GENSAN™
User Guide
Overview
Overview
GENSAN™ is a storage integration product which allows Nexio and Versio systems to connect to generic third-party network-attached storage (NAS). It effectively opens up the previously closed Nexio storage system, making media stored as industry standard MOV files available to third party editors and other tools.
To set up GENSAN on a system, you must be using the Nexio 8.2 Software Release on your Nexio and
Versio system, and you must use Nexio Config to configure the system for the GENSAN RAID
Configuration.
Differences between GENSAN and Previous
Storage Methods
Previous Nexio and Versio storage methods required the use of a proprietary SAN (Storage Area
Network) purchased from Imagine Communications. GENSAN allows you to connect to new or existing storage known as a NAS (Network Attached Storage). The customer is responsible for measuring and managing available bandwidth and total storage according to their needs, though Imagine
Communications has tested and validated several different storage vendors and can provide some of that data to you.
Adopting the GENSAN storage provides several key benefits:
Only one storage solution is required for multiple operations. For example, depending on your storage system capabilities, you might be able to access your Nexio and Versio media, your low-resolution Global Proxy media, your graphics files, and other files all with one storage system.
NAS uses a file-based folder structure, as opposed to the block-based structure of the existing Nexio
SAN system. The files are available as part of a network share or UNC path.
Ethernet connection is supported through standard TCP/IP protocols, so an existing Ethernet infrastructure can be used.
Apple's ProRes video codec is supported, in addition to all of our other existing codecs.
Current GENSAN Limitations
To integrate with a standard Windows file system and standard QuickTime-style MOV files, the GENSAN system includes some caveats which remove several features currently available our standard Nexio storage systems. Some of these features will never be supported. Some will be implemented in GENSAN in later software releases.
20-bit audio is not supported. Any incoming 20-bit audio will be padded to 24-bit.
Compressed audio is not properly wrapped in the MOV files as compressed audio. As a result, third party players and editors will not be able to recognize that the audio in our MOV files is compressed.
Compressed audio will, however, play out of our video server properly for downstream devices.

GENSAN™
User Guide Overview
For media with compressed audio, there is currently no support for the option to decompress audio on playout from our video servers.
No support for legacy Nexio servers using AMD processors. The memory and processor requirements for GENSAN are too high for older-generation Nexios.
Media IDs are not supported. GENSAN uses Reference files instead.
Subclip IDs are not supported. Automation controllers are encouraged to play clip segments instead of dividing up larger clips into subclips.
Trimming of clips is not supported.
Consolidation of large clips is not supported.
Sliding recordings are not supported.
There is no support for a CIFS Server (NLE Gateway) attached to the system.
While a clip is loaded in a Nexio channel, the file on disk cannot be renamed or deleted.
The maximum length of a recording is 12 hours.
The MediaBase thumbnails take some time to generate inside NXOS and other MediaBase applications.
The failover of storage controllers isn't immediate in some storage systems.
No user accounts are enabled when using NXOS or FTP Client. Use the generic Administrator and
Guest accounts.
Platforms configured for the FILM video standards are not supported.
Audio tracks in MOV files are written out as all stereo or all audio. It is not possible for a Nexio to write out a mixture of some stereo audio tracks and some mono.
The maximum ID name length is 32 characters. Any media copied onto the GENSAN storage with an
ID longer than that will be ignored.
You must wait two minutes before playing a growing clip. You should also not play that part of a clip in record that is within two minutes of the current end of the clip.
It can take up to one minute before a new clip is seen in the NXOS MediaBase.

Configure GENSAN
Configure GENSAN
If the Nexio 8.2 Software Release is not already installed on your system, consult the Nexio 8.2 Software
Installation Guide to learn how to install it with the Nexio Setup application.
After you have installed Nexio 8.2 on your system, follow the steps in this section to configure each platform to connect to the GENSAN storage system.
Before Configuring
Before you configure your system, you must know the following information:
The share location where files are stored on the NAS.
For example, \\xxx.xx.xx.xx\sharename
The login credentials of the share location.
Note: Ensure the share location is available for external connections, with permissions set and sharing enabled.
Configure the Share Connection
The following steps allow you to connect your Nexio and Versio software and other Windows applications to your GENSAN storage system.
1. To validate access to your NAS location, test the share connection:
Open a Windows CMD prompt and run the following "net use" command, inserting your own computer name, share name, username, and password: net use \\[ComputerName]\[ShareName] /user:[UserName] [Password]
/persistent:no
Example of a successful command:
If the command is successful, please continue with the following step. If it returns an error, please contact your IT technician to troubleshoot access to your NAS location.
2. Create a "net use" batch file: a. Right-click on your desktop and select New > Text Document. b. Name the file sharewakeup.bat. c. You are warned about changing a file extension. Click Yes to confirm the change. d. Double-click the file to edit it. e. Type in the "net use" command that you successfully tested in step 1. f. Save the file and close it.
3. Move the file to Windows Startup:

3. New fields appear in the Server Settings tab specifically for GENSAN. Use the controls to configure your system.
Note: All fields are case-sensitive.
GenSanSource MediaDir: This is the name of the folder which contains all your MOV media files on your NAS storage hardware. Do not include the network path, only the folder name (for example, Media). Your MediaDir folder must be manually created within your network share.
GenSanSource NetworkShare: The UNC main path to the shared folder (MediaDir) on your NAS storage hardware. Do not add the actual folder name to the path. For example, if your shared folder is at \\Storage\share\Media, only enter \\Storage\share
DirSync File Copy: This is responsible for the File Copy functionality. When a clip is directly copied to the Media Directory folder, DirSync acknowledges the new media and it will be seen globally within the Nexio Mediabase.
No more than three nodes may have File Copy enabled within your Nexio domain. We recommend enabling File Copy on nodes used for File Transfer activity.
4. Configure the rest of the system as described in the Nexio Config 8.2 User Guide.
5. Close Nexio Config.
Launch the LLM
To launch the LLM, double-click the LLM icon on the desktop.
When an LLM launches successfully in GENSAN mode, you will see a grey (healthy) Logical Disk.
Troubleshooting
If the LLM launches with no logical disk, please check the following:
1. Ensure your current Nexio system can access the Network Share location. If access is denied, please contact your IT department to confirm your shares and permissions are enabled correctly for SMB >
NAS communication from the Nexio Server.
2. Navigate to your Network share location and confirm the Media Directory folder name matches what was entered in Nexio Config.
