Two-Color
Counters
• Begin building patterns for the child to extend.
Start with blue-green, blue-green, and let the
child continue with the next pair of counters.
Move on to blue-blue-green, then blue-greengreen, and finally, blue-blue-green-green.
Remember to build two full iterations of each
pattern to ensure comprehension.
0-20 Number
Line
• Practice solving addition on the number line
(link provided at left). For example: 3 + 5 = __.
Place your index finger on the number 3. Then,
count on 5 more, sliding your index finger
forward on the number line. The number you
stop on is the answer: 3 + 5 = 8.

Hundred Board
• Cover numbers on the board with counters,
starting with 1–10. Say a number (5) for the
child to locate. Can they find that number
without seeing it? Try giving clues to this
mystery number: “It’s the same as 2 + 3,” “It’s
3 more than 2,” or “It’s 3 less than 8.” Continue
with other numbers before working up to 20.
Two-Color
Counters
• Roll the die to get a number (6). Place that
many counters of one color in the ten-frame.
Say, “I have 6 counters. How many more do
I need to make 10?” Encourage the child to
count up from 6 to 10, adding counters to
fill the ten-frame. Ask, “How many counters
did you add (4)?” This shows that 4 is the
difference between 10 and 6. Say the number
sentence aloud: 10 – 6 = 4. Repeat several
times with different numbers.

• Practice making numbers using the chart (link
provided at left). Say a number (5). The child
will fill the left column with blue counters (3),
the middle column with green counters (2),
and display the total in the right column (5,
any color). Then, write the number sentence
on the paper: 3 + 2 = 5. Continue with other
quantities and number combinations, working
up to 10.
• Another way to model subtraction is to place
the ten-frames side by side. Add a different
number of counters to each frame and
compare the difference. Ask, “How many
more counters does Frame A have than
Frame B? That’s the difference between the
two numbers!” Make sure to say the number
sentence aloud each time you practice.

• Practice solving subtraction on the number
line (link provided at left). For example:
7 - 2 = __. Place your index finger on the
larger number, 7. Then, count back 2 numbers,
sliding your index finger back on the number
line. The number you stop on is the answer:
7 - 2 = 5.
