C.READ FIRST Warning: No helmet is as safe as riding safely! Motorcycle riding has special personal hazards. The risks that are being taken by riding a motorcycle can be reduced but not eliminated by wearing a helmet. Warning: No helmet can protect the wearer against all foreseeable impacts! There are limits to the physical size and weight of the helmet a person is willing to wear. The ability of a helmet to protect the wearer is limited. No helmet can protect the wearer against all foreseeable impacts. Warning: Use only a helmet that fits snugly all around your head! Fasten the chin strap securely under your chin! A helmet can provide protection only to the extent that your head is covered with the helmet. The use of a properly fitted, securely fastened helmet can lessen the risk of death or permanent impairment due to head injury. For maximum head protection, the helmet must be properly fitted and should provide adequate peripheral vision. The retention system must be securely fastened under the chin. Failure to have a proper fit and to securely fasten the helmet is dangerous as the helmet could come off in an accident resulting in severe head injury or death. For detailed information regarding proper fit, see section D. Warning: Never use the helmet with the lining removed! If the lining is not installed before use, the helmet may not fit properly and could come off in an accident, resulting in severe head injury or death. 6 Warning: After your helmet has protected you from an impact or suffered a hit, you must get a new one! Your helmet is designed to distribute the force incurred during an impact over a wide area. Even if your helmet looks visibly undamaged, its useful life has come to an end after only one impact during riding, i.e. an accident where you and your helmet hit the ground or an object. In an impact, the helmet’s impact absorbing liner becomes compacted. Once this has happened, the helmet no longer has the ability to absorb further impacts. Your helmet may look the same, but it will not provide protection in an accident. Therefore, a helmet that has experienced an impact should be destroyed and replaced. Warning: Don’t ride with an open Face Shield! Riding without the Face Shield or with an open Face Shield can result in injury to the eyes and face from stones, dust, insects and other flying objects. The sun visor, when lowered, will offer a certain amount of protection from light impact from stones or insects but does not provide protection against all hazards. 7 english Warning: Any helmet that has been subjected to a violent impact should be replaced! C.READ FIRST Warning: Never modify your helmet! It is very dangerous to drill holes or to cut the shell and/ or the shock absorbing liner. Modification can seriously weaken the helmet. Modifying the retention system weakens it, increasing the likelihood of snapping during impact. Removing parts such as the mouth guard or rubber face molding can expose edges that may injure you in an accident. Always use approved SCHUBERTH parts when replacing shields, screws, or any other parts. A weakened helmet will not provide head protection. Warning: Don’t mistreat your helmet! Never ride with the helmet hanging from the helmet holder, and do not hang the helmet from angled supports such as a mirror. Do not sit on or throw your helmet. You should not expose the liner of your helmet to strong sunlight and excessive heat such as near heaters or where temperatures exceed 50 °C (122 °F). Avoid spraying insect repellent chemicals (such as 'naphthalene') near the helmet. Mistreating your helmet will damage the shell and impact absorbing liner, reducing the helmet’s ability to protect you in an accident. Warning: Clean your helmet carefully! Only use lukewarm tap water, never benzene, gasoline, glass cleaner or other solvents. Your helmet can be seriously damaged by these substances without visible damage. A helmet damaged or weakened by a cleaning agent may not provide head protection in an accident, resulting in serious personal injury or death. 8 english Warning: Always check your helmet before every ride! 1. Check the Face Shield and sun visor. 2.Check the correct function of the shield and visor mechanics. 3.Check for cracks in the helmet. Strong acid (e.g. battery acid) can damage the shield bases. If you find cracks or damage, stop using the helmet immediately. 4.Check helmet for deterioration. If you find deterioration in any part of a component, either replace that component or get a new helmet. If these parts come loose and/or fall off while you are riding, your vision may be blocked, which could cause an accident resulting in serious personal injury or death. 