arguments
IF_name | PG_name | RP_name | SF_name the INFO file to be changed.
[SMART | DUMB] you can tell INFO to verify or not to verify changes to the file.
SMART directs INFO to verify that inserted lines and changed text are valid for the current report, program, input form, or special form. SMART is the default mode for the CHANGE command, except when you also specify the SYSTEM option.
If you try to insert an invalid new line, INFO rejects the line and issues an error message. If you change text on an existing line so that the command is invalid, INFO aborts the change process and issues an error message.
In addition, INFO ensures that changes to a program do not violate program section boundaries, and that changes to a report do not violate column content and heading correspondence.
DUMB directs INFO not to verify any modified or inserted text during CHANGE execution. DUMB is the default mode when you use CHANGE to edit system files.
[PRINT] sends a copy of the source file to your spool file
before you make any changes to it. If you include the
PRINT option for an ASCII file, INFO assumes that all data in the file is printable; it does not perform any data conversion before printing.

notes discussion
n
Before you use the INSERT or REPLACE requests on a source file, be sure to take the following steps:
1) Format any of the system variables, $CHR#, $DAT#, and
$NUM#, that are referenced in the source file (see the
FORMAT command for instructions to do this).
2) Relate all data files to be used when the source file is executed, in the order in which they were related when the source file was defined.
n
Note that if you save the move or copy range of a program file to an INFO file, INFO creates a directory entry for the saved file and generates a PROGRAM SECTION ONE statement at the beginning of the saved file. If the first saved statement is an even-numbered program statement,
INFO generates a PROGRAM SECTION TWO statement immediately following the PROGRAM SECTION ONE statement. If you save to an ASCII file, INFO does not perform any validity checking on the saved file.
n
Be careful if you change an ASCII text file that contains
INFO program or report text that you want INFO to use subsequently. If you use the CHANGE command to edit the file, INFO does not perform any validity checking on lines in the file. You must ensure that the format and syntax of the program/report lines are correct.
In the following discussion, the term source file means an
INFO program, report, special form, or input form. Unless otherwise specified, all CHANGE options apply to each of the four INFO source files.
When you enter a CHANGE command, INFO starts a dialog with the prompt ENTER OPTIONS>. You can then make changes to the file using one of the CHANGE options. See 'Table CHANGE-1, Change options'.
66 Commands INFO Reference Manual
CHANGE
Many of the CHANGE options reference the current line of the source file. When INFO first begins the CHANGE dialog, it considers the current line to be the top of the file, just before the first line, and displays BEGINNING OF
FILE. Subsequent options cause INFO to point to other lines as current. REPLACE, CHANGE, COPY, DELETE and MOVE first affect the current line. The options that involve putting lines between existing lines, like INSERT,
LOAD and the second phase of COPY or MOVE, insert immediately after the current line.
To stop the CHANGE processing, use the Q (quit) option to save all the changes you requested and return you to
ENTER COMMAND >. You can also use the K (kill) option to stop editing without saving any of the changes.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS when changing
INFO source files when replacing or inserting lines
When changing any INFO source file, use any of the options described in Change-1 to change the contents of the source file. You can request that the CHANGE session operate in SMART or DUMB mode.
When you issue an unqualified REPLACE for any source file, or you request an unqualified INSERT for a program, input form, or special form, INFO prompts with ENTER
TEXT:
When you issue an unqualified INSERT for a report, INFO issues a prompt appropriate to the current line for the file:
ENTER COLUMN CONTENT>, if the current line is a heading line, or ENTER COLUMN HEADING>, if the current line is a report item definition.
In any of the above cases, enter your changes or a
<RETURN> to abort the request and return to the ENTER
OPTIONS> prompt.
INFO Reference Manual Commands 67
CHANGE when revising programs when revising reports
When you change a program, INFO automatically renumbers the lines in the program on leaving the
CHANGE editor. These numbers do not affect program execution. They are strictly for reference. After inserting lines in a program and when the mode setting is SMART,
INFO ensures that the odd/even program section sequence is still correct. If necessary, INFO inserts a
PROGRAM SECTION statement to maintain the odd/even program section sequence.
If you want to insert lines before the first existing program line, specify TOP, then INSERT. INFO generates a
PROGRAM SECTION ONE statement before the inserted lines and deletes the original PROGRAM SECTION ONE statement.
