DECODE marks one or more of your INFO report, program, or form files for decoding or compiling. Use the
DECODE command to notify INFO that a report, program, or form must be decoded or compiled before it is next executed. Once a non-data file has been decoded, INFO automatically compiles the non-data file just before next executing it.
For your reports, programs, or forms to execute correctly, you must use the DECODE command in the following situations:
When you use an editor or other tool outside of INFO to change a report, program, or form, use the DECODE command to notify INFO that the report, program, or form should be decoded or compiled again before it is next executed.
When you change the characteristics of any item in a data file that is used or referenced by a previously decoded or compiled report, program, or form, you must use the
DECODE command to mark for recompiling each report, program, or form that references the changed data file in any way. Otherwise, any previously compiled report, program, or form cannot use the changed data file correctly.

DECODE
When you use the EDIT or CHANGE command to edit an
INFO report, program or form, INFO automatically marks the edited file for redecoding or recompiling. No use of the DECODE command is necessary in these situations.
If the system variable $DECODE_EXT_PG is set to 1, when the DECODE * command is issued, no external programs, forms or reports will be marked for decoding or compiling.