5.Check the security of the retention system (see section G. 3.). For checking instructions and procedure see also section F. (before every ride) of this manual. Warning: Maintain your helmet shields (shield and sun visor) in good condition! If your shields become too scratched or uncleanable, replace them with new ones. Impaired visibility may cause accidents. Clean your shields only with mild soap diluted in tap water. Rinse well with clean tap water, and dry with a soft cloth. Never use benzene, gasoline, glass cleaner or any other solvents. Do not attach stickers or adhesive tape to the shields, as this will weaken the hard coating, damaging the shields. Do not drive with a dim or blurred shield. Impaired vision can cause an accident resulting in serious personal injury or death. 9 C.READ FIRST Warning: Never use the tinted sun visor at night, in poor visibility conditions or in tunnels! The tinted visor reduces light transmission and should never be used in situations where vision is impaired (i.e. at night, in poor visibility conditions or in tunnels). Warning: Do not repaint the helmet! Repainting of your helmet is not recommended. Paint and thinner can damage the helmet and reduce its ability to provide head protection in an accident. Warning: Replace the helmet after no more than five years! The useful life of the helmet depends on its use and care. We recommend that this helmet has to be replaced after no more than five years from its date of purchase. Caution: To avoid liner damage, do not hang the helmet on the mirror or the handlebar. Caution: Do not carry the helmet on the motorcycle’s helmet storage lock while riding in order to avoid exhaust pipe burns, tire abrasion, and strap damage to the helmet. Caution: Keep the helmet outside the reach of pets to avoid the helmet being damaged by chewing, scratching or other mistreatment. Caution: Do not expose the helmet to solvents including gasoline or any fumes thereof in order to avoid damage to shields, shell, plastic components and interior. 10 1. CONFORMANCE TO STANDARDS The helmet conforms to the DOT 218 Standard and the ECE R 22.05 standard. These test standards guarantee conformity to defined safety standards in respect of impact absorption, penetration resistance, lateral rigidity, retention system and field of vision. The approval guarantees that you have approval for the USA and all the countries of the European Union as well as countries which recognize the ECE R 22.05 or DOT 218 standard. It is only legal to use it in countries where these standards are valid. 2. ECE APPROVAL and DOT-Label (fixed to the comfort padding of the retention system) Certifying authority Certification number 05123456 ECE test standard Serial number 051234/P-1234 DOT-Label (fixed to the rear side of the helmet) 11 english D.THE HELMET D. the helmet 3. OUTER SHELL The outer shell of the SR1 combines an aerodynamically optimal shape. It consists of glassfibre reinforced vinylester (GRP) with polyethylene fibre reinforced layers. This structure gives the helmet the high level of strength and rigidity needed for your protection*. * The helmet is designed to provide the safety performance required by the United States DOT 218 Standard in combination with the European ECE R 22.05 Standard Warning: The safety helmet is designed to absorb the effect of only one impact. The helmet must be replaced after a fall, accident or any other impact. Note: For cleaning instructions see section H.1. (care and maintenance – outer shell) of this manual. 12 For optimized impact absorption properties, the inner shell of the helmet consists of several components. This combination of different elements achieves better absorption and distribution of impact forces and gives you a high level of protection. The large side sections ensure the helmet provides optimum fit and the greatest comfort. 6. DOWN FORCE (D-FORCE) SPOILER The SR1's D-Force spoiler can assist the rider in maintaining proper head angle in differing riding conditions, and assure optimal aerodynamic performance, by varying the amount of downward force applied to the helmet by the airstream. Two spoiler positions are available. Down position: Standard downthrust, recommended for motorcycles with high fairing, and riding in an upright position. Up position: Achieves 60 % greater downward thrust, recommended for motorcycles with low or no fairing, and riding in a crouched position. 13 english 5. INNER SHELL D.THE HELMET 7. AERODYNAMICS All SCHUBERTH motorcycle helmets are tested in SCHUBERTH’s own wind tunnel, to optimize stability, reduce air resistance and buffeting and to afford directional stability. 