If you repeatedly try to point beyond the last line, INFO might alter the number of the last line. However, this cannot affect how the program works, and INFO renumbers the program the next time you issue a
CHANGE command.
INFO saves each column definition on two lines in the report file. The first line includes spacing instructions, column content, and any specified options. The second line includes all the elements of the column heading.
INFO preserves this separation when you use the
CHANGE editor.
When you enter a new report line using the INSERT or
REPLACE option, INFO takes you through a dialog parallel to column definition. The prompts you receive depend on your location in the report. Remember that
INSERT starts inserting after the current line.
If the current line is a column heading, or a column definition that appears in the second or subsequent line of the report, INFO first prompts with ENTER COLUMN
CONTENT>. Respond by entering an item name, text string, arithmetic expression, space saver, tab indicator, or equal sign (=), as described in the REPORT command.
68 Commands INFO Reference Manual
CHANGE
Because only the first line of a multi-line report can have column heading information defined for each report item,
INFO ensures that any changes you make do not affect this sequence, as follows:
1) If you replace an existing column definition line with an equal sign to begin a new report line, INFO deletes all column-heading lines that follow the replaced line.
2) If you replace the first existing equal sign with a report item definition to lengthen the first line of the report, INFO inserts blank column-heading lines for each column definition line that follows the replacement line until it encounters a line break (an equal sign).
To avoid getting the next ENTER REPORT OPTIONS> prompt, place a comma at the end of your column content response.
If you do not terminate the previous entry with a comma,
INFO prompts with ENTER REPORT OPTIONS>. Follow the REPORT command instructions for entering options.
If the current line is on the first line of the report, you get the ENTER COLUMN HEADINGS> prompt.
If the current line is a column definition on the first line of the report, INFO first prompts ENTER COLUMN
HEADINGS>. Enter a new heading for the column, following the rules or the REPORT command.
You can enter <RETURN> to request that INFO not change the headings. If you do this, INFO tries to fit the headings to the column width if that has been changed. If the headings are wider than the new column width, INFO truncates the right-hand characters from the headings.
If your report width changes, INFO recentres the title to fit the report. If you want to change the title, position the cursor to the title line and use the CHANGE or REPLACE options to make the desired changes. You cannot change the number of lines in a report title by deleting or inserting lines, or by inserting an equal sign specification within the existing title.
INFO Reference Manual Commands 69
CHANGE when moving or copying lines
When you request a MOVE or COPY option during a
CHANGE command, you must first indicate the range of lines to be moved or copied Use the positioning options to locate the first line you want to move or copy. Then follow either of these two procedures to indicate the last line to be moved or copied:
1) Issue the MOVE or COPY option and specify the number of lines or a search string to delineate the end of the range. INFO marks the current line as the starting line of the move/copy range and locates the ending line using the specified number or search string.
or
2) Issue an unqualified MOVE or COPY option. INFO marks the current line as the starting line and prompts you to indicate the ending line, as follows: MOVE WHAT> for a move request, or COPY WHAT> for a copy request. Use the positioning options to locate the last line to be moved or copied, and then enter another unqualified MOVE or
COPY option. INFO marks the located line as the ending line. If you try to mark a line that precedes the starting line as an ending line, INFO issues an error message and returns you to the ENTER OPTIONS> prompt. You cannot move or copy title lines in a report; if you try to do so, INFO issues an error message and aborts the request.
After you indicate the range of lines, INFO prompts MOVE
TO WHERE> for a move request, or COPY TO WHERE> for a copy request. Again use the positioning options to locate the target line for the move or copy operation. The target line can be anywhere in the file, except within the range of lines to be moved or copied. When you locate the target line, enter another unqualified MOVE or COPY, and INFO completes the operation.
In response to the prompt for the target location, or at any time after INFO issues the prompt but before you mark the target line, you can enter the SAVE option to save the range of lines marked for the MOVE or COPY option. Use the SAVE option as described in Table CHANGE-1, except that you must specify an INFO or an ASCII text file name; you cannot enter an unqualified SAVE command in this instance.
70 Commands INFO Reference Manual
CHANGE
If you save the move/copy range of a report to an INFO file, INFO creates a directory entry for the saved file that has the same attributes and contains the same report definition information as the report file from which you issue the SAVE option. If you send the saved information to an ASCII text file, INFO cannot create a directory entry for the file that contains the report attributes. See
'Considerations when using ASCII text files' in this command reference for information about using reports from system text files.
