on page 32. Use with other stands may result in instability, causing possible injury.
• Place the TV far enough away from the walls to allow proper ventilation. This will prevent the TV from overheating and avoid possible damage to the TV Avoid dusty areas too.
Using your "IV
Do not stand or climb on the TV
Do not put any heavy object on top of the TV
Do not place containers with liquids such as drinks, aquariums, or lighted candles on the TV If any foreign material or water leaks into the TV, unplug the power cord and contact your dealer.
Avoid displaying stationary images on your TV screen for extended periods of time. Stationary patterns (such as those generated by computer displays, video games, or stock market reports) can become permanently engrained on the picture tube. This damage is not protected by your warranty because it is the result of misuse. If you wish to use your
TV to display still images, reduce brightness and contrast settings. Never leave a computer or video game display unattended.
Cleaning your TV
• To clean the TV screen:
1. Unplug the TV from the power outlet to avoid possible shock hazard.
2. Use a clean, dry cellulose sponge or chamois cloth to clean TV screen and trim. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaning agents. Liquid spilling into the TV cabinet may cause electric shock or damage the TV
CAUTION
Never use strong solvents such as thinner, benzene, or other chemicals on or near the cabinet, as they can damage the finish of the cabinet.

Introduction
This owner's manual applies to models 32A41 and 36A41, and there are slight differences between them. Model 32A41 is used in this manual for illustration purposes, instructions in this manual are based on using the buttons on the remote control.
Check the model of your TV before using this manual. Write your model and serial numbers in the spaces provided on the cover for your records.
Exploring your new TV
You can operate your TV using the buttons on the front panel or the remote control.
The back panel provides all the terminal connections you will need to connect other equipment to your TV.

Selecting a location for your TV
• Place the TV either on the floor or on the TV stand listed in the "Notice of Possible TV Stand instability" at right.
• Place the TV in a location where light does not directly hit the screen.
• Place the TV far enough from the walls to allow proper ventilation, inadequate ventilation may cause overheating, which may damage the TV.

Connecting your TV
if you have not connected electronic equipment before, or you have been frustrated in the past, you may wish to read this section. (Cables are not supplied.)
• A coaxial cable is the standard cable that comes in from your antenna or cable converter box. Coaxial cables use "F" connectors.
• Audio and video cables are usually color-coded according to use: yellow for video; red and white for audio. The red audio cable is for the stereo right channel; the white audio cable is for the stereo (or mono) left channel, if you look at the back panel of the TV, you will see that the terminals are color-coded in the same manner as the cables.

NOTE REGARDING
PICTURE QUALITY
When connecting video equipment, such as a VCR or DVD player:
- For GOOD picture quality: Use regular video cables.
- For BETTER picture quality: If your equipment has S-video connections, use S-video cables instead of regular video cables.
- For BEST picture quality: If your equipment has component video connections (ColorStream
TM is Toshiba's brand), use component video cables instead of regular or S-video cables. Component video cables come in sets of three.
Note: Do not connect an S-video cable and a regular video cable to
VIDEO-1 (on the TV) at the same time. Doing so will distort the picture.

Connecting a VCR
This connection allows you to watch TV and video programs and record one channel while watching another channel.

Connecting a cable converter box and a VCR
This connection allows you to watch videotapes and watch and record basic and premium cable channels. Tune the TV and
VCR channels to 3 or 4 (whichever channel is vacant in your area), and then use the converter box to change channels.

This connection allows you to watch satellite, VCR, and TV programs.
You can record one TV channel while watching another channel.

• two pairs of audio cables (one single and one pair of audio cables for a mono VCR)

Connecting a DVD player with component video and a VCR
This connection allows you to watch DVD, VCR, and TV programs, and record TV programs. Your TV has ColorStream "_"
(component video) connections. Connecting your TV to a component video-compatible DVD player (such as a Toshiba DVD player with ColorStream
TM) can greatly enhance picture quality and performance.
You will need:
• one coaxial cable
• three pairs of audio cables (two single and one pair of audio cables for a mono VCR)
• two video cables (or, if your DVD player has component video, one video cable and one set of component video cables; see "Note Regarding Picture Quality" on page 5).

Connecting two VCRs
This connection allows you to record (dub/edit) from one VCR to another VCR while watching a videotape.