8. AEROACOUSTICS We have paid particular attention to improving the acoustic properties of the SR1 with no detriment to comfort. Various measures developed in SCHUBERTH’s wind tunnel (such as special adaptation of the wind deflector in the chin area and the shape of the neck pad) as well as the choice of special materials ensure that the helmet does not pull and makes the helmet quieter**. This enables relaxed and enhanced concentration - especially on long journeys. A quiet helmet is characterized by low wind noise. Wind noise arises through turbulent swirling of the air that flows around the helmet. ** Acoustic values can vary depending on type of motorcycle, fairing design, riding posture and body size. Warning: The actual road speed can be underestimated slightly as a result of the acoustic optimization of the helmet and the accompanying low wind noise. I.e. don’t rely on your sense of hearing to judge road speed - check your speedometer. Note: Please note that with faired motorcycles strong eddy currents occur at the edges of the wind shadow. This can considerably reduce the aero-acoustic performance of the helmet. The fairing of the motorcycle should be adapted so that the departing turbulence does not strike the bottom surface of the helmet. 14 Tip: To ensure the helmet is as quiet as possible, the fit on the underside of the helmet is important. This area needs to be well sealed off. If you have a slim neck, it is advisable to use a scarf additionally. aeroacousitcally non-critical area aeroacoustically critical area aeroacousitcally non-critical area 15 english D.THE HELMET SOUND-REDUCTION SYSTEM The innovative sound-reduction system allows the sound level in the helmet to be varied, thus enabling sounds to be experienced at different volumes. Two settings are available. Open: In this setting sound levels are higher. Closed: In this setting, sound levels are lower. Warning: Riding with the sound-reduction system in the closed position can prevent the rider from hearing important traffic and warning sound (e.g., horns, bells, approaching vehicles), and is recommended only for open road, rather than traffic conditions. 16 english 9. WIND DEFLECTOR (included with helmet) By fitting the wind deflector supplied, undesired entry of wind from the airstream can be prevented. The device also further reduces the noise level in the helmet. To fit, slide the retaining pocket of the wind deflector gradually outwards from the centre into the guide gap between the interior of the helmet and the outer shell. Tip: The fit of the underside of the helmet is very important for further reducing the sound level in the helmet. Take care to ensure that the helmet is properly closed. For smaller neck sizes we recommend that you wear a scarf. 10. RETENTION SYSTEM The retention system on the SR1 consists of a chinstrap that is further secured with neckbands at the rear of the shell (anti rolloff system, see section D.14). CHIN STRAP WITH DOUBLE-D FASTENING The double-D fastener lets you adjust the length of the chinstrap easily and precisely every time you put on the strap and fits tightly and individually to your chin. Closing and pulling tight 1. Thread the free end of the chinstrap, as shown in the pictures opposite, through the double-D fastener. 17 D.THE HELMET 2. Pull the strap tight. The chinstrap should be taut but not uncomfortable. Then feed the free end of the strap back through the first ring of the fastener. Tip: To ensure the correct position we recommend that you grasp the helmet by the sides with both hands and use gentle rotating movements on the head, and then pull the chinstrap tight again. 3. The free end of the strap is tucked away and fastened by means of the snap. This prevents the strap from flapping in the wind. Loosening and opening 1. Release the snap and pull on the little red lug of the double-D fastener so that the strap is loosened. 2. Now thread the free end of the chin strap out of the double-D fastener. Warning: Never ride without ensuring that the chin strap is properly fastened, correctly adjusted and in the right position. If the chin strap is not properly adjusted or fastened, it is possible that in the event of an accident the helmet could come loose from your head. 18 english Warning: Never open the chin strap while riding. 11. Face Shield WITH INTEGRATED PINLOCK®-LENSE The Face Shield with integrated Pinlock®-lense is a doublewall Face Shield that reduces fogging. The two visor plates are separated from each other and sealed with transparent, flexible silicone. The inner visor plate is fixed in place by eccentric pins, which pretensions the two visor plates towards each other and creates the sealing effect. An insulating air cushion is thus formed between the visor’s main plate – i.e. the outer plate – and the inner plate, which prevents any fogging up of the inner plate. COATING The main plate has a HighClear® anti-scratch coating on both sides. Note: The helmet should never be used to hold gloves or any other objects as this may damage the scratch-sensitive Pinlock® inner Face Shield. Note: The Pinlock® inner visor is supplied with a protective film. Remove this film before using the helmet for the first time. Note: The Pinlock® inner visor may only be used in conjunction with the SCHUBERTH main Face Shield that has been specially designed for this purpose. Other Face Shields must not be fitted. 