After moving or copying program lines, INFO determines whether or not to generate or delete PROGRAM SECTION statements to preserve the odd/even program section sequence as follows:
1) Following a move, INFO checks the statements at the beginning and end of the moved text at the target location, and the statements remaining at the source location. If necessary, INFO generates or deletes a PROGRAM
SECTION statement at these locations.
2) Following a copy, INFO checks the statements at the beginning and end of the copied text. If necessary, INFO generates or deletes a PROGRAM SECTION statement at the two locations.
1) Following a move or copy operation within a program file, the program line numbers may be out of sequence. INFO renumbers the program when you end the CHANGE session. Alternatively, you can issue the SAVE option;
INFO renumbers the program lines when it processes the
SAVE.
After moving or copying report lines, INFO checks to ensure that report item definitions and column headings are sequenced properly. If necessary, INFO generates or deletes column heading lines, as follows:
1) If INFO finds a report item definition line without a column heading in the first line of the report, INFO adds a blank column heading line for that report item line.
INFO Reference Manual Commands 71
CHANGE
2) If INFO finds a report item definition line with a matching column heading line following a line break, INFO deletes the column- heading line.
3) If INFO finds a column heading line without a matching report, item definition line, INFO deletes the column heading.
When INFO generates or deletes lines, it issues an error message warning you to examine the file to see if further editing is necessary.
You can terminate the move/copy request at any time with the KILL option.
when loading from a file
When processing the LOAD option in DUMB mode, INFO does not verify the lines loaded. When loading a file in
SMART mode, INFO verifies each line of the file. If
INFO finds an invalid line, it aborts the load request and issues an error message, leaving the file you wanted to change in the condition it was before you issued the LOAD option.
When loading a program, INFO examines the first and last of the loaded lines to ensure correctness of the odd/even section sequence. If necessary, INFO generates or deletes a PROGRAM SECTION statement at the two locations.
When loading a report, INFO loads only report itemdefinition and column heading lines; it ignores title lines.
INFO checks that report item definitions and column headings are in proper order, as described under
'Considerations when revising reports'. If necessary, INFO generates or deletes column heading lines, as follows:
1) If the target location for the load is in the first line of the report, that is, before an equal sign (=), INFO adds a blank column heading line for any loaded report item definition line that does not have a column heading line.
2) If the target location for the load is in the second or subsequent line of the report, that is, after an equal sign
(=), INFO does not load any column heading lines into the file you are changing.

CHANGE when using
ASCII text files
When using the CHANGE command with an ASCII text file, INFO operates in the DUMB mode. You cannot specify the SMART mode in this situation. Use any of the options in Table CHANGE-1 to change lines in the text file. Text file names cannot be longer than 32 characters.
If you want INFO to use a program or report that exists in a text file, you must take the following steps to load the text file into an existing INFO file:
1) Create an INFO source file of the same type (such as program or report) as the ASCII text file. The source file can contain commands. Use the PROGRAM command to create a program file or the REPORT command to create a report file, following the instructions for those commands. If you use an INFO report file that contains an existing report definition, it must reference the same data file items as the report to be loaded from the text file.
2) Enter the CHANGE command and the INFO program or report file.
3) Use the LOAD option to load the text file into the
CHANGE file.
4) Perform any necessary edits.
5) Use the QUIT option to exit the CHANGE session.
You can now request that INFO execute the program or report.

Append text. Requests that INFO append text to the end of the current line.
If you include the string specification, INFO appends the string contents to the end of the current line. String can be any combination of characters, separated from the APPEND option by one space; if you enter two spaces following the APPEND, INFO assumes that the second space is the first character of the string.
If you do not include the string specification,

You can also enter all of the command specifications on a single line. When you use this option, you can also specify:
1) the number of lines INFO should search for the FROM text
2) whether to change only the first instance of the string in the searched lines or to change all instances of that string
To enter the command in this way, follow the syntax below:
C/old-text/new-text[/[line-count] [G]] where: n old-text and new-text are the string to be replaced and the replacement string, respectively.
n
Line-count is an integer that tells INFO how many lines to search for the old-text. If a linecount is not entered, the other specifications apply only to the current line.
n requests that INFO globally change all old-text strings in the file. If
G
is not entered, INFO only changes the first occurrence of the old-text in each line.
To separate the old and new text, instead of the slash (/), you can use any character (except a blank space) that does not appear within either string.
