An unqualified ARET command displays the current automatic return setting.
The ARET command is used during operation of the
ACCEPT and INPUT FORM commands to determine whether INFO should skip automatically to another input field if the length of a data entry matches the length of the corresponding input field.
If the setting is on, INFO continues to the next specified input field when the maximum input width of the current item has been reached.
If the setting is off, INFO does not skip to another input field, but rather allows you to complete the entry with a
<RETURN>. If the width of the value entered is greater than the width of the input field, or if some other error in the data entered is detected, INFO issues an error message and allows you to re-enter a value for that input field.
With the ARET setting on, you can save keystrokes during data entry where potential truncation of the entered data does not cause problems in an application. However, in many data entry applications, when data is entered that is wider than a predefined input width, you may wish re-entry of that data or some other special handling to occur. For such cases, it is preferable for the ARET setting to be off
(N).
By default the ARET setting is off (N). If you have your own copy of the INFO message file, you can change the
ARET setting so that it retains its setting from session to session. See the chapter ‘Controlling default assignments’ for more information.