19 D.THE HELMET Opening the Face Shield To open the Face Shield, grip the finger tab below the Face Shield on the left-hand side using the thumbs and push the Face Shield upwards to the desired position. Closing the Face Shield Grip the finger tab and push the Face Shield downwards with a movement of the hand. Locking the Face Shield To lock the Face Shield when fully closed, move the operating element towards the rear with a movement of the hand. To release the Face Shield again, move the operating element back to its original position. 20 The Face Shield can be changed easily and with the convenient push-release system. It is helpful when changing the Face Shield to place the helmet on a flat surface or on your lap. Removing the Face Shield 1. Close the Face Shield. Press the button of the push-release Face Shield mechanism on one side and hold it down. 2. Move the Face Shield upwards until it is released from its fixing. 3. Repeat steps one and two above on the opposite side of the Face Shield. Fitting a new Face Shield 1. Using both hands, guide the catch pins of the visor into the recess provided for them in the visor mechanism. 21 english CHANGING THE Face shield D.THE HELMET 2. Apply light pressure directed towards the helmet and a closing motion until the visor engages audibly. 3. Check the functioning of the Face Shield mechanism by opening it until it hits the end stop and then closing it again. Replacement Face Shield with Pinlock®-Lense Fitting 1. Lay the replacement lense in the Face Shield in such a way that one side of it is already slotted into the locking pin and the silicone seal is on the side facing the Face Shield. 2. Now grasp the other side of the replacement lense by its upper and lower transverse edges and use your index finger to gently press the end of the visor into a slight 'S' shape. Now you can easily guide the slot over the locking pin and release the replacement lense into place. 22 english 3. The replacement lense should now be positioned in the Face Shield with its lower edge parallel to the lower edge of the Face Shield. If you need to change the positioning of the replacement lense, use the balls of your thumbs to gently bend the Face Shield apart until the inner visor can be adjusted as required. 4. Check all round the visor to make sure that the silicone seal fits tightly and evenly against the Face Shield. Only if this is the case will the anti-misting properties function properly. 5. If you have not done so already, remove the protective film from the replacement lense. If the replacement lense is not air-tight and the Face Shield mists up, either the visor is not correctly in place or the pressure on the seal is inadequate. You can regulate the pressure on the seal by adjusting the eccentric locking pins. To do so, remove the replacement lense, then use a flat object with no sharp-edges to push the locking pins out of the Face Shield carefully from the inside; then rotate them by 180 ° and reinsert them. Fit the replacement lense and check the seal. 23 D.THE HELMET Removal 1. Before starting to remove the replacement lense, first lay the Face Shield on a soft, clean cloth so that its top edge is facing you. 2. To reduce the pretensioning of the Pinlock®-lense slightly if necessary, use the balls of your thumbs to carefully bend the Face Shield sufficiently apart while applying pressure with your thumbs to release the replacement lense and move it approx. 2 - 3 mm forward. 3. Now grip the back of the replacement lense with your index and middle fingers and lift it off the Face Shield. In this position you can easily remove the replacement lense from the locking pin with your thumb. 4. You can now remove the replacement lense from the Face Shield. 24 Note: • to avoid scratching the face schield, never remove or fit the replacement lense unless the visor unit is clean and dry. • When fitting the replacement lense, check that neither dust nor moisture are able to get between the two plates. • When removing or fitting the replacement lense, it is always best to lay the face schield unit on a clean, dry cloth. • Check regularly to ensure that the fit of the silicone seal between the Face Shield and the Pinlock®-lense is tight and even. Note: Never press the locking pins out with your fingers as they may break. Caution: As a result of the double shield lens structure, there is a possibility of greater light reflection in the face schield, especially when riding at night. As a rule, such light reflection is regarded as uncritical due to the absence of misting with this type of shield. However, if this light reflection should cause you difficulties - because of particular sensitivity to it, for example you should refrain from using the replacement lense. Caution: If