Achieving the ideal volume and loudness for an audio CD (Mastering)

Here’s how you can apply a final mastering effect (the Mastering Tool Kit) to your mixdown, in order to produce a finished song. The Mastering Tool Kit is an effect that separately processes the high, mid, and low-frequency regions to make the volume more consistent. This will make the entire song sound louder and more “finished,” so that it can be made into a CD at an optimal volume level.

If desired, you can create an audio CD without mastering. Perform this step as you wish.

Mastering can be performed only for 44.1 kHz/16-bit stereo files.

1.

Press [MASTERING].

The MIXDOWN / MASTERING MENU screen (Screen Guide; p. 196) will appear.

2.

Press[F2](Mastering) or use CURSOR [ ] [ ] to select the MASTERING icon then press

[ENTER].

The SELECT MASTERING SOURCE popup / SELECT AUDIO FILE popup (Screen Guide; p. 198) will appear.

In the SELECT MASTERING SOURCE popup, you can press [F1](Listen) to audition the file at the cursor location.

3.

Move the cursor to the mixdown file (or other file) that you want to master, and press

[F5](Execute).

The MASTERING screen (Screen Guide; p. 199) will appear.

The MASTERING screen shows the major parameters of the mastering tool kit.

Press [PLAY ( )] to play back the WAV file while you adjust the parameters. For details on the parameters, refer to “MASTERING screen” (Screen Guide; p. 199).

In the MASTERING screen, you can press [F2](Library) to access the MASTERING TOOL KIT LIBRARY popup. Here you can select or register your favorite settings.

4.

Turn the MASTER knob to MAX.

If you mastering without setting the MASTER knob to MAX, the volume will be lower. You should leave this knob at MAX unless you are creating a fade-in or fade-out.