Preparing the remote control for use
Your TV remote control can operate your TV together with most VCR models and cable TV converters, even if they are different brands.
if you have a Toshiba VCR, your TV remote control is already programmed to operate it (see page 10).
if you have a non-Toshiba VCR and!or cable TV converter, you must first program your remote control so it will operate the other equipment (see pages 11-13).
Installing the remote control batteries
1 Slide the battery cover off the back of the remote control.
Press and slide to remove.

Caution:
Dispose of batteries in a designated disposal area. Do not throw batteries into a fire.
Do not mix battery types or combine used batteries with new ones.
Remove dead batteries immediately to prevent battery acid from leaking into the battery compartment.
If you do not intend to use the remote control for a long time, remove the batteries.

Note:
If your Toshiba TV remote control does not operate all of the features of your VCR or cable
TV converter, you may need to use the remote control that came with your other equipment.

Using the remote control with a VCR or cable TV converter
• To use your TV remote control to operate a VCR, set the
TV/CABLE/VCR
switch to VCR. The shaded buttons shown in the picture below will then operate the VCR; the unshaded buttons will operate the TV as usual.
• To use your TV remote control to operate a cable TV converter, set the TV/CABLE/VCR switch to CABLE. The shaded buttons shown in the picture below will then operate the converter; the unshaded buttons will operate the TV as usual.

Programming the remote control for use with
a non-Toshiba VCR or cable TV converter
Your Toshiba TV remote control is preprogrammed to operate Toshiba brand VCRs and cable TV converters. To program your TV remote control to operate a non-Toshiba VCR or a cable TV converter, follow these steps:

if more than one code is listed, try each one separately until you find one that works.

Set the TV/CBBLE/VCR switch to VCR (for a VCR), or CABLE (for a cable TV converter).

Some newer VCRs respond to either of two codes. These VCRs have a switch

To adjust any TV feature, you must use the menu function. You can access the menus using the buttons on the

Understanding the Auto Power Off feature
The TV automatically turns off after 15 minutes if it is tuned to a vacant channel or a station that has completed its broadcast for the day. This feature does not operate when the TV is in VIDEO mode.
Understanding the Last Mode Memory feature
if the power is cut off while you are viewing the TV, the Last Mode Memory feature automatically turns the TV on when the power is resupplied, if the power is going to be off for a long time and you are going to be away from your TV, unplug the power cord to prevent the TV from turning on in your absence.

Programming the channel memory
The channel memory is the list of TV channels your TV stops on when you press
CHANNEL
i/V.
First, use the TV/CABLE and CH PROGRAM functions (below) to program all active channels in your area into the channel memory. Then use the ADD/ERASE function (page 17) to add/erase individual channels in the memory.

Select a channel in one of the following two ways:

Selecting stereo/SAP broadcasts
The MTS (multi-channel TV sound) feature has the following functions:
• Stereo Sound: Select either high fidelity stereo sound or monaural (mono) sound.

Using the favorite
channel programming feature
The Favorite Channel Programming feature allows you to program up to 12 channels into the favorite channel memory. Once programmed, press the FAY CN V/• buttons on the remote control to scan through your favorite channels only, skipping other channels you do not normally view. Using the closed caption feature
The closed caption feature has two options: captions or text. A caption is a printed version of the dialogue, narration, and/or sound effects of a program.Text is information not related to the program (such as stock or weather reports) that appears onscreen (when provided by individual stations).

These limited warranties extend to the original consumer purchaser or any person receiving this set as a gift from the original consumer purchaser and to no other purchaser or transferee.
Limited One C1) Year Warranty
TACP and THI warrant this product and its parts against defects in materials or workmanship for a period of one (1) year after the date of original retail purchase. During this period, TACP and THI will repair or replace a defective part, at their option, with a new or refurbished part, without charge to you.
TACP/THI Authorized Service Center personnel will come to your home when warranty service is required. Depending on the type of repair required, either the service will be perl_)rmed in your home or the set will be taken to the TACP/THI authorized service center for repair and returned to your home at no cost to you.
Limited Two C2) Year Warranty of Picture Tube
TACP and THI further warrant the picture tube in this product against defects in materials or workmanship for a period of two (2) years after the date of original retail purchase. During this period, TACP and THI will repair or replace a defective picture tube at their option, with a new or refurbished picture tube, without charge to you, except that, ifa defective picture tube is replaced after one (1) year from the date of the original retail purchase, you pay labor charges involved in the replacement.
Rental Units
The warranty for rental units begins with the first rental or thirty (30) days
fi'om the date of shipment to the rental firm, whichever comes first.
Commercial Units
Products sold and used for commercial use have a limited ninety (90) day warranty for all parts, labor and picture tube.