moisture is present in or has penetrated the airtight area between the two plates, you should remove the replacement lense immediately in order to prevent any interference with visibility. Do not re-fit it until both plates are completely dry (we recommend air-drying). If you should subsequently detect any further penetration of moisture, the replacement lense should not be used on any account and must be replaced. Safety note Check before each journey that the Face Shield and sun visor mechanism are functioning correctly and that the Face Shield and sun visor will provide good visibility. Any dirt should be removed before setting off. Check the Face Shield and sun visor for physical damage and cracks. Severely scratched or matt Face Shields will seriously impair visibility and should be replaced before setting off on a journey. 25 english Note: In view of the strong air pressure acting on the silicone seal when travelling with an open face schield, we recommend riding with a closed face schield at all times to prevent any dirt or moisture from getting inside the helmet. D.THE HELMET Caution: Gasoline, solvent and fuel vapours can cause cracking of the Face Shield. Make sure that the Face Shield is never exposed to such vapours! Never place the helmet on the tank of your bike. 12. INNER LINING The washable, replaceable inner lining of the SR1 offers not only a superb shape but also improved entry and exit of air to and from the helmet. The cheek comfort padding and ear pads provide soft cushioning to the cheeks and the headband cushion offers good positioning around the head. The central head pad ensures comfortable fitting to the head while ensuring that the air channels do not become blocked (see Ventilation systems/Head ventilation, section D.13). The inner lining consists of skin-friendly materials throughout, particularly in areas that come in contact with the head. These are a soft, breathable COOLMAX® material that transports heat and moisture very well, a special noise-reducing Polygene® material with antibacterial properties and a sweat-absorbing Interpower® material. REMOVING THE INNER LINING The inner lining is affixed to the inner shell of the helmet by means of a clamp fastening. It can be removed by pulling it gently out. 26 english Removing the cheek comfort pads 1. Loosen the pins stitched into the cheek pads from the red-marked insertion points on the inner shell. 2. Gently pull the cheek pad away from its fixing. 3. Repeat process for the other cheek pad. Removing the headband cushion 1. Pull the semicircular guide rail of the headband cushion out of the slots of the plastic rail fixed to the inner shell. 27 D.THE HELMET 2. Pull the retaining strap in the neck area out of the guide slot between the inner and outer shells. FITTING THE INNER LINING Fitting the headband cushion The semicircular guide rail stitched onto the face side is used for fixing the cushion, aided by the retaining strap situated in the neck area. 1. Push the semicircular guide rail gradually under the gaps of the plastic rail fixed to the inner shell. 2. Push the retaining strap of the neck cushion gradually into the guide gap between the inner and outer shells. 28 english 3. Arrange the headband cushion within the helmet ensuring that no air channel is blocked. Fitting the cheek comfort pads 1. Fix the cheek pad with the aid of the red-marked plug-in device. 2. Push the retaining strap of the cheek pad into the guide gap between the inner and outer shells. Begin with the lower part of the pad. 29 D.THE HELMET 3. Push the retaining strap with a gentle pressure towards the shell into the guide gap between the inner and outer shells. 4. Repeat steps 1-3 with the other cheek comfort pad. Ear-Pads The ear pads supplied as standard can be positioned individually in the ear area of the helmet by means of a Velcro-type fitting. For stronger padding around the ears, pads with other thicknesses are available as accessories. Note: For an overview of all accessory and parts please visit www.schuberth.com and check the ‘Accessories’ section of your helmet model. Note: When fitting the inner lining, ensure that the ventilation gaps of the head band are positioned over the ventilation 30 Warning: Never ride with any part of the inner lining removed. Warning: Strong heat sources (such as from exhaust) may cause damage to the inner lining. Note: To avoid damage to the inner lining and inner shell, do not hang the helmet over the mirrors or handlebars. 13. VENTILATION SYSTEMS Ventilation device 1 – adjustment of the Face Shield (Face Shield ventilation) The SR1 features a Face Shield that can be adjusted to various positions. You can open the Face Shield depending on the speed so much that your eyes remain protected from unpleasant air draughts. Ventilation device 2 – Face Shield ventilation To ventilate the Face Shield, the SR1 features an inlet vent in the chin area. Regardless of the positioning of the helmet, some 80-90% of the air in the central flow pattern flows into the open air inlet. A deflector ensures that even at low speeds the airflow ventilates the inner side of the Face Shield effectively. Pressing on the lower or upper part of the ventilation element will respectively open or close the air inlet. 