replaces occurrences of one substring with another or with null.
arguments
FIRST replace the first occurrence of item-1 in item-2.
ALL replace all occurrences of item-1 in item-2.
LEADING replace item-1 if it starts in the first character positions of item-2.
item-1 a system variable or literal string containing the substring to be replaced.
item-2 a datafile item or system variable to be modified..
item-3 a system variable or literal containing the replacement substring. Null if omitted. Maximum of 50 characters.
item-4 a datafile item or system variable to be modified.
If omitted, item-2 is modified. Maximum of 1000 characters.

Item-1 and Item-3 may be one or more characters (they do not need to be the same length). Result will be truncated or space filled at right if necessary.

In effect REPLACE is MOVE with replacement, and therefore mimics MOVE interactively and in odd/even program sections.
