item-1 character_item to be converted.

item-2 numeric_item or date_item to receive the converted data item.

item-3 optional numeric_item to receive an error return code.

Tries to convert item-1 to item-2. Item-2 is left unchanged if conversion fails. Optional item-3 set to 0 if conversion succeeds, otherwise set to 1.