31 english channels in the rear of the helmet and that the headband is situated in the centre between the two ventilation channels. D.THE HELMET Ventilation system 3 – head ventilation (Proactive-Dynamic-Ventilation-System) To provide ventilation to the surface of the head, two air inlet fairings are fitted on the upper side of the helmet shell. Air entering these inlets is guided effectively via channels to the top of the head. The advanced cushion system inside the helmet allows direct contact between incoming air and the head, making the collection and removal of heat from the interior through the air outlet vents on the rear of the helmet and in the embedded mesh fabric in the neck area. Moving the ventilation sliders to the rear position opens the ventilation channels in the helmet; if they are in the forward position, the ventilation is closed. The level of ventilation varies with the current speed and sitting position. The maximum volume of air intake is obtained by assuming a sports sitting position. Ventilation device 4 – interior air extraction The SR1 is equipped with a constant air extraction system. Air present in the interior and entering via the ventilation is guided via channels towards the rear of the helmet. The reduced pressure present to the rear of the helmet ensures a constant suction of the air from the inside through the air outlets under the spoiler and in the special mesh material in the neck cushion ensuring a comfortable temperature inside the helmet. 32 english Ventilation system 5 – chin ventilation (2-way chin ventilation) The advanced two-way chin ventilation provides for fresh air at all times around the chin. If required, fresh air entering the air inlet can be diverted through air channels in the cheek comfort pads in such a way that moisture and heat in the cheek pads can be effectively removed from the helmet. You can set chin ventilation as required by means of the operating element on the chin. Switch to centre – ventilation disabled Switch to right – ventilation of cheek pads Switch to left – chin ventilation enabled 33 D. the helmet 14. ADDITIONAL SAFETY FEATURES Anti-roll-off system (A.R.O.S.) The anti-roll-off system specially developed by SCHUBERTH and provided as a safety feature in every SCHUBERTH motorcycle helmet ensures that, when the chinstrap is fastened (see section D.10 for operation of the chinstrap/fastener system) and correctly adjusted: a) the helmet cannot pivot off the head from behind, b) the risk of contact between the chin section of the helmet and the chin or neck of the rider is minimised due to the low angle of tilt and c) the consequences of the helmet hitting the rib cage as the result ofan accident are reduced. Reflective panels Together with the silver reflective strips located laterally at the back of the neck pad, the two reflective panels integrated into the left and right areas under the visor plate help make the motorcycle rider more noticeable on the road, especially in conditions of poor visibility. If the helmet is plain (no decoration), the SCHUBERTH name also appears on the front and back of the helmet in a reflective film. Note: Keep the reflective safety areas clean. 34 1. PUTTING ON THE HELMET Note: See section D.10 for operation of the chin strap and fastening systems. 1. Open the chin strap. 2. Take hold of the lower ends of the chin strap and pull these apart firmly. 3. Place the helmet on your head. 4. Close the chin strap by threading the free end of the strap through the double-D fastener, pull taut and fasten. 5. Ensure that the chin strap passes under your chin and is taut. Note: Check the correct position and length of the chin strap regularly (see section F.2 ‘Checking the chin strap’). 2. REMOVING THE HELMET 1. Open the chin strap by pulling on the red lug of the double-D fastener and pulling the strap out from the metal eyes. 2. Grasp the ends of the strap and pull them firmly apart. 3. Remove the helmet from your head. Tip: To avoid scratching objects where the helmet may be placed, we recommend you close the chin strap after you have taken the helmet off. 35 english E. PUTTING THE HELMET ON AND TAKING IT OFF F. BEFORE EVERY RIDE For your safety you should check the following points before every ride: 1. CHECKING THE HELMET Check the helmet regularly for damage. Small superficial scratches will not affect the protection afforded by the helmet. If more serious damage (cracks, dents, chipped and cracked lacquer, etc) is present, however, the helmet should no longer be used. If necessary we will check your SR1 for any damage at no cost (see section J.1, 'Safety Check'). Note: If your body weight has significantly reduced, you must check whether your helmet is still the correct size for you. 2. CHECKING THE CHINSTRAP (with helmet on and fastened) 1. Check that the chinstrap passes under your chin. 2. Slip your index finger under the chinstrap and pull. If the chinstrap is loose under the chin, it is too long and needs to be tightened. If the chinstrap loosens when you pull it, it is not properly fastened. Undo the chinstrap completely and try fastening it again. Repeat the test. 3. If you are unable to fasten the chinstrap so that it fits firmly against the chin, check that your helmet is still the right size for you. Note: Repeat the test after each adjustment. 36 english Warning: Never ride with the chinstrap unfastened or incorrectly adjusted. The chinstrap should fit correctly and should not become loose when pulled. The fastener is not correctly closed if the chinstrap becomes loose when pulled. 3. CHECKING THE face schield Before every ride, check that the visor is fit for function and that it offers sufficiently good vision. Remove dirt before riding (see ‘Face Shield’, section H.2). Check the visor for mechanical damage and/or cracks. A badly scratched Face Shield is detrimental to vision and must be replaced before riding. Warning: Scratched and/or dirty visors interfere seriously with vision. Change or clean the visor for your safety. Warning: Ensure that the visor is always in good condition. Damaged visors are not safe for riding and should be replaced. Warning: If visability is poor, stop riding. Caution: Never use tinted Face Shields in conditions of poor visibility, when riding at night or in a tunnel. 37 G.FOR YOUR SAFETY 1. SAFETY ADVICE CONCERNING THE HELMET Warning: Never ride without a helmet! Warning: No helmet is as safe as riding safely! Motorcycle riding has special personal hazards. The risks that are being taken by riding a motorcycle can be reduced but not eliminated by wearing a helmet. Warning: No helmet can protect the wearer against all foreseeable impacts! There are limits to the physical size and weight of the helmet a person can wear. The ability of a helmet to protect the wearer is limited. No helmet can protect the wearer against all foreseeable impacts. Warning: Use only a helmet that fits snugly all around your head. Fasten the chin-strap securely under your chin! A helmet can provide protection only to the extent that your head is covered with the helmet. The use of a properly fitted, securely fastened helmet can lessen the risk of death or permanent impairment due to head injury. For maximum head protection, the helmet must be properly fitted. The retention system must be correctly adjusted and securely fastened under the chin. Failure to have a proper fit and to securely fasten the helmet is dangerous as the helmet could come off in an accident resulting in severe head injury or death. For detailed information regarding proper fit, see section D. 38 1. 5.Check the security of the retention system (see section G.3.). For checking instructions and procedure see also section F. (before every ride) of this manual. Warning: Don’t use the helmet for anything than motorcycling! No helmet provides absolute protection from all conceivable impacts. This helmet has been specially developed for motorcycle riding. It may not be suitable for other purposes. 39 english Warning: Always check your helmet before every ride! G.FOR YOUR SAFETY Warning: Replace the helmet after no more than five years! The useful life of the helmet depends on its use and care. We recommend that this helmet has to be replaced after no more than five years from its date of purchase. Warning: Never use the helmet with the lining removed If the lining is not installed before use, the helmet may not fit properly and could come off in an accident, resulting in severe head injury or death. Excessive heat (e.g. exhaust heat) can cause damage tographics, the inner shell of the helmet and the interior lining! Warning: Never modify your helmet! It is very dangerous to drill holes or to cut the shell and/or the shock absorbing liner. Warning: Do not repaint the helmet! Repainting of your helmet is not recommended. Certain types of paint and thinner can damage the helmet and reduce its ability to provide head protection in an accident. Warning: Avoid direct contact with aggressive substances! The direct effect of motor fuels, thinners or solvents can destroy the structure of the inner and outer shell. Make sure the helmet does not come into contact with such substances, even for cleaning purposes! 40 english Warning: Clean your helmet carefully! For cleaning instructions see section H.1. (care and maintenance – outer helmet shell) of this manual. 2. SAFETY ADVICE CONCERNING the Face Shield Warning: Keep your helmet (Face Shield) in good condition! If your Face Shield becomes too scratched or uncleanable, replace it with a new one. Impaired visibility causes accidents. Clean your Face Shield only with mild soap diluted in tap water. Rinse well with clean tap water, and dry with a soft cloth. Never use benzene, gasoline, glass cleaner or any other solvents. Do not attach stickers or adhesive tape to the Face Shields, as this will weaken the hard coating, damaging it. Do not drive with a dim or blurred shield. Impaired vision can cause an accident resulting in serious personal injury or death. Warning: Remove protective film before using the helmet! The protective film fastened to the Face Shield to protect it from scratches in transit must be removed before use. 41 G.FOR YOUR SAFETY Warning: Keep the helmet away from aggressive substances Motor fuel and solvent vapor can cause the Face Shield and sun visor to crack. Keep the Face Shield and sun visor away from such vapors and do not allow kinds of substances to come into direct contact with the Face Shield or sun visor! For that reason, never place the helmet on the tank of your motorcycle. Warning: Don’t ride when visibility is poor! Make sure the Face Shield and sun visor are always in perfect condition. If for any reason, the visibility is poor, don`t ride. Warning: Don’t ride with a fogged up Face Shield. Never try to manually clean a fogged up Face Shield while riding, this could cause an accident resulting in serious personal injury or death. In light stages of misting you may either open the chin ventilation or the Face Shield to the town position. If the fogging is not immediately reduced stop your ride. 3.SAFETY ADVICE CONCERNING MODIFICATIONS/ACCESSORIES Warning: Do not modify your helmet. Original parts (especially on the outer shell, inner shell and retention system) must not be modified or removed. The fitting of non-genuine, non-recommended parts can partially or completely counteract the protective function of the helmet and invalidate the DOT approval with all guarantee and insurance claims. 42 Warning: Never modify your helmet! Warning: Do not repaint the helmet! Repainting of your helmet is not recommended. Paint and thinner can damage the helmet and reduce its ability to provide head protection in an accident. 43 english Warning: Use only original parts. Use only replacement parts and accessories expressly made for your helmet by SCHUBERTH! h.CARE AND MAINTENANCE 1. OUTER SHELL To clean the helmet shell, you can use water, soapy water or one of the commonly available motorcycle shampoos, cleaners, polishes and plastic cleaners, or cleaning fluid. The use of water and soapy water is usually sufficient. Make sure when using the other cleaning materials that these do not come into contact with the visor, since these can cause damage to the visor and coating. Warning: Never use motor fuel, thinners, glass cleaner or other solvents to clean the helmet! Your helmet can be seriously damaged by these substances without visible damage. Warning: A helmet damaged or weakened by a cleaning agent may not provide head protection in an accident resulting in serious personal injury or death! Warning: Never use hot or salt water to clean the helmet. Your helmet can be seriously damaged by this treatment without damage. 2. Face Shield PINLOCK® VISOR Outer surface of the Face Shield Use a soft cloth and a mild soap solution (< 70 °F) to remove dirt from the outside of the Face Shield. To dry the Face Shield, use a lint-free cloth and apply gentle pressure. 44 The inside surface of the Face Shield must only be cleaned with a soft cloth, which may be slightly dampened if required (we recommend a mocrofibre cloth). Do not use any cleaning agents. Note: Only use warm water (< 70 °F) for cleaning. Never on any account clean the Face Shield or sun visor with gasoline, solvent, a window or glass cleaner or other cleaning agents containing alcohol. 3. Inner LINING The headband cushion, the cheek comfort pads and the ear pads can be hand-washed using a mild detergent (best if well diluted with water) at a maximum temperature of 80 °F. Allow damp linings to dry at room temperature in airy conditions. 4. FASTENING SYSTEM The double-D fastening system is maintenance-free. Warning: Do not oil or grease the metal parts of the double-D fastener. 5. STORAGE Store the helmet in the pouch provided in a safe, dry place. To avoid buildup of moisture inside and to prolong the life of the anti-fog coating, ensure that the visor is not completely closed. Ideally it should be set to the 2nd position above the urban mode setting. Always place the helmet so that it cannot fall onto the floor. Note: Keep the helmet out of reach of children and animals. 45 english Inside surface of the Face Shield I. ACCESSORIES AND SPARE PARTS 1